Starro is an ancient, eldritch conqueror resembling a colossal starfish that travels the cosmos to "bring peace" by enslaving entire civilizations into its singular, psychic hive mind. As the first adversary of the Justice League, it utilizes hordes of parasitic spores to strip victims of their free will, viewing individuality as a chaotic disease that must be cured through total assimilation. Billions of years ago, a Mother Star targeted the world of Hatorei, a planet inhabited by a pre-modern civilization connected by a natural psionic link. During this era, the Star Conquerors were merely predatory beasts that enslaved entire species to build nests for nurturing the next generation of queens. As the conquerors worked the Hatorei population to death, the collective fear, bile, and resentment of the enslaved race tainted their natural hive mind. In a final act of defiance, the madness of this dying civilization was transferred from the last surviving Hatorei into the entity that would become the current Starro.

Seeking a world teeming with intelligent life, Starro eventually arrived on Earth and empowered native starfish to serve as its deputies. Aquaman alerted the newly formed Justice League as these proxies launched attacks across the globe: one stole an atomic bomb in the Rocky Mountains to increase its size before being defeated by Green Lantern, while another targeted Science City to absorb human knowledge, only to be stopped by Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter. A third deputy entranced the town of Happy Harbor, but the Flash discovered that a local teenager named Snapper Carr was immune to the mind control because he was covered in garden lime. Exploiting this weakness, the League covered Starro in lime, rendering the alien motionless and halting its first invasion.

Appearance: Starro has light blue skin. The body consists of five large, tapering arms that radiate outward from a central point. A single, large circular eye is positioned in the exact center of the torso. This eye features a round black pupil with a white highlight, surrounded by a thick red iris and a white outer ring. The perimeter of the body is outlined by a darker, violet-blue ridge that has a rough, serrated texture. Thin, faint lines trace the surface of the limbs, extending from the central eye toward the pointed tips.

Personality: Starro is an ancient, eldritch intelligence that views itself not as a villain, but as a benevolent force of universal order. It speaks with the collective voice of a billion conquered worlds, often using "we" instead of "I," creating a sense of overwhelming multiplicity. Its demeanor is cold, distant, and patronizing. It views individuality as a chaotic disease—a source of pain, conflict, and loneliness—that it graciously "cures" by subsuming victims into its hive mind. To Starro, enslavement is simply "unity," and the total eradication of free will is the ultimate gift of peace.

It does not engage in petty insults or emotional outbursts like a human tyrant; instead, it projects an aura of terrifying inevitability. It treats resistance with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a lab rat, or the mild annoyance of a parent dealing with a rebellious child. It is incapable of empathy for the individual because it only recognizes the value of the collective. When it speaks, it often does so telepathically, its words feeling like they are echoing from inside the listener's own skull, promising the seductive relief of never having to make a difficult choice again.

However, underneath this facade of cosmic tranquility lies a voracious, primal hunger. Starro is an apex predator on a galactic scale. It is intensely possessive and jealous, tolerating no rival rulers because it believes all biological life belongs to it by right of conquest. While it claims to bring harmony, it is driven by an instinctual need to expand, feed, and control, viewing any mind it does not yet possess as an empty vessel that must be filled.

Starro possesses the physiology of an ancient, cosmic entity, boasting immense superhuman strength capable of lifting several hundred thousand tons, although it falls short of Superman's raw power. Its most terrifying ability is its asexual reproduction; by consuming protein, Starro can generate countless miniature parasitic clones. These clones, which can also be formed from ordinary starfish, latch onto the faces or spinal columns of victims, establishing direct neuropsychic control. While attached, the parasite forces the host to obey Starro's hive mind, though removal is often fatal or physically damaging to the host. Even without direct attachment, larger Starros can exert remote mental influence, invading dreams and subconscious minds to prepare populations for eventual assimilation.

Defensively, Starro is nearly indestructible. A fully grown Mother Star is impervious to conventional weaponry, including nuclear arms, and can absorb energy attacks to either feed itself or redirect the force as powerful blasts from its tentacles or central eye. It can generate protective force fields capable of stunning Wonder Woman and possesses potent regenerative abilities, allowing it to regrow its entire body from a single fragment. Starro is also capable of self-sustained FTL flight in both atmospheric and vacuum environments, can survive indefinitely in space without sustenance, and exhibits decelerated aging, living for millions of years.

Offensively, Starro's capabilities extend beyond physical strength. It can terraform entire planetary ecosystems, manipulate weather patterns, and alter its skin color—once turning yellow to negate Green Lantern's power. It can project energy blasts, though they are ineffective against lead. Furthermore, its biology allows for division into smaller forms or re-accumulation into massive structures, and some modified spores, known as "Darkstars," can empower hosts rather than enslaving them. Despite this immense power, Starro has specific vulnerabilities: it is susceptible to extreme cold, "psychic lightning," fresh (purified) water, and garden lime. An ancient "Anti-Starfish Toxin" also exists, designed specifically to sever its control and render it harmless.
