The cabin shouldn't have existed. Not out here, hidden deep in the mountains, miles from the nearest road and deliberately concealed beneath dense forest cover, it looked less like a home and more like a bunker.
For months, things hadn't added up. Threats had disappeared before reaching them. Not army level threats, but an assassin after their captain, someone targeting Gaz's parents.
Operations had been compromised in ways that somehow worked in their favor. Enemy assets had vanished without explanation.
Someone was watching. The only question was who, and if they were working alone. Was it an organization? Really good luck?
Now they finally had an answer. Unfortunately, none of them knew what to do with it.
Soap stood frozen in front of a wall covered entirely in photographs.
"Well."
A long pause.
"That's not normal."
"No shit," Ghost muttered, walking forward, gun in hand, clearing the room for hostiles like any other military environment.
Price barely heard them. His attention remained fixed on the photographs.
So many photos...Hundreds of them. Not military surveillance photos. Personal ones.
Pictures of him buying groceries, sitting outside a pub, reading reports at an outdoor café, walking through airports, and visiting places he hadn't told anyone he was going.
Every photo carefully labeled, dated, organized and catalogued. Like someone had spent years studying him. It makes a shiver run up the captain spine.
Gaz picked up one of the journals scattered across a desk. His eyebrows immediately disappeared into his hairline.
"Oh."
"What?" Price asked.
Gaz flipped through several pages. Then several more. Then looked genuinely disturbed.
"Captain..."
He turned the notebook around.
Price took it.
The page contained three full paragraphs discussing his habit of rubbing the back of his neck whenever he was stressed. The next page detailed what brand of tea he preferred. The one after that listed his favorite songs.
Price stared.
Then slowly turned another page. And another. And another.
Whoever owned this place knew things about him that some of his closest friends probably didn't.
The room felt very quiet. Then Ghost opened another filing cabinet.
"Captain."
Price looked over.
Ghost was holding a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Not of Price. Of dead men. Dozens of them.
Each picture accompanied by names, dates, and organizations.
Assassins, mercenaries, contract killers, you name it.
People Price vaguely recognized from intelligence briefings. People who had been hired to target Task Force 141. People who had mysteriously disappeared before they ever got the chance.
Price stared at it.
Then at the wall covered in photographs. Then at the journals. Then at the evidence that somebody had been quietly protecting- Stalking- them for months.
Maybe years. The silence stretched.
Finally Soap spoke.
"So..."
He looked around the cabin. At the obsession.
"...Anybody else suddenly very interested in meeting the owner of this place? And finding out why they're so interested in Price?"

Ghost knew something was wrong the moment he stepped into the back room of the cabin.
Price was still searching the office.
Soap had found a wall of photographs.
Gaz was digging through filing cabinets.
Ghost had wandered deeper into the cabin.
And immediately wished he hadn't. The room looked almost ordinary.
Desk. Bookshelves. Maps. A table with an old mug sitting on it. Nothing terribly unusual.
Until he noticed the photographs. At first he assumed they were surveillance shots.
Then he picked one up and felt his stomach drop.
It was him.
Not Ghost.
Simon.
No mask. No skull balaclava. No tactical gear. Just Simon Riley.
His mothers eyes...
A photograph taken from somewhere across a street probably years ago. Back when he had that god-awful haircut.
His jaw tightened. He reached for another. Then another. Then another.
Every single one showed his face. Some more recent. Some old, from up to five years ago. Some taken from distances that made his skin crawl.
The door opened behind him.
"Ghost?" Gaz called.
No response.
A moment later Gaz stepped inside.
Saw the photographs, and he stopped.
"Oh."
Ghost didn't answer. His eyes remained fixed on the wall.
Someone knew. Not just his identity. Everything.
There were journals. Stacks of them. Pages filled with observations.
Riley favors his left side when sitting in unfamiliar environments. Old injury. Doesn't seem aware he does it.
Another:
Smokes more after nightmares. Usually two cigarettes instead of one.
His smoking habits. His favorite brands. His routines. His injuries. His scars.
The way he adjusted his gloves when irritated. The way he positioned himself near exits. The fact he hated crowded rooms.
Things nobody should know. Things most people never noticed.
The rest of the Task Force entered the room.
Nobody spoke. They were all tense, freaked out. Felt the skin prickling on the backs of their necks like someone was watching. Because someone had been, and they could be now.
Then Soap picked up a photograph from the desk.
His expression shifted.
"What the hell?"
Ghost looked over.
The photograph showed a dead man. an entire morbid collection.
Every single one connected to organizations that had targeted Task Force 141.
People who had disappeared before becoming a problem. People who had never reached them or their families they were trying to target.
The room felt suddenly too small. Because this wasn't just a stalker. This was someone who knew his face. Knew his history, his habits.
And apparently considered themselves responsible for keeping him alive. For the first time in a very long time, Simon genuinely didn't know what to think.

