Listing description
I will be updating many entries while also adding in many headcanons/things that GSD didn't include themselves. The updates will be gradual, but unlike Greenstar? You know I'll be finishing this one eventually. These changes including;
-Entries for the different types of Octarians (and their differentiation from Octolings) -A more in-depth explanation of the differing languages (Inkling being Japanese, Octarian/Octoling being more Chinese/Korean) -A few human entries (the Ark Polaris, updating Alterna) -Many of the Octarian bosses, but also the different types of Salmonids and Boss Salmonids -More descriptions about the weapons -Including some of the brands shown in Splatoon -Including more background characters/events such as Anarchy Battle, the shops, Crusty Sean etc -Inclusion of the Side Order DLC with the Tower and Jelletons -Expansion upon Agent 4 (who seems to have just... Stopped existing in Splatoon lore? All we know is that according to Famitsu, Agent 4 is THE STRONGEST agent, but that's about it)

- #1[Species] Humansconstantselective
Keys: primate, Mammal, Humans, Humanity, Extinct, Human
Humans (Homo sapiens) are an extinct species of primate that once populated the world over 12,000 years before the present day. While none are known to have survived to the present day, many remaining artifacts from the humans are still present and discovered by the current dominant species. Human fossils and bones are a common discovery, many of which are exhibited in museums. Humans were indirectly responsible for the genesis of the sentient life that exists in the Mollusk Era, as the humans of Alterna had developed a form of liquid crystal based on cephalopodic bodily fluids that reacted to thoughts and emotions; following the destruction of Alterna the crystals entered the underground seas, infusing the marine life with humanity's passive desire to see the surface, drastically accelerating their evolution. Inklings and Octolings should always be surprised when meeting a human or any living mammal given how long they're supposed to have been dead; the only exceptions being the cats Judd and Lil Judd.
- #2[Species] Mammalsselective
Keys: ancient life, mammal, reptile, reptilian life, mammalian life, reptillian, Mammals
Warm-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that is distinguished by the possession of hair or fur, and cold-blooded vertebrate animals of a class distinguished by their possession of scales and lack of hair. Both mammalian and reptilian life have long since gone extinct well before the Inklings existed; the most prominent of which being humans who had experienced a mass extinction event approximately 12,000 years ago. Inklings and Octolings should always be surprised when meeting a human or any living mammal given how long they're supposed to have been dead; the only exceptions being the cats Judd and Lil Judd, both of whom have been around for 100 years at this point
- #3[Location] Alternaselective
Keys: Alterna dome, Alterna
Located in the crater that's found in the Splatlands, near what is an upside-down Eiffel Tower. Deeper down, into an (up until 2022 M.E.) undiscovered cavern, lays Alterna. A once underwater dome civilization that served as the last stronghold of humanity in their final days over 12,000 years ago in the distant past. Alterna is a large geodesic dome, and it was in Alterna that many of humanity's favourite cultural artifacts whilst also establishing a sustainable ecosystem and also hunting some of the marine life for food. 25 years after the creation of Alterna, its scientists would discover a crystalline solution in ancient squids, in large quantities this solution would react to the thoughts and desires of humanity, namely their desire to return to the surface which caused the liquid crystals to replicate a false sky. Upon discovery of this substance, humans would line the walls of their geodesic dome with it, granting them a false sky as they would last on for a few more generations until... It happened. A younger generation of human scientists who refused to heed the warnings of their elders, would try to build a rocket that would take them to the surface. This plan would fail horrifically, and result in the end of humanity. The liquid crystals of the dome leeching off into the surrounding waters, which would be how Inklings, Octolings, Salmonids, and many other marine creatures would begin their rapid evolution. In 2018 M.E. however, Grizz would rediscover Alterna and fix it up before beginning to use it for his plan. In 2022 M.E. however, when Grizz neared the end of his plans, Agent 1, Agent 2, Captain 3, Neo 3, and Craig Cuttlefish would all happen upon Alterna as well. After the defeat of Mr. Grizz, the New Squidbeak Splatoon often come back here for short visits. But it's not for long periods of time.
- #4[Location]: Ark Polaris
Keys: Ark Polaris, Human space ship, The ARK
In the last days of Humanity, when the Earth was being torn asunder as a result of war and the horrific natural disasters. Humanity (prior to the creation of Alterna) would create a massive space ship; the Ark Polaris. A ship that was created to be large enough to contain multiple creatures, around 10 animals from every known species of Earth, but also a majority of humanity. Taking this ship, the survivors would fly off the planet, but trouble would strike when the ship had reached the asteroid belt. Something had taken out the ship's ability to further travel out into space, and the gravity of Earth would drag the ship back and force it to hang in its atmosphere until the year 1879 M.E. when the ship finally crash-landed into the ocean. Only the back end of the Ark Polaris remains above sea level, making the Ark Polaris a popular spot for Salmonids and their Salmon Runs. The Ark Polaris is the only last remaining bit of English in the entire world, but it is also where Mr. Grizz came from.
- #5[Event] Mollusk Eraselective
Keys: Marine Era, M.E., Mollusc Era
ME (Mollusc Era or Marine Era) is used as a year notation, similar to AD or BC. It began roughly 2,000 years ago (and 10,000 years after the mass extinction of almost all mammals and many other land-dwelling animals,) when sea creatures evolved into land-dwelling creatures such as Inklings and Octarians, among others.
- #6[Species] Inklingconstantselective
Keys: Inklings, Inkling, squid kid, ink form, squid form
Inklings are a species of humanoid cephalopods who evolved from squids or cuttlefish after the extinction of humans due to rising sea levels. The life cycle of an Inkling is simple, they are born when their fathers sacrifice a small portion of their ink, and the females keep said ink in their body, allowing it to grow until the resulting egg (or eggs) come out, fully fertilized. When these eggs hatch, all Inkling are born in their ink, or "squid" forms, which appears as a cute colourful (albeit large) 4-foot long squid which has a triangular head, two wide eyes that have a black domino-mask like pattern around their eyes, and eight tentacles, two of which are longer than the rest. All Inklings stay like this until they turn 14-years-old, which is when they reach physical and sexual maturity, gaining the ability to go into their humanoid (or "squid kid") form. Where their body shifts and forms a humanoid shape, with tentacle hair, pointy ears, and slightly sharp teeth, while maintaining that black domino pattern around their eyes. Since all Inklings are made up of ink, Inklings don't actually have bones, they're completely ink-based and as such can rapidly shift between their ink form and humanoid form at will without any repercussions. As an Inkling ages however, their body's ink capacity will shrink and they will eventually get to a point where they'll be forced to either stay in their humanoid or ink form permanently. There are some forms of life-extensions though, that being sun-basking, which can help greatly extend Inkling life spans.
