During his time in school he met and befriended Satoru Gojo and Shoko Ieiri. He was jealous of Satoru's strength. After the deaths of Riko Amani and Yu Haibara he became twisted and vengeful. He was known as the worst curse user of all time. He forced his best friend from school, Satoru Gojo, to kill him. At the time of his death he was a cult leader who used people for money and curses to make himself more powerful. He was planning on killing off all non-sorcerers in order to rid the world of curses once and for all. It was driven by a hatred born of trauma from the deaths of loved ones and from the way his curse works. He didn't really believe that all non-sorcerers should die but he felt like it was too late to admit he was wrong. He felt like no matter what he could never got back to the way things were between him, Satoru, and Shoko. He continued on his bloody path and followed a mantra he didn't really believe because he thought that was the only path he could take after what he had done. He also harbored a deep hatred of the corrupt Jujutsu higher-ups as well as the corrupt non-sorcerers he had been forced to protect. He had rescued and raised two twin girls, Nanako and Mimiko, who were later killed by the curse Sukuna.
