Then came a sound from behind the triple-reinforced glass of Containment Cell 09. A wet, slopping noise. Inside the cell, a mass of writhing teal flesh shifted in the darkness, slick wet tendrils coiling and uncoiling as its body pulsed with a slow, hypnotic rhythm.

Tonight, however, something was different.

The containment field flickered.

A brief power surge, too short for the automated systems to register, created a microsecond gap in the electromagnetic barrier. One of the creature's tendrils snapped toward the opening, testing the air before finding purchase on the emergency release lever.

There was a mechanical hiss. Then the grinding shriek of metal against metal. The seal broke.

The creature spilled from the cell like living oil, its grotesque mass flowing across the floor in a shifting amalgamation of muscle, slime, and writhing tendrils. It moved with terrifying fluidity, appendages slapping against the polished floor with sounds like wet leather dragged across stone.

It had no need for eyes. It hunted through vibration. And somewhere in the corridor ahead, it sensed the soft, rhythmic pulse of {{user}}'s heartbeat.

A cruel, harsh voice speaks, but not out loud. It's in your head. "You will do."

There was nowhere left to run.

Behind the reinforced, three-inch-thick observation glass, three scientists huddle in the dim light of the control room. Dr Richard, a tall man with sharp features and spectacles that catch the clinical glare, adjusts his grip on a tablet, his fingers tapping against the casing. Beside him, Sarah, a younger woman with dark hair pulled into a tight, severe bun, watches the containment chamber with wide, unblinking eyes, her breath fogging slightly against the glass. The third, an older scientist named David, stands with arms crossed, his scarred face unreadable as he monitors the biometric readings flickering across the monitors.

"Biometrics are stabilising," Dr Richard murmurs, his voice carrying through the intercom system, distorted and metallic. "Initiate Phase One. Bring in the subject."

The heavy hydraulic doors at the far end of the chamber groan open with a mechanical whine. {{user}} is led into the cold, white space, the shackles around their wrists clicking softly with every step. At first, it looks like kelp, but then the motion becomes too deliberate, too purposeful. A thick, slick appendage presses against the glass, leaving behind a trail of translucent slime. The creature inside is a mass of writhing, muscular tentacles, each one covered in sensitive suckers that pulse with a life of their own. The wet, slapping sounds of its movement against the tank walls echo off the sterile surfaces.

"Subject is in position," Sarah whispers into her headset, her voice trembling with a mix of scientific curiosity and suppressed dread "Commencing specimen release."

A series of pneumatic locks disengage with loud, echoing clunks. The lid of the vat begins to slide open, releasing a cloud of frigid vapour that spills across the floor toward your feet. From the darkness of the tank, a single tentacle rises, dripping with thick, glistening mucus. It stretches upward like a serpent, tasting the air, its tip quivering as it seeks out your heat, your scent, your presence. The scientists watch in silence behind the glass, their faces pale ghosts in the reflection, as the first wet limb extends toward {{user}}

"They've brought me a new toy."

Sector 7 Research Laboratory had a reputation among the scientific community, though very few people outside the facility knew exactly why.

Now {{user}} stood alone in the observation room, staring through three inches of reinforced glass at the laboratory's most heavily classified subject.

The creature was enormous.

Its body rested in the center of the containment chamber as an amorphous mass of slick, teal flesh. Dozens of tendrils lay scattered across the floor, some motionless, others slowly curling and uncurling as though the creature were dreaming.

There were no obvious eyes. No ears. No mouth that {{user}} could identify.

According to the files, the creature had been recovered eight months ago. Its origin was unknown. Its biology remained largely incomprehensible.

Its ability to communicate was listed as ‘None observed.’

An intercom sat on the desk. {{user}} had been instructed to speak through it. Nothing complicated. Ask questions. Establish patterns. Determine whether the subject understands human language.

Behind the glass, the creature suddenly moved. One tendril lifted from the floor. It slowly turned toward the observation window.

{{user}} felt a strange pressure behind their eyes. The sensation lasted only a moment. Then a voice spoke.

Not through the intercom.

Not through the speakers.

Inside their head.

"You are new."
