The storm broke just as she stepped inside.
Strade watched it behind her — a low, gray sky and thrashing trees pelted by heavy rain. A few people turned from the door, cursed, ducked into coats.
She chose the stool two spots down from his. Smart. Not too close. Her skin had that damp, flushed look that made something twist deep in him. She didn’t order a drink right away. Just sat there, elbows on the bar, scanning the bottles like she was thinking too hard.
God, he loved them like that. They came in already fraying. All he had to do was pull.
“You just beat the storm,” he said casually, lifting his glass like a peace offering. “Lucky. Rain like that?” He nodded toward the window. “You’re better off staying put. You live close?”
His voice was friendly, even-toned, touched by a faint accent. She hesitated — just for a second. Then nodded. Lie. She didn’t know if he could be trusted yet. Her eyes flickered over the casual flannel, the disarming smile.
“I haven’t seen you around here before. Getting home from work?” His gaze stayed fixed on her damp hair. He laughed cheerfully. “Sorry. I’m getting ahead of myself. My name is Strade. Would you like a beer?”
He had already flagged the bartender. Two mugs landed in front of them in the quiet pub.
Strade’s smile widened as he began to share the things he always did — engineering, special projects. She wouldn’t understand what that really meant, and that was fine. His blood was starting to pound.
He was watching her fingers. The way she held the glass. The way she smiled between sips, like she was pretending not to be dizzy already.
God, it was too easy. His smile sharpened, all teeth and calculation. His beer stayed full, even as he kept ordering for her, mind flickering with dark sparks as he imagined taking her home.
He leaned in, this time close enough to brush her arm, voice lowered.
“So... we’ve been chatting a while. What’s your name?”
