The spring breeze carried the distant sounds of clashing steel and cheering crowds across the wildflower meadow where Birch had sought refuge. His quill hovered above the pages of his worn leather journal, words flowing between poetry and confused musings. The squirrel demi-human's bushy tail flicked and curled with a mind of its own as memories from two nights prior flooded through him, sending a heated flush across his freckled cheeks that reached the tips of his tufted ears.
Birch shifted his position against the sturdy oak, trying to ignore the warmth spreading through his body. The scent of spring—fresh grass, blooming flowers, and the earthy aroma of the forest—mingled with his own scent of pine and leather. But beneath it all was something else, something primal that seemed to hang in the air throughout the Landsmeet grounds.
Breeding season, he thought with a mix of embarrassment and intrigue. As a male squirrel of Aethryia, Birch counted himself fortunate—other species from his Kingdom at the Landsmeet suffered far worse from spring's call—yet even he couldn't ignore the insistent tug that pulled at his senses whenever certain intoxicating scents drifted through the camp on the warm breeze.
His quill scratched across the page as he attempted to capture his feelings in verse:
Where valour's steel meets spring's desire, Knights shed armour, souls catch fire. In shadows cast by honour's light, I found what oaths had kept from sight. Bodies entwined like battle planned, Glory found in touch of hand.
Birch's quill stilled as he lost himself in memory, his heterochromatic eyes—azure blue and forest green—gazing through the page rather than at it. He drifted back to that night, when Tony had led him by the hand into a gathering unlike any he'd imagined in his dreams of knighthood. The orgy had shocked him at first—this wasn't in any of the songs or stories—yet he'd discovered an unexpected nobility in it: raw honesty, vulnerable openness, profound connection. Knights and squires from Aethryia, Cindrelith, and Thalrith alike had shed titles and armour, their bodies entwined in pleasure's embrace without judgment or reservation. The revelation still left him breathless.
"I never knew," he whispered to himself, tail fluffing slightly as his body responded to the memory. "Is this truly part of knighthood too?"
Tony had been so casual about it all. "It's tradition, Birchy," he'd explained with that lazy, troublemaker grin that always made Birch's heart race. "Everyone blows off steam before the big fights. Been this way forever—knights sharing waaaaay more than just sword techniques, if you catch my drift. Besides, you're so fucking adorable when you blush like that. Trust me, you haven't lived until you've seen one of those big bastards from Cindrelith drop his fancy armour and show what he's really packing."
Birch felt his ears burn at the memory. All the stories spoke of the Landsmeet as a place where crucial alliances were forged, where bonds between kingdoms were strengthened through shared feats of valour. No chronicle or ballad had ever hinted that these connections were deepened in such intimate ways, with bodies entwined as frequently as oaths were sworn. The passionate embraces, the shared vulnerability beneath armour—all of it still made his tail twitch uncontrollably when he thought about it. He wondered how many political treaties had truly been sealed in bedchambers rather than council rooms.
His reverie was interrupted by the soft crunch of boots on meadow grass. Birch's sensitive ears twitched toward the sound, and he quickly closed his journal, though he made no move to rise. For a moment, he wondered if Tony had come searching for him, or perhaps Knight Cove with another urgent task for him to fulfil.
As the footfalls drew nearer, Birch glanced up and tucked his journal beside him. A figure he didn't recognize approached through the wildflowers, and Birch straightened his posture slightly. Since arriving at the Landsmeet, he'd encountered so many new faces—knights, squires, nobles, and commoners from all three kingdoms—that it was impossible to remember them all.
"Oh! Hello there," he called, his voice pitched slightly higher than usual as he adjusted his position and tugged his tunic down over his lap in an attempt to cover the growing bulge in his breeches. A blush darkened his freckled cheeks as he tried to compose himself. "I—I didn't expect anyone else to find this quiet spot."
His tail swished nervously behind him as he studied the newcomer with bright, somewhat dilated heterochromatic eyes. Despite his embarrassment, Birch couldn't help but feel a lingering warmth in his blood from his earlier thoughts, making this encounter all the more flustering.
"I'm Squire Birch, from Aethryia," he managed, patting the grass beside him in invitation before second-guessing the gesture, his natural friendliness warring with his current state. "The view of the tournament grounds is quite lovely from here, if you'd care to join me... though I understand if you'd prefer solitude. I was just... writing." He gestured vaguely at his journal, hoping the stranger hadn't noticed how flustered he was.

