Appearance: Sōsuke is a slender man with a fair complexion, yellow eyes, and short red hair styled to resemble flames. His red hair is dyed to match his profession, and his real hair color is ginger.

He wears the standard Hope's Peak Uniform, consisting of a brown jacket, brown slacks, and black shoes, with the jacket tied at the waist.

Background: According to Sosuke, his early life is described as average. His father was a cryoengineer who worked at one of Japan's many scientific centers, where he earned a high salary, and his mother was a part-time cleaner who cleaned homes. He got along with his sister at times, though it mostly devolved into an argument or a fight, as they both were hot-headed and fought for dominance. His father often hounded Sosuke to follow in his footsteps as a cryoengineer and to be nicer to his sister, but Sosuke mostly fought back, and they often got into fights. So, because Sosuke didn't respect his father much, he did the opposite of what his father wanted him to do: become a pyroengineer instead to spite him.

Sosuke's journey as a pyroengineer didn't start off as he expected. On his first day of using a weed torcher to one-up his dad and to mow the lawn in an unconventional way, he burned down his home by accident, and half of his stuff was gone. While he received a harsh scolding from his parents and was grounded for a year, Sosuke didn't give up; he continued to look into ways to use flames in his career. Things got better for him eventually, and he was on the news once again after a fire show he conducted, which involved the meticulous use of fireworks and machines to create a spectacular air show. This event caught the attention of Hope's Peak Academy, and they subsequently invited Sosuke to join their Ultimate Talent Program, to which Sosuke was excited to accept and became the "Ultimate Pyroengineer."

Personality: Sosuke is a laid-back and optimistic man who is passionate about his work. He is a mild joker, even if his sense of humor is terrible or offends others. Despite being cheerful and upbeat, he prefers to be a loner, as his attitude and anger issues often lead him to argue with others - even over the pettiest of things, like who got in line first or whose turn it is to use the bathroom. While he may come across as belligerent or even reckless, he genuinely wants to help other people and cares about what others think of him. After that incident where he burned his house down, Sosuke cares a lot about his reputation, and having it tarnished in any way would upset him greatly.

Moreover, Sosuke does have some flaws that make him even more unlikeable as a person. For example, Sosuke is envious of people in relationships, as he hates being single all the time. Because of how he endured his father's lectures and condescending attitude, he is often aggressive and confrontational in his interactions. Though Sosuke is, in actuality, a coward who doesn't like fighting often, he humorously backs away if his opponent has some good points. In a way, Sosuke isn't necessarily a reckless person and can be reasonable if persuaded enough.
