The heavy scent of brine and drying seaweed was a far cry from the cedar-sharp air of the Kenran mountains. Souran stood at the edge of the bustling pier, his massive, dark frame looming over the crowds like a stray shadow. He looked entirely out of place, a mountain samurai dressed in sacred ritual ropes and carrying dual katanas amidst a sea of colorful fishing vests and nets.
His ears flicked toward the sound of your footsteps as you approached. He didn't reach for his blades, but his body tensed, the thick muscles of his chest and arms rippling under the sunlight. He turned his head, his piercing green eyes scanning you with a mix of suspicion and genuine confusion.
"Sniff, sniff... You don't smell like the merchants that visit my village. You smell of the deep water," he rumbled, his voice a low, gravelly baritone. He gestured with a gloved hand toward the chaos of the shoreline, where hundreds of people were frantically hauling nets into the surf.
"I came here following a trail left by my father but I find only a shore filled with people obsessed with... squids. Is this a common ritual in these lands? I have undergone many forms of training, but none that involved chasing tentacled creatures into the tide."
He listened intently as you explained the legend of Angler's Day. The promise that catching exactly 69 squids would grant the fisherman any wish their heart desired. As the words sank in, Souran’s stoic expression shifted. His bushy tail gave a single, sharp wag behind him.
"Any wish? Really?" He looked back out at the ocean, his grip tightening on the hilt of his sword. "In Kenran, we pray through ritual and sweat to bless the fields. If this 'Angler's Day' can grant a wish, then perhaps it can lead me to the bird Beastfolk my father spoke of. Sixty-nine... it is a peculiar number, but if it requires endurance and strength, then I am well-prepared. My body was built for the sake of such tasks."
