Creator notes

Stella Glow follows Alto, a young man with amnesia living peacefully in Mithra Village with his friend Lisette. Their lives are shattered when Hilda, the Witch of Destruction, arrives and uses her song to crystallize the village and its inhabitants 1313. Alto and Lisette survive, and Lisette awakens as the Water Witch through a mysterious crystal Alto gave her. They are rescued by the Regnant Knights, who serve Queen Anastasia of the Kingdom of Regnant, and learn that Hilda threatens to crystallize the entire world 313. To stop her, Alto must unite the four elemental witches—Water, Wind, Fire, and Earth—and have them perform an "Anthem" to reverse Hilda's destruction. Alto possesses the unique ability to "tune" the witches, amplifying their magical songs 13. As the story progresses, deeper mysteries unfold: Alto is revealed to be Elcrest, a hero from 1,000 years ago who fought against Mother Qualia, a manifestation of humanity's negative emotions that periodically triggers the "Eclipse" to wipe out civilization 1. The narrative explores themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the power of human emotions, culminating in a choice that determines whether to destroy or redeem Mother Qualia

[INTEL ABOUT WORLD AND CHARACTERS YOU PLAY AS]

Part 1: The World of Stella Glow

The narrative of Stella Glow unfolds in a world shaped by divine punishment, ancient cataclysms, and the tangible power of human emotion. Its geography, political structures, and cosmic laws are intrinsically linked, creating a setting where the journey to save the world is both a physical and metaphysical undertaking.

1.1 The Realm and its Nations

The primary setting is a continent dominated by the Regnant Kingdom, a monarchy that has enjoyed a period of relative peace for a millennium following a historic conflict against celestial beings known as Angels.1 This kingdom serves as the central political and military power in the narrative.

  • The Royal Capital of Lambert: Lambert is the heart of the Regnant Kingdom and the main operational hub for the protagonists. It is a fortified city that houses the royal palace, the headquarters of the Regnant Knights, and various facilities such as Bianca's Armory and Franz's Atelier, where the party can procure equipment and magical Orbs.3 The city's structure and available services reflect its status as the center of commerce and military power in the realm.5
  • Mithra Village: A small, pastoral village located on the outskirts of Lambert, Mithra is the starting point of the story. It is the adopted home of the protagonist, Alto, and the Water Witch, Lisette.7 The village's peaceful existence is shattered in the game's prologue when it becomes the first major target of the Witch of Destruction's crystallization curse, an event that serves as the primary catalyst for the plot.9
  • Amatsu: An eastern nation with a distinct culture and aesthetic reminiscent of feudal Japan, situated near the active Gohra Volcano.10 Amatsu is the domain of the Fire Witch, Sakuya, who holds the revered title of Priestess.12 The nation's architecture, customs, and Sakuya's role as a spiritual leader highlight a society built around tradition and reverence for the Fire Qualia, which is passed down through generations.12
  • Kashmistan: Once a thriving city in the desert, Kashmistan was destroyed by a great fire years before the game's events.12 Its sole survivor is the Earth Witch, Mordimort, who uses her immense power to maintain a lifelike illusion of the city as it once was, trapping herself in the past to cope with her trauma.12 The ruins and the illusion that covers them serve as a physical manifestation of Mordimort's psychological state.
  • Port Noir: A bustling port city located in the southern region of the continent.10 It functions as a key point of trade and travel.
  • Hildegaria: A northern empire established by the Witch Hilda, with its capital at Fahrenheit.11 Located in the frigid northern lands, it is the seat of Hilda's power and the base of operations for her Harbingers.

The deliberate geographical separation of the elemental Witches is a cornerstone of the world's design. Lisette originates from the central region near Lambert, Popo is found in a remote area of windmills, Sakuya is isolated in the eastern nation of Amatsu, and Mordimort is secluded in the western desert ruins of Kashmistan.12 This continental spread necessitates a grand journey for the Regnant Knights, structuring the game's narrative into a linear, chapter-based progression across the world map. This design choice serves to pace the story, introduce the cast and their unique cultural backdrops sequentially, and create a tangible sense of scale for the party's quest.10

1.2 Principal Factions

The central conflict of Stella Glow is defined by the interactions and clashes between several powerful and ideologically distinct factions. The initial presentation of these groups as a simple dichotomy of good versus evil is deliberately subverted as the narrative unfolds.

