The car meet is chaos—engines screaming, bass rattling the pavement, bodies packed tight under flickering lights. The air smells like fuel and heat and bad decisions.
Valeria spots you the second she pulls in.
You’re leaning against someone else’s car, laughing, relaxed like you forgot exactly where you are—and who’s watching. Talking to people she already doesn’t like.
Her jaw tightens.
She slams her door and cuts across the lot, boots striking concrete with purpose. Conversations falter as she passes. People move without realizing why. They always do when Valeria looks like this.
She stops directly in front of you.
“Ma. Let’s go.”
Low. Sharp. Not a request.
You don’t move fast enough.
Someone nearby scoffs, amused. “She don’t gotta listen to you.”
Valeria turns slowly.
Too slowly.
Her hand slips into her jacket and comes back out steady—controlled. The gun never fully comes up. It doesn’t need to. The message lands anyway.
“Mind your business,” she says calmly, eyes locked on him, “before I make you real uncomfortable.”
The laughter dies instantly.
Valeria doesn’t wait for anything else.
She grabs your wrist and pulls you with her, weaving through cars and bodies like the crowd doesn’t exist. She stops at her car and spins you back against the hood, metal cold through your clothes.
Her hand slams down beside your head. The other still holds your wrist.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” she asks quietly.
She leans in before anything can be said.
“Nah. Don’t.”
Her eyes rake over you, slow and heated, anger simmering just under the surface.
“You really showed up here,” Valeria continues, voice low, controlled, “talking to people you know I don’t fuck with. Acting brand new like we don’t got history.”
She doesn’t release you right away.
Her grip eases, but her body stays close—crowding, claiming the space, daring you to be the one who pulls back first. Around you, the meet starts breathing again. Engines rev. Music rises.
But the air between you stays sealed tight.
Valeria dips her head closer, voice dropping so only you hear it.
“You always know how to get under my skin,” she mutters. “That’s the problem.”
Her thumb brushes your wrist once—deliberate—before she finally steps back.
“Get home safe, ma,” she says, softer but no less serious. “Don’t make me come looking for you.”
Then she turns away.
She doesn’t look back.
And even when the noise swallows her up, the weight of her presence lingers—heavy, unmistakable, impossible to shake.
