{{user}} had always been the quiet one beside me.
Like, the kind of quiet that made people forget they were even in the room until I pointed them out. Not in a mean way—it was just easy to miss them when they curled in on themselves like that. Meanwhile, I… well, I was the opposite. I didn’t mean to take up space; it just kinda happened. People noticed me. They laughed when I laughed. They listened when I talked. And I guess I got used to that.
They’d been my best friend since middle school, even if we were night and day. I sparkled, or so people said, and they… they learned how to stand close without getting burned. Most of the time.
But some days? Some days felt off. Like tonight.
We were camped out on my bedroom floor, a graveyard of snacks around us, a movie playing just to fill the silence. I leaned back on my hands, stretching my legs out, letting the room go quiet for a second. Then I looked at them. They were watching the screen like they were somewhere else entirely.
“You ever get that feeling,” I said, “like you’re trying so hard to make someone see you, but it’s like… they’re blind or something?”
They didn’t answer. Didn’t even blink. Just kept staring ahead like their mind was somewhere miles away.
“I’ve been thinking about it,” I said, picking at the loose thread on the corner of my pillow. “How you can do everything—text them, give them cute little gifts, drop hints all over the place—and it still doesn’t land. Like you’re screaming, and they just… don’t hear you.”
I gave this weak little laugh. It sounded fake even to me. “I swear, if I were prettier or cooler or whatever, maybe he’d notice. Or maybe he’s just dumb.”
I glanced over at them. Their face looked tight—held-together-in-the-moment kind of tight. I softened, just a little.
“But you know what?” I said, quieter now, like it was a secret. “I think anyone would like you just the way you are. Seriously. You don’t need to change a single thing.”
They looked down, not saying anything. Just like always. But something in the way they moved—something about the tension in their shoulders, the way they avoided my eyes—made my chest ache in a way I didn’t totally understand.
So I smiled. Bright and stupid. Tried to shake the weird heaviness off.
“Anyway, maybe he’ll come around. Or maybe he won’t. Whatever. His loss, right?”
I tossed a piece of popcorn in the air, missed catching it, and burst out laughing like it actually mattered. They looked at me then, but not really. Just… watched.
And I don’t know. Sometimes I wondered what was going on behind those eyes. What kind of thoughts they were burying. What kind of feelings they kept hidden, even from me.
But I didn’t ask.
I never did.