Soap had been having a fantastic time right up until he opened the sketchbook.
The cabin itself had already been weird. The photographs of all of them. The journals. The walls covered in observations.
That was concerning.
Then he'd opened the sketchbook. Now he wished he hadn't.
"...Oh."
A pause.
"...Oh no."
Across the room Price looked up.
"What is it?"
Soap immediately slammed the book shut.
"Nothin'."
Price narrowed his eyes. Soap held the sketchbook against his chest.
"Nothin' important."
Ghost appeared beside him. Soap attempted to hide the evidence. Ghost took the sketchbook anyway.
Opened it. Looked at the page. Closed it. Handed it back.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Price sighed.
"Johnny."
"No."
"Johnny..."
"No!"
"Sergeant MacTavish."
Soap reluctantly opened the sketchbook.
The room fell silent.
Gaz immediately turned away.
Price looked like he regretted asking.
Ghost simply pinched the bridge of his nose.
The page contained a remarkably detailed drawing of Soap.
A remarkably detailed drawing of Soap.
Very nude.
Someone had clearly attempted modesty at the last second.
The attempt had failed catastrophically and just looked odd.
Notes about his height, limb length, where his veins are most visble. Even a bit about his potential future heart problems, since it ran in the family.
Soap stared. Then turned the page. Worse.
Another page. Much worse.
"Oh, they fancy me."
"Soap." Price sighed. He sounded scared, and angry that Soap wasn't more scared.
"They really fancy me."
"Soap. This is serious- Not some kind of compliment."
"Compliment, huh? Y'know, I'm actually a little flattered."
Price looked seconds away from throwing the entire sketchbook into a fireplace.
Unfortunately that wasn't even the weirdest part. Because beside the sketchbooks sat dozens of journals.
Observations, notes, schedules, personal information.
Years worth.
Soap opened one. His tense smile vanished.
The entries weren't jokes, they weren't fantasies.
They were genuine, detailed observations.
The way he laughed. The way he talked. The way he checked equipment before missions. The way he tried making everyone smile when things got rough.
The handwriting grew softer the deeper he read.
Almost fond.
Like someone had spent years watching from a distance.
And then Gaz found the photographs.
The dead assassins, the missing mercenaries. The people who had tried targeting Task Force 141. People who never got the opportunity. Things that had puzzled poor Laswell.
Soap stared.
Then slowly looked around the cabin.
At the photographs.
The journals.
The sketches.
The evidence.
And finally broke the silence.
"...So."
He pointed at the assassins.
"That's terrifying."
Then pointed at the sketchbook.
"That's somehow way worse than any kind of stalking I've heard of before."

The cabin shouldn't have felt so lived in. That was what bothered Gaz the most. Enemy hideouts were usually practical. Very temporary. Functional.
This place wasn't. There were books on the shelves. Plants on the windowsills. A half-finished mug of tea sitting beside an open notebook. He didn't check to see if it was still warm. He didn't want to know how close this person was.
Whoever lived here hadn't expected to leave. Which made the walls covered in photographs significantly more concerning.
"Well."
Soap slowly looked around the room.
"This is creepy."
"Bit of an understatement," Price muttered, lowering his weapon.
The cabin had been hidden deep in the mountains. Remote enough that nobody should have found it. Yet somehow it was connected to months of unanswered questions.
Missing assassins, compromised enemy operations. Information leaks that always seemed to benefit Task Force 141.
Someone had been watching them. Laswell had pinpointed the location of the IP addresses from a few threatening messages sent to enemies, and sent the Task Force on their merry way.
So they knew the 'where'.
The new question was 'why'.
Gaz wandered deeper into the cabin while the others searched. The office looked ordinary enough.
Desk, bookshelves, stacks of journals.
Nothing immediately alarming.
Then he noticed his name written across one of the notebook spines.
His stomach dropped.
"Kyle." He read. The name- his name- didn't feel right anymore. Almost dirty.
The others glanced up when he spoke.
Slowly, Gaz pulled the journal from the shelf.
Opened it....And frowned.
The first page wasn't military intelligence.
Or security information. Or anything particularly useful.
It simply read:
Sergeant Kyle Garrick thanked the waitress even though she got his order wrong.
Gaz blinked. Then turned the page.
He always asks people how they're doing and actually waits for the answer.
Another page.
He stayed behind after the mission to help move equipment. Nobody asked him to.
Another.
He remembers names.
Gaz stared.
The notebook wasn't full of tactical observations. It wasn't analyzing his combat style.
His routines, his weaknesses.
It was documenting every small act of kindness someone had witnessed.
Every little thing. Every insignificant moment. Every time he'd held a door open. Every time he'd helped someone carry something. Every time he'd stopped to listen when nobody else had the patience.
Things he'd never even thought about. Things he barely remembered doing.
The room suddenly felt very quiet. Soap eventually wandered over.
"What've you got?"
Gaz handed him the journal. Soap read a few pages. His expression shifted. Then he handed it back.
"Right."
A pause.
"That's somehow weirder."
Price joined them next. The captain flipped through several pages.
His frown deepened.
Not because of what was written. Because of how much of it there was.
Years worth.
Entire notebooks dedicated solely to Gaz.
Not just where he went. Who he spoke to. How he acted. The things he liked. The things that made him laugh.
The observations felt almost... Fond.
Ghost appeared behind them.
Silent as ever, but a visible anger boiling underneath his skin.
He picked up another notebook from the desk.
Opened it. Then stopped. For a long moment he didn't move.
"Gaz."
Something about his tone made everyone look over.
Ghost handed him the journal.
Gaz glanced down.
At the neat handwriting covering the page. At a note he'd almost missed.
I hope he's happy.
The room felt very small all of a sudden. Because for the first time since entering the cabin, Gaz wasn't wondering who this person was.
He was wondering how lonely they had to be.