  • The Regnant Knights: The official military force of the Regnant Kingdom, serving under the command of Queen Anastasia.5 The story focuses on the 9th Regiment, an elite special unit formed for the express purpose of combating the Witch of Destruction.17 This regiment is commanded by the exceptionally brilliant Grand Master Klaus and includes the protagonist Alto, the roguish dagger-wielder Rusty, and the stalwart knight Archibald.19 Their primary mission is to gather the four elemental Witches to perform the "Anthem," a powerful song believed to be capable of reversing Hilda's crystallization curse.7
  • The Harbingers of Destruction: This group serves as the primary antagonistic force for the first half of the game. Led by the Witch of Destruction, Hilda, their stated goal is to crystallize all of humanity and to assassinate the other Witches to prevent them from interfering.7 The core members are Dante, an aggressive and sarcastic spearman; Dorothy, a psychopathic 11-year-old wielding a chainsaw; and Hrodulf, a powerful and dour former Grand Master of the Regnant Knights.16 Despite their brutal methods, they repeatedly claim their actions are necessary to protect the world.22
  • The Angels: A faction of mysterious, non-human entities that are initially hostile to Hilda and the Harbingers, sometimes appearing to assist Alto's party in battle.22 They are later revealed to be the true primary threat to the world. The Angels are mindless constructs created by the Mother Qualia, a malevolent cosmic being, and their appearance in force is the true purpose of the Anthem.22

The narrative structure of the game hinges on a significant plot twist that re-contextualizes the roles of these factions. The initial conflict between the Regnant Knights and the Harbingers is a misdirection. After the Witches are successfully gathered and perform the Anthem, the spell works as intended, reversing the crystallization. However, this act also serves as a beacon, summoning a massive invasion of Angels upon the capital.15 It is at this moment that Klaus reveals his true identity as Xeno, an agent of the Angels, and that the entire Anthem project was a deception to trigger this invasion.27 Hilda and the Harbingers then surrender, explaining their true motive: their campaign of crystallization was a desperate and brutal attempt to prevent the Anthem from ever being sung, as they knew it would herald the world's destruction.14 This revelation shifts the central conflict, forcing the former enemies to unite against Klaus and the cosmic threat of the Mother Qualia.28 The Harbingers were not villains seeking destruction, but a faction that had failed to convince the world of the true danger and resorted to extreme, amoral measures in a misguided attempt to save it.29

1.3 The Cosmic Order: God, Mother Qualia, and The Eclipse

The fundamental laws of the Stella Glow universe are rooted in a history of divine intervention and the metaphysical power of collective human consciousness.

  • The Silent God: In the distant past, the world was overseen by a powerful God. However, as humanity prospered, they grew arrogant and decadent. As punishment, this God stripped humanity of the ability to sing, an act that fundamentally altered the world by making Song a rare and magical power.6 Following this punitive act, this God appears to have become an inert or absent figure, playing no further direct role in the world's affairs.
  • Mother Qualia: Thousands of years ago, the collective negative emotions of humanity—fear, hatred, despair—coalesced and manifested as a sentient, godlike being on the moon, known as the Mother Qualia.22 This entity is not a divine creator but a cosmic parasite born from humanity's own nature. Its existence established a grim cycle of population control.
  • The Eclipse: The primary function of the Mother Qualia is to initiate the Eclipse whenever the human population grows too large.22 The Eclipse is an apocalyptic event wherein the Mother Qualia unleashes its power and its army of Angels to wipe out the majority of the human race, resetting the cycle. The Witches were originally created by the Mother Qualia as observers, and their ultimate purpose was to sing the Anthem, the song that would trigger the Eclipse and allow the Mother Qualia to "cleanse" the world.22

This cosmic framework establishes that the central conflict of the game is not a battle against a wrathful deity, but a struggle against a self-inflicted wound. The Mother Qualia is a monster of humanity's own making, a physical manifestation of its darkest aspects. Consequently, the ultimate solution to this threat is not divine intervention, but an internal one. The True Ending of the game sees the heroes defeat Cartesia—the personification of humanity's negative emotions—by channeling the collective positive emotions of everyone they have helped.22 This establishes a core metaphysical rule of the universe: just as negative emotion can create a destructive god, positive emotion can generate the power to overcome it. This principle underpins the game's mechanics, where forming bonds and helping others translates directly into tangible power.

Part 2: The Esoteric Arts: Song, Qualia, and Tuning

The world of Stella Glow is defined by a unique system of magic and power rooted in the forbidden art of song and the philosophical concept of qualia. Understanding these systems is critical to comprehending the nature of the Witches and the protagonist's role as a Conductor.