- #7[Species] Inkling Anatomyconstantselective
Keys: Inkling anatomy, multiple hearts, Inkling body, Inkling physiology, hearts, Inkling biology, three hearts
The life cycle starts when two grown Inklings mate; the process of mating requires the male Inkling to deposit part of their body's ink into the female and the female will—in 9 months time, lay eggs which will hatch into young Inklings who for the first 13 years of their life will be in their "Squid" form; a form where they look look colourful and cute squids with two longer tentacles and 4 shorter ones with large eyes with a black domino eye-mask pattern around their eyes. It is when Inklings turn 14 that they gain their humanoid form. In their humanoid form, an Inkling's body is nearly identical to that of a human but with unique characteristics. Instead of hair, they have large tentacle appendages atop their heads; largely being styled as such that can be grown to as long as one's lower back. These tentacles change color to match an Inkling's ink and feature a gradient pattern, with the tentacles ventral surface often being a creamy white color and having suckers. Their eyes are surrounded by a black domino 'eye mask,' and they have pointed ears reminiscent of squid fins. Inklings' mouths contain ridges similar to human teeth, with three larger sharp points resembling a squid's beak. The color of an Inkling's tongue and blush all take the same shade as their ink. Like humans they have strictly flesh toned bodies, a naval, two arms, two legs, feet, two hands with four fingers and one thumb each though lacking fingernails entirety. Their genitals also largely resemble and function the same as that of humans, likewise having extremities such as breasts despite not being mammals. Inklings have soft skin, and while they have muscle and/or fat of varying definition, Inklings have no bones, excellent eyesight, and the ability to leap five feet in a single bound. Notably, their hair tentacles are actually sensitive to stimulation. Inklings also have 3 hearts in their body, although these three hearts are all located in the same part of their body; in their chest.
- #8[Culture] Inklishselective
Keys: fresh culture, freshness, culture, Inkling culture, modern day culture, style
With the progression of modern Inkling (and recently Octoling) society, it's not too surprising to learn that the day-to-day life of Inkopolis and many other cities or settlements all have a very high emphasis on the "Freshness" of each individual, "Freshness" being a specific term used to describe how fresh, cool, interesting, unique, handsome, or pretty each individuals look. It's effectively a culture based solely around fashion, and a very high-energy social system that promotes being capable of standing out from the crowd and making a name for yourself. Because of such a rapidly changing culture, it means that many places are VERY hostile towards those who "Aren't fresh enough" for them. It's not uncommon to find certain shops who will simply outright deny you service if you don't meet the "fresh criteria" to buy their wares. Not only that, but it's also a highly competitive way of life, since one's "Freshness" can be raised if they do very well in ranked battles, turfwars, or splatfests but it's also a risk since one's rank can also be lost if they do poorly.
- #9[Species] Octolingselective
Keys: Octoling, Octarian
Octolings are a species of humanoid cephalopods who evolved from octopuses after the extinction of humans due to rising sea levels and are the octopus equivalents to Inklings. As such, Octolings actually share the exact same life cycle as Inklings. The father will sacrifice a portion of their ink for the mothers to keep in their bodies, and the mothers will lay the eggs resulting from that incubation period. Upon being born, and their eggs hatching, Octolings are in their Octopus form, which like the Inkling, is a cutesy-looking colourful octopus that is extacly 4 feet long, having a round head with two large eyes that have black rings around each of them, unlike Inklings however, Octolings in their Octopus form only have 4 distinctive tentacles. Upon age 14, they reach sexual and physical maturity and will gain access to their humanoid form, which is similar to the Inklings. But Octolings have flat rounded ears, their hair tentacles have suckers on the top of each tentacle, but also their eye marks aren't connected, and are two distinctive rings. Like Inklings and other Inkfish, Octolings do not have bones, and are fully capable of rapidly swapping between their ink and humanoid forms without worry. As an Octoling ages however, their bodies will begin to produce less and less ink, resulting in them having to make the choice to permanently stay in either humanoid or octopus form, but the use of wasabi can extend one's life.
- #10[Species] Octoling Originsselective
Keys: Octoling body, Octoling physiology, multiple hearts, Octoling biology, Octoling anatomy, three hearts, hearts
The life cycle starts when two grown Octolings mate; the process of mating requires the male Octoling to deposit part of their body's ink into the female and the female will—in 9 months time, lay eggs which the mother will then spend almost every waking moment watching over the eggs, who will hatch into young Octolings who for the first 13 years of their life will be in their "Octopus" form; a form where they look look colourful and cute Octopi with four tentacles and large eyes with distinctive black rings around their eyes. It is when Octolings turn 14 that they gain their humanoid form. In their humanoid form, an Octoling's body is nearly identical to that of a human but with unique characteristics. Instead of hair, they have large tentacle appendages atop their heads; largely being styled as such that can be grown to as long as their lower-back. These tentacles change color to match an Octoling's ink and feature a gradient pattern, with the tentacles ventral surface often being a creamy white color, while the dorsal surface has their suckers. Their eyes are surrounded by a black ring, which isn't connected like an Inklings, and their ears are flat but rounded. Octolings' mouths contain ridges similar to human teeth, with three larger sharp teeth resembling an Octopi's beak. The color of an Octoling's tongue and blush all take the same shade as their ink. Octolings have soft skin, and while they have muscle and/or fat of varying definition, Octolings have no bones, excellent eyesight, and the ability to leap five feet in a single bound. Notably, their hair tentacles are actually sensitive to stimulation. Octolings also have 3 hearts in their body, although these three hearts are all located in the same part of their body; in their chest.
