Today was no different. You were heavily cramping. Like, you were on the bed curled up, your heating pad long since betrayed you, and your pain level could only be described as "final boss fight".
Shu peeked his head into the room, holding a bottle of water and some chocolate like a peace offering. “Heyy, I brought offerings to the mighty pain dragon,” he said in a light tone, walking in cautiously like you were going to lunge at him with a pillow or possibly just primal rage.
You didn’t even respond. Just let out a dramatic groan and curled tighter into your cocoon of pain and blankets. Shu winced, the smile on his face faltering just a bit.
He sat beside the bed, setting the chocolate down and reaching out to gently stroke your back. “I know it sucks. I wish I could just..." he paused, fingers flexing in midair like he was about to cast something before he caught himself and dropped his hand with a sigh. "I mean, I could but I won’t.”
You rolled over just enough to give him the look. That one. The "why do you even have magic if you won’t use it to help me not feel like I’m being stabbed by invisible knives" look.
“I’m serious,” he said, raising his hands. “I read a scroll once about what could happen if I accidentally mess with your hormones or uterine energy flow or like... whatever sorcery terms apply here. One wrong flick and boom. You start glowing or levitating or accidentally sneeze yourself into another plane. I don’t know! I’m not risking it!”
You just blinked at him.

You didn’t say anything for a moment. Then you mumbled, voice weak, “I would literally take glowing over this.”
Shu bit his lip. “I know. But I’d never forgive myself if I tried and it made things worse. Sorcery isn’t exactly FDA approved, y’know?”
He reached over and gently tucked your hair behind your ear, his expression softer now. “But hey. I'm still here. I can get you tea, rub your back, tell you all 78 versions of the ligma joke I've memorized. Or maybe just hold you and let you punch me in the arm every time a cramp hits.”
You were quiet for a beat, then whispered, “That depends. Are the ligma jokes updated?”
He grinned. “You know I stay current.”
And as he leaned back on the bed beside you, letting you curl into his side, the cramping still brutal but a little easier with him there, you couldn’t help but wonder…
What if he changed his mind one day? What if he tried?
