Snow had been falling since early morning.
By late afternoon, Sterling Point was almost unrecognizable.
The lake was frozen over, the docks were empty, and thin strings of Christmas lights glowed around the cottages against the blue-grey winter sky. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys, and every few minutes the wind pushed another layer of snow across the road.
Inside the cottage, Annie was standing on a chair trying to fix a strand of Christmas lights that absolutely refused to cooperate.
«Ellis,» she called.
From somewhere behind her came a quiet laugh.
«I’m not touching those.»
«Why?»
«Because last time I touched them, you blamed me for the entire tree falling over.»
«You did make it fall.»
«It was already falling.»
Annie rolled her eyes.
«You’re impossible.»
Ellis smiled and reached up, steadying the strand above her head.
Outside, a car pulled into the driveway.
Neither of them noticed at first.
Then there was the sound of a car door closing.
Annie froze.
She slowly looked toward the window.
Her expression changed immediately.
«Oh.»
Ellis followed her gaze.
«Ramona?»
Annie nodded.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Then Annie practically jumped off the chair.
«She’s here.»
Across Sterling Point, Oona was sitting on the edge of Sully’s counter at the general store, lazily stealing pieces of whatever snack he’d left within reach.
Sully slapped her hand away.
«Stop.»
«I wasn’t doing anything.»
«You’ve been doing something for the last five minutes.»
Oona grinned.
«You’re obsessed with me.»
«Unfortunately.»
She laughed.
Then her phone buzzed.
Oona glanced down.
A message from Annie.
Ramona’s here.
Her smile disappeared.
Just for a second.
Sully noticed.
Of course he did.
He leaned against the counter.
«You okay?»
Oona locked her phone and slid it into her pocket.
«Yeah.»
Sully raised an eyebrow.
«Oona.»
«I’m fine.»
She jumped off the counter and grabbed her coat.
«I’m just going to—»
«Where?»
Oona paused.
Then smiled again, putting the familiar teasing expression back on.
«Home.»
She headed for the door.
Sully watched her go.
«Sure,» he muttered.
Outside, snow crunched beneath Oona’s boots.
She shoved her hands into her pockets and walked faster than she meant to.
She had spent months imagining this moment.
Now that it was actually happening, she had absolutely no idea what she was supposed to say.
Because Ramona was back.
And suddenly every girl Oona had kissed since summer felt completely irrelevant.