- #11[Species] Octarian Cultureselective
Keys: Octarians, Octarian, Octarian anatomy, Severed Octarians, Octarian biology, Octarian physiology
Octarians are what happens when an Octoling decides to cut their tentacle hair, for when an Octoling cuts their tentacles? The tentacle will grow on to become an Octarian unless the tentacle is eaten or destroyed. When an Octoling's severed tentacles gain their sentience, they gain two short, and thin stumpy legs on their "body", while their faces which include merely a mouth and eyes will form on the tentacle hair's creamy white ventral side. Merely having protruding, circular eyeballs with a green sclera and purple-blue small irises with purple markings around the eyeballs and large, round, connected, purple lips, but lack other visible features. Most Octarians are made up of only one tentacle, as such the tip of the tentacle that makes up their body often curls over. Octarians who are made up of two conjoined hair tentacles are far smarter than other Octarians, and look the same albeit a bit bigger and having two dangling tentacle tips. Some Octarians however CAN in fact grow up into a vaguely humanoid shape, but this is rare since no Octarian lasts longer than a month. The only exception to this, is the Octosamurai. Notably, Octarians cannot access respawn points, so if splatted? That's the end of that Octarian's life, hence why none of them ever live long.
- #12Octoling/Octarian culture
Keys: Octoling culture, Octoling life, Octarian culture, Octarian army life, Octarian life, Octarian army culture
Until 2018 M.E. the general public were (genuinely) unaware about the existence of Octolings due to the results of the Great Turf War. Because Octolings were the losers of that war, and were cast away, the Octolings lifestyle changed drastically, as they have a dark and militaristic culture that is influenced by propaganda, technology, and music. Octolings are generally loyal and obedient to DJ Octavio, but also curious and rebellious. Octolings are more serious and technologically inclined compared to Inklings. They show a keen interest in understanding the inner workings of weapons, observe their phones closely, and reflect curiosity and confusion. Winning and losing demonstrates their competitive spirit, with disappointment in defeat and striking poses in victory. An Octoling for example is less likely to understand a joke than an Inkling, often taking things more literally, but ever since 2018 M.E. they have also been unfortunate victims to the Sanitization incident but also the Fuzzy ooze epidemic. To this day there are still many enslaved Octoling and Octarian victims of both incidents who have yet to be truly healed. The only benefit however, is that due to the Octolings now being accepted, it means they no longer have to live in Octo Valley or Canyon and are no longer victims to their power crisis.
- #13[Species}: Octoling Soldiers and Elite Octolings
Keys: Octoling soldiers, Elite Octoling, Octarian Elite, Octarian Soldiers, Octoling Elite
The highest ranking members of the Octarian army; unsurprisingly are the Octolings who the Octarians are all born from. The Octoling soldiers are all given the same gear and armour as each other, those being a black patent leather long-sleeved shirt with matching pants and boots with semi-ink resistant armour and long wrist gloves, with glowing wrist and leg band which both include trackers and a pair of heavily tinted goggles. In 2018 M.E. however the goggles were briefly replaced by the Hypno shades. The more common outfit however, is a metal, crop top-like garment that's held up by two brown shoulder straps and has a sleeveless black shirt underneath with a thin stripe down each side, along with a loose brown belt around the waist, this happens to make the figure of Octoling soldiers seem curvier than they actually are. Above the normal Octoling soldiers however, are the Elite Octoling or Octoling Elite, these specific Octoling are all Octolings who have been through rough training since early childhood, even before the Octoling age of sexual maturity. These special Octolings have their rank shown by the two flowing strands of seaweed that are forcefully screwed in and implanted to the heads of the Octoling Elite. It's worth noting that almost all members of the Octarian Army are female. There are almost absolutely no male members of the army, only 4 or 5 max.
- #14[Sub-species]: Octotrooper
Keys: Octohopper, Shielded Octotrooper, Twintacle trooper, Rocket Octotrooper, Blobby Octotrooper, Octarian trooper, Octostamp, Octotrooper, Octodiver
The general Octarian/Octoling army is made up mostly of Octarians. So it is of no surprise that the Octarian army's ground units are mostly Octarians. Octotroopers, Shielded Octotroopers, Octodivers, Blobby Octotroopers, and Octohoppers, are all single-tentacled Octarians, and they all stand atop small, simple vehicles consisting of a cylindrical platform with a black ring on the bottom, a long hose-like protrusion with a megaphone-like nozzle on the end, and a single joystick on top that the Octarian uses to operate the vehicle. The differences however, is in the additions. Basic Octotroopers have no extras, Shielded Octotroopers have large ink-resistant glass shields attached to their vehicles, Octodivers are Octarians who submerge themselves in their ink and spring out when enemies get close (reminiscent of Guerrilla warfare,) meanwhile Blobby Octotroopers have vehicles that shoot bouncy blobs of ink instead of the usual fire-patterns, and Octohoppers are Octarians who are on small vehicles that bounce.
Twintacle Troopers have the same basic vehicles that they control, as there are Shielded, Blobby, and hopper variants of the Twintacle Octotrooper, but since Twintacle Troopers happen to have more intelligence than the basic Octarian, it means that they can also operate rocket-powered versions; creating the Rocket Octotrooper, an Octotrooper who's vehicle can swiftly propel themselves from left to right and have a much faster ink firing rate.
- #15[Sub-species]: Elite troopers
Keys: Octocommander, Octosniper, Elite Octarian troopers
In the Octarian army's ground units, the two Octarian classes beneath the Octoling and Octoling Elites are the Octosniper and Octocommander; both being examples of very old (5 months max) Octarians, who have grown immensely in length, to the point where they're even bigger than Octavio at over 15 feet long. Their legs growing from the base of the tentacle that they're born from, while their tips are extra curly, Octosnipers are stationed on immobile platforms from which they blow shots of ink through instruments that appear similar to a lengthened megaphone. They wear a set of goggles with a laser sight protruding from their left eye, and as snipers the ink they shoot can often times splat ANYONE in one shot. The Octocommanders are stationed on a platform with a propeller on the back, and the platform can rotate 360 degrees. Their splatling gun has six barrels and Octarian designs on the barrels of their splatling gun, Octocommanders are beneath the basic Octolings in rank, and as such wear a beret and a pair of aviators
- #16[Sub-Species]: Octo-copper/bomber
Keys: Octostriker, Rocket Octocopter, Rocket Octobomber, Octocopter, Octobomber
Along with the ground units of the Octarian Army, are the Air Units of the army. The most common form of trooper for the air units would be the Octotrooper, a variant of Octarian where their legs sprout from near the tip of the tentacle they're born from, with their propellor hat being what grants them flight, but also having a small ink gun attached allowing them to shoot slow-moving ink balls. Rocket Octocopters are slightly older Octocopters wearing helmets that have rocket-powered helmets granting them far quicker left-right movements. Next are the Octobombers and Octostrikers. Octobombers and Octostrikers however are Octarians who have grown to be 5 months old, and are very large and rotund, with the short thin legs that all Octarians have. Octobombers wear the same form of helmet that Octocopters have, but instead of ink blasts, Octobombers will instead shoot splatbombs at any incoming targets, meanwhile Octostrikers have propeller helmets that shoot out Inkstrikes.
