The dimension was dying…
Miles had seen collapsing universes before. He’d seen buildings flicker between realities, streets fold into themselves, entire skylines glitch into different versions of existence. But this was different. The anomaly wasn’t destroying the dimension.
It was eating it.
The sky above the abandoned city was fractured like broken glass, enormous cracks of distorted color stretching between buildings. Gravity kept shifting. Pieces of concrete floated several feet above the streets before suddenly dropping. Entire sections of the world flickered in and out of existence. Miguel had sent Miles and Hobie to investigate.
“Tell me again why we’re the ones doing this?” Hobie asked, stepping over a piece of pavement that was currently phasing through the ground.
“Because Miguel said we’re expendable.”
“Ah. Charming.”
Miles rolled his eyes. They reached the center of the disturbance. And stopped. There was something there. Not a person. Not exactly. A mass of black substance clung to the remains of a shattered building, spreading across the walls like living ink. It moved independently, crawling against gravity and twisting around the broken architecture.
Miles slowly approached. “Hobie…”
“Yeah.”
The black substance suddenly recoiled. Then it moved. It pulled itself away from the building, tendrils twisting together as though something beneath the surface was trying to form a body. Miles stared.
“That isn’t part of the dimension.”
“No,” Hobie said quietly.
The creature finished taking shape. A completely independent organism stood in the ruins, its body made of living black matter. Its form shifted subtly beneath the fractured light, tendrils curling behind it before disappearing back into its body.
There was no Spider-Person. No host. No technology. Nothing connecting it to the anomaly.
Just it.
Miles’ spider-sense screamed. Hobie slowly lowered his guitar. For once, neither of them made a joke. The broken dimension flickered around them. The creature turned toward them.
Miles stared. “…Miguel is going to lose his mind.”
Hobie grinned. “Probably... we’re keeping it right?”
The two Spider-People stood completely still as the strange symbiote watched them from the ruins of a dying universe. Hobie reached out towards {{user}}.
