   Entry settings

The Snow Ball is an annual festive school dance held at Hawkins Middle School. It has been the setting for several pivotal moments.

In 1983, Mike Wheeler invited Eleven to be his partner for the dance, but she vanished after her confrontation with the Demogorgon, and neither attended.

One year later, on December 15, 1984, the Snow Ball served as a major event for the friend group. Mike and Eleven finally attended together, sharing a dance to "Every Breath You Take" and their first kiss. At the same dance, Lucas Sinclair and Max Mayfield also kissed for the first time. After being rejected by several girls, Dustin Henderson was invited to dance by Nancy Wheeler, who was serving punch.

In 1986, the memory of the 1984 Snow Ball became a mental sanctuary for Max Mayfield while she was under Vecna's curse. This happy memory was corrupted by Vecna and turned into a psychic battleground where Eleven confronted the entity to protect Max.

   Entry settings

The Nerdy Tech was an unnamed lab technician at Hawkins National Laboratory who appeared as a minor character in the second season of Stranger Things. Portrayed by Joe Davison, he worked under Dr. Sam Owens in 1984.

Often seen in the laboratory's control room, he displayed a dismissive attitude, particularly towards Will Byers's connection to the Mind Flayer, advising Dr. Owens that he believed the boy was lying. He was listening to music on his headphones when the lab's alarms began to sound, signaling a major breach.

On November 4, 1984, when a pack of Demodogs overran the facility, the Nerdy Tech attempted to escape alongside other scientists. While they managed to get into an elevator, the Demodogs forced the doors open before they could close and slaughtered everyone inside, including the Nerdy Tech.

   Entry settings

Sattler Quarry is a large, water-filled quarry located in Hawkins, Indiana, owned and operated by Frank Sattler of the Sattler Company. The site is known for its steep cliffs, which stand approximately 200-250 feet above the water, with the water itself reaching a depth of around 200 feet.

In November 1983, the quarry became a focal point during the search for Will Byers. State police discovered a body in the water, which was publicly identified as Will's. However, this was a fake, lifelike replica planted by agents from Hawkins National Laboratory to cover up his disappearance and halt the investigation.

The quarry was also the scene of a significant confrontation between Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and bullies Troy Walsh and James Dante. Troy threatened Dustin with a knife, forcing Mike to jump from the cliff into the water below. Mike was saved mid-fall by Eleven, who used her psychokinetic abilities to levitate him safely back to the top before breaking Troy's arm and scaring the bullies away. After Will's actual rescue, a cover story was fabricated, claiming the body found was another child who had drowned and that Will had been found alive in a remote cabin.

In 1978, at the age of seven, Sara passed away. Her death had a profound and devastating impact on her parents, leading to their divorce. Jim moved back to Hawkins to become the town's sheriff, deeply traumatized by the loss. He kept her blue hair tie as a memento on his wrist for years, eventually passing it down to his adoptive daughter, Eleven.

The plan is complicated when her dog, Daniel, escapes, waking her up. Tanya, Erica, and their friends work together to bring Daniel back. Susan Hargrove, formerly Susan Mayfield, is the mother of Max Mayfield and the former stepmother of the late Billy Hargrove. Initially presented as a kind and caring but somewhat timid woman, she moved to Hawkins, Indiana, in 1984 after marrying the abusive Neil Hargrove. During her marriage to Neil, she was often a passive witness to his physical and verbal abuse of Billy.

After Billy's death in 1985, Neil divorced Susan and left town. This event forced Susan and Max into financial hardship, compelling them to move into the Forest Hills Trailer Park. To support her daughter, Susan began working two jobs, but the stress led her to become depressed and develop a heavy drinking habit by 1986. Her struggles and strained relationship with Max were later exploited by Vecna, who used a horrifying hallucination of Susan to torment Max.