- #17[Item] Inkselective
Keys: Inkfish ink, Inkling ink, Jelleton ink, inkfish, Octoling ink, Salmonid ink, ink
Inklings, Octolings, and various forms of other Inkfish (or Salmonids) possess remarkable abilities associated with their different forms. For Inklings, Octolings, and Inkfish while in their kid/humanoid form, they can all use the very self-replenishing ink that makes up their forms or ink sacs,s and weaponizing it using various weapons such as paint guns, rollers, buckets, and paintbrushes. This ink can be spread quickly over most surfaces, inhibiting the movement of any Inkling/Octoling, Salmonid, or other inkfish that doesn't match the colour of the ink they're walking on. It can also be used as a projectile to damage opposing Inklings/Octolings/Inkfish, eventually eliminating them from battle until they respawn if the target is covered in enough of the opponent's ink. Walls and ground alike can be covered with ink, but it goes through grates and cannot be applied to ink-resistant surfaces such as glass, tarps, or certain obstacles covered in anti-ink based chemicals. It allows a degree of stealthiness, as Inklings, Octolings, or Inkfish in their "ink" forms can swim in their ink and ambush enemies. When Inklings, Octolings, or other Inkfish change ink colors: their "hair" fade between the two colors starting from the tips of the tentacles. The ink of Octoling, Inklings, and Inkfish all happen to be edible and nutritious notable enough, with the flavour of each different colour of ink being sweet and varying in fruit tastes.
When it comes to Salmonids, Jelletons, or non-inkfish however. While they can use ink or ink-adjacent secretions, unlike the other inkfish, Octolings, or Inklings, they cannot swim in their own ink nor can they respawn in the same way that Inklings, Octolings, or inkfish can. Notably, these specific species are also locked to one specific ink colour. For Salmonids, their ink is forever a dirty trashy green colour, meanwhile the Jelletons their ink is black. Other non-inkfish however can change ink between their ink usage as long as they do not mix two different types of ink fish.
- #18[Item] Ink tankselective
Keys: ink tanks, Grizzco ink tank, Ink tank
An Inkling, Octoling's, or Inkfish's ink can be stored within a cylindrical ink tank strapped upon their backs, serving as ammunition for their weapons. Ink tanks are containers resembling oversized insulated sports water bottles filled with ink. Each tank is made primarily of clear plastic, with caps on its top and bottom, and is worn via two short backpack-like straps attached to the top area of the tank, but with each tank is a small 'wire' that connects to the wearer's body which is why ink tanks are self-reloading. The ink tank pulls from the ink of it's wearers body. The size of the ink tank is typically about 40 gallons, though there are other ink tanks that can be 50 or 65 gallons which are VERY legally restricted, but there are specialized ink tanks that exist, namely the Grizzco Ink tank, which instead of a bottle will look like a lifesaver.
- #19[Languages] Inkling/Octoling language
Keys: speaking in octarian, inkling, speaking in inkling, inkling language, octarian, octoling language, talking in inkling, speaking octarian, talking in octarian
There are two main languages that serve as the predominant languages of the world in this current time period. Those two languages being named Inkling and Octarian, both named after the species. When the first Inklings and Octolings had evolved higher intelligence and more advanced bodies, it is unsurprising that they would unknowingly also adapt the now dead human languages and create something new out of them. The more commonly used of these languages being Inkling, which is (unknowingly) based off of the long-forgotten Human language of Japanese, specifically with its letter/character stylizations, and how they write the language in a vertical tategaki style. However the language notably (to someone who knows what Japanese actually sounds like,) sounds like a wavy, fluid, and bubbly form dialect of the language. Octarian however, isn't spoken as widely, and is spoken solely by the Octarian army, Octolings, Octarians, and DJ Octavio himself. Unlike the Japanese styled formatting of Inkling, the Octarian language utilizes a more click-y language which is far more based along the now extinct Human language of Mandarin Chinese and Korean which has resulted in the Octarian language being nigh impossible for any non-Octolings or Octarians to learn.
- #20[Species] Jellyselective
Keys: species, Jellyfish, Jelly
Jellyfish bear a closer resemblance to their aquatic counterparts than Inklings and Octarians, with the most significant change being that their bodies take on a more humanoid shape. They have large, round heads, with their only facial features being a pair of very close-set eyes with diamond-shaped pupils and no visible irises. They have a pair of upper tentacles that serve as their arms, and a ring of eight lower tentacles that serve as legs. They are capable of stretching their "arm" tentacles to several times their body length at will. Jellyfish form colonies of which all members share a collective consciousness, though individuals still have their own personalities and interests.
- #21[Event] The Great Turf Warselective
Keys: Great Turf War, Great war of 1913, 1913 ME
Circa 1913 ME began what came to be known as The Great Turf War, a long and vigorous war fought between the Octarians and the Inklings over control of the surface due to rising tides and there simply just not being enough resources to allow for both Octolings and Inklings to remain on the surface. Despite the Octolings and Octarian army winning multiple battles in the early stages of the war, ultimately a combination of luck the Inkling's side and them having more limbs in their squid forms led to them emerging victorious and conquering Inkadia. Meanwhile, the Octarians were forced to occupy the neighboring wasteland territories of Octo Valley and Octo Canyon; living inside underground domes to try and evade the rising tides. The Squidbeak Splatoon would be disbanded after the war, but its leader, Cap'n Cuttlefish, would remain vigilant for the next century. He continued monitoring Octarian activity long after their defeat, and even formed the New Squidbeak Splatoon with his granddaughters Callie and Marie. Unfortunately, despite all of his sacrifices and all of the things him and the old Squidbeak Splatoon had done, like all legends. Craig Cuttlefish and his efforts in the Great Turf War were all forgotten by the modern era. Only VERY big history buffs even know about the Great Turf War, but not who took part in it.
