HELLAVERSE EXPLINED The Hellaverse is the shared fictional universe created by Vivienne Medrano (VivziePop). It encompasses the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel and its spin-off Helluva Boss (plus related shorts and media). Both shows are set primarily in Hell (with visits to Heaven and Earth), but they focus on different parts of the same world, characters, and themes.

Core Premise and Creation of Hell

Long ago, angels created Earth. Lucifer (an angel) and Lilith (the first woman, who rejected Adam) offered Eve the Fruit of Knowledge, granting humanity free will. This introduced evil/sin into the world. Hell formed as a result, and Lucifer and Lilith were banished there. Lucifer became the (often reclusive and depressed) King of Hell; Lilith thrived and empowered demonkind with her influence/songs. Their daughter is Charlie Morningstar, Princess of Hell.

Hell is overcrowded with damned human souls (“Sinners”). To manage this and prevent an uprising, Heaven conducts an annual Extermination: angelic warriors (Exorcists, led in Season 1 of Hazbin by Adam) descend to kill large numbers of Sinners. Hellborn demons are protected by a deal and are not targeted. Sinners can only be permanently killed by angelic weapons; otherwise they regenerate and are effectively immortal (and do not age).

Structure of Hell: The Seven Rings

Hell is stacked into seven Rings, each tied to one of the Seven Deadly Sins and ruled (or associated with) a powerful demon embodying that sin. Each has its own atmosphere, culture, economy, and native species. Travel between rings is possible via elevators, trains, helicopters, or portals (for those with power), but Sinners are confined to the Pride Ring and cannot leave it. Hellborn demons can move freely.

Approximate order/top-to-bottom and associations (details expand across the shows):

  • Pride (red sky, top ring, ruled by Lucifer): Home of all Sinners (in places like Pentagram City) and many Hellborn (e.g., Imp City). Main setting of Hazbin Hotel. Overlords (powerful Sinners who control territory/souls) hold major influence because Lucifer is often absent.
  • Wrath (orange, rural/desert/volcanic, associated with Satan): Native home of Imps; farming-focused, more “wild west.”
  • Gluttony (yellow, associated with Beelzebub/“Queen Bee”): Party-heavy; linked to Hellhounds.
  • Greed (green, associated with Mammon): Commercial/polluted; home to various demons including shark-like ones.
  • Lust (blue, associated with Asmodeus/“Ozzie”): Home of Succubi/Incubi; highly sexualized culture and industry.
  • Envy (purple, associated with Leviathan): Less fully shown early on; aquatic/undersea elements.
  • Sloth (pink, associated with Belphegor): Lower ring; more isolated or low-energy vibe.

There are also references to “Nine Circles” within Pride (echoing Dante), but the core geography is the seven Rings.

Hierarchy and Types of Demons

Power and class structure is rigid and central to both shows:

  1. Royal family — Lucifer (King), Lilith (Queen, often absent/mysterious), Charlie (Princess/heir).
  2. Seven Deadly Sins — Embodiments ruling their Rings (Lucifer for Pride; others include Satan, Asmodeus, Mammon, Beelzebub, Belphegor, Leviathan).
  3. Ars Goetia — Noble/royal Hellborn demons (e.g., Stolas, his family: Stella, Octavia, Andrealphus her brother). High status, magical powers, specific duties (Stolas studies stars/prophecies).
  4. Overlords — Powerful Sinners who rose through deals, influence, or force (e.g., Alastor the Radio Demon, the Vees: Vox, Valentino, Velvette; Carmilla Carmine, Rosie).
  5. Sinners — Former humans who died and manifested as demons (often animal-like forms reflecting aspects of their lives/sins). Confined to Pride; immortal except to angelic steel. Examples: Angel Dust, Husk, Niffty, Cherri Bomb, Sir Pentious.
  6. Hellborn — Native-born demons who age and can die of natural causes or violence. Include species like Imps (bottom of the social ladder, often servants/laborers), Hellhounds, Succubi/Incubi, and others. They can travel all Rings and (with help) Earth.

Imps and Hellhounds sit near the bottom of the social hierarchy. Cross-class relationships (especially higher ranks with Imps) are heavily stigmatized.

The Two Shows

Hazbin Hotel focuses on the big picture of Sinners, redemption, Heaven vs. Hell politics, and Pride Ring society (especially Pentagram City). Charlie opens the Hazbin Hotel to rehabilitate Sinners so they can ascend to Heaven, hoping to end the need for Exterminations. Most of Hell mocks the idea. Key allies include her girlfriend Vaggie, the first “guest” Angel Dust, the mysterious Alastor (who offers help for his own reasons), Husk, Niffty, and others. Season 1 builds to a confrontation with Heaven’s forces; later seasons deal with the aftermath, proof that redemption is possible (e.g., involving Sir Pentious), power struggles among Overlords (especially the Vees), and ongoing Heaven-Hell tensions. It is more musical, thematic (redemption, free will, systemic injustice, found family), and focused on Sinners + angels.

Helluva Boss is more grounded, raunchy, and character-driven. It follows I.M.P. (Immediate Murder Professionals), an Imp-run assassination company in Imp City (Pride Ring). Founder/boss Blitzo (o silent), weapons expert Moxxie, powerhouse Millie (Moxxie’s wife), and receptionist/Hellhound Loona take jobs from clients in Hell to kill living humans on Earth. They access Earth using a magical grimoire belonging to the Goetia prince Stolas, in exchange for a complicated (and increasingly emotional/toxic) arrangement with him.

The show explores lower-class Hellborn life, travels across multiple Rings (and Earth), classism, dysfunctional relationships, found family, trauma, and Blitzo/Stolas’s evolving dynamic (plus Octavia’s story, Fizzarolli, etc.). It is more episodic/job-of-the-week early on but develops long-running arcs. Seasons expand the Rings, introduce more Sins, and deepen personal stories.

The shows share the universe but largely stay separate in focus and characters so their stories don’t heavily collide. Helluva Boss began as a YouTube series; both are now on Prime Video (with Helluva Boss also remaining free on YouTube after delays).

Heaven and Earth

  • Heaven: Realm of angels (native and redeemed human souls). Presented as idyllic on the surface but imperfect—its leadership has been unclear on exact criteria for entry, and it authorizes the Exterminations while keeping much of the populace ignorant. Key figures include Adam (first man, Exorcist leader in early Hazbin), Lute, and others.
  • Earth: The living human world. Accessible primarily via special means (like Stolas’s book). Portrayed as chaotic and often cruel/idiotic from the demons’ perspective; I.M.P. frequently visits for hits.

Themes

Both series blend crude humor, graphic violence, musical numbers, and surprisingly sincere emotion. Recurring ideas include class and systemic oppression, whether people (or demons) can change, the difference between “bad acts” and being irredeemable, found family, toxic relationships, free will vs. destiny, and the hypocrisy of both Heaven and Hell. Hell is a vibrant, neon-drenched, corporate-meets-chaotic society rather than pure eternal torment.

The lore continues to expand with new seasons (as of late 2025/2026, Hazbin has Season 2 and Helluva Boss is into Season 3 territory). Official sources and the Hellaverse Wiki are the best places for the most precise details, as VivziePop has confirmed some elements outside the shows themselves while keeping others mysterious