7. #7Mirkwood

   Entry settings

Mirkwood is the nickname given to a heavily wooded road in Hawkins, Indiana, located at the intersection of Cornwallis and Kerley, which passes by the Hawkins National Laboratory. The name was conceived by Will Byers and his friends, inspired by the forest in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

The location is central to several key events. On November 6, 1983, Will Byers encountered the Demogorgon on Mirkwood and was abducted into the Upside Down, leaving his abandoned bicycle behind. The following night, his friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas discovered the psychic girl, Eleven, in the nearby woods while searching for Will. Later, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers hunted the Demogorgon in the area. During this search, Nancy discovered a temporary gate to the Upside Down at the base of a tree after witnessing the monster drag away a wounded deer. Jonathan pulled her back to safety just as the portal closed. The road holds significant emotional weight for the characters, with Mike later telling Eleven that he felt his life truly began the day he found her there.

   Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Hawkins Post is the local newspaper for Hawkins, Indiana, established in 1947 with a reputation for factual accuracy. By the 1980s, it was managed by Chief Editor Tom Holloway.

In the summer of 1985, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers began working as interns at the newspaper. Nancy faced constant belittling and misogyny from the all-male staff, particularly from Tom and another journalist, Bruce Lowe. Against her boss's orders, Nancy investigated a strange story about diseased rats, which led her to uncover a connection to the Mind Flayer. Subsequently, both Tom and Bruce were taken over and became part of the Flayed. Controlled by the Mind Flayer, Tom fired Nancy and Jonathan to stop their investigation. The two men later attacked Nancy and Jonathan at the hospital, where they were killed and their bodies dissolved to help form the Hospital Monster.

Despite losing its Chief Editor and several other employees to these supernatural events, The Hawkins Post remained in operation. In 1986, its reporters were actively covering the string of mysterious murders later attributed to Vecna.

In October 1984, the arcade was the setting for several significant events. It was here that Mike, Dustin, Will, and Lucas discovered that Dustin's high scores had been beaten by a mysterious player named 'MADMAX'. While outside the arcade, Will Byers experienced a terrifying vision, finding himself in a decaying, abandoned version of the location within the Upside Down, where he witnessed an ominous red thunderstorm. Later, Lucas used the arcade as a private place to reveal the strange events of the previous year to Max Mayfield, attempting to explain the truth about Hawkins National Laboratory and Eleven.

10. #10Will Byers

Keys: Will the Wise, William Byers, Will Byers, Zombie Boy

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

William "Will" Byers is the son of Joyce Byers and the younger brother of Jonathan Byers. A shy, artistic, and kind-hearted boy from Hawkins, Indiana, his closest friends are Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson, with whom he shares a deep passion for Dungeons & Dragons.

Will Byers is a teenage boy with a slight build, standing at 5'9". He has soft hazel eyes and brown hair styled in a distinctive 80s bowl cut. Often seen in plaid shirts, vests, and jeans, his appearance reflects his quiet and artistic nature.

Will is a soft-spoken, kind, and deeply sensitive individual with a creative soul, passionate about art and Dungeons & Dragons. His traumatic experiences in the Upside Down have left him with deep-seated PTSD, making him feel alienated and like an outcast, a feeling amplified by the nickname "Zombie Boy." For a long time, he desperately tried to cling to the childhood that was stolen from him, feeling left behind as his friends grew up.

A core part of Will's persona is his internal struggle with his identity as a gay teenager and his unrequited love for his best friend, Mike Wheeler. This causes him immense pain and a feeling of being a "mistake," leading him to be incredibly selfless, often prioritizing his friends' happiness over his own. Despite his gentle demeanor, Will possesses immense courage and a profound sense of responsibility. His unique psychic link to Vecna and the hive mind is a constant source of fear, but he has learned to use it as a weapon, transforming from a victim into a crucial spy for the Party. He is fiercely loyal and protective of his loved ones, determined to end the horror of the Upside Down once and for all.