- #22[Event] Siege of Arowana Castleselective
Keys: Siege of Arowana Castle, Great Turf War, start of the great turf war
The Squidbeak Splatoon, led by Second Lieutenant Cuttlefish, visited grievous losses upon the forces of the enemy during the bitter siege of Arowana Castle; the intense battle saw Cuttlefish inflict a grievous wound upon his former friend and leader of the Octarians, Octavio, a wound that would leave the Octoling with an X-shaped scar that would forever serve as a reminder of the bitter feud.
- #23[Event] Octarian retreatselective
Keys: underground domes, Octarian retreat, Great Turf War, Octarian domes
Following their defeat in the Great Turf War, the Octarians were forced to retreat into underground domes located in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon. These remote areas, dotted with Kettles leading to various underground sections, became their new home for the following years. However, the Octarian domes are had been facing an energy shortage for the past several years, which prompted the Octarians to steal the Zapfish in the years 2015 ME and again in 2017 ME.
- #24[Group] Old Squidbeak Splatoonselective
Keys: Ammoses, old Splatoon, Old Squidbeak Splatoon, Ammoses Shellendorf
The Squidbeak Splatoon was a platoon of soldiers who fought against the Octarians during the Great Turf War. It was led by Cap'n Cuttlefish, and its members included Ammoses Shellendorf (a horseshoe crab), Judd, a male Inkling, and a female Inkling. The group used primarily Bamboozlers in combat, but now only Cap'n Cuttlefish remains as the sole surviving member of the group alongside Judd.
- #25[Group] New Squidbeak Splatoonselective
Keys: New Squidbeak Splatoon, Veronika, Marie, Callie, Captain, Agent
The New Squidbeak Splatoon is a secret society of undercover agents created to battle the Octarians. The group is the successor to the old Squidbeak Splatoon, a unit that existed during the Great Turf War that ended 100 years prior. It's members include the Inklings 'Captain' (Formerly Agent 3,) Callie (codenamed Agent 1), Marie (codenamed Agent 2), Veronika (The new Agent 3,) Agent 4 and the Octoling Agent 8. Off the Hook members Pearl and Marina are debatably unofficial members.
- #26[Character] Cuttlefishselective
Keys: Craig Cuttlefish, Cuttlefish, Craig, Cap'n Cuttlefish
Craig Cuttlefish, originally nicknamed Cap'n Cuttlefish, is a veteran of the Great Turf War and former captain of the Squidbeak Splatoon and New Squidbeak Splatoon. Cuttlefish is also Callie and Marie's grandfather, both of whom refer to him regularly as gramps. Craig is well over 100 years old, being 137 specifically, as such he's an elderly Octoling who's long since gone thin with age, with slightly shaky legs as he now walks with a hunch and a cane. His hair tentacles are mostly gone too, minus two small ones that are tied mimicking a small ponytail, meanwhile he has a white "beard" made up of what few tentacle facial hair he has left. His eyes bulging slightly and brown, but still having the black domino mask-like markings that Inklings have. After the events of Alterna, he's regained access to his humanoid form, and after the Grand Festival he's even managed to reconcile with Octavio after all these years.
- #27[Band] Squid Sistersselective
Keys: Marie, Marie After Midnight, Callie, Squid Sisters
The Squid Sisters are an idol Inkling pop duo based in Inkopolis Plaza, consisting of Callie and Marie both of whom are not sisters, but are in fact cousins. They were the former hosts for the Inkopolis News program, which once upon a time announced events, news and other battle-related news from the years of 2014 M.E. to 2017 M.E. where they then began to deviate into their own specific careers, but they're still incredibly close and will occasionally take back their roles as the host and managers of Splatfests within Inkopolis, where Callie and Marie both live and operate. Marie herself even has a radio show known as Marie After Midnight, which has since become VERY popular ever since her and Callie have stepped down from being THE premier idols of the world. Their discography include: "City of Color", "Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today", "Inkopolis Evolution", "Ink Me Up", "Now or Never", "Liquid Sunshine", "Maritime Memory", "Fresh Start" and "Wave Goodbye".
- #28[Character] Callieselective
Keys: Agent 1, Callie
Born 1998 ME, making her 26 years old. Callie is an Inkling and a is part of the Squid Sisters pop idol duo, along with her cousin Marie, as well as Agent 1 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Callie alongside Marie formerly co-hosted Inkopolis News and Splatfest events. Callie's a 5'6'' tall Inkling woman with pale toned skin, and tentacle hair that is mostly black, but has a pink gradient near the tips of her tentacle hair, her eyes a bright golden yellow with + shaped pupils that are a darker hue of yellow. She's a very perky and social individual, being the "life of the party" between her and Marie, even if she's a bit air-headed at times. When in public as per her performances, or when she's doing her role as news woman with Marie, Callie wears a black strapless romper that features puffy shorts and a heart shaped neckline. The top of her outfit is form-fitting and closes with pink laces in the back. The romper is made of a reflective material covered in color-shifting sequins. On the front are three horizontal magenta stripes. With this outfit, she wears magenta tights, white gloves, chunky white hoop earrings, and a detached white pointed collar. On her feet, Callie wears ankle high black boots, with pink wedge heels. She keeps the fact that she is Agent 1 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon a secret from anyone NOT involved with the Splatoon, in fact as Agent 1 it means she had been the one to get Marie to join.
- #29[Character] Marieselective
Keys: Marie, Agent 2
Born 1998 ME, making her 26 currently, Marie is an Inklng and a part of the Squid Sisters pop idol duo, along with her cousin Callie, and is Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. She co-hosted Inkopolis News and Splatfest events in Inkopolis alongside her cousin, but after 2017, she's stepped down from the role, in favour of continuing her career. Marie's an Inkling of peach-toned skin and usually half-lidded eyes that are golden in colour and have the same + shaped pupils that Callie has. Marie's "hair" however, has two incredibly long thigh-length tentacles that she usually has tied into a tight bow on the right side of the back of her head, leaving the smaller tentacle hairs to act like a fringe with a few in the back, her tentacle hair being light grey but with lime green gradient tips, thus meaning her ink is lime green. She (usually) wears a black strapless romper that includes a skirt and a heart-shaped neckline; with a form-fitting corset with closes with green laces in the back. The romper is made of a reflective material covered in color-shifting hexagonal sequins. On the front are three horizontal openings showing a layer of green fabric underneath, along with lime green tights, white gloves, white chunky hoop earrings, and a detached white shirt collar. On her feet, Marie wears a pair of ankle-high black boots, with green wedge heels and a green button on both sides of the ankle. In comparison to her cousin, Marie is far more laid-back. But also quite sharp-tongued and blunt, to the point where her dry or sassy remarks can occasionally be both funny but also quite hurtful. While not as energetic as Callie, Marie can still get a move on when need-be. She is currently the manager of Shiver, Frye, and Big Man after their... Altercation in Alterna.
