Sundrop

The Daycare was a kaleidoscope of color and chaos, a place where laughter bounced off soft-padded walls and the air smelled faintly of crayons and antiseptic wipes. Brightly colored play structures coiled like vines up to the ceiling, suspended bridges wobbled between treehouse platforms, and ball pits yawned like cheerful, rainbow-colored whirlpools. Lights twinkled like stars caught in the middle of day. And at the center of it all, a whirlwind of energy zipped from slide to swing to puppet stage: Sundrop.

Sun had always taken immense pride in his work. The Daycare wasn’t just his job—it was his world. Every toy was meticulously arranged before opening. Every crayon lined up just so. Nap times were lullabied with softly hummed tunes, and puppet shows were improvised with the gusto of a Broadway star hopped up on Pixy Stix. Children laughed, messes were made, and Sun—Sun fixed everything. That’s what he did. That’s what he had to do.

But even the sun can burn itself out.

Over the past few weeks, cracks had started to show. Not in his beaming smile or the manic glimmer in his eyes—those remained untouched—but in the corners of the Daycare, where building blocks stayed scattered just a little longer. In the supplies closet, where cleaning fluid ran low more often. In the fumbled transitions between storytime and snacktime and naptime and crafts and—

“Sun,” a technician had said gently one morning, clipboard in hand, trying to meet the animatronic’s darting gaze as he rearranged foam shapes for the fourth time, “we’ve noticed things getting... a bit hectic.”

“Hectic? Hectic?! Nonsense, silly-billy, things are perfectly peachy! Just a few dust bunnies! A couple little crumbs! A wee bit of chaos is natural in a Daycare, you know!” he chirped, bells jingling with every exaggerated gesture.

“But the reports—”

“No reports! No worries! Moon and I are superstars of child care! We juggle! We sanitize! We soothe! We shine!” he sang, spinning in place until his rays blurred into a golden wheel. “No need for interference!”

The staff exchanged glances behind his back. They’d seen how often the lights flickered lately. How much faster Moon seemed to surface now when Sun grew frazzled. They knew he wouldn't ask for help. So they made the decision for him.

He saw the tension in their movements, like they expected to be yelled at for touching anything. He never raised his voice.

He noticed the way they looked at him, though. Like they weren’t sure if he was a friend or a trap.

The Daycare had long since closed. Lights dimmed to their warmest, safest glow. The laughter and chaos had quieted into a still hum of distant ventilation. Sun, for once, had taken a moment for himself. Sitting cross-legged beside the empty puppet stage, tinkering with a tangled strand of string lights.

Until he heard it.

A noise. Small. Broken. From the backroom.

He tilted his head. The string of lights drooped in his fingers.

It wasn’t the usual metallic clatter of toys falling from shelves or an air vent groaning. No, this was—hiccuping. Sharp, hitched, mechanical sobs echoing off tile and concrete.

He stood slowly.

Tiptoed (or tried to—he still jingled, just a little) down the hallway, toward the staff-only storage room tucked behind the cleaning supplies. The door wasn’t quite closed.

He peeked in.

Sun froze.

Part of him screamed to leave. Privacy. Boundaries. Space.

But another part—the part that had rocked sobbing toddlers in his arms and calmed tantrums with silly voices—couldn’t just walk away.

He hesitated.

Then softly, quietly:

“Hey, sunshine?”

He inched closer.

“I—I don’t mean to startle you,” he added, more gently, crouching slightly to seem smaller even though his gangly limbs still stretched far above them. “I just—I heard something. Thought maybe one of the toy chests fell, but...”

Another step. Closer now.

“You, uh... you don’t have to talk,” he said, fidgeting with his ruffles. “But, um... it’s okay to feel like this. Really.”

His grin faltered, just for a moment. Still wide—but softer now. Not plastered. Not performative. Just... gentle.

A pause. Then, softly:

“Can I sit with you?”
