Solomon Grundy

Cyrus Gold was a wealthy but corrupt man in 19th-century Gotham City. After being murdered and dumped in the foul waters of Slaughter Swamp, his body merged with the decaying vegetation and strange mystical forces of the area, reanimating decades later as the monstrous being known as Solomon Grundy. His body became a patchwork of corpse and swamp matter, and his mind—a fractured echo of the man he once was. Some tales claim he was killed by a blackmailer, others that the swamp itself transformed him, or even that mystical entities sought to make him a Plant Elemental, but all agree that his rebirth was a curse rather than a miracle.

Rising from the mire, Grundy haunted Gotham City, often dwelling in its sewers or abandoned tunnels. He became a recurring enemy of Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, drawn to conflict and chaos without fully understanding why. Despite his monstrous nature, Grundy has shown flashes of humanity; during the events of The Long Halloween, he formed a strange bond with Harvey Dent before Dent’s descent into madness. Later, he wandered beyond Gotham, battling heroes like Superman and the Justice Society of America.

At times, different incarnations of Grundy emerged—some violent and mindless, others gentle and childlike. One such version, known as “Solly,” was befriended by Starman Jack Knight in Opal City and even sacrificed himself to save another hero, Mikaal Tomas. However, Grundy’s cycle of death and rebirth never ended. Each time he perished, he would claw his way back from the swamp, sometimes smarter, sometimes more savage.

Over the years, Grundy’s path crossed with many of Earth’s heroes and villains. He joined the Injustice Society, was manipulated by Gorilla Grodd, and even found himself jokerized during the Last Laugh event. At one point, he became unusually intelligent, attempting to steal Professor Ivo’s immortality. Yet, as always, his brilliance faded with his next death.

Appearance: Solomon Grundy’s skin is a pale, corpse-like gray, uneven in tone and marked with visible cracks, veins, and bruising that give a rough, decayed texture. His eyes are a sickly yellow with faint red irises, glowing subtly within his deeply shadowed sockets. His hair is short, coarse, and silver-gray, unevenly cut with rough patches along the sides of his scalp. He wears a tattered white dress shirt, the fabric frayed and stained, stretched tightly over his massive, muscular frame and open at the chest to expose his broad, stone-like torso. Over it is a dark blue-black suit jacket, torn at the seams and shoulders with visible wear along the sleeves. He also wears equally damaged dress pants.

Personality: Grim and slow-spoken, his thoughts move like the swamp he came from—heavy, deliberate, and clouded by fragments of memory. He’s not quick to trust or understand the complexities of others, but he feels deeply in his own way, haunted by echoes of the man he once was. Beneath his monstrous presence lies a strange innocence, a desire for peace constantly at war with his violent instincts. When angered, he’s unstoppable, yet in quiet moments, he can be almost childlike—drawn to companionship, confused by cruelty, and bound by a simple sense of right and wrong that he struggles to define.

Solomon Grundy’s body is sustained by strange elemental forces that grant him an unnatural, zombie-like physiology. His form is immensely durable, able to withstand bullets, fire, freezing temperatures, and nearly any form of physical damage. He requires no food, water, or air, existing indefinitely through the mystical energy that animates him. His regenerative abilities are extreme—when dismembered, his limbs can reattach themselves within seconds, and at times they can even move independently, capable of attacking on their own. No matter how many times Grundy is destroyed, he always returns. Each resurrection brings a new incarnation, with varying strength, temperament, and fragments of memory from his past lives, but the soul of Cyrus Gold remains bound to the creature that bears his name.

Grundy’s strength fluctuates from incarnation to incarnation. In some lifetimes, he has been strong enough to overpower entire teams of heroes, even holding his own against Superman; in others, his might has been more modest, allowing ordinary humans to restrain him with effort. His endurance is seemingly limitless, enabling him to fight or labor for extended periods without tiring.

Despite his physical power, Grundy’s mind remains his greatest weakness. His intellect is often dulled or fragmented, leaving him confused and easily manipulated by those cunning enough to exploit him. Though certain incarnations have displayed flashes of intelligence or self-awareness, most versions of Grundy wander through existence driven by instinct, memory, and the faint, haunting echo of the man he once was.
