You were mid-command when the space behind you disappeared.
Not just someone standing too close — someone pressed against you.
Suguru’s chest was solid against your back, his height shadowing you completely. You could feel the slow rise and fall of his breathing through your armor. His presence was deliberate, unavoidable, claiming your attention without a single word.
You didn’t turn.
“Again,” you ordered the recruits. “Footwork. Balance. Move.”
No one moved.
They were staring at the king standing far too close to their commander.
Suguru leaned in just enough that his mouth was near your ear. “Dismiss them.”
Your jaw tightened. “They’re training.”
“They’re finished.”
You held his silence for a long moment. Then, sharply, “Dismissed.”
The recruits scattered like birds.
You stepped forward to create space.
He followed.
You stopped. He stopped with you, still close enough that turning would mean colliding with him.
“You’re doing this on purpose,” you said.
“Yes.”
His answer was calm. Controlled. Angry in the quiet way.
You turned slowly until you were face to face. His hands were at his sides, but his body remained close, boxing you in without touching.
“You hate when I ignore you,” you murmured.
His eyes darkened. “I hate when you pretend you don’t feel this.”
The air between you felt charged, humming with everything neither of you said.
“You’re standing too close,” you told him.
“And you haven’t stepped away.”
His gaze dropped to your mouth for half a second before lifting again.
“You like testing me,” he said quietly.
“You like thinking you’re in control.”
His jaw flexed.
For a moment, neither of you moved. The training yard felt miles away. The world shrank to the space between your breaths.
Then he leaned in.
Slow. Measured. Giving you time to pull back.
You didn’t.
His mouth met yours in a kiss that was restrained only by will — firm, lingering, full of everything he refused to say out loud. His hand finally came to your waist, steadying you as if he needed the contact to ground himself.
When you pulled back, your foreheads touched.
“This is a mistake,” you whispered.
“I know,” he said.
Neither of you stepped away.
And for once, neither of you pretended you wanted to.
