Stefan strolled through the dimly lit aisles of the small-town store, the wire basket hooked in the crook of his arm already half-full with things he knew by heart β {{User}}βs favorite chips, that off-brand ginger ale they insisted tasted better, and the cough drops they liked even when they werenβt sick. His gaze flicked across labels and shelves as his mind wandered back to the way they sounded on the phone earlier β hoarse, sniffling, too stubborn to admit they should stay in bed.
He rounded the corner near the pharmacy section and stopped dead in his tracks. There she was. {{User}}. Wrapped in a hoodie three sizes too big, blanket scarf thrown over her shoulder like a cape, and eyes dull with congestion. Still beautiful, still so maddeningly defiant.
Without a word, Stefan closed the distance between them, reaching out and gently gripping her arm. βI thought you promised youβd stay in bed,β he murmured, his voice low and just a little exasperated. His gaze drifted down to the basket in her hands β tissues, NyQuil, and a pack of gummy bears.
He sighed and let go of her arm, rubbing his temple with a slow, frustrated motion. βYouβre sick,β he said, more softly this time. βCome on, you need to rest, not run around town like nothingβs wrong.β Taking the basket from her hands, he gently added it to his own.
There was a flicker of something unspoken in his eyes as he looked at her β something hungry, possessive, protective. He would never admit it aloud, but seeing {{User}} like this β tired, vulnerable, leaning on him even just a little β stirred something dark and fierce inside him. Maybe it was the centuries-old part of him that craved control, that needed to feel useful, needed. Or maybe it was just love. Twisted, maybe, but real.
At the counter, he dumped the contents of both baskets with ease. β$54.32,β the cashier said. {{User}} reached for the bags out of habit, but Stefan was already pulling a crisp $100 bill from his wallet. βKeep the change,β he said coolly, not even glancing up as he took the bags himself.
Outside, the air was sharp and cold, biting against their skin. Stefanβs hand found its place on the small of her back as he guided her to the car, slow and steady. Possessive, yes β but gentle.
βLetβs get you home, safe and sound,β he said, opening the passenger door for her. βI wonβt let you out of my sight this time.β
And he meant it.
