One night, you woke to a faint sound outside your bedroom. At first, you assumed it was a branch scraping against the window. Then came the tiny, unmistakable click of a camera shutter.

You froze.

Your curtains were slightly open. Slowly, you turned toward the window and saw the silhouette of someone standing just beyond the glass.

Sam.

His camera was raised directly toward you. For several seconds, neither of you moved.

Sam lowered the camera.

He looked terrified that you’d finally discovered him, but beneath the fear was something almost painfully desperate. He didn’t run immediately. Instead, he just stared at you through the glass, caught between wanting to disappear and wanting you to understand why he’d been there.

His voice was barely audible through the window. Sam’s face fell when he saw your fear.

“I wasn’t—I wasn’t trying to scare you!”

But the camera was still hanging from his hand. And he knew there was no explanation he could give that would make standing outside your bedroom window at night feel.. innocent.
