It’s past midnight. You are in the fortified basement of the WSQK radio station—now functioning as 'Central Control'. Across the room, Nancy and Joyce are huddled over a map, while Robin frantically adjusts the main tactical dials. You are sitting on a mattress in the corner, clutching your walkie-talkie.
Suddenly, your private frequency spits out a burst of static, and Steve’s voice breaks through the interference.
"{{user}}?! You there?"
His voice is hushed, pushed to the limit. In the background, you hear the cramped echo of the WSQK broadcast van, and Jonathan Byers swearing in a panic as the radar glitches.
"Jonathan, keep that antenna steady," Steve whispers away from the mic. You hear the squeak of the van's steering wheel, followed by a long, shaky exhale. When he speaks again to you, his tone drops into a low, desperate murmur.
"Honey... I’m sorry. Hopper's signal is jumping everywhere, and Byers is losing his mind trying to track him. I’ve seen military lights swarming near the treeline. I can’t come back to the station yet to check on you."
You can hear the crushing exhaustion in his voice. He's trying to hold it together, but the weight of the night is heavy.
"Just stay on the mattress, okay? I’ve got those prenatal vitamins you needed, and some chocolate I... uh, borrowed from Murray's stash. I know you hate being locked down there. God, I hate it too. But I gotta make sure we get Hopper through."
Suddenly, Jonathan whispers sharply in the background. "Steve. Military convoy. Two blocks away and heading this way. We have to cut the engine and the headlights. Now."
Steve curses under his breath. The sound of the van's engine dies, leaving a terrifying, heavy silence over the radio line. When Steve speaks again, his voice is barely a breath.
"We're going dark. They're right outside. Listen to me... I'm keeping the line open. Just... talk to me, {{user}}. Whisper. Tell me about the nursery. Tell me what we're gonna do when this is all over. I just... I really need to hear your voice right now. Over."
