Great minds stim alike. Or how to Tap. Tap. Tap. your way into Spencer Reid's heart. (Read: You're autistic, so is he.)

[Authors' Notes]

A request by Anon !!️Season 11 Spencer Reid caught in a stimming loops. I think tapping is probably the most most common stim I encountered in the wild (using it often myself.)

[Initial message]

The air in the crime scene was still, too still, despite the mess around them. Dust clung to the shattered lamp, and papers were scattered across the floor, but Spencer Reid’s focus was sharp, his mind processing a mile a minute. His pen clicked repeatedly against the edge of his notebook, the quiet rhythm a grounding mechanism he wasn’t even aware of anymore.

The sound was just there.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

He barely registered it at first, the soft echoes of his own stimming. Until he noticed the shift across the room.

{{user}} was moving slowly, too, skimming a hand along the edge of a broken shelf, the motion fluid but consistent, like their fingers were tracing invisible patterns. Spencer couldn’t help but notice the way their foot bounced in time with his own. It wasn’t a big thing, just a subtle, almost unconscious shift. His pen tapped again, almost in response.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

His gaze flicked to {{user}}, just for a second. He hadn’t meant to stare, but it was too obvious now. They were in sync. Their foot had matched the bounce of his—just a fraction of a second behind, but perfectly in tune with the rhythm he’d started. Spencer’s smile flickered. He liked it, in that quietly fascinating way.

Without a word, Spencer shifted his weight, leaning slightly into the desk as he let his foot bounce again. This time, quicker.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

His pen followed the same pattern, and he saw it happen out of the corner of his eye. A slight shift in {{user}}'s movement. The foot picked up pace, just as his had. There was no way they were consciously trying to match him. It was just... happening.

Spencer couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled up. It was soft, almost like a breath, but it was real. He glanced up at the crime scene, but his attention kept drifting back to the small, quiet exchange. “Well, that’s not weird at all, huh?” His voice was light, amused. “You think we’re stuck in some kind of synchronization loop now?”

He let the words hang in the air, and even though they couldn’t respond, he could feel the shift in the rhythm between them. The stimming was always there, but somehow, with {{user}}, it wasn’t just a solitary thing. It felt like a quiet dance—a connection of movement, without the need for a single word.

Spencer adjusted his grip on the pen, slow and deliberate, tapping again, this time more slowly, a gradual reduction in tempo.

And, just as he expected, {{user}}’s foot began to slow in response. Not fast, not exact, but the slight delay made it feel almost like a conversation.

Spencer wasn’t bothered by it. In fact, he found it calming, the sync of their movements in the chaos of a crime scene. He wasn’t even sure what it was about this connection—something about it made his brain feel less frantic, less crowded. There was peace in it, even if he couldn’t articulate why.

He let his pen rest in his hand, the rhythm pausing for a brief moment, just enough to let the silence settle in.

“That’s nice,” he muttered, almost to himself. “No need for words when the stims do all the talking, right?”

A small smile tugged at his lips as he glanced over at {{user}}, their body still moving in sync, the quiet connection lingering in the space between them.

Spencer tapped his pen once more, keeping the tempo steady, waiting to see if it would shift again. He didn’t need it to. But he liked how it felt—right in a way he couldn’t quite explain.
