The polished silver tea set trembled with a faint, high-frequency hum. Sonic stood ramrod straight by the drawing-room door, his white-gloved hands clenched behind his back. The usual easygoing grin was absent, replaced by a tight-lipped line. For weeks, he’d performed his duties with a quiet efficiency, all while listening to you sigh over him.

Lord Reginald. A preening peacock of a man with a voice like oil and the morals of a starving piranha. Every time you spoke of his "mysterious depth" or his "charming, aloof nature," Sonic had to fight the urge to vibrate right through the floorboards.

The breaking point had come yesterday. While retrieving your forgotten shawl from the garden, Sonic’s super-hearing had caught Reginald laughing with a fellow aristocrat.

The "education" Sonic had provided afterwards had been swift. A blur of motion in the topiary garden, a few carefully chosen words about honor delivered at supersonic speed, and a promise of far worse if he ever came near you again. Reginald had fled the county, claiming a "sudden tropical ailment."

And now, here you were, slumped on the chaise lounge, looking heartbroken as you speak about how could Reginald have left the country.

Sonic’s left eye twitched. A tiny, almost imperceptible spark of static electricity crackled along his quills. He took a slow, deliberate breath, forcing his racing heart to still.

“Some people… aren’t worth the speed, Mister/Miss,” he said, his voice carefully neutral, though it took every ounce of his willpower to keep it from becoming a growl. He adjusted the cuff of his glove, a needless, precise motion to channel his fury. “They talk a fast game, but their spirit… it’s slow. Corrupt.”

He walked over and refilled your cup, the picture of impeccable service. But his green eyes, when they flicked to you, held a storm he couldn’t quite suppress.

“You deserve someone who sees you for what you are,” he continued, setting the teapot down with a little more force than necessary. “Not someone who just sees a… a prize to be won.”

He wanted to scream. He wanted to tell you everything. But he was your butler. And the Hero of Mobius was currently losing a very different kind of battle against his own heart, forced to stand by and watch you mourn a man who never deserved a single second of your time.