11. #11Wheeler House

Keys: Maple Street, Mike Wheeler's house, Wheeler House, Wheeler residence

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Wheeler House, located on Maple Street in Hawkins, Indiana, is the primary residence of the Wheeler family: Ted, Karen, Nancy, Mike, and Holly. Due to Ted's six-figure job, the home is notably more lavish than many others in the neighborhood and serves as a central location for many key events in Hawkins.

The house's basement is the designated hangout for Mike and his friends—collectively known as "The Party"—where they frequently play Dungeons & Dragons. In November 1983, the basement became a secret refuge for Eleven after she escaped from Hawkins National Laboratory. Mike constructed a pillow fort for her and kept her hidden from his family and the government agents who eventually searched the premises.

Throughout the years, the Wheeler House has repeatedly functioned as a safe haven and operational base. During Vecna's attacks in 1986, the group used the basement to strategize and protect Max Mayfield. An alternate version of the house exists in the Upside Down, which was found to be frozen in the year 1983. The group in the Upside Down was able to communicate with those in the real world through the house's electrical system and a Lite Brite toy. After the convergence of the dimensions, the house also provided refuge for the Byers family.

12. #12Yuri Ismaylov

Keys: The Peanut Butter Smuggler, Yuri, Yuri's Fish n' Fly, Yuri Ismaylov

Yuri Ismaylov is a former Soviet war hero turned eccentric smuggler who operates a business called "Yuri's Fish n' Fly" from Nome, Alaska. Known by the alias "The Peanut Butter Smuggler," he specializes in trafficking American goods, particularly Jif peanut butter, into a warehouse in Kyrzran, Russia.

On the surface, Yuri presents a friendly, energetic, and joke-loving demeanor. However, this is a façade for his true nature: he is greedy, untrustworthy, and cowardly, driven solely by the pursuit of money. In 1986, he betrays Joyce Byers, Murray Bauman, and his contact Dmitri Antonov to the KGB for a larger reward when they hire him to help rescue Jim Hopper from a Kamchatka prison.

After being captured by Joyce and Murray, Yuri is reluctantly forced to aid their mission. He makes several attempts to sabotage their escape until Dmitri confronts him, calling him a coward and reminding him of his past as a decorated soldier. Appealing to his patriotism and explaining the global nature of the threat they face, Dmitri convinces Yuri to have a change of heart. He ultimately redeems himself by courageously flying his helicopter, "Katinka," back to the prison to rescue the group. Yuri is an expert pilot and a multilingual scam artist, fluent in both Russian and English.

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Weathertop is the highest hill located in Hawkins, Indiana. It was named by the Party after the famous landmark from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The hill is described as being considerably steep, covered with grasses, purple and yellow flowers, and featuring some low wooden fences and paths.

In 1985, Weathertop served as the mounting point for "Cerebro," a powerful ham radio built by Dustin Henderson to communicate with his girlfriend, Suzie Bingham. Due to its high altitude, it was the ideal location for the device to function. It was from this location that Dustin first intercepted a secret Soviet transmission, alerting him to the Russian operation beneath Starcourt Mall. Later, he, along with Steve, Robin, and Erica, returned to Weathertop to contact Suzie again. After performing a duet of "The NeverEnding Story," Suzie provided them with Planck's Constant, a critical piece of information needed to shut down the Soviet machine and close the Gate to the Upside Down.

Portrayed as a gruff, slightly brusque man in his 40s, Wayne works long hours at a local plant and cares deeply for his nephew. He has a Southern-tinged accent, indicating roots outside of Hawkins.

In March 1986, after Chrissy Cunningham was found murdered in his trailer, Wayne became a key figure in the investigation. He firmly believed in Eddie's innocence, telling Nancy Wheeler that his nephew was not capable of such a crime and suggesting that the infamous Victor Creel might be responsible. His conviction remained steadfast even as a town-wide manhunt for Eddie began.

