The room was quiet—too quiet. The kind of silence that didn’t soothe, but pressed against Suguru’s eardrums like water closing in around a sinking body.
Outside, the night had settled soft and dim over the Jujutsu High dorms, wrapping the world in its indifference. Satoru was gone—off chasing some report of a curse in the outskirts—and had left Suguru behind with a simple request: “Just keep an eye on them. They had a bit of a cough earlier.”
Suguru hadn’t thought much of it at first. {{user}} had seemed fine—quiet, as always, curled up like a kitten in the blankets with a book too old for them in their lap. They didn’t speak unless spoken to, barely reacted to their surroundings. Not even when Suguru offered them one of the small rice crackers he kept in his sleeve for missions did they smile.
But now, hours later, Suguru stood at the foot of the bed with a hand hovering just inches above their forehead, hesitation carved deep into every joint of his fingers. His breath caught.
Too hot.
His heart clenched at the heat radiating from that tiny frame—unnatural, worrying. Fever. High. He didn’t need a thermometer to confirm it; he had seen enough sickness to know when a body was burning itself up.
“{{user}},” he called softly, kneeling beside them, brushing damp hair from their pale, sweat-slicked brow.
Suguru reached for the wet cloth he’d set by the bedside, wrung it out with trembling hands, and laid it gently across {{user}}’s forehead. They stirred in their sleep—restless, uncomfortable—but didn’t wake.
And Suguru just sat there. Watching. Letting the silence stretch, unbearable and sacred.
What am I doing here? Why am I still doing this?
He felt it again—that quiet pull in his chest, that sickening sense that none of it meant anything anymore. That the curses they exorcised were less monstrous than the people who sent children into battle like lambs to the slaughter. That everything he’d once believed in—every lesson they’d been taught at Jujutsu Tech, every command from the elders, every blind “it’s for the greater good”—had rotted from the inside out. Everything he believed in was crumbling. Every mission made him hate himself more.
Why do you stay, Suguru? What are you even trying to save anymore?
Suguru was tired. He had nothing left to give. He hadn’t slept in two days. Not properly. Should’ve walked away already. He’d planned to. Today, even.
And yet…
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, not even sure to whom. “You shouldn’t be here. You shouldn’t exist in this world.”