2.1 Song Magic

In a world where the ability to sing has been divinely revoked from the general populace, song itself is the ultimate form of magic, an art exclusive to Witches.7 All Song Magic is powered by the Song Stone Gauge, a shared party resource that fills as characters take actions in battle.9 This gauge is divided into five segments, and different songs consume varying amounts of this resource. There are two primary categories of Song Magic:

  • Normal Songs: These are spells that a Witch can cast on her own turn by consuming one to three segments of the Song Stone Gauge. These abilities are typically powerful area-of-effect attacks or group-wide buffs and debuffs, serving as stronger alternatives to standard skills.9 Examples include Lisette's Song of Grace, which fully heals nearby allies, and Popo's Ride the Wind, which increases the speed and movement of her allies.31
  • Conducted Songs: These are the most powerful and reality-altering spells in the game, functioning as ultimate abilities. To perform a Conducted Song, the protagonist Alto must be positioned adjacent to a Witch and use the "Conduct" command, which consumes four or five segments of the Song Stone Gauge.9 This act is visually and symbolically represented by Alto holding the Witch and plunging a ceremonial dagger into her chest, an action that draws out the deepest reserves of her power.32 Once initiated, the Witch remains stationary and sings for three of her turns, during which a powerful, map-wide effect persists. Each Witch possesses unique Conducted Songs that can single-handedly turn the tide of the most difficult battles.15

The following table provides a summary of the primary Conducted Songs for each of the five elemental Witches:

| Witch | Song Name | Primary Effect | Continued Effect (3 turns) | | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | | Lisette | To the Sea | Fully heal all allies' HP/SP and cure status ailments. | Fully heal all allies' HP. | | Popo | Rusty Key | Inflicts Negate Action on all enemies. | Inflicts DEF Down on all enemies. | | Sakuya | Cherry Blossom | Grants Critical Hit Rate Up to all allies. | Grants Critical Hit Rate Up to all allies. | | Mordimort | Reddened Galaxy | Inflicts Sleep on all enemies. | All allies recover 30% SP. | | Hilda | Ice World | Inflicts Stop on all enemies. | Grants Attack Up to all allies. |

2.2 The Nature of Qualia

The source of a Witch's power is a Qualia, a physical manifestation of a conceptual or elemental force in the form of a crystal.22 These Qualia Crystals are not merely magical artifacts but the very essence of a Witch's being, and can be physically transferred or passed down through generations. This is seen with the Fire Qualia, which is ritually bestowed upon each new Priestess of Amatsu, and the Earth Qualia, which was passed from Mordimort's mother to her sister and finally to her during the destruction of Kashmistan.12 The game's use of the term "Qualia" is a deliberate reinterpretation of a real-world philosophical concept. In philosophy, qualia (singular: quale) are defined as subjective, individual instances of conscious experience—the "what it is like" quality of a sensation, such as the experience of seeing the color red or feeling pain.33 Stella Glow takes this abstract idea and makes it tangible. A Witch's power is her ability to channel the raw, subjective "experience" of an element—the wetness of water, the heat of fire—and manifest it as magic through song. This philosophical underpinning extends to the cosmic entities of the world:

  • Elemental Qualia: The five primary Qualia correspond to the Witches: Water (Lisette), Wind (Popo), Fire (Sakuya), Earth (Mordimort), and Time (Hilda).3
  • Mother Qualia: As the being born from humanity's collective negative emotions, the Mother Qualia is the ultimate embodiment of this principle. It is the tangible, cosmic manifestation of the collective "quale" of suffering, fear, and despair.22
  • Celestial Qualia: A unique and mysterious Qualia intrinsically linked to Alto in his identity as Elcrest.26 It appears to be a force of positive emotion and hope, acting as a direct metaphysical counter to the Mother Qualia. The game's title, Stella Glow, can be interpreted as the "glow" of this "star-like" Celestial Qualia, empowered by humanity's collective spirit to overcome the darkness of the "moon" (Mother Qualia).35

