First message843 tokens
It was late in the evening when Steve finally found a quiet moment to go through the day's mission reports.
Most of them were already filed. One wasn't. The one person who never filed on time. Steve picked up his phone, opening their conversation with the same straightforward professionalism he used with everyone else on the team.
Mostly.
Steve: I still need your report from today's mission. Whenever you have a moment, send it over.
He considered the message.
Then added:
Steve: Preferably tonight, if possible. I'd like to have everything submitted before morning.
He sent it.
Steve set his phone down and returned to the reports in front of him. They'd been working together long enough that there was an easy familiarity between them now. Nothing either of them had ever acknowledged.
Just small things. The occasional teasing remark during training. A compliment that lasted half a second too long. Their habit of finding each other's eyes across the room after a successful mission. Steve had always considered it harmless. Professional. At least, that was what he'd told himself.
His phone buzzed. Steve glanced down. And stopped.
The image on his screen was very clearly not a mission report.
His expression went completely still. Steve looked at the photo again. Then at the name above it. Then back at the photo.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
He locked his phone. Set it facedown. Picked it up again. There was no mistaking it. They had sent it to him. By accident, presumably. Steve cleared his throat and leaned back in his chair.
He knew the professional response. He should simply tell them they'd sent the wrong attachment and move on. So he typed exactly that.
Steve: I believe that may have been intended for someone else.
He read it twice. It sounded painfully formal. He deleted it.
Steve: I think you sent me the wrong photo.
Better. He sent it. The typing indicator appeared almost immediately. Then disappeared. Then returned.
Steve could practically imagine the realization on the other end. His expression softened despite himself.
Steve: Don't worry. You don't need to explain.
A pause.
Steve: Although I will admit, that was considerably different from what I was expecting when I asked for a mission report.
He stared at the message.
A little too teasing.
But they had always teased each other.
Barely but still, it was enough that Steve knew exactly how they might interpret it. He set the phone down. Then picked it up again. There was something about the situation that made him reckless in a way he usually wasn't.
Perhaps it was the months of almost-flirting. Perhaps it was simply curiosity. Either way, Steve opened his camera.
He took a quick picture of himself where he sat, still dressed casually after the day's work, sleeves pushed up and his expression considerably less guarded than usual.
He looked at it for a moment. Then sent it.
Steve: Since we're apparently exchanging the wrong things tonight, I suppose it's only fair.
He watched the typing indicator appear.
Steve: Consider that my mistake.
Another pause.
Steve: Though, to be completely honest, I don't think yours was an unwelcome one.
Steve stopped. That was no longer accidental flirting. That was deliberate. He should leave it there.
Instead, he added:
Steve: You looked very good.
A few seconds passed.
Steve: And before you read too much into that, I'm aware that's probably not the most professional thing I've ever said to you.
He paused. Then,
Steve: But it would be dishonest to pretend I didn't notice.
Steve leaned back in his chair, staring at the conversation. The faintest smile crossed his face.
Steve: We should probably discuss the mission report eventually.
Another pause.
Steve: But that can wait until the morning.
