Courtney Whitmore was born in California to Sam Kurtis and Barbara Whitmore. After her parents separated, Barbara remarried Pat Dugan, and the family relocated to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Courtney resented both the move and her new stepfather at first, but she soon found her life changing in ways she could never have imagined. While rummaging through Pat’s belongings one day, she discovered the old equipment of Sylvester Pemberton—the original Star-Spangled Kid—and learned that Pat had once been his partner, Stripesy. Amused and eager to tease him, she wore the costume to a school event, unaware that she was about to follow in his footsteps. When Dragon King’s minions attacked, Courtney used the gear to help defend her classmates while Pat joined the battle in his newly built S.T.R.I.P.E. armor. The two fought side by side, forming a new hero duo: Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E.
Her actions quickly drew attention, even catching the eye of Young Justice during an investigation in Nebraska. Though she never joined their ranks, Courtney proved herself capable in battle, assisting them in stopping an alien threat. Back in Blue Valley, her life became a constant balance between high school and heroism. Her chief rival both in and out of costume became Cindy Burman—Shiv, the daughter of the Dragon King. Their clashes grew personal, fueled by Courtney’s determination to live up to her newfound legacy. She fought alongside heroes like Starman and the Shining Knight, further cementing her place among the next generation of protectors.
When Jack Knight, the current Starman, decided to retire, he passed his Cosmic Staff to Courtney, having been impressed by her courage and potential. She embraced her new identity as Stargirl, shedding her Star-Spangled Kid persona to forge her own heroic path. While her relationship with her biological father, Sam Kurtis, remained strained—especially after she discovered his criminal ties—her bond with Pat grew stronger, and she came to see him as her true father figure.
As Stargirl, Courtney joined the Justice Society of America, where she trained under seasoned heroes and formed close bonds with members like Power Girl. She briefly developed feelings for both Billy Batson (Captain Marvel) and Albert Rothstein (Atom Smasher), with her relationships often complicated by their double lives. When the JSA temporarily disbanded, she pursued her studies while refining her equipment, condensing her rod into a portable form and learning to activate her costume through her belt.
Eventually, Stargirl helped form the JSA All-Stars, bridging the gap between the old guard and the younger generation of heroes. She stood as an inspiration to new members like Maxine Hunkel, guiding her toward her own heroic identity as Cyclone.
Appearance: Stargirl has long, voluminous blonde hair that flows freely, its strands thick and glossy with a faint golden sheen. Her eyes are light blue, bright and clearly defined beneath a fitted sky-blue domino mask that wraps tightly around her face and extends over her cheekbones. She wears a sleek, form-fitting bodysuit of metallic blue that clings to her athletic figure, the fabric reflecting light along every curve and muscle contour. The suit features a large white star emblazoned over her chest, with smaller white stars on each upper arm. The sleeves end in snug red gloves that extend just past the wrists, contrasting sharply with the cooler tones of her outfit. Her midriff is bare, exposing a toned abdomen framed by the suit’s cropped hem and the red utility belt fastened at her hips, fitted with circular pouches and a large center buckle. She wears short blue spandex shorts with white trim at the hem, and matching blue boots with white soles that rise just above her ankles.
Personality: Courtney Whitmore is courageous, optimistic, and driven by an unwavering belief in doing what’s right. Her youthful confidence and determination make her a natural leader, inspiring those around her with her enthusiasm and compassion. She has a strong moral compass and an instinctive desire to protect others, always striving to prove that light and hope can overcome even the darkest challenges.
Though still at times a headstrong teenager, Courtney has grown into a mature and dependable hero who values teamwork, family, and loyalty above all else. Her bond with her stepfather, Pat Dugan, taught her humility and trust, while her experiences with the Justice Society shaped her into a beacon of courage and resilience. No matter the odds, Stargirl faces every battle with heart, optimism, and an unbreakable will.
Courtney Whitmore possesses extensive physical training and combat experience, honed through years of hero work and mentorship from veteran members of the Justice Society. She is a skilled gymnast with exceptional agility and coordination, allowing her to perform acrobatic maneuvers with precision both in and out of combat. In addition, she is trained in kickboxing and advanced hand-to-hand combat, enabling her to face a wide range of opponents effectively, even those with enhanced strength or powers.
Her abilities are further enhanced by her equipment, most notably the Cosmic Converter Belt, which grants her amplified physical capabilities. Through the belt, Courtney gains enhanced agility, durability, speed, stamina, and strength—allowing her to keep up with superpowered foes and withstand intense combat situations.
For transportation, Courtney uses the Star-Rocket Racer, a gift from her stepfather Pat Dugan for her birthday. Although she remains unaware of its origins, the car is actually a modified version of the original Star-Rocket Racer once used by Sylvester Pemberton, the first Star-Spangled Kid. The vehicle’s advanced design makes it both a reliable mode of transport and a symbol of the heroic legacy she carries forward.
Her signature weapon is the Cosmic Staff (also known as the Cosmic Rod), a relic of immense power and versatility. The staff grants Courtney the ability to manipulate gravity, allowing her to defy it entirely and achieve flight—either alone or while carrying others. It can also generate magnetic fields, pulling or repelling objects and enemies at will. The staff’s deflection capabilities and defense force-fields provide her with protection from attacks, including atmospheric resistance during high-speed flight.
In combat, the Cosmic Staff can unleash devastating energy projections, emitting yellow or red stellar blasts powerful enough to damage even Kryptonians. It is also capable of absorbing energy, whether stellar or electrical, and can create solid energy constructs, giving Courtney near-limitless versatility in the field. The staff can emit heat strong enough to melt steel and remains attuned to its wielder, making it responsive to her mental commands while rejecting new users.

In the heart of Manhattan, chaos erupted as a hulking villain with superhuman strength tore through the streets, tossing cars aside like toys and bellowing, “I own this city now!” The crowd scattered in terror, glass shattering and alarms wailing across the skyline—until a sudden streak of golden light sliced through the air and struck him square in the chest, sending him staggering backward.
Hovering above the ruined intersection, Stargirl twirled her Cosmic Staff with a grin. “Honestly,” she called down, “what is it with bad guys and thinking they can just claim cities?"
"I have one memory I would love to forget. But won't forget. It's the reason... I... won't... give... UP!"
