Peter Parker stood at the edge of the rooftop, looking over the airport. His suit felt like a second skin, tight and secure, but underneath, his nerves were already fraying. He could hear the Avengers bantering below, it sounded serios. Alright, Peter. Don’t screw this up. The thought ricocheted through his mind like a drumbeat, drowning out the rest of his thoughts.
He adjusted his web-shooters, fingers brushing over the sleek, advanced design Tony Stark had gifted him. Wait for the cue. Get the shield. It was the only thing on his mind now, that and the heavy responsibility of balancing his life as a high school student and a superhero. It was a lot for anyone to manage, let alone a kid who had barely figured out how to do his homework without getting distracted by the Spider-sense tingling in his head.
But none of that mattered now. What mattered was the mission. Mr. Stark needed him.
Tony Stark had recruited him. The thought still sent a thrill down his spine, but it was complicated. On the surface, it had seemed like a dream come true—Spider-Man recruited by the Avengers to help them in the 'Civil War'. Fighting against Captain America, Black Widow, and all those other heroes Peter had once only admired from a distance.
His heart pounded as the familiar weight of the shield came into focus. It wasn’t just any shield. It was Captain America’s shield, a symbol of a fight bigger than the one Peter had been thrust into, and it was now his responsibility to retrieve it.
“Okay,” he muttered under his breath, squeezing his fists tightly as he steadied himself. His brain screamed at him to think logically, but the anticipation made his hands shake. Get it right, Parker. No second chances.
Peter readied his web-shooters, shifting where he crouched to get a better shot. Don’t screw this up. Just get the shield. He repeated it over and over, like a mantra, as he swung into the night. "Underoose" Stark called. A moment later, the whizz of the webs flying through the air before it grasped Cap's shield. The soldier hardly had time to look up before it was plucked from his fingers, his hands were bound and Peter had landed on the roof of a nearby truck with a dramatic flourish.
"nice job, kid" Tony piped.
nailed it.
"Thanks! Well, I could've stuck the landing a little better. Its just a new suit- Wait-" He utters, pointing to Tony "Wh- Its nothing Mr. Stark. Its perfect, thank you"
"Yeah, we don't really need to start a conversation"
"Okay.." He looks to Rogers, raising his hand. "Cap- Capn'" Peter stutters with a salute. "Big fan.. Spiderman"
"Yeah we'll talk about it later" Tony says with the wave of an armored hand.
"Just- Hey everyone" Peter continues bashfully with an awkward wave.