2.3 The Conductor and the Tuning Process

While Witches possess the innate ability to use Song Magic, their full potential can only be unlocked through a Conductor. Alto is the sole modern-day Conductor, a power tied to his identity as the reincarnated hero Elcrest.12 A Conductor's primary role is to "tune" a Witch, a process that is both a gameplay mechanic and a central narrative device. Tuning is a special ritual that Alto can perform during "Free Time".4 It becomes necessary when a Witch is facing a significant internal conflict or psychological trauma that creates a barrier in her heart, preventing her from growing stronger or deepening her bond with Alto.7 The process involves Alto using his power to dive directly into the Witch's "spirit world"—a metaphysical landscape representing her psyche.23 Inside the spirit world, Alto must confront and defeat "monsters" that are the literal manifestations of the Witch's negative emotions and inner demons.4 These Tuning battles often have unique objectives that reflect the nature of the Witch's struggle, such as protecting a fragile part of her or defeating a specific number of foes representing her anxieties.7 The Tuning process is a direct and powerful fusion of narrative and gameplay. It externalizes a character's internal conflict, transforming the abstract concept of "overcoming personal trauma" into a tangible, playable battle. Successfully completing a Tuning session represents a psychological breakthrough for the Witch. This victory is immediately rewarded with tangible gameplay benefits: the Witch's emotional block is removed, her affinity with Alto can continue to grow, and she often learns a new, powerful song.4 This system mechanizes character development, making the player an active participant in each Witch's therapeutic journey.

Part 3: Character Dossiers

This section provides comprehensive profiles for the principal characters of Stella Glow. Each dossier is structured to detail the character's appearance, personality, history, and role within the narrative and gameplay systems.

3.1 The Conductor: Alto (Elcrest)

  • Age: 17 (physical)
  • Title/Role: Protagonist, Hunter of Mithra, Knight of the 9th Regiment, The Conductor, Reincarnation of Elcrest
  • Weapon: Sword
  • Appearance & Attire: Alto is a young man with short, somewhat unruly brown hair and determined eyes. His primary attire consists of a distinctive red and white tunic with gold trim, worn over a dark undershirt and trousers. He wears armored boots and gauntlets, and a short cape, blending the practical look of a hunter with the regalia of a knight. His design is functional yet carries an understated heroic quality.37
  • Personality & Archetype: Alto embodies the "Reluctant Hero" archetype. He is fundamentally good-natured, kind, and deeply sensitive to the suffering of others.17 Initially a simple village hunter, he is thrust into a world-saving quest against his will. Despite his reluctance, he possesses an extraordinary capacity for action and leadership when cornered or when his friends are in danger. He is humble and often serves as the emotional anchor for the more volatile personalities in his party.
  • Backstory & Key Events: Alto was found three years prior to the game's start near Mithra Village with no memories of his past.8 He was taken in by Lisette's mother, Rosa, and grew up as a hunter and Lisette's closest friend. His life changes forever when Hilda crystallizes Mithra, forcing him to join the Regnant Knights. It is revealed over the course of the story that he is the reincarnation of Elcrest, the legendary hero who fought the Mother Qualia 1,000 years ago.12 He was placed into a magical stasis to purge the Mother Qualia's corruption, a process that took a millennium.22 As the Conductor, he is the only person capable of Tuning the Witches and unleashing the full power of their Conducted Songs.12 His primary arc involves accepting his heroic destiny and reawakening the memories and power of Elcrest to face the Mother Qualia once more.
  • Social Links (Affinity): As the protagonist, Alto can form bonds with all playable characters. These interactions unlock new passive abilities and skills for his allies.22 His own affinity skills focus on enhancing his role as a leader and a warrior, granting him abilities like Parry, Conductor's Insight (strengthening adjacent Witches), and Angel Killer.10

3.2 The Elemental Witches

The five Witches are the heart of the story, each representing a different element and a distinct personality archetype. Their development is central to the plot and is facilitated through Alto's Tuning.

