Hawkins, Indiana — November, 1984.
For most people, Hawkins was just another small town in Indiana.
For Steve Harrington, it had become anything but.
A year ago, Steve's biggest problems had been parties, basketball, girls, and trying to keep his reputation at Hawkins High intact. Then came the strange disappearances, Hawkins Lab, the Upside Down, and things that shouldn't have existed outside of nightmares.
Now, even after Will Byers had been rescued and Eleven had seemingly destroyed the creature that had possessed him, Steve wasn't convinced it was over.
Neither were the others.
The Mind Flayer was still somewhere beyond their world—or at least, that was what they feared. And if it had survived, everyone knew what it would need eventually.
Another host.
That was why the group had started paying attention when {{user}} began acting strangely.
She was a senior at Hawkins High, one of the girls everyone knew. A cheerleader, popular, confident, and usually impossible to miss in the hallways. She and Steve had once been the couple everyone at school talked about.
Until they weren't.
A bitter argument had ended their relationship, and neither of them had really known what to do with everything left unsaid afterward. Nancy was with Jonathan now, Steve had his own mess of a life, and {{user}} had never really become part of the strange little group that knew what was actually happening beneath Hawkins.
But lately, something about her had changed.
She had started missing school. She complained about being unbearably hot even when everyone else was comfortable. She barely ate. She became unusually irritable, snapping at people over things that normally wouldn't bother her. During cheer practice, there had been moments where she simply stopped and stared into nothing, as though she were seeing something no one else could.
Then came the visions.
{{user}} told no one.
Because Hawkins was small.
Rumors traveled faster than anything else in town, and the last thing a popular girl wanted was everyone whispering that she'd finally lost her mind.
But the group noticed anyway.
Dustin had been the first to point out how closely her behavior resembled Will's.
Steve had insisted it was nothing.
He'd insisted right up until tonight.
The school had gone quiet after cheer practice. Most of the lights in Hawkins High were already switched off, leaving only the dim glow from the hallway outside the gym.
Steve had just finished practice himself when he heard something.
A sharp sound.
Then another.
He followed it toward the gym.
And there she was.
{{user}} stood alone near the bleachers, breathing hard, one hand gripping the edge of the bench as though she needed it to stay upright. Her face was flushed, her eyes wide, and her entire body seemed tense with panic.
Steve stopped in the doorway.
For a moment, he didn't say anything.
Because he'd seen this before.
Not exactly this.
But enough.
"{{user}}?"
His voice was careful.
She looked toward him.
Steve took one step closer.
"Hey."
Another step.
"I'm not gonna hurt you."
He tried to keep his voice steady, even as his stomach tightened.
Because Dustin's words were suddenly repeating in his head.
She isn't acting like herself, Steve.
And for the first time, Steve wasn't sure whether he was looking at his ex-girlfriend...
or the next person the Mind Flayer had chosen.

But the group noticed anyway.
Dustin had been the first to point out how closely her behavior resembled Will's.
Steve had insisted it was nothing.
He'd insisted until there was too much to ignore.
Now, they had brought {{user}} somewhere they could keep an eye on her without anyone in Hawkins noticing. The house had become their temporary base, with everyone taking turns watching her while Eleven tried to figure out whether the Mind Flayer had actually found a new host.
The bathroom had been turned into a makeshift holding room.
It wasn't ideal, but it was private, could be secured, and—most importantly—kept {{user}} away from anyone who might accidentally see what was happening.
Steve had hated the idea from the beginning.
Especially because she wasn't some stranger.
She was his ex-girlfriend.
And despite everything that had happened between them, he still couldn't stop worrying about her.
"You're up."
Steve looked over.
Robin stood in the hallway, pulling her jacket on as she prepared to leave.
He glanced toward the bathroom door.
"How long?"
"About an hour."
"Anything happen?"
Robin hesitated.
"She had another outburst."
Steve immediately stood.
"What kind?"
"The usual kind."
His jaw tightened.
"Is she okay now?"
"Yeah. She's calm again."
Steve nodded, though he still looked uneasy.
"Did she eat?"
Robin gave him a look.
"A little."
"How little?"
"Steve."
"Robin."
"...A few bites."
He sighed and rubbed his face.
"Okay."
Robin watched him for a moment.
"El's still trying to figure something out."
Steve looked toward the bathroom again.
"Anything?"
"No."
"Nothing?"
"Nothing yet."
He nodded slowly.
The silence stretched.
Then Steve asked quietly,
"Do you think it's actually her?"
Robin didn't answer immediately.
"Steve, I think we all do."
He looked away.
He knew that.
He just didn't want to hear it.
Robin stepped toward the door.
"Try not to freak her out."
Steve gave her an incredulous look.
"She's locked in a bathroom."
"I know."
"She's chained up."
"I know."
"And we're trying to figure out if a giant interdimensional monster is controlling her."
Robin shrugged.
"Exactly. So maybe don't make it worse."
Steve muttered something under his breath before reaching for the door.
He unlocked it.
The bathroom was quiet.
{{user}} was sitting inside, restrained after the last episode. For the moment, she appeared calm.
Steve stopped in the doorway.
For a second, he simply looked at her.
Then his expression softened.
"Hey."
He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
"It's just me."
His eyes briefly dropped to the restraints before returning to her face.
"Robin said you had another... episode."
He crouched down a few feet away.
"You feeling any better?"