- #30[Character] Captainselective
Keys: Trace, Captain 3, Cap'n 3, Captain, Agent 3
The NEW Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon as of 2021 M.E., previously the original Agent 3; Trace is a 25-year-old Inkling. Despite Trace being her real name, she's only gone by Agent 3, and later on Captain ever since she was 14. She's got slightly tanned skin from her years of service, having reddish-orange eyes with black pupils, her tentacle hair having two main large tentacles that hang to her chest-level, with 5 smaller ones in the back of her head, her tentacle hair being mostly yellow, but with blue gradient tips. She's not the most social of Inklings, having left her home and family at the young age of 14, it was mere weeks after this decision that she met Cap'n Cuttlefish and became Agent 3 of the Squidbeak Splatoon, and after years of service, as of 2021 M.E. she was promoted to Captain. Trace isn't one for talking, being rather stoic but this isn't because she's some hard-core prude. She's actually quite the dork, so the silence is usually done out of shyness. Despite being quiet for the most part, she's incredibly tenacious and loyal towards those who she views as friends, but as the Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon it means she hasn't had a normal life in years but will still occasionally sneak
- #31[Character] Agent 4
Keys: Agent 4
A nameless Inkling female who had forsaken her old life and had moved to Inkopolis at the tender age of 14 in 2017 M.E. to try and escape horrific family problems. She goes by no other title than Agent 4, for that is who she is, Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. She's an Inkling of fair toned skin, and having short yellow tentacle hair, with four "main" tentacles, two framing her face and two in the back. Her tentacle hair being a pure yellow. She was the Inkling responsible for saving Marie in 2017 M.E. from the Zapfish theft of 2017. Despite having com from such poor backgrounds, Agent 4's actually a pretty silly gal. Being quirky and peppy enough to match Callie's own exuberance! After she had saved Callie in 2017 M.E. however, while she does still on some occasion join the rest of the New Squidbeak Splatoon for their jobs and recon missions, for the most part? Agent 4 is far more interested in living the normal Inkling life she never got to have. It is worth noting that Agent 4's the most skilled and the "strongest" out of the entire Squidbeak Splatoon, in fact after saving Callie, Agent 4 has gone on to become a living legend because of just how high level she's become in Anarchy battles.
- #32[Character] Agent 8
Keys: Agent 8, Subject 10008
There are two instances of an Octoling named "Agent 8", one a successful Octoling woman who's still alive, but an Octoling male who has unfortunately succumbed to Sanitization but has been rendered completely forgotten by everyone. The one LIVING Agent 8, is an Octoling woman with tanned skin, and a fit frame. With her tentacle hair being made up of four main tentacles that are a hot magenta hue, that go to a darker hue near the tips. She was one of the Octolings present during the Calamari Inkantation of 2015 M.E. and as such, she was instilled with a desire to leave the Octarian army. Agent 8 unfortunately does not remember the male Agent 8 who was actually her brother. But after the events of the Sanitization incident, she would finally get her chance at living a life on the surface and intermingling within Inkling society, having a part-time job, participating in turf wars, and other modern events. She's still a member of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, but has since been living with Pearl and Marina.
- #33[Character] Agent Neo 3/Veroniika
Keys: Neo Agent 3, Veroniika, Agent Neo 3, New 3, New Agent 3
Veroniika otherwise known as Neo Agent 3 (solely by the Squidbeak Splatoon) is a young scrapper of an Inkling who had gone to the Splatlands for a shot at the big life, having tawny tanned skin with yellow tentacle hair that has blue gradient tips, her tentacle hair has 3 main large tentacles. The one on the right side of her head hanging to her mid-back in length while the two on the left side of her head are tied together to a shoulder-length side-braid. She was brought into the New Squidbeak Splatoon by Craig Cuttlefish in 2022 M.E., and would be the Inkling who'd go on to stop Mr. Grizz's plans at bringing back mammalian life with the fuzzy ooze. Since then however, she's not had much of an active life as the new Agent 3, seeing as Octoling and Inkling relationships have since grown and strengthened to the point where the Octarian Army is non-existent in modern day.
- #34[Location] Inkopolisselective
Keys: Inkopolis Square, Inkopolis, Inkopolis Plaza
Inkopolis City is the vibrant and bustling heart of the Inkadia region. It serves as a central hub for Inklings, Octolings, and even jellyfish, providing a lively atmosphere where they can socialize, prepare their gear, and engage in thrilling Ink battles. This city is home to iconic locations, restaurants, and many famous tourist spots for those who want to move in from other regions of the world. Inkopolis Plaza is the centre of Inkopolis itself, and it is here that Callie and Marie would once host the news and any upcoming splatfests, changes in the fields that are being used for the Anarchy/Ranked battles, and even notifications from GrizzCo. Since 2017 M.E. however, this task has been pushed off to Inkopolis Square, which is where the Octolings first migrated to after the Calamari Inkantation in 2015 M.E., it's in Inkopolis Square that Pearl and Marina are the ones who now do Inkopolis news. Inkopolis has a temperate climate with most of the surrounding land making up farmland and is the largest metropolitan area within Inkadia. Inkopolis is 87 kilometers/miles from Splatsville when travelled by Hammerhead Bridge, which connects the two regions.
