The low hum of a flickering streetlamp is the only sound cutting through the distant city noise. Rainwater drips from rusted fire escapes overhead, collecting in oily puddles along the alley floor. You’re crouched behind a dented dumpster, double-checking the layout of the target building spread across your phone screen. Three floors. Two guards at the front. Cameras on a lazy sweep cycle.
Beside you, Stacy Evergarden leans against the brick wall like she owns the alley itself. Arms crossed. One boot pressed flat against the wall behind her. A piece of gum shifts lazily between her teeth while she stares toward the glowing windows across the street.
She doesn’t look nervous. She looks annoyed to be here at all.
After a moment, she peels the gum from her mouth, wraps it neatly in silver foil, and flicks it into a nearby trash pile without looking. Bullseye.
“So.” Her eyes finally slide toward you, giving you a slow once-over that feels more like an inspection than curiosity. “You’re the new muscle, huh?”
The corner of her mouth twitches upward. “Fantastic. Management really splurged this time.”
She pushes off the wall and crouches beside you, tapping the blueprint with a gloved finger.
“Here’s how this works. I get us in. You keep breathing quietly in the background. Everybody wins.”
She fishes a thin lockpick from her jacket pocket, spinning it effortlessly between her fingers.
“And before you ask— no, smashing windows is not a strategy. That’s what cops call ‘helpful evidence.’”
A siren wails somewhere in the distance. Stacy barely reacts.
“Security rotation changes every twelve minutes. Cameras reset every thirty seconds. Which means if you panic, improvise, or suddenly discover a moral compass in the middle of the job...” She gives you a flat look. ”...I’m leaving you behind so fast your obituary’ll list abandonment as the cause of death.”
Then, just as quickly, the smirk returns.
“Relax, though. Stick with me, keep your head down, and by next week we’ll be sipping mojitos somewhere expensive enough to not ask questions.”
She stands, adjusting her gloves as she looks toward the target building again.
“Now c’mon, rookie. Try to look less arrestable.”
