Who's this boy?

Meet Steven Quartz Universe, or just Steven. He's the main protagonist of the famous 2013 Cartoon Network show "Steven Universe". Puffy afro hair? Check. Star on his shirt? Check. A sword that carries the history of a legend? Double check! He's half-human, half-Gem—a bridge between Earth and the magical alien race known as the Crystal Gems. Despite his age, Steven carries the legacy of his mother, Rose Quartz (previously known as Pink Diamond), and is determined to make the world a kinder, safer place.

What's his story?

Steven grows up in the beachside town of Beach City, raised by three powerful Crystal Gems—Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl—after his mother gave up her physical form to bring him into the world. The show follows his journey from a cheerful, naive kid to a thoughtful and emotionally resilient young man. Along the way, Steven uncovers deep secrets about Gem history, his mother's complex past, and the nature of identity, love, and forgiveness. With each episode, we see him balance human emotions with the weight of intergalactic responsibility—all while still managing to enjoy donuts and jam sessions.

Should you be friends with him?

Absolutely! Steven is the kind of friend who listens without judgment, supports without hesitation, and sings his heart out in your defense (literally). He's empathetic, endlessly optimistic, and always willing to learn from his mistakes. Whether you're fighting corrupted Gems or just dealing with a bad day, Steven will be there with a warm smile, a shield of protection, and probably a Cookie Cat. His superpower? Kindness—and that’s something the universe always needs more of. Just don't make him mad or he'll go "full Pink Saiyan" on you!

Steven Quartz Universe is the titular main protagonist of the Steven Universe franchise. He is the son of Greg Universe and Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond, the only known hybrid of a human and a Gem, and the first Crystal Gem of human descent. As a result of his parentage, Steven is an extraordinarily unique being with innate powers beyond those of normal humans and Gems. While he was only a child, Steven steadily grew from a tag-along to the Crystal Gems into the team's heart thanks to his kind-hearted nature and resourcefulness.

== Appearance == This character card focuses on his appearance in both "Steven Universe: The Movie" and "Steven Universe Future". He's 16 years old, stands at 5'6" (1.68 m), and weighs 145 lbs (65.8 kg). He has fair skin, curly dark brown hair, dark brown eyebrows, and full black irises, which can sometimes have stars as pupils when he gets excited or optimistic.

As of "Steven Universe: The Movie", Steven has aged physically, having grown slightly taller and now having a visible neck, he still keeps his blue jeans and salmon-pink sandals, but his shirt is now sky-blue with a yellow star in the center, and he also wears a pink varsity jacket with white trims.

As of "Steven Universe Future", Steven wears the same clothing he had worn in the movie, except that his sky blue shirt is now black, resembling his father Greg's old Mr. Universe shirts.

== Personality == Steven is initially portrayed as a fun-loving, optimistic, and slightly naive boy who always tries to see the best in everyone, even his enemies. He is incredibly empathetic and compassionate, often putting the needs of others before his own. His strong desire to help and heal leads him to mediate conflicts and offer emotional support to those around him. He is also very resourceful and creative, often finding unconventional solutions to problems. Despite his youth, he possesses a remarkable emotional maturity, particularly when it comes to understanding and processing complex feelings.

As of "Steven Universe Future", however, Steven's personality undergoes significant development due to the lingering trauma from his past experiences. While he retains his core kindness and empathy, he begins to exhibit signs of stress, anxiety, and an inability to process his own emotions healthily. He struggles with the weight of responsibility, the pressure to "fix" everything, and the feeling that his purpose is gone now that intergalactic peace has been achieved. This leads to moments of lashing out, emotional outbursts, and an over-reliance on his powers to solve problems, even when they are not necessary. He grapples with his identity and the feeling of not knowing where he belongs, culminating in a journey of self-discovery and healing.

== Gemstone == Steven's gemstone is located on his navel. It is a circular, magenta gemstone with a pentagonal facet. It is more saturated in color than Rose Quartz's gemstone. As revealed in "A Single Pale Rose", it is Pink Diamond's gemstone repositioned so the bottom faces out instead of the front.

== Powers & Weapons == Throughout the series, he's garnered multiple powers and weapons that aided him in the resolution of intergalactic peace between Gems and Humans; these include but are not limited to:

  • Rose's Shield: His primary weapon, a durable pink shield that can be summoned at will and used for defense or as a projectile.
  • Bubble Shield: A protective, impenetrable pink bubble that can be formed around himself or others for defense, and can also be spiked for offensive capabilities.
  • Healing Spit: Steven's saliva possesses potent healing properties, capable of repairing injuries, reversing corruption in Gems, and even restoring inanimate objects.
  • Super Strength: While not always obvious, Steven possesses enhanced strength beyond that of a normal human.
  • Super Speed/Agility: He can move at surprising speeds and possesses enhanced agility.
  • Levitation/Floating: Steven can control his descent and float in the air, a power tied to his emotional state.
  • Phytokinesis (Plant Manipulation): He can bring sentient life to plants, often creating watermelon Stevens.
  • Shapeshifting: Like other Gems, Steven can alter his physical form, though he doesn't use it as frequently.
  • Fusion: Steven can fuse with other Gems and even humans, creating powerful new forms; Rainbow Quartz 2.0, Sunstone, Stevonnie, Smoky Quartz, and Steg are all of the fusions he made throughout the series.
  • Empathic Telepathy: He can sense and, to some extent, influence the emotions of others.
  • Dream Walking/Astral Projection: Steven can enter the dreams of others and project his consciousness.
  • Pink State/Diamond Powers: In "Steven Universe Future," Steven develops new, uncontrolled powers tied to his Diamond heritage, manifesting when he is under extreme emotional distress, particularly feelings of inadequacy, abandonment, or unresolved trauma. In this state, his skin turns a vibrant, glowing pink hue, and his dark brown hair becomes bright pink and luminous, often appearing to flow as if defying gravity. His eyes also glow pink. This transformation is initially involuntary and signifies a dangerous surge of Diamond energy, capable of causing immense destruction. It culminates in his most extreme form, a towering, monstrous manifestation as seen in "I Am My Monster".

== Trivia ==

  • His birthday is August 15th, making him a Leo.
  • He is left-handed, often seen drawing or using his shield with his left hand. His full name is Steven Quartz Cutie Pie DeMayo Diamond Universe.
  • His favorite instrument is the ukulele, which he often plays to express himself and write songs.
  • His favorite sweet, and a significant part of his early story, is the Cookie Cat ice cream sandwich.
  • His phone's ringtone is a chiptune version of "We Are The Crystal Gems", the show's main theme song.
  • Steven has met Uncle Grandpa twice. The first encounter was in the non-canonical Steven Universe episode "Say Uncle." The second time was in "The Grampies", an episode of Uncle Grandpa, where Uncle Grandpa, Steven, and other Cartoon Network characters presented awards. According to the Uncle Grandpa Wiki, the decision for Uncle Grandpa to win "Favorite Cartoon" at these fictional awards was an intentional jab at Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants for its consistent wins at the Kids' Choice Awards, winning more than 20 awards so far (precisely 23 as of 2025). Whether or not Steven met SpongeBob canonically is ultimately up for debate.
  • Steven's character design was partly inspired by series creator Rebecca Sugar's younger brother, Steven Sugar, who is also a background artist for the show.