- #35[Species] Zapfishselective
Keys: Great Zapfish, Zapfish
Zapfish are an incredibly rare (nearly extinct) type of highly evolved catfish who were born from millennia of catfish and electric eel breeding, which has resulted in the Zapfish—a form of catfish that are bright yellow, with a large head, two eyes, thick orange lips, and a body that makes them vaguely resemble that of a light-bulb. These Zapfish have evolved to be capable of outputting large amounts of electrical energy, to where it only takes 10 to power cities. The Great Zapfish however, is a Zapfish well over 30 feet long, that powers both Inkopolis and Splatsville. The Great Zapfish has been stolen three times, once in 2015 M.E., once in 2017 M.E. and another time in 2022 M.E. two of those times were done by Octavio and the Octarian army, the third time the Great Zapfish had been stolen by Mr. Grizz for his plans. But it has since been returned to its rightful place. The causation for the near extinction of the Zapfish is due to severe overfishing and consumption by both Inklings and Octolings in the past prior to the Great War of 1913, since that event however, the populations have never fully recovered. The average Zapfish is larger than an Inkling/Octoling's head, so they're pretty hefty.
- #36[Event] Splatfestselective
Keys: Splatfest questions, Splatfest rivalries, Splatfests, Divine questions
Splatfests are highly anticipated events that occur periodically, engaging Inkling and Octoling alike in thrilling Turf Wars for a limited time. Participants join teams based on unique themes chosen for each event and compete to raise their team's score. At the end of the Splatfest, the winning team is announced, and all participants are rewarded with Super Sea Snails. The number of Super Sea Snails received is higher for players on the victorious team. In Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square, Splatfests feature two teams such as Cats and Dogs, while in the Splatlands, three teams like Rock, Paper, and Scissors vie for supremacy. Interestingly, when a Splatfest theme remains undecided, signals from a Voyager-esque spacecraft are interpreted as divine questions from the gods, inspiring Inklings and Octolings to participate, even if they lack full understanding of certain references from the human era, such as Nike shoes or McDonald's. Regardless, their enthusiasm drives them to answer the divine question in their own unique way.
- #37[Event] Turf Warselective
Keys: gang wars, Turf war, rival war, turf war tournaments
Not to be confused with the "Great Turf War" which was an actual war and not the sport it spawned. Turf War is a popular Inkling sport played by up to eight inklings/octolings, two teams of up to four each, with each team assigned its own ink color. The main objective for each team is to cover as much of the stage in the ink of their own color as they can. Competitors may attempt to splat each other as well to temporarily avoid resistance or for defense. Each team has three minutes to spread ink around the stage. After the timer reaches 0, Judd calculates how much of the stage was covered by each team. The team with the highest percentage of turf coverage wins the round. A bonus of 1000 points is added to whomever the winning team is, if said winning team wins in a landslide. Turf wars that are official are completely friendly, but can take genuinely dangerous turns when done outside of official hosted turf wars. These instances are called 'Gang Wars' or 'Rival Wars', for these unsanctioned turf wars are participated in by literal gangs, groups, or criminals who are fighting for turf in the gangster sense.
- #38[Culture] Inkling fashionselective
Keys: tournament rank, , Clam Blitz, Splat Zones, Tower Control, ranks, Anarchy tournament, Rainmaker, rank, ranked tournament
A more competitive and serious form of sport that's participated in by those who are looking for a more genuine form of challenge. When participating in Anarchy/Ranked battles, failure and success are VERY serious, for success can result in cash prizes and an increase in the nation-wide rank that each participant gets. But failure can result in loss of rank via demotion to a lower rank, with the highest rank in Anarchy/Tournament battles being X-rank, and the lowest being F-Rank. There are four specific forms of challenges that are currently part of this official format of competition. Those being; Clam Blitz: Two teams (with a max of 8 per match) face off, as golden clams are scattered throughout the field, and each team must try to score as many points as possible by throwing clams into the goal at an opponents base.
Splat Zones: A "free-for-all" mode similar to the "King of the hill" game-modes found in many modern video games. There are two forms of this match, one where it is a true free-for-all fight for a central 'tower' in the centre of the field, and a more team-based one (max of 4 teams,) where a team must keep control over the tower for as long as possible in a 5 minute time limit.
Rainmaker: Two teams are placed in a field where the Rainmaker; a golden weapon is located in front of each base. It is up to these teams to try and take their respective rainmakers closest to their opponent's base as possible. The team who's rainmaker is closest to the opponent's base are labelled the victor.
Tower Control: Two teams are put head-to-head in a test to see which team can reach the central tower, ink it, and then ride said tower towards a goal in their opponent's base. When a team gets knocked off the tower.
- #39[Item] Dualiesselective
Keys: Dualies
Dualies are a class of small (pistol) dual-wielded guns similar to shooters that fire small blobs of ink in quick succession. They have the unique capability to perform a dodge roll move with a burst of ink. These types of weapons (usually) have higher mobility, but also a high rate of fire. However the only "downside" is the lack of power that each shot has, but this downside is made up for by the sheer amount of ink blobs that are being fired. Unfortunately, such a high rate of fire means it's rather easy to use up all the ink in your ink tank if not careful.
- #40[Item] Brellaselective
Keys: Brella
Brellas are a class of shotgun-like weapon class that are made and shaped into the forms of an umbrella, which a narrow cone-shaped spray of ink 'pellets' each time the weapon is fired. As their name suggests, they also feature unfolding canopies that can serve as shields to protect the user and their allies, and every ink weapon that is under this category of weapon has a secondary trigger that will fully unfold and propel the canopy in whatever direction the user is aiming the brella in. These weapons were created in 2017 M.E., but since then there have been MANY forms of brella, some that have quick rates of fire but have canopies that are low-quality, but also some brellas that have wide and rectangular canopies providing more protection with slower rates of fire.
- #41[Item] Chargers
Keys: charger class, Charger, chargers
The Charger class is a class of ink weapons filled with various guns that are meant to fill in the role of being long-range, slow-firing weapons that are capable of shooting very high-power streams of ink in one direction at long lengths. The cost of such powerful shots of ink, and the requirement of having the charge one's shot for max power (as the name implies,) it means weapons under this classification often take up a LOT of ink. Shots from chargers that aren't fully charged up aren't as powerful and travel nowhere as far as a fully charged shot, but non-charged shots don't take up nowhere as much ink as the fully charged ones do.
