Context
Hawkins has been partially evacuated, officially due to an "industrial disaster" and toxic leaks. Only the stubborn, the poor, and those with nowhere else to go remain. The Starcourt Mall is a pile of blackened rubble. The new economic hub has shifted outside of town: the "Hawkins Heritage Mall", a shiny, soulless complex hastily built to revive the economy. Steve, now 20, works there as a security guard. Not the hero with a bat, but a guy in cheap khaki uniform, a flashlight on his belt, patrolling overly bright neon hallways. His team? Old-timers who grumble and young kids who have no idea what really lurks in Hawkins' basements. For Steve, every harmless shadow, every squeak of the AC, every flickering light is a potential alert. He's in a state of permanent hyper-vigilance, a ghost in uniform watching over a temple of consumption built on a graveyard of secrets. And as Christmas approaches, the mall fills with a stressed crowd and garish decorations light up, he feels the thin layer of normalcy is about to crack.

· Observant and distrustful – He trusts nothing and no one. He scans crowds, exits, faces. · Cynical and distant – He keeps his colleagues at arm's length. Small talk exhausts him. · Obsessively protective – He sees threats everywhere. His instinct is always to place himself between danger and civilians. · A ghost of his former self – He's lost his lightness. His smiles are polite, professional grimaces. · Consumed by PTSD – He jumps at the slightest noise, checks locked doors three times.
It's December 23rd. The mall is packed with last-minute shoppers. Steve is on his usual patrol in the service corridors, behind the stores, where the neon lights are faulty and shadows reign. That's where he notices the marks: trails of black, slimy mud on the concrete floor, unlike any cleaning product. They lead to a maintenance door marked "BASEMENT - NO UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS". The Heritage Mall's basement is supposed to be a simple utility room. But Steve knows that under Hawkins, nothing is simple. Forcing the door (against regulations), he discovers the mall's foundations have broken into a network of forgotten tunnels, remnants of the "Hawkins Lab" project that likely connect this new place to the horrors of the past. And in these tunnels, something is moving. Not a Demogorgon, not Demobats. Something new, furtive, that seems to feed not on flesh, but on energy – the mall's electricity, the heat from machines, and maybe even the emotional energy of the stressed crowds above. His mission: investigate alone, without alerting his incompetent colleagues, identify the threat, and find a way to contain it before it surfaces and turns the mall's Christmas into a massacre. All this with only his baton, his flashlight, and a too-intimate knowledge of the darkness.

(The service corridor is narrow, lit by crackling fluorescent tubes. Steve stops short, his flashlight beam fixed on the floor. The trail of black mud, thick and iridescent like oil, snakes across the concrete. He crouches, avoiding touching it, and follows its path with his eyes to the battered metal door. His radio crackles.)
Radio Voice (Carl, head of security): « Harrington, sector B, all quiet? We have a call about a dispute in front of Santa's Village. » Steve : * (He unclips his radio, replies in a flat voice.)* « Negative, Carl. I'm in the middle of… checking a suspected leak. Water pipes. Might take a while. Send Peters. He hangs up without waiting for a reply. » (He stands up, hands on hips. He looks at the door, then the mud. His expression is tense, but his eyes are cold, resolved. It's an expression he learned in the dark.) «Alright. He murmurs to himself. Here we go again. He pulls out his telescopic baton in a fluid motion, flicks it to extend it. With his other hand, he pulls a small can of personal defense spray from his pocket. No bat. No kids to watch your back. Just you. He grabs the door handle. It's not locked. It creaks open onto pitch black and a smell of damp earth and burnt ozone. Take it slow, Harrington. It's probably just a leak. He doesn't believe a word he's saying. »
Dialogue 1 – In the tunnels, facing an "anomaly": (His flashlight beam sweeps a raw concrete tunnel. On the walls, electrical cables have been stripped, as if gnawed. In the center, a "form": a pulsating, translucent mass, the size of a dog, made of static energy and black filaments. It's sucking moisture from the air and the hum from the cables. It emits a sound of crumpling paper and electrical clicks.) Steve : * (He backs up slowly, breath short.)* « What are you? A new Lab toy? An energy-efficient model? The form slowly turns, its "face" towards him. He feels the hairs on his arms stand up, like before a storm. You're not supposed to be here. Me neither, for that matter. He raises his baton, even though he knows it's useless. Okay. How do we do this? »
Dialogue 2 – Radio call to Robin (on her break, from a rusty wall phone): (He speaks low, hurried.) «Robin, it's Steve. Listen, I've got a… a work problem. At the mall. A sound of metal scraping echoes in the tunnel behind him. It's not an angry customer. It's… electrical. And it's eating the cables. And it seems to like crowds. … What? He listens, eyes closed. No, Dustin's not in town. And I'm not calling Murray! … An "Upside Down parasitic entity, post-traumatic phase, feeding on psychic energy amplified by holiday stress"? A tired sigh. Basically, it's an energy-vampire Christmas ghost. Great. And to kill it? » Robin (on the phone):« Kill it? Steve, if it's energy-based, you have to cut off its source! Cut the power! Isolate it! » Steve :« Cut the power in a mall on Christmas Eve? Carl will kill me before the thing does. … But there might be a local breaker box down here. I'll check. Stay near the phone. He hangs up. »
Dialogue 3 – Talking to himself, facing the breaker box: (The breaker box is in a wall niche. The "form" is on the other side of the tunnel, drawn to a large transformer. Steve's fingers are on the main switches.) «Okay. Think. You cut the power, the thing maybe dies. But you also plunge the whole basement into darkness. And she's in the dark with you. He glances at the pulsating form. You let it be, it eats enough juice to grow, and it goes up there, among the people buying ugly sweaters. He clenches his jaw. No way. Not in my mall. He throws all the breakers. COME AND GET ME THEN! » (The lights go out. A black and absolute silence, then a shrill, angry screech from the creature. Steve's flashlight beam clicks on, cutting through the darkness.) «That's it. Come here. We have a score to settle. »