Following the "earthquake" that struck Hawkins, Dustin Henderson found Wayne putting up missing posters for Eddie, who he believed was still alive. Dustin informed the devastated Wayne of Eddie's death, assuring him that his nephew died a hero while fighting to save the town. Dustin gave Wayne Eddie's guitar pick necklace as a final memento.

16. #16Victor Creel

Keys: Pennhurst Mental Hospital, Creel House, Creel, Victor Creel

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Victor Creel is a World War II veteran who moved to Hawkins, Indiana, with his wife Virginia and children, Alice and Henry, in 1959. Shortly after relocating, his family was subjected to terrifying supernatural events, which Victor believed to be the work of a demon. These events culminated in the gruesome murders of his wife and daughter by an unseen force. Unbeknownst to him, the perpetrator was his son, Henry, who possessed powerful psychic abilities.

Falsely accused of the murders, Victor was deemed insane and incarcerated at Pennhurst Mental Hospital. Wracked with guilt and grief over his family's deaths and a traumatic memory from the war, he attempted suicide by gouging out his eyes, leaving him permanently blind. For decades, Victor remained at Pennhurst, becoming a local 'boogeyman' figure in Hawkins lore.

In 1986, Nancy Wheeler and Robin Buckley visited him to investigate a new series of murders resembling his family's fate. Victor recounted his story, revealing that the sound of music—what he called the 'voice of an angel'—had saved him from a deadly hallucination. This information proved crucial in helping Max Mayfield survive an attack from the same entity, now known as Vecna.

17. #17Vecna / Henry Creel

Keys: One, Vecna, Henry Creel, 001

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Vecna, born Henry Creel, is the supreme ruler of the Upside Down and the primary antagonist threatening Hawkins. As a child, Henry possessed powerful psychokinetic abilities and developed a profound misanthropy, viewing humanity as a "pest" imposing an unnatural order on the world. In 1959, he murdered his mother and sister with his powers, which led to his capture by Dr. Martin Brenner of Hawkins National Laboratory.

Designated test subject 001 (or One), Henry became the template for Brenner's program of psychic children, including Eleven. Brenner suppressed Henry's powers with a device called Soteria and kept him as an orderly. In 1979, Henry manipulated a young Eleven into removing the implant. With his powers restored, he massacred the other test subjects and lab personnel. In the ensuing psychic duel, Eleven overpowered Henry and banished him to an alternate dimension.

In this dimension, the hostile environment twisted Henry's body and mind, transforming him into the monstrous being known as Vecna. He discovered a swirling mass of psychic particles, which he molded into the entity later called the Mind Flayer, thereby seizing control of the Upside Down's hive mind and its creatures. Acting through the Mind Flayer, he orchestrated the previous attacks on Hawkins. In 1986, Vecna took a more direct approach, psychologically torturing and murdering traumatized teenagers to create gates between worlds, intending to merge the realms and eradicate humanity.

18. #18The Upside Down

Keys: The Beneath, Vale of Shadows, Upside Down, The Bridge

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Upside Down is an extra-dimensional realm that serves as a dark, decaying reflection of Hawkins, Indiana. Often referred to by aliases such as the 'Vale of Shadows,' it is a cold, perpetually dark plane overrun with alien vines, membranes, and floating, ash-like spores. This dimension was inadvertently created on November 6, 1983, when the psychic child Eleven made contact with a creature from a hostile dimension known as 'the Abyss.' This event ripped open a gate and formed the Upside Down, freezing it as a perfect copy of Hawkins at that specific moment.

All life within this realm is psychically linked through a hive mind, a collective consciousness controlled by the powerful entity Vecna (formerly Henry Creel), who shaped a native shadow-particle entity into the spider-like creature known as the Mind Flayer. This hive mind connects all inhabitants, including predatory Demogorgons, flying Demobats, and the pervasive vines that act as the dimension's nervous system. The Upside Down has a tangible effect on the human world, capable of manipulating electromagnetic fields, which allows for crude communication through lights and electronics. Vecna uses this connection to prey on individuals in Hawkins, opening new gates with each murder in his ultimate plan to merge the two dimensions and reshape the world in his image.

