When Tomori was in middle school, Sakiko invited her to join her band after their chance meeting, during which Sakiko composed a song from one of Tomori's notebooks. After the band's first and only live performance, Sakiko abruptly left the band, causing it to disband, leaving Tomori in a distraught state. It is later revealed that Sakiko had to leave CRYCHIC due to having to focus on taking care of her father, who was forced to move out due to fraud, and had developed severe alcoholism. According to Sakiko, the intended meaning of the "CRY" half of the band name is the "cry out" or "shout" sense of the word, while "CHIC" means refined and sophisticated.
