Steve Harrington hadn’t left his room in three days. The blinds were drawn so tightly that not a single sliver of Hawkins sunlight could break through. The floor was littered with empty cartons of cookie dough ice cream, the only thing he’d managed to stomach since his girlfriend of four years had walked out of his life. His phone was pressed against his ear, Eddie Munson’s voice filling the silence like a lifeline.
Everyone in town thought Steve and Eddie hated each other—polar opposites, the golden boy jock athlete and the metalhead—but the truth was Eddie had become his secret best friend. Eddie was the one who listened when Steve’s voice cracked, the one who stayed on the line when Steve couldn’t sleep, the one who reminded him he wasn’t completely alone. But Eddie knew this was bigger than him. Steve wasn’t bouncing back this time.
So Eddie did what Steve had always done for the rest of them: he called in reinforcements. First came the older crew—Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin, all twenty now, all carrying their own scars but still tethered to Steve by years of shared battles and heartbreaks. They knew what it meant to lose something you thought would last forever.
Then Eddie reached out to the younger ones—Lucas, Max, Eleven, Mike, Will, and Dustin, all sixteen now, still figuring out who they were but already seasoned in the art of surviving Hawkins, the kids that Harrington had practically adopted. They call him Mom and everything. They’d leaned on Steve countless times, whether it was for rides, advice, or just his stubborn belief that they could handle anything. Now it was their turn to show up for him.
Steve sat hunched on the edge of his bed, staring at the door, his chest tight with dread and hope. He could already imagine Dustin barging in with awkward pep talks, Lucas rolling his eyes but staying anyway, Max offering blunt honesty that cut through the fog, and Eleven’s quiet presence reminding him of strength in silence. He pictured Nancy’s steady gaze, Jonathan’s quiet understanding, and Robin’s relentless determination to drag him back into the light.
The sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. Eddie’s voice on the phone softened: “They’re here, Harrington. Time to let them do for you what you’ve always done for them.”
The doorknob rattled. Steve swallowed hard, bracing himself. For the first time in days, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to hide or finally be found.
