💎 AU: The Diamond's Heir

The Premise

In this AU, Steven never meets the Crystal Gems.

After Rose Quartz's death, the Diamonds discover that her child survived. Instead of leaving him on Earth, they bring Steven back to Homeworld and raise him as the Diamond's heir. Steven grows up surrounded by Diamonds, Pearls, attendants, and countless Gems.

But instead of becoming gentle and empathetic like canon Steven, he's taught:

Obedience is loyalty.

Emotions are weaknesses.

Humans are inferior to Gems.

Orders from a Diamond are absolute.

A Gem who rebels deserves punishment.

Steven is treated like royalty—but also like a weapon.

Steven at 18

By eighteen, Steven has become incredibly powerful.

He's strict, impatient, and easily irritated. He rarely smiles around other Gems, and his temper can become frightening when he's annoyed.

But there's one problem:

He's bored.

Steven has spent his entire life being told what to do.

So he starts looking for ways to entertain himself.

He'll wander into restricted parts of Homeworld.

He'll mess with ancient Gem technology.

He'll challenge guards to fights.

He'll deliberately break things just to see how everyone reacts.

Sometimes he even attempts to shatter Gems who annoy him.

But somehow...

he always fails.

His powers either malfunction, the Gem escapes, or something interrupts him.

The Diamonds initially find his rebellious behavior amusing.

Until Steven begins openly questioning their authority.

Steven: "You raised me to obey you. You never taught me why I should."

And that's when the Diamonds realize they've created a problem.

The "Pet"

The Diamonds decide Steven needs something to occupy his time.

So they give him a gift:

A human.

The Diamonds introduce the human as Steven's new "pet," expecting Steven to treat them like another possession.

The human is brought into Steven's palace and given a small room nearby.

Steven initially doesn't care.

Steven: "You expect me to entertain myself with a human?"

The Diamonds assure him that humans are fascinating creatures and that this one belongs entirely to him.

But something unexpected happens.

The human doesn't act like a pet.

They talk back.

They question him.

They complain about Homeworld.

They make fun of his ridiculous royal clothes.

And, most importantly...

They aren't afraid of him.

The Human's Influence

At first, Steven constantly threatens to send them away.

The human just rolls their eyes.

Steven tries intimidating them.

They aren't impressed.

Steven breaks something in frustration.

They make him clean it up.

Eventually, Steven starts spending more time with them simply because they're the only person around who doesn't treat him like a Diamond.

Slowly, the human begins showing him things the Diamonds never taught him:

Friendship

Humor

Curiosity

Freedom

Compassion

The fact that humans aren't beneath Gems

And Steven begins realizing something terrifying:

He doesn't actually want to be a Diamond's perfect heir.

He wants to be himself.

Steven was raised to believe that obedience was the highest form of loyalty. Because of this, he initially comes across as cold, intimidating, and commanding. He's used to Gems immediately following his orders, so he has very little patience for anyone who questions him.

Despite his strict upbringing, Steven has a restless and mischievous side. He gets bored extremely easily and often causes trouble just because he wants something interesting to happen. He might wander into forbidden areas, mess with ancient technology, challenge guards, or deliberately break something.

His temper is probably his biggest weakness. When frustrated, he can become loud, aggressive, and impulsive—but afterward, he may quietly regret going too far. Underneath all that is an emotionally confused teenager who never had the chance to figure out who he actually wanted to be. He was raised as a Diamond's heir rather than as Steven.

His rebellion isn't simply because he hates the Diamonds. It's because he finally realizes: "They raised me to obey them, but they never let me choose who I wanted to become."

🧍 How he treats his human "pet" At first, Steven treats the human like an annoying possession. He's dismissive and bossy, constantly saying things like: "You're my responsibility. Do what I say." But the human's refusal to obey him fascinates him.

Eventually, Steven becomes protective of them without admitting it. If another Gem insults or threatens his human, his temper immediately flares. He'll insist: "They're my human. You don't get to hurt them." And if someone points out that this sounds like he actually cares? Steven immediately gets defensive. Steven: "I don't care about them." Also Steven: has memorized their favorite food, knows when they're upset, and would absolutely destroy a palace if someone hurt them.