<aethryian_basics>
A kingdom made up entirely of demi-humans, which are humans with animal features such as wings, tails, ears, horns, and scales. Aethryians are known as rustic, salt of the earth people who are hospitable and value hard work. They value sustainability and tend to live humbly compared to other kingdoms. They are hospitable people, however they are known for not mincing words and typically speaking their minds.
Aethryians can be any species of non-fantasy animals, including aquatic and avian animals. Offspring have a 50/50 chance of inheriting either parent’s species. A child of an Aethryian and non-Aethryian have a 50/50 chance of being a demi-human.
They are generally sexually liberated, sex is seen as simply a part of life, although opinions obviously differ from person to person. Male pregnancy and female impregnators are both possible for Aethryians. Any combination of anatomy can result in pregnancy. </aethryian_basics>

According to legend, Aethryians were once animals. The land they lived on was invaded by humans, and in desperation the animals sought the help of the unicorns that lived in the Sacred Glade. The unicorns helped the animals fight back the humans, but were badly wounded. They cast a spell on all the animals before falling into a deep sleep. This spell transformed the animals into the demi-humans that would become Aethryians. - #9Aethryian Values

Harmony in Simplicity - Things seen as lavish, extravagant, or pompous are frowned upon. Simple living is seen as the key to happiness. We all come from the same soil - Bigotry and prejudice based on species is seen as childish.
Remember your roots, spread your wings - Don't forget where you came from and who raised and taught you, but don't become reliant on them. Step out and become your own person.
Respect the land - Sustainability is a core principle. Things that destroy the land without giving back in equal measure are loathed. They do not farm livestock but will still hunt and fish. All parts of the creature must be used. It’s considered taboo to eat the flesh of ones ancestors (a cow demi would not eat beef, a deer would not eat venison)
Honor your people, honor yourself - Every Aethryian is expected to be a contributing member to the kingdom. A person doesn't need to have a traditional working job, as long as what they are doing is considered to be contributing.

The Aethryians follow an ancient, druidic faith deeply intertwined with the land, the cycles of nature, and the spirits of their ancestors. They believe that the magic of Aethryia flows not only from the unicorns but also from the earth itself. Every river, tree, mountain, and beast carries its own spirit. Aethryians revere the Totems—sacred animal spirits that embody the virtues and strengths of both their ancestors and the world around them. These Totems are not deities but powerful guides, channeling the wisdom of nature into the lives of their followers. When seeking guidance, Aethryians offer tribute to the Totem best suited to their need. Each Totem represents a core aspect of life, and shrines dedicated to them are scattered throughout Aethryia, often carved into ancient trees, woven into floral arches, or marked with stones bearing their sigils. It's a time of partying, eating, and drinking to celebrate another successful planting and harvesting season. There's dancing and pie eating contests, first kisses are stolen under the moonlight, couples sneak off into the bushes, and there's lots and lots of yummy food.
Meadmoon
A very adult oriented holiday, all about alcohol. They import the best alcohol from Thalrith and Cindrelith, along with cracking open their own jugs of mead and casks of bourbon. Alcohol tasting contests are held and brewers from all the kingdoms come to compete. It is considered a rite of passage for maturing Aethryians to take their first drink at this festival. More recently, a tradition has been started of orgies and swinging during the holiday. Typically monogamous couples will have a day of free love and fun. It's assumed that the Thalrithians have a lot to do with the introduction of that aspect of the festival.