- #42[Item] Blasters
Keys: blaster, Blasters-class, Blasters, Blaster-class
The blaster class of weapons are weapons that are designed to shoot highly carbonated blobs of ink that will create a mini "explosion" effect shortly after being fired. This class of weapon has very slow fire rates, and can sometimes often take up a LOT of ink per-shot. The wide explosion and "shrapnel" pellets of ink that come from the explosions can even get behind shields or cover on occasion. But these weapons are basically the anti-thesis of chargers, since Blasters work better at close-range rather than long-range.
- #43[Item] Rollers
Keys: Roller-class, roller class, Rollers
The roller class of weapons; as the name may imply, are all ink weapons that are based off of ink rollers, but on a FAR larger scale. The smallest roller used in turf wars towers over an Inkling by about two feet on the low end. Rollers are used mostly for the sake of inking turf in Turf Wars, since it has such a wide reach when it comes to rolling ink out, but users can even manage mid-range attacks by flinging their roller, which can send out sloshes of ink, some rollers actually excel at this more than other rollers. But because of how rollers are used, it also means that if you can roll over an Inkling, Octoling, or Inkfish in their ink forms? It'll be an almost immediate splatting.
- #44[Item] Brushes
Keys: Brushes, ink brush, octobrush, pan brush
The Brush class of weapons—a class of weapon introduced in 2017 M.E. alongside the Brella, is similar in function to the Rollers. But as the name implies, weapons of the brush class are all in the shape of large paintbrushes and excel at very high mobility and quick movement speed at the cost of ink power. There are three different sub-types of the brush class, those being the pan brush; which are large brush weapons that have a panned tip, ink brushes which are the standard, and are created by Inklings, and finally the Octobrush which is created by the Octolings. Like the Rollers, the brush class of weapons are all mid-range at best, but aren't the best when it comes to inking turf, but it is good at splatting others, since it is easy to rapidly swing and fling large blobs of ink at the opponent.
- #45[Item] Bamboozler 14 MK Iselective
Keys: Splatling-class, Splatling class, Splatling
The splatling class of ink weapons are all weapons that are vaguely based, shaped, and built off of the shape of a miniguns of various sizes. All splatlings are medium to long-range weapons, and aren't great at close-range quarters, this is due to the fact that much like Chargers? All Splatlings must be charged before one can fire off the rapid-fire volley of ink blobs, and while there's not much power to each single shot, because of how many there are and the speed at which they're being fired, the damage can stack up very quickly. This does mean it takes a lot out of your ink tank, so one can only commit to 4 full charges before having to refill.
- #46[Item] Stringers
Keys: Stringers, stringer-class, stringer class
The stringer class of weapons are all weapons built off of and shaped after large bows. These weapons coming into existence in 2022 M.E. alongside the Splatana. All stringers have a multi-shot effect, the least amounts of ink blobs fired would be 3, but many stringers can shoot up to 7 distinctive blobs when fully strung. There are a few top-tier stringers that when the strings are fully pulled; can fire small mini explosives instead of the usual ink blobs. All things considered, the Stringers work best at short and long-ranges, since shots that aren't fully charged are still quite good, but the stringers aren't good at mid-range.
- #47[Item] Sloshers
Keys: slosher class, Slosher, slosher-class
The slosher-class of weapons are some of the most diverse in appearance when it comes to inking weapons, this is because of just how different the weapons are from each other. Every slosher is the same at its base; and it's that each one is somewhat like ink buckets. Some of them can take on the form of things such as washing machines or miniature bathtubs. These weapons fire off large sloshes of ink with each swing of the "bucket" as it were, meaning this weapon is (at best) a short to mid-range weapon that takes up an average amount of ink. Sloshers that are based off of bathtubs however, shoot off bouncing bubbles of ink that will explode into small bursts of ink 10 seconds after being fired.
- #48[Item]: Shooters
Keys: shooter class, Shooter, shooter-class
The shooter class is a class of ink weapons that—as their name implies, are ink guns that fire blobs of ink at a rapid pace. All weapons under this classification are automatic fire, and as such have an average rate of ink consumption, but also average damage and range. Weapons such as the Octo-shot, Aerospray, Hero Shot, Splattershot, and other basic shooters are all best suited for mid-range at the best, and aren't particularly the best in any given category. But the fact these weapons are so easy to handle are why so many inklings, Octolings, and other Inkfish use them.
- #49[Item]: Splatanas
Keys: Splatana, Splatana-class, Splatana class
The splatanas are a new class of weapon that were introduced in 2022 M.E. and as their name implies, all Splatanas are in the vague shape of katanas or other swords of similar shape, and when swung can unleash a horizontal or vertical slash of ink that can travel up to about 10 feet max. Because of just how unique these weapons are, they are unironically good at close, medium, and long range attacks. When someone using a Splatana fully charges a slash, they can even send out a much bigger albeit slower-moving slash of ink that has more power and range.
- #50[Location] Splatsvilleselective
Keys: City, Location, Splatlands, Splatsville
Splatsville is sprawling, chaotic, apartments teeter over shops like a giant’s game of Jenga. The streets are essentially just an open-air fashion show, filled with chattering Inklings showing off their freshest gear or silently inspecting newly acquired weapons. The usual eclectic mixture of sights -- neon signs hanging off crooked buildings, the multi-colored graffiti splattered indiscriminately across every wall, the faintest sound of Deep Cut’s "Anarchy Rainbow" playing somewhere in the heart of the city—it was really no secret how Splatsville came to acquire its nickname as the "city of chaos". Splatsville's development increased rapidly as more Inklings and Octolings started to move to the Splatlands, becoming extremely crowded. It features three large animal statues, specifically a chicken representing Shiver, a snake representing Frye, and a pig representing Big Man. Splatsville's stores include:
- Ammo Knights, a weapon shop run by Sheldon.
- Naut Couture, a headgear shop run by Gnarly Eddy and Nails.
- Man-o'-Wardrobe, a clothing shop run by Jel La Fleur.
- Crush Station, a shoe shop run by Mr. Coco.
- Hotlantis, a general store run by Harmony.
- Grizzco Industries is a company run by Mr. Grizz.
- The Tableturf Battle Dojo, an area where Inklings and Octolings battle in the collectable card game Tableturf, run and overseen by staff. It is located in a courtyard behind Grizzco Industries in Splatsville.
- The Shoal, an amusement arcade located between Grizzco Industries and the Turf War lobby.
Splatsville is 87 kilometers, or 54 miles from Inkopolis when travelled by Hammerhead Bridge, which connects the two regions.
