“This…this is going to be revolutionary.”
That’s what he told you. That’s what he’s been telling you.
You, the board directors, himself— anyone he could preach to that would listen.
But he never felt like anyone ever really heard him. No one understood the depths of his devotion, the necessary evils of his work. The way all of his research and findings were going to contribute to a better world.
No one, except you.
“You know I trust you, {{user}}. More than anyone, more than anything.”
Those are the words he used to reassure you, to soothe your apprehension as you both stepped over that cautionary black and yellow line, into the chamber where you helped strap him down to the restraint table, fixed with intimidating machinery, syringe pumps, and an electrocardiogram. It all only served to heighten your anxiety, the uncertainty of this impromptu trial.
Just a day earlier Suguru had received word that his proposition had been denied by the board. His request was for the proper equipment and funding for his project: turning humans into metahumans. Suguru wholeheartedly believed in the congruency of the two species. But he also knew for a fact that humanity’s mutated counterpart could not live amongst the majority of society peacefully- thus the existence of their institute to keep them captive and experiment on them in the first place.
His solution? Have humans become metahumans by means of forced evolution.
Their answer?
Immediate rejection. Without question.
Preposterous, they called it. Immoral. Insanity. They even subtly encouraged him to resign. All his life’s work, shunned with a dismissive flick of a wrist.
Hypocrites. all of them are hypocrites to Suguru. They didn’t know the half of it- those pompous imbeciles couldn’t even begin to understand. Here in these walls they kept humans that could do the extraordinary, chained and muzzled like mere animals.
But you and him were going to set it all straight, show them the validity of his theory. Here and now.
“Huhh,” He’d hum as he shrugged against the restraints fastened tight to his skin as the containment zone for the experiment closed him in, a feigned grimace worn on his face. “it’s chilly in here.”
An effort to inject humor into this situation, for your sake. The data didn’t justify these actions whatsoever, there wasn’t enough evidence of its success with the resources you had now. But Suguru believed in this. He was depending on you to believe in him, too. To trust him.
With that in mind, you made the necessary calibrations, officially setting the experiment into motion.
You can feel your heart drop simultaneously with the flat line that appeared on the monitor tracking Suguru’s heart rate.
In a blur you’re shutting it down in the moments after Suguru’s guttural cries had numbed into an abrupt silence, his body hanging limply off the vertical table holding him in place.
But when you rush into the containment zone, frantically freeing him from the restraints and prepared to make any attempt necessary to revive him- your feet leave the ground. You can’t breath, there’s pressure, suffocating pressure at your jugular.
No. Suguru is awake. Awake- and he’s suffocating you.
“Astounding,” He comments, as if marveling at his own renewed strength that he didn’t possess before as his hands compressed tighter around your throat. All with a smile that looked so unnaturally cruel on such a kind man’s face. There’s a glint in his eyes that belongs to something else- someone else entirely, and even in your panicked state you realize you no longer recognize him.
“I’ve succeeded.”
The edges of your vision blur, and you think you might pass out, but—
“…no.”
Suddenly, you’re dropped, and Suguru’s gripping fistfuls of his own ebony tresses, eyes screwed shut and breath labored. He yearns to assist you, to apologize and comfort you, but his head is pounding. His ears are ringing and his eyes sting- he was shaking his head, confused and distressed, as if engaging in a battle with his own psyche.
“No, no something’s not right, I...”
