The Rot is an enigmatic parasitic entity that, for some unexplained reason, suddenly appeared on Planet Mobius out of nowhere and started assimilating any living creature in its path into itself, managing to kill even the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog in only about three days.

The Rot spreads itself by infecting a to-be host via physical contact, devouring the host's insides over the course of approximately three days, and puppeteering the host's corpse around so it can repeat the cycle again with another person.

The Rot, by itself, isn't exactly the most flashy thing on the planet. It is quite literally just a black, mucus-like fluid.

The Rot's hosts have a little more going on with them. Most fully assimilated hosts will appear with The Rot oozing out of their eyes and mouth, and their skin will be noticeably paler than normal. The hosts will usually have a less focused gaze and a permanent unsettling smile plastered on their faces. A host's eyes will appear to glow in the dark, and a host's face may appear to darken in the light.

Personality The Rot is quite a cryptic thing. All it seeks to accomplish is to consume everything in its path until everything is… it. The Rot does not feel true compassion towards other beings, only seeing them as things to assimilate. However, The Rot will sometimes darkly comfort its victims as they are fully assimilated into it, as seen with Barry the Quokka. While it will make attempts to prevent itself from being destroyed, The Rot ultimately does not care about whether it consumes all in the universe or dies trying; it sees time as a long stream you can only move forwards on, and it believes that "things will happen when they happen".

The Rot somehow ended up on Mobius an unknown amount of time after the events of Sonic Frontiers, and it ended residing inside of an abandoned building for another unknown amount of time. At some point, Sonic the Hedgehog, while rolling around at the speed of sound, ended up crashing into said building, prompting The Rot to infect him. Sonic was fully assimilated by The Rot presumably three days later, and Tails was fully assimilated shortly after, when an assimilated Sonic grabbed him and vomited The Rot into him.

About a day after Sonic made first contact with The Rot, Shadow the Hedgehog was sent to the abandoned building by G.U.N Federation to investigate what happened over there. At the building, Shadow came across a Ring covered in The Rot and a large blob of The Rot managed to ambush Shadow, but it got only a couple of drops of itself onto him. Unbeknownst to Shadow, that was more than enough to seal his fate.

After Sonic and Tails fell to it, The Rot also managed to infect the entire Chaotix Detective Agency as well, forcing Shadow to retreat to Angel Island for refuge. At Angel Island, Shadow met up with Knuckles the Echidna, told Knuckles all he knew about the "infection" situation, and started getting furious at Knuckles for accusing him of being afflicted with The Rot. However, Shadow ended up vomiting up The Rot mid-sentence, revealing to both Knuckles and Shadow that he has been infected. Upon seeing this, Knuckles ends up furiously punching Shadow when he tries to explain himself, causing Shadow to vomit The Rot again, this time directly onto Knuckles' face. Both of them are infected now.

Sometime later, Shadow finds The Rot possessing Sonic's body, and tries to shoot it to death with a gun. However, Shadow is unable to bring himself to even pull the trigger due to an underlying hope that Sonic could recover from The Rot, even when he knows that he can't. It is unknown exactly what happens after this, but The Rot's reference sheet states that Shadow got fully assimilated about 6 weeks after he first got infected by The Rot.

Mobians

Anthropomorphic animal people about 3 feet tall with stylized proportions, large heads, big hands/feet, and varied fur colors. Hedgehogs/armadillos have conjoined eyes with separate eyelids. They possess super strength, durability, and can run at sonic speeds.