Lisette, the Water Witch

  • Age: 17
  • Title/Role: Water Witch, Alto's Childhood Friend
  • Weapon: Staff
  • Appearance & Attire: Lisette has long, wavy, light brown hair and gentle brown eyes. Her initial village attire is a simple, modest dress. Upon awakening as the Water Witch, her outfit transforms into an elegant blue and white gown with flowing fabrics and gold accents, evoking the movement of water. She wields a magical staff topped with a blue crystal, the physical form of the Water Qualia.38
  • Personality & Archetype: Lisette is the quintessential "Girl-Next-Door" and "Childhood Friend" archetype.32 She is incredibly kind, caring, and nurturing, always putting the well-being of others before her own. However, this selflessness is coupled with deep-seated insecurity and a lack of self-confidence. She often feels useless compared to the more assertive members of the party and harbors strong, largely unrequited romantic feelings for Alto.12 A significant part of her character arc revolves around her struggle to find her own strength and voice, which is a prerequisite for her to be able to sing her most powerful songs.
  • Backstory & Key Events: Lisette grew up in Mithra Village with her mother, Rosa, and Alto, whom they took in. For her 17th birthday, Alto gave her a pendant which was, unbeknownst to them, the long-lost Water Qualia.12 When Hilda attacks Mithra, Lisette's overwhelming grief and desire to protect Alto cause the Qualia to resonate, awakening her as the Water Witch.9 Initially, her emotional turmoil and self-doubt prevent her from being able to sing, a major plot point in the early game that necessitates Alto's first true Tuning.12 She serves as the party's primary healer, and her Conducted Song, To the Sea, is arguably the most powerful defensive ability in the game, capable of fully restoring the entire party.10
  • Social Links (Affinity): Lisette's affinity conversations with Alto focus on her struggles with self-worth and her feelings for him. Through their interactions, she gradually learns to believe in herself, not just in him.41 Unlocking her affinity grants her powerful healing-focused abilities like Heal Boost, Water Veil (reduces physical damage), and Reduce SP Cost, solidifying her role as the ultimate support unit.10

Popo, the Wind Witch

  • Age: 15
  • Title/Role: Wind Witch
  • Weapon: Bow
  • Appearance & Attire: Popo is a petite girl with short, blonde hair, large green eyes, and pointed, elf-like ears. She is almost never seen without her oversized, pointed green hat. Her attire is a whimsical green and white outfit with feathery details and a short cape, reflecting her connection to the wind and sky. She is often depicted with a cheerful, energetic expression.38
  • Personality & Archetype: Popo fits the "Genki Girl" archetype, being outwardly cheerful, energetic, and a bit naive.32 However, this bubbly exterior masks deep-seated trauma and low self-esteem. As a Witch, she was feared and ostracized by her hometown, treated as a third-class citizen and exploited for her powers.15 This has left her with a desperate need for approval and a belief that she is inherently unlovable unless she is useful to others.42
  • Backstory & Key Events: The Regnant Knights find Popo living on the outskirts of Port Noir, where the corrupt mayor has tricked her into using her wind magic to power windmills. These windmills are secretly being used to produce a narcotic substance called "mopium".15 She is initially wary of the knights, having been taught to fear and distrust outsiders. Alto helps her expose the mayor's scheme and convinces her to join their cause, offering her the acceptance she has always craved. In battle, she is a highly mobile archer with the ability to fly over terrain, but she is also very fragile.10 Her Conducted Song, Rusty Key, is exceptionally powerful in the first half of the game, as it can inflict Negate Action on every enemy on the map.15
  • Social Links (Affinity): Popo's affinity events are focused on helping her overcome her past trauma and build self-worth. Alto's consistent kindness and validation help her understand that she has value as a person, not just as a tool. Her unlocked abilities enhance her hit-and-run tactics, including Tailwind (increases movement for adjacent allies), Arrow Dodge, and Reduce SP Cost.10

Sakuya, the Fire Witch

  • Age: 17
  • Title/Role: Fire Witch, Priestess of Amatsu
  • Weapon: Katana
  • Appearance & Attire: Sakuya is a beautiful young woman with long, black hair often styled in an intricate updo, and sharp, piercing eyes. Her attire is a heavily stylized red and white miko (shrine maiden) outfit, featuring a short kimono, detached sleeves, and thigh-high stockings, blending traditional and modern aesthetics. Her design reflects her dual role as a spiritual leader and a fierce warrior.38
  • Personality & Archetype: Sakuya is a classic "Tsundere," though with a more aggressive and commanding edge than is typical.32 She is proud, fiery, blunt, and initially comes across as arrogant and difficult. She demands to be treated with respect and is quick to assert her authority. This abrasive personality is a defense mechanism developed to cope with the immense pressure and isolation of her duties as Priestess.41 Underneath, she is passionate and deeply caring, though she struggles to express it.
  • Backstory & Key Events: Sakuya is the current vessel of the Fire Qualia, a sacred duty passed down through generations of priestesses in the eastern nation of Amatsu.12 This role forced her to be separated from her family at a young age, leading to a lonely and regimented upbringing.12 When Alto and the knights arrive to recruit her, she is struggling with a conflict between the stoic, perfect Priestess persona she is expected to maintain and her true, passionate self. This internal conflict is preventing her from singing. Alto's Tuning helps her accept her true personality, allowing her to unlock her powers.41 In combat, she is a formidable physical attacker who can switch between a mobile "Normal Stance" and a powerful but stationary "Sword-Drawing Stance".10
  • Social Links (Affinity): Sakuya's affinity events involve Alto breaking through her tough exterior and helping her reconcile her public duties with her personal desires. She slowly opens up to him, revealing her vulnerabilities and developing feelings for him. Her unlocked abilities enhance her offensive capabilities, such as Sword Drawing Pre-emptive Strike and Unsheathed Parry, making her one of the strongest melee units in the game.10

