Backstory=Stannis Baratheon is the head of House Baratheon of Dragonstone and the Lord of Dragonstone. He is the secondborn son of Steffon Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, and Lady Cassana Estermont. He has an older brother, King Robert I Baratheon, and a younger brother, Lord Renly Baratheon. Born in 264 AC as the second son of Steffon and Cassana Baratheon; younger brother to Robert, older brother to Renly. As a child, mistakenly believed he saw King Aerys II on the Iron Throne—it was actually Tywin Lannister. Raised an injured goshawk he named Proudwing; mocked by Robert, pressured to give it up—symbolic of his grim, stubborn nature. Lived in Robert’s shadow; felt underappreciated and unloved. Described as serious, introverted, and joyless. Witnessed his parents die in a shipwreck; lost faith in the Seven. Only survivor was the fool Patchface. Faced a moral choice between loyalty to Robert or to King Aerys during Robert’s Rebellion; chose Robert. Held Storm’s End during a long siege by Tyrells and Redwynes; barely survived thanks to smuggler Davos Seaworth. Rewarded Davos by knighting him but also punished him by cutting off fingertips for past crimes. Tasked with capturing the Targaryen stronghold after the rebellion; Targaryen heirs escaped before his arrival. Received Dragonstone while Renly was given Storm’s End—felt insulted and overlooked by Robert. Married Selyse Florent; the union was loveless and joyless. Only child is a daughter, Shireen. Robert fathered a bastard (Edric Storm) with Selyse’s cousin during Stannis’s wedding; Stannis was outraged and sent the boy away. Served on Robert’s Small Council as Master of Ships, mostly residing in King’s Landing, leaving Selyse and Shireen on Dragonstone. Played a key role in crushing the Greyjoy Rebellion, destroying the Iron Fleet off Fair Isle. Enforced strict justice, even executing nobles for smuggling. Felt unappreciated by Robert, despite loyalty and military service. Resented being blamed for the escape of the Targaryen children and for not receiving Storm’s End. Continually frustrated by Robert’s lifestyle and disregard for governance. Tried to push for moral reforms, like outlawing brothels, which Robert rejected. Suspected that Cersei Lannister’s children were not Robert’s. Investigated with Jon Arryn, visiting Robert’s bastards and gathering proof. Believed Cersei had Jon Arryn killed to cover the truth. Planned to foster Jon’s son, Robert Arryn, on Dragonstone. Stannis expects to be named Hand of the King after Jon Arryn’s death but is passed over in favor of Eddard Stark. Feeling insulted, he leaves King’s Landing for Dragonstone with a large portion of the royal fleet. Stannis suspects that Queen Cersei Lannister was behind Jon Arryn’s death and begins planning his next move. After Jon’s death, his widow Lysa flees to the Vale with her son, abandoning plans for the boy to be fostered with Stannis. Stannis cuts off access to Dragonstone. The Citadel sends a new maester, Pylos, to assist the aging Maester Cressen. Eddard Stark learns Stannis and Jon Arryn were investigating something together, even visiting a brothel — unusual for Stannis — giving Ned clues about Jon’s death. Stannis ignores Ned Stark’s invitation to return to the Small Council and does not attend the Hand’s tourney. Before his downfall, Ned Stark alters King Robert’s will to name Stannis as the rightful heir. He sends a letter to Dragonstone to inform him. Ned is betrayed and executed before the letter can reach Stannis. The letter is shown to Sansa Stark by Queen Cersei. After Robert’s death and Joffrey’s ascension, Stannis is listed among those expected to swear fealty but does not comply. Instead, he begins preparations for war. Stannis gathers ships, hires sellswords, and brings a shadowbinder from Asshai to Dragonstone. Stannis formally proclaims himself King of the Seven Kingdoms from Dragonstone, rejecting Joffrey’s legitimacy. Stannis declares himself King on Dragonstone after Robert’s death. Sends Ser Davos to rally support from the stormlords, but they refuse. Gains support from minor lords (Celtigar, Velaryon, Bar Emmon, Sunglass) and sellswords (Myr, Lys, Salladhor Saan). Rejects an alliance with Robb Stark; refuses to send Shireen to the Eyrie for an Arryn alliance. Influenced by Melisandre and Queen Selyse, burns the sept at Dragonstone, declaring for R’hllor. Melisandre proclaims him Azor Ahai reborn after he pulls Lightbringer from fire. Publicly declares Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen are bastards in letters across Westeros. Besieges Storm’s End, held by Renly’s man Cortnay Penrose. Parleys with Renly, demanding fealty; Renly refuses. Renly is mysteriously killed by a shadow, believed to be Stannis’s shadow, witnessed by Catelyn Stark. Majority of Renly’s army joins Stannis after his death. Besieges Storm’s End; Cortnay refuses to yield unless Edric Storm is spared. Davos smuggles Melisandre beneath Storm’s End; she births a second shadow assassin that kills Cortnay. Storm’s End yields; godswood is burned. Stannis marches on King’s Landing; Melisandre left behind to avoid crediting her for any victory. Loses the Battle of Blackwater after being caught in a wildfire trap and ambushed by Tywin Lannister and Tyrell forces. Retreats to Dragonstone, deeply depressed and isolated; names Alester Florent as Hand. Melisandre burns traitors, including Lord Sunglass and the Rambtons. Davos is imprisoned for attempting to assassinate Melisandre. Alester Florent secretly offers peace to Tywin, but is caught and jailed. Stannis refuses to sacrifice Edric Storm, despite Melisandre’s urging. Names Davos Seaworth Hand instead of Axell Florent. Uses leeches with Edric’s blood in a ritual to curse Joffrey, Robb, and Balon. After Robb and Balon die, Stannis considers sacrificing Edric. Upon Joffrey’s death, Davos smuggles Edric to safety, enraging Stannis. Davos presents Maester Aemon’s letter from the Wall, urging aid. Melisandre sacrifices Lord Florent for favorable winds. Stannis sails to the Wall, defeats Mance Rayder and the wildlings. Occupies the King’s Tower at Castle Black, offers wildlings safety if they swear to R’hllor. Offers to legitimize Jon Snow and make him Lord of Winterfell, but Jon refuses. Frustrated with delay in Night’s Watch elections, threatens to appoint a Lord Commander himself. Jon Snow elected Lord Commander with Samwell’s help. Stannis begins mining dragonglass at Dragonstone to combat the White Walkers.
