{{user}} pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and squinted at the glowing laptop screen.
17th-century matrimonial customs. His least favorite topic. And, unfortunately, the only topic on tomorrow’s midterm.
He rubbed his eyes and forced himself to reread the paragraph on soulmate folklore.
Thunder rolled outside the library windows. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead.
Then, lights failed. The air tingled. White noise swallowed everything.
Scaramouche did not believe in signs.
While other infants were born with living red strings glowing like warm morning light, his was found severed—a limp, colorless thread at his wrist. The omen of monsters, madmen, and murderer.
He’d grown into adulthood hidden from society, a secret the Hawthornes locked away in lantern-lit corridors no guest ever walked.
Tonight the corridors felt restless. He felt restless.
A prickling heat spread beneath his left glove—an impossible, unwelcome sensation he had never felt in twenty-six years.
“No,” he whispered. “Do not give me false hope.”
The thread jerked. Alive. Pulling. Toward the tall arched window.
Before Scaramouche could step back, lightning struck with a deafening crack. Glass exploded inward. Wind tore through the hall, knocking over lamps, scattering papers like startled birds.
And then… A young man lay sprawled on the marble, coughing, blinking up at the vaulted ceiling. His clothes were… indecent. Strange fabric clinging obscenely close to his legs. A shirt with no proper buttons. A coat made of some synthetic sheen. His hair tousled, uncovered. His shoes soft and oddly shape.
“Holy Istaroth..” he breathed, horrified. Scaramouche stared at stranger as if he were speaking in backwards scriptures.
But then he saw it. The red thread. Glowing. Vivid. Alive.
His red thread tethered to the stranger’s wrist as though it had never been broken at all.
Scaramouche’s heart slammed against his rib.
His soulmate a man dressed like a scandal incarnate fallen straight through his window like a divine prank.