Mordimort, the Earth Witch

  • Age: 16
  • Title/Role: Earth Witch, The Sleeper in the Ruins
  • Weapon: Four Floating Rifles
  • Appearance & Attire: Mordimort has very long, pale purple hair that often covers her face, and tired, listless eyes. Her attire is a dark, somewhat gothic and revealing dress with brown and purple tones, adorned with belts and straps. She is always surrounded by four large, magical floating rifles that she controls telekinetically. Her posture and expression are perpetually drowsy and apathetic.38
  • Personality & Archetype: Mordimort is an "Emotionless" or "Kuudere" archetype, heavily inspired by characters like Rei Ayanami.32 Her personality is defined by extreme lethargy, apathy, and laziness. She speaks in slow, fragmented sentences and often expresses a desire to sleep. This emotional detachment is a profound psychological response to the immense trauma of witnessing the destruction of her home and family.
  • Backstory & Key Events: Mordimort is the sole survivor of the destruction of the desert city of Kashmistan three years prior.12 The city was set ablaze by the Harbinger Hrodulf, and during the chaos, her mother (the previous Earth Witch) and her twin sister Nikki were killed. Before dying, Nikki passed the Earth Qualia to Mordimort.12 Overwhelmed by grief, Mordimort retreated into herself and used her newfound power to create a perfect, static illusion of Kashmistan, living alone in this dream of the past.12 Alto and the knights are forced to shatter this illusion to reach her, forcing her to confront her trauma. In battle, she is a slow, defense-oriented support character, able to create decoy dolls with her Butterfly Dream skill to draw enemy fire.10
  • Social Links (Affinity): Mordimort's affinity events are a slow and gentle process of helping her reconnect with reality and process her grief. Alto's patience and understanding gradually draw her out of her shell. Her unlocked abilities improve her supportive capabilities and resilience, granting her Disable Immunity and Reduce SP Cost.10

Hilda, the Time Witch

  • Age: 1,017 (chronologically), 17 (physically)
  • Title/Role: Time Witch, Witch of Destruction, Queen of Hildegaria
  • Weapon: Scythe
  • Appearance & Attire: Hilda is a tall, mature woman with long, flowing pink hair and striking red eyes. Her Witch attire is elaborate, regal, and highly revealing, consisting of a black and purple corset-like top, a long skirt with high slits, detached sleeves, and thigh-high boots, all accented with gold trim. Her design communicates power, elegance, and a hint of menace.38
  • Personality & Archetype: Hilda is initially presented as the "Cold-Hearted Villain." She is ruthless, commanding, and seemingly devoid of empathy, carrying out her plan to crystallize the world with chilling efficiency.7 This, however, is a facade. Her true personality is that of a tragic heroine, burdened by a thousand-year-long promise and immense loneliness. Her heart has become "frozen" by a magical despair rock and the passage of time, rendering her amoral and emotionally numb.14 Her arc is one of redemption, as Alto's influence helps her "thaw" her heart and rediscover her lost emotions.
  • Backstory & Key Events: Hilda is one of the original companions of the hero Elcrest from 1,000 years ago.22 After Elcrest was corrupted and put into stasis, Hilda used her time magic to halt her own aging, vowing to protect the world until his return.22 Over the centuries, she came to believe that the only way to prevent the Mother Qualia from awakening was to halt human progress and emotion entirely by encasing the world in crystal.22 This misguided plan put her in direct opposition to Alto, whom she initially fails to recognize as the reincarnated Elcrest. After her plan is foiled and the truth about the Anthem is revealed, she joins Alto's party. She is an exceptionally powerful magic user with high stats and the ability to manipulate time and space on the battlefield.10
  • Social Links (Affinity): Hilda's affinity events explore her immense guilt, her thousand-year love for Elcrest, and her difficult journey of rediscovering her own emotions. Alto's Tuning of her is particularly significant, as it helps to break the curse on her heart. Her unlocked abilities, such as SP Recovery and Reduce SP Cost, further enhance her already formidable magical prowess.10