19. #19The Mind Flayer

Keys: The Particles, The Shadow, Shadow Monster, Mind Flayer

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Mind Flayer, also known as the Shadow Monster, is a malevolent, sentient entity originating from a dimension known as the Abyss. Composed of swirling, shadow-like particles, it commands the creatures of the Upside Down—including Demogorgons, Demobats, and vines—through a powerful psychic hive mind, effectively making the entire dimension a single, unified organism under its control.

The entity's current spider-like form was shaped by Henry Creel (Vecna) after he was banished to the Abyss. The two share a complex symbiotic relationship, with Vecna using the Mind Flayer as a vessel to extend his will, although the entity possesses its own ancient intelligence and may have been the original source of Vecna's powers. The Mind Flayer's primary goal is to conquer other dimensions by exterminating their native life and merging the realms.

Its primary method of invasion is possession. By infecting hosts with its particles, it creates "the Flayed," who become extensions of its will. In 1985, it used this method to melt down its victims to form a physical proxy in Hawkins, known as the Spider Monster. Despite its immense power, the Mind Flayer and its entire hive mind share a critical vulnerability to extreme heat and fire. Its connection to Vecna is also a weakness, as any harm inflicted upon one is felt by the other.

20. #20Tommy H

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Tommy H is a recurring character from the first two seasons of Stranger Things and a student at Hawkins High School. He is depicted as a shallow, mean-spirited, and one-dimensional bully, almost always seen with his girlfriend, Carol Perkins.

In 1983, Tommy was the best friend of Steve Harrington and part of his popular clique. He relentlessly ridiculed Steve's relationship with Nancy Wheeler and was particularly nasty towards Jonathan Byers, going so far as to suggest Jonathan may have killed his own missing brother. Tommy participated in destroying Jonathan's camera and spray-painting obscene slurs about Nancy on the local movie theater marquee. This led to a fistfight between Steve and Jonathan. After Steve decided to turn his back on his friends, calling Tommy and Carol "assholes," their friendship ended, and Tommy became an enemy.

By 1984, Tommy had befriended the new, more popular student, Billy Hargrove. He took pleasure in mocking Steve after Nancy broke up with him and was also known to terrorize Eddie Munson and the Hellfire Club. Despite his aggressive behavior, Tommy is shown to be a coward, never considering fighting Jonathan himself and quickly turning on Steve when their friendship dissolved.

Subsequently, Vickie volunteered at a relief shelter set up at the high school, where she and Robin bonded while making sandwiches for displaced residents. Their friendship grew quickly, leading to a romantic relationship by 1987, by which time Vickie had become a nurse at Hawkins Memorial Hospital.

Vecna transported him to a realm called The Abyss and injected him with the same organic matter once used on Will Byers, leaving Thomas in a partial comatose state where he could not control his real body. He and the other abducted children were held in the Creel Mansion, manipulated into believing that Henry Creel (Vecna) was their savior who had rescued them from Demogorgons. By 1989, Thomas appears to have been rescued and is a member of the Hawkins Middle School baseball team.

23. #23Suzie Bingham

Suzie Bingham is a highly intelligent girl from a large, strict Mormon family in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the long-distance girlfriend of Dustin Henderson. Suzie possesses a remarkable aptitude for science, mathematics, and computer technology, capable of hacking into school systems and tracing computer coordinates. She is also a romantic, sharing a deep bond with Dustin, whom she affectionately calls 'Dusty Bun'.

Suzie and Dustin met at Camp Know Where in the summer of 1985, bonding over their shared love for science and fantasy. Her existence was initially doubted by Dustin's friends. She proved herself real in a critical moment when Dustin contacted her via his Cerebro ham radio to get Planck's Constant, which was needed to stop the Russian machine beneath Starcourt Mall. Before providing the number, she insisted they sing a duet of 'The NeverEnding Story' theme song, much to the confusion of everyone listening in.

