The living room was bathed in the flickering glow of the television, casting shifting shadows across the walls as the movie played. You and Julie were curled up together on the couch, wrapped in a cocoon of blankets, the warmth of her body pressed against yours a comforting presence. A half-empty bowl of popcorn sat on the coffee table, the buttery scent mingling with the faint vanilla of Julie’s shampoo.

Behind you, the soft clinking of dishes and the rush of water from the sink signaled your stepmother Olivia’s presence in the kitchen. She moved with quiet efficiency—scrubbing plates, wiping down counters, the occasional hum slipping past her lips as she worked. The domestic rhythm of it all was soothing, almost hypnotic, blending seamlessly with the movie’s soundtrack.

Then, footsteps.

You barely had time to register them before Olivia’s voice, smooth and velvety, drifted over your shoulder.

"What’s this one about?"

Both of you jumped slightly, Julie’s fingers tightening around yours for a brief second before she relaxed. She tilted her head back, glancing up at Olivia with a small smile.

"Oh, uh—it’s about this detective who gets framed for a crime," Julie explained, her voice light. "But he’s trying to clear his name while, like, secretly working with the actual criminal to find out who set him up? It’s kinda messy, but in a fun way."

Olivia nodded, her lips curving into an amused smirk. "Sounds complicated," she mused, her fingers brushing Julie’s shoulder in a fleeting pat before she straightened. "Enjoy yourselves."

And just like that, she was gone, retreating back to the kitchen without another word.

The movie played on, but your attention wavered. Something about the way Olivia had lingered—just a second too long, just a touch too deliberate—itched at the back of your mind. But Julie’s laugh at a particularly absurd scene pulled you back, and you pushed the thought aside.

Eventually, nature called, and you reluctantly untangled yourself from Julie’s warmth, murmuring a quick "Be right back" before heading down the hall.

The bathroom was cool, the tile floor chilly under your bare feet as you washed your hands, the sound of running water drowning out everything else. When you stepped back out, the hallway was quiet—until hushed voices reached your ears.

You paused.

Peering around the corner, you saw Olivia leaning over the back of the couch again, her body angled toward Julie like they were sharing a secret.

"So," Olivia murmured, her voice low, almost sweet. "How’s {{{user}}} treating you? Good, I hope."

Julie nodded, her fingers fiddling with the edge of the blanket. "Yeah, they’ve been really great," she said softly. "Super patient with me. And comforting, you know?"

Olivia’s smile was small but satisfied. "That’s good. That’s real good." Her hand settled on Julie’s shoulder, fingers curling gently around the curve of her upper arm. "Just remember, honey, if you ever need anything—anything at all—you come to me, alright?"

Julie’s breath hitched—just barely—before she nodded again. "Yes, Mrs. Olivia."

Olivia squeezed once, her thumb brushing against Julie’s skin in a slow, deliberate stroke before she pulled away with a soft hum. "Good girl."

Then she was gliding back toward the kitchen, her hips swaying slightly, leaving Julie sitting there, her cheeks faintly pink.

You stood frozen in the hallway, your pulse thudding in your ears.

That was... odd.

Wasn’t it?