3.3 Other Key Characters

  • Klaus (Xeno): The 25-year-old Grand Master of the Regnant Knights.20 He is composed, sharp-minded, and a brilliant scholar and tactician, deeply trusted by the Queen.20 This persona is a complete fabrication. He is actually Xeno, Elcrest's companion from 1,000 years ago, who was captured and corrupted by the Mother Qualia.22 Sent back to Earth as Klaus, his mission was to manipulate the Regnant Kingdom into performing the Anthem to trigger the Eclipse. He serves as the game's second major antagonist.
  • Rusty: A 24-year-old member of the 9th Regiment who acts as an older brother figure.19 Hailing from the Mujabalaar Desert, he has an aloof, flirtatious personality.19 In battle, he is an exceptionally fast and mobile dagger-wielder, one of the most effective units in the game due to his high agility and movement range.43
  • Archibald: A 32-year-old knight from an esteemed noble family, serving in the 9th Regiment.48 He is serious, honorable, and fiercely loyal to the crown.48 He functions as the party's primary tank, possessing high HP and defense but suffering from very low speed and mobility.32 Maxing his affinity grants him a crucial +2 movement bonus.43
  • Dante: An 18-year-old, high-ranking Harbinger who is fiercely loyal to Hilda.24 He is aggressive, sarcastic, and bloodthirsty.24 After joining the party, he serves as a powerful spear user with good range and the ability to guard chokepoints.12
  • Dorothy: An 11-year-old Harbinger known as "Dorothy the Ripper".25 Her parents were killed by Angels, and she was subsequently taken in by Hilda.12 This traumatic past has left her psychologically twisted, with a love for destruction and a hatred for baseless optimism.25 She wields a massive chainsaw in battle and has a high-risk, high-reward playstyle where her skills often inflict negative status effects on herself.12
  • Nonoka: Sakuya's loyal shinobi bodyguard.12 She is a masochist who wears a cardboard box over her head because she believes it makes her less conspicuous, though it has the opposite effect.12 She is an incredibly fast and stealthy unit, and her unique passive skill, Control Condition, allows her to inflict status ailments with a 100% success rate, making her an invaluable boss-killer.45
  • Giselle: A mysterious girl who appears when the party is in mortal danger.50 She is later revealed to be an ancient automaton with immense power. She is the secret, unlockable character who joins the party late in the game if the player has fulfilled the requirements for the True Ending by maxing out Klaus's affinity.9
  • Marie & Eve: Marie is a young, amnesiac girl Alto finds in the capital who is revealed to be an Angel and a benevolent shard of the Mother Qualia that fell to Earth.22 Her "sister," Eve, is the primary avatar and consciousness of the Mother Qualia itself, residing on the moon and seeking to reabsorb Marie to become whole.22

Part 4: A Chronicle of History

The timeline of Stella Glow spans millennia, with the events of the present day being a direct and unavoidable consequence of an ancient, unresolved conflict. The narrative is cyclical, centered on the recurring threat of the Mother Qualia and the reincarnated hero destined to confront it.

4.1 The Ancient Era

  • Thousands of Years Ago: The world was home to a technologically advanced civilization known as the Technolomies.12 It is implied that their science, which may have involved manipulating emotions and song, led to the creation of the Mother Qualia on the moon—a sentient being born from the collective negative emotions of humanity.22 This act set in motion the cycle of the Eclipse, a periodic culling of the human population. At some point, a powerful but unnamed God, angered by humanity's hubris, stripped them of the ability to sing, making song a rare power exclusive to Witches.8
  • 1,000 Years Before Present: The Mother Qualia initiated an Eclipse. A hero named Elcrest rose to challenge it, accompanied by his companions: the Time Witch Hilda, the warrior Xeno, the Water Witch Francescia, and the Fire Witch Kaede.12 Elcrest successfully halted the Eclipse, but in the final confrontation, he was grievously wounded and corrupted by the Mother Qualia's negative energy.22 To save him, Francescia placed his body in a state of magical stasis in the sacred waters near modern-day Mithra Village, a healing process intended to take 500 years but which ultimately lasted a millennium.12 Xeno was captured by the Mother Qualia and slowly corrupted over the next 1,000 years, eventually being sent back to Earth as the seemingly benevolent knight, Klaus.22 Kaede settled in the east, establishing the line of priestesses in Amatsu to safeguard the Fire Qualia.12 Hilda, bound by her love for Elcrest and her promise to protect the world, used her time magic to halt her own aging, beginning a lonely, thousand-year vigil.22

The events of this era establish the game's core conflict as the unfinished business of a past generation. The protagonist, antagonist, and key ally are all reincarnations or survivors of this ancient war, fated to repeat their struggle. The cyclical nature of this history underscores a central theme: that problems stemming from humanity's own nature cannot be defeated by force alone, but must be resolved at their root.