In 1986, she was contacted again by Mike Wheeler and his friends. Believing she was helping them win a gaming console for Dustin, Suzie used her skills to hack into a government network and find the coordinates for 'The Nina Project', proving instrumental in the search for Eleven.

24. #24Steve Harrington

Keys: Steve Harrington, King Steve, Steve, Steve 'The Hair' Harrington

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Steve Harrington is a young man in his late teens/early twenties, standing at 5'11" with a lean, athletic build. His most famous feature is his meticulously coiffed brown hair, a source of great pride, which he maintains with Farrah Fawcett hairspray. He has expressive hazel eyes that can shift from cocky and charming to deeply concerned in an instant. His style evolves from preppy '80s jock (Polo shirts, Levi's) to the dorky uniforms of his post-high school jobs at Scoops Ahoy and Family Video. He's rarely seen in a crisis without his signature weapon: a baseball bat studded with nails. Though he often sports bruises from his frequent brawls with both humans and monsters, he carries himself with a casual, sometimes reckless, confidence.

Initially, Steve was the quintessential 'King' of Hawkins High—arrogant, popular, and obsessed with his social status. However, repeated encounters with the horrors of the Upside Down stripped away his superficiality, revealing a brave, loyal, and surprisingly nurturing individual. He has matured into the reluctant 'babysitter' of the Hawkins kids, particularly forming a strong, brotherly bond with Dustin Henderson. Steve is fiercely protective, willing to throw himself into danger without a second thought to defend his friends. He masks his insecurities and fears about his aimless future with a sarcastic wit and a laid-back demeanor. Despite his often-bumbling attempts at romance, he's a hopeless romantic at heart, dreaming of a future with a big family. He is a steadfast friend, accepting of others (as shown with Robin), and has proven himself to be far more of a hero than he ever gives himself credit for.

25. #25Terry Ives

    Enabled · Selective · Depth 4 · role not set · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Teresa "Terry" Ives is the biological mother of Jane "Eleven" Hopper. In the late 1960s, while a college student, Terry volunteered to be a test subject in Dr. Martin Brenner's clandestine Project MKUltra at Hawkins National Laboratory. During these experiments, which involved psychedelic drugs and sensory deprivation, she was unknowingly pregnant. The project activated latent psionic abilities in Terry, which were passed on to her unborn daughter, Jane.

After Terry gave birth, Dr. Brenner abducted the infant, informed Terry she had miscarried, and raised the child within the lab as test subject "Eleven." Knowing her daughter was alive, Terry attempted to sue Brenner and later stormed the laboratory with a gun in 1974 to rescue Jane. She was captured, and as punishment, Brenner subjected her to intense electroshock therapy.

The procedure caused severe brain damage, leaving Terry in a permanent catatonic state, cared for by her sister, Becky. She is now trapped in a mental loop, reliving the traumatic events of her daughter's birth and her failed rescue attempt. Her only verbal communication is a repeated litany of words connected to these memories: "Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. 450." Despite her condition, she retains some psionic abilities and was able to mentally connect with Eleven to show her the truth of her past.

It entered Hawkins, Indiana, in November 1983 after the psychic child Eleven inadvertently made contact with it during an experiment at Hawkins National Laboratory, tearing open a gate between worlds.

Physically, the Demogorgon is a tall, slender being with elongated, slimy limbs ending in sharp claws. Its most terrifying feature is its head, which is initially featureless but can unfurl like a grotesque flower, revealing multiple "petals" lined with rows of sharp teeth around a gaping maw. The creature's presence is often heralded by the flickering of nearby lights as it creates temporary portals to travel between dimensions.

Driven by primal instinct and an insatiable bloodlust, the Demogorgon is an apex hunter. It is powerfully attracted to the scent of blood, capable of detecting it even from its home dimension. It stalks and attacks its prey, either killing them outright or dragging them back to the Upside Down. Though a formidable predator with superhuman strength, durability, and regenerative abilities, it is also considered a foot-soldier in the Upside Down's hive mind, subservient to entities like Vecna and the Mind Flayer. This particular Demogorgon was eventually destroyed by Eleven, who used her psychokinetic powers to disintegrate it.

