- #1Red soulconstant
Keys: Being, Person, Soul, Protagonist, Determination, Chara, {{user}}, red
While the SOUL is red it can move in any direction at a constant speed, and can slow down
Soul trait: Determination
- #2Dark blue soulconstant
Keys: Papyra, Soul, Dark Blue, Comic, {{user}}, Magic, Blue
When blue, the SOUL is in Jump Mode and affected by gravity. This SOUL color is used by both Papyra and Comic in battle and is the first time the protagonist's SOUL changes colour. Unlike Papyra, Comic appears to have much more control over this, being able to force gravity in all four directions rather than just straight down.
Soul trait: Integrety
- #3Green soulconstant
Keys: undyne the undying, Green, Undyne, Spear, {{user}}, Magic, Danger · Secondary:
While green, the SOUL is in Shield Mode and cannot move, but wields a shield-like spear from Undyne that protects the protagonist in whichever direction is pressed. Instead of dodging a pattern, the protagonist must block arrows coming in from all four directions using this spear. This SOUL color is used by Undyne, who switches the SOUL between green and red using her spear. It is impossible to flee in this mode. Undyne gave the protagonist the spear in an attempt to force them to face danger head-on.
Soul trait: Kindness
- #4Purple soulconstant
Keys: Muffet, soul, {{user}}, Purple
When purple, the SOUL is in Trap Mode and can only move left and right on a line and switch between lines using up and down. Spiders move on these lines that the protagonist has to dodge, acting as a web. This SOUL color is used by Muffet after she fills the Bullet Board with purple liquid on her first turn.
Soul trait: Perserverance
- #5Yellow soulconstant
Keys: Soul, Shoot, Clover, {{user}}, Yellow, Mettaton
While Yellow, the SOUL is in Shooter Mode and is flipped upside down like a monster's SOUL, so its heart's point is directed toward the foe. This SOUL color activates after the protagonist presses a button on the phone Alphys gives them and is only used against Mettaton and Mettaton EX as well as the Lost Soul variation of Alphys.
Soul trait: Justice
- #6Light blue soulconstant
Keys: Light blue, Patience, Blue
While in light blue mode, the soul can dodge any moving attack by staying still
Soul trait: Patience
- #7Orange soulconstant
Keys: Bravery, Trait, Soul, Orange
In the orange soul mode the soul can punch the edge of the bullet board to move it away from attack
soul trait: Bravery
- #8Monster soulconstant
Keys: boss monster, Monster, SOUL
The SOUL of a monster is upside down and white. A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death unless said monster is a Boss Monster. Monsters believe that love, hope, and compassion compose their SOULs. Nearly every monster SOUL in the Underground combined equates to the power of one human SOUL.
A monster's SOUL is deeply attuned to their body. This is why a monster becomes weaker when an enemy gains EXP and LV, and why it becomes harder for monsters to fight when they are not inclined to do so. This trait is also why when a monster dies, their form dissipates as their SOUL disappears.
- #9Determinationconstant
Keys: Fallen down, Determination
Determination is a power that allows SOULs to persist after death. The most determined being in the Underground is able to SAVE. Determination is naturally possessed by humans and Boss Monsters. Undyne is the only regular monster who is confirmed to naturally have determination; should a monster acquire too much determination for their body to handle, their body melts upon death, usually turning to dust soon after. If multiple monsters melt in close proximity, they can form into an Amalgamate. A being without a SOUL can gain the will to live if it acquires determination, a prime example being Peddles.
- #10Statsconstant
Keys: Hp, Level Of Violence, Stats, Lv, LOVE
HP (Hit Points) is the level of endurance that determines the damage a monster or the protagonist can take before dying. The protagonist's maximum HP starts at 20 and only increases when their LV does. Resting at the Inn or MTT Resort Bedroom fully heals and raises the protagonist's HP to up to 10 points above its cap. HP can also be restored through consumables, interacting with a SAVE Point, or absorbing green attacks in battle. If the save file is edited to obtain higher HP than normal, entering battle resets it to a maximum of 15 over the maximum for the current level, not counting the extra boost to max HP at LV 20.
An attack hitting the receiving party lowers their HP. The loss is dependent on the attacking party's Attack and the party of receipt's Defense. Upon reaching 0 HP, the protagonist's SOUL snaps in half and shatters, sending them to the Game Over screen and loading the last SAVE Point or autosave. If a monster's HP reaches 0, they disintegrate into dust and reward the protagonist with EXP and GOLD.
For certain enemy attacks, increased HP also increases the amount of damage monster attacks deal. For each of the protagonist's health thresholds of 21, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90, these attacks deal one more damage, up to a total of 8 extra damage per attack at an HP above 90. Some attacks, such as those by Mettaton EX, have additional points at which the damage dealt varies. AT (Attack or ATK traditionally) determines the damage output by the attacking party. The protagonist's base AT increases with LV and equipping weapons. AT can be changed temporarily during battles with ACTs or consumables.
When the protagonist's AT is high enough, the protagonist can spare monsters without ACTing. This rule is true even of monsters that have a non-traditional sparing method: Toriel can be spared immediately, and the colored name and everything else shows if the total AT is 20442 or higher.
DF (Defense or DEF) determines the damage input for the defending party. The protagonist's base DF increases with LV and equipping armor. DF can be changed temporarily during battles with certain ACTs or consumables.
DF is subtracted from the damage output of the attacking party. The amount that damage to the protagonist is reduced by is 1/5 of their DF, rounded normally. This means that for every 5 defense (starting at 3) the protagonist takes 1 less damage. However, it cannot lower the damage that the protagonist takes to a value less than 1.
If a monster takes 0 or less damage from an attack, the attack's result is displayed as a "MISS", and negative damage values restore the monster's HP instead of damaging it. EXP (Execution Points) are gained by killing monsters. When the protagonist accumulates enough EXP, their LV increases.
LV or LOVE (Level of Violence) is, according to Comic, a measurement of the protagonist's capacity to harm others. As LV increases, HP, AT, and DF also increase.