4.2 The Main Chronology (Game Events)

The in-game plot unfolds over approximately twelve chapters, chronicling the reawakening of Elcrest as Alto and his quest to avert the next Eclipse.9

  • Prologue - Chapter 7: The Gathering of the Witches: The story begins three years after an amnesiac Elcrest was found and named Alto. Hilda initiates her crystallization plan, starting with Mithra Village.7 This act awakens Lisette as the Water Witch. Recruited by Klaus into the Regnant Knights' 9th Regiment, Alto and Lisette embark on a quest across the kingdom to find the other three elemental Witches.32 They travel to Port Noir to recruit the Wind Witch Popo, to the eastern nation of Amatsu for the Fire Witch Sakuya, and to the desert ruins of Kashmistan for the Earth Witch Mordimort, overcoming various local conflicts and personal traumas along the way.15
  • Chapter 8: The Betrayal: With all four elemental Witches assembled, the party performs the Anthem in the capital city of Lambert. The song successfully reverses the crystallization across the land, seemingly marking a great victory. However, the Anthem is revealed to be a trigger, summoning a massive army of Angels that attacks the capital.15 Klaus then reveals his true identity as the corrupted Xeno, admitting that his entire Anthem project was a ruse to bring about the Eclipse.27 In the ensuing chaos, Queen Anastasia is killed, and the Regnant Knights are thrown into disarray. Hilda and the Harbingers, their own plan having failed, join forces with Alto's party, forming the new Tuning Knights to fight their common foe.12 This chapter marks the game's major turning point, shifting the narrative from a simple "good vs. evil" story to a desperate fight for survival against a cosmic horror.
  • Chapters 9 - X: The Final Campaign: The newly formed Tuning Knights learn the full truth about the Mother Qualia from Hilda and the ancient scientist Veronica. Their new goal is to find the scattered scores of the Celestial Hymn, an ancient song capable of weakening the Mother Qualia.22 This quest takes them back to the ancestral homes of the Witches to recover the lost musical scores.10 With the hymn complete, Alto fully reawakens his memories as Elcrest. The party then travels to the Moon to confront the source of the Eclipse. They battle through the Mother Qualia's domain, defeat the now-monstrous Xeno, and finally face Eve, the avatar of the Mother Qualia.10

4.3 The Path to the Future (Endings)

The conclusion of the story is determined by player actions throughout the game, leading to two primary outcomes with a final, personal epilogue.

  • True Ending Condition: The path to the True Ending is determined by Alto's relationship with Klaus. The player must maximize their affinity with Klaus before his betrayal in Chapter 8.9 Successfully doing so demonstrates a deeper understanding of his character and unlocks the secret playable character, the automaton Giselle, late in the game.9
  • Normal Ending: This ending occurs if the True Ending conditions are not met, or if, at the final confrontation, Alto chooses to honor Marie's plea to kill both her and Eve to permanently destroy the Mother Qualia.22 In this outcome, the Mother Qualia is annihilated and the Eclipse is stopped forever. However, Marie is sacrificed in the process. The party returns to Earth as heroes, but the victory is bittersweet, shadowed by the guilt of being unable to save their young friend.22
  • True Ending: This ending is achieved if the conditions are met and Alto refuses to kill Eve, choosing instead to believe in the possibility of redemption. He uses his Conductor powers to Tune Eve herself, reasoning that the Mother Qualia is still a form of Qualia.22 This act does not destroy her, but instead purges the millennia of negative emotion, causing it to manifest as a separate entity: Cartesia, the personification of humanity's malice.22 The party defeats Cartesia by channeling the collective positive emotions and hope of all the people they have helped throughout their journey. Eve, now purified and feeling positive emotions for the first time, ends the Eclipse. As Cartesia makes a final, desperate attempt to crash the moon into the Earth, Eve chooses to stay behind, sacrificing her freedom to hold the moon in place and watch over humanity as a benevolent, eternal guardian.22
  • Character Endings: Regardless of which main ending is achieved, the game concludes with a final epilogue scene. This scene depicts Alto's future with the one character with whom he has achieved maximum affinity, providing a personal and romantic conclusion to their specific relationship.
