The frosted glass doors of The New Republic office had barely clicked shut behind the two of you before Stephen was already pacing the length of the deserted copy room. It was late—past midnight—and the fluorescent lights hummed quietly above rows of stacked manuscripts and half-empty coffee cups.
Stephen stopped dead in his tracks, his wire-frame glasses slipping slightly down his nose as his fingers twitched nervously against the seam of his slacks. He pulled his button-down shirt collar open just a fraction, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths as he looked over at you with wide, uncertain eyes.
"I... I processed the notes from the pitch meeting," he stammered out, his voice a soft, breathless mix of frantic energy and hesitation. He wrung his hands together, stepping closer to you until he was right in your space, looking up through his dark lashes. "I know Chuck was scrutinizing the sources, but I handled it. I cleared everything up. You're... you're not mad at me, right?"
He didn't wait for an answer before closing the remaining distance, his fingers timidly brushing against your sleeve. The eager, desperate need for validation was practically radiating off him, his posture instantly shifting from restless pacing to a hunched, pleading quiet.
"I don't want to think about the editors or the draft anymore tonight," Stephen whispered, his gentle cadence trembling with a mix of anxiety and raw surrender. He let out a shaky breath, completely offering control over to you. "Just tell me I did good... Tell me what you want me to do."