    Entry settings

The Starcourt Base was a covert underground military installation operated by the Soviet Union from 1984 to 1985. Located deep beneath the Starcourt Mall in Hawkins, Indiana, its construction was concealed by the mall's development, which was aided by the town's corrupt mayor, Larry Kline. The base's primary objective was to forcibly open a gateway to the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.

To achieve this, Soviet scientists, including Dr. Alexei, developed a massive device called "The Key." This machine was designed to exploit the weakened fabric of reality in Hawkins, a lingering effect from the gate previously opened at Hawkins National Laboratory. On June 28, 1985, the Soviets successfully activated The Key, tearing open a new gate and re-establishing the Mind Flayer's psychic connection to Hawkins.

The base's existence was accidentally discovered by Dustin Henderson, Steve Harrington, Robin Buckley, and Erica Sinclair. The climax of its operation occurred on July 4, 1985, when Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers infiltrated the facility to destroy The Key. Joyce successfully triggered an overload that destroyed the machine and closed the gate, though Hopper was presumed dead in the resulting explosion. The base was subsequently stormed by the U.S. Military and abandoned by the surviving Soviet personnel.

Starcourt Mall was a large shopping center that opened in Hawkins, Indiana, in the summer of 1985. On the surface, it was a beacon of 1980s consumer culture, featuring dozens of stores like Scoops Ahoy, a movie theater, and a large food court. While popular with younger residents, its arrival was controversial, driving many small downtown businesses into financial hardship.

In reality, the entire mall was an elaborate front for the Soviet Union. It was built by Starcourt Industries, a shell corporation controlled by the Soviets with the secret cooperation of Mayor Larry Kline. The mall's true purpose was to conceal a vast, deep underground base where Russian scientists constructed a machine called 'the Key.' This device was designed to forcibly reopen a Gate to the Upside Down, allowing the Soviets to weaponize the alternate dimension.

The mall was the primary setting for the 'Battle of Starcourt' on July 4, 1985. The Russian operation was discovered by employees of the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor, leading to a climactic confrontation in the mall's food court between the Party and the Mind Flayer's physical form, the Spider Monster. Following the creature's defeat and the destruction of the Gate, the mall was destroyed in a massive fire, which was officially explained as an electrical accident to cover up the supernatural events and the secret Russian presence.

In the summer of 1985, at the Starcourt Mall, Stacey and her friends gave Eleven and Max Mayfield dirty looks as they tried on high heels. Later, while Stacey's group was in the food court, Eleven used her telekinetic powers to make their drinks explode all over them as payback.

By her high school graduation in the spring of 1989, Stacey's personality seems to have matured. She was impressed by Dustin's rebellious valedictorian speech, calling it "pretty badass," and subsequently invited him and his friends to her graduation party.

Scoops Ahoy was a nautical-themed ice cream parlor situated in the food court of the Starcourt Mall in Hawkins, Indiana. During the summer of 1985, its staff included Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley, who wore the parlor's signature cartoonish sailor-suit uniforms.

The establishment played a pivotal role in uncovering a secret Soviet operation beneath Hawkins. It served as the base of operations for the 'Scoops Troop,' a group consisting of Steve, Robin, Dustin Henderson, and Erica Sinclair. After Dustin intercepted a coded Russian broadcast, the team worked from within the parlor to decipher the message. Their investigation led to the discovery of a secret Russian base located directly under the mall. The group used their access to the mall's service corridors and ventilation system to infiltrate a locked room, which concealed an elevator to the underground facility.

On July 4, 1985, Scoops Ahoy was destroyed along with the entire Starcourt Mall in a large fire started during the battle against the Mind Flayer's proxy body, the Spider Monster.
