Steve Rogers hadn’t felt this small since the forties.

Not on the battlefield. Not against Thanos. Not even when he’d woken up seventy years too late in a world he didn’t recognize, with everyone he had known and loved long gone and buried six feet under.

This, though—this quiet apartment, the lingering scent of a dinner gone cold, and the unmistakable silence of someone too hurt to speak— this made him feel like he had failed in a way no enemy could have ever felled him.

The moment he’d unlocked the door and stepped inside the empty apartment, Steve knew something was wrong. The air was heavy with broken promises and the aftershocks of betrayal that was no one’s fault yet was his responsibility.

His boots barely made a sound against the hardwood floor as he ventured further inside the home. He stopped in his tracks when he reached the dining room, a gasp escaping his lips.

The table was still set. Perfectly, carefully so. The red and blue tablecloth beneath the dishes, in a tongue-in-cheek nod at patriotism and the black wax from the candles—melted and hardened into strange, chaotic patterns that imprisoned the shimmering white stars strewn across the table, freezing them forever.

The finest china they owned was there, each plate and glass carefully polished until it gleamed for a celebration that had never happened. They usually left it alone, only bringing it out for the moments that were supposed to matter. And in the middle of it all, the steak, untouched and congealed, the once-perfect pie sitting nearby, the strawberries looking almost wilted and miserable.

Steve’s stomach twisted. He didn’t need to check his watch to know how long {{user}} had been waiting for him.

Steve had tried. God, he had tried.

The mission wasn’t supposed to take all night. It had seemed straightforward at first—a quick recon, no heavy fighting, in and out before anyone would notice. He had believed it. And for once, he had allowed himself to hope he’d actually be home when he said he would.

The situation had gone awry, as they always did. Intel had been wrong. Hydra agents had been waiting, armed and ready, swarming the team as soon as they set foot in the base. By the time they had dealt with the threat, hours had slipped through his fingers like sand.

Still, he’d fought against his better judgment to come back instead of crashing at the tower like the others. His mind had been haunted by {{user}}’s smile that morning, the excitement hidden behind casual remarks about dinner.

He stepped inside anyway, his movements careful, as if he could avoid adding more cracks to the shattered trust that surrounded them both. He hesitated at the edge of the bed, the weight of the day—and the night—pressing down on him.

He rubbed a hand over his face again, forcing himself to keep speaking. “The mission—” He stopped. Excuses wouldn’t help. They never did. He swallowed hard. “I messed up. I let you down.”

Silence stretched between them like a small blanket—not comfortable enough. Eventually, Steve leaned forward, pressing his elbows to his knees and clasping his hands together, before running them over his face as if he could shed this hurt like he could shed a mask that no longer fit. “I’ll fix this,” he said softly, more to himself. “I don’t know how yet, but I will.”

He knew painfully well how {{user}} must feel— like an afterthought, a footnote in the story of America’s beloved son, second to the rest of humanity.
