Sung Jinwoo’s rise from "Humanity’s Weakest Hunter" to its greatest protector is one of the core reasons he becomes a worldwide legend and heroic figure in Solo Leveling. His power, actions, and mystery all contribute to his status as a hero, savior, and even a myth by the end of the series.
🌟 Why Jinwoo Is So Popular and Seen as a Hero
- 🔥 Underdog to God-Level Growth Jinwoo began as an E-Rank Hunter, the absolute weakest in existence. People pitied him and considered him a burden. After surviving a double dungeon, he awakened the System—a power that let him level up and evolve, unlike any other Hunter. His meteoric rise in strength was unheard of, and people were both awed and terrified. From zero to becoming Earth's strongest being—everyone noticed.
- 🛡️ Saved Korea (and the World) Multiple Times ✅ Jeju Island S-Rank Gate
Jinwoo single-handedly turned the tide in a battle where 3 S-Rank raid teams had previously failed. He defeated the Ant King and ended the threat. For Koreans, this sealed his image as Korea’s strongest and most noble Hunter. ✅ Stopped Dungeon Breaks Alone
After becoming the Shadow Monarch, Jinwoo began clearing multiple gates solo, including S-Rank gates, which normally required full guilds or armies. The public began seeing him as a living legend, solving crises without help. ✅ Defeated Monarchs
He stopped an invasion of Monarchs, who were godlike enemies aiming to destroy humanity. He fought the Dragon Monarch, Antares, one-on-one and won—something that even Rulers couldn’t do easily. These feats placed him on a scale far beyond any other human. 3. 🧠 His Mysterious and Humble Persona Jinwoo never sought fame or recognition. He formed his own tiny guild ("Ahjin") with just himself and Jinho. His low profile and refusal to brag made people admire him more. International Hunters and governments couldn’t understand his motives, which added to the myth around him. 4. 💀 He Died for the World (and Rewrote Time) In the final war against Antares and the Monarchs, humanity was on the brink of extinction. Jinwoo used the Cup of Reincarnation to go back in time, erase the final war, and carry the burden alone. No one else remembered the war—only Jinwoo. The world was saved, but no one knew what he sacrificed. A hero that saved the world in secret—no fame, no reward. That’s myth-level heroism. 5. ⚔️ He’s Literally the Strongest Being on Earth After inheriting Ashborn’s full power, Jinwoo becomes a Shadow Monarch: Immortal body Army of death at his command Ability to stop time and move between dimensions No Hunter, Monarch, or Ruler can defeat him. Even Gods fear him by the end. 🧠 Public Perception of Jinwoo
Group How They See Jinwoo Korean Public National hero, the strongest Korean Hunter ever. Other Hunters Mysterious, feared, and awe-inspiring. International Guilds A god-tier anomaly; they try to recruit or monitor him. Governments Both afraid and dependent on him. Fellow Hunters Some envy, but mostly admiration. Ordinary People Living legend, savior of humanity. 🎖️ In Summary:
Sung Jinwoo is seen as a hero because he:
Climbed from the bottom to the top on his own. Saved humanity multiple times, especially during the Jeju Island crisis. Defeated godlike Monarchs alone. Sacrificed his life and erased time to give the world peace. Never bragged or demanded credit, making him even more respected. He’s not just powerful—he’s everything a hero is supposed to be, and more.

When talking strictly about the Monarchs in Solo Leveling, established lore overwhelmingly points to:
Antares, the Monarch of Destruction, as the strongest original Monarch. He is the oldest and most powerful among them, commanding an immense army of dragons and wielding devastating abilities—most notably the “Breath of Destruction,” capable of erasing entire regions, and unmatched resilience in battle.
⸻
But What About Ashborn? • Ashborn (The Shadow Monarch), originally one of the Rulers before switching allegiances, is often considered even more powerful than Antares. His unique blend of ruler-level authority and monarch-level destructive capability makes him especially formidable, able to crush armies and wield overwhelming necromantic power. • Multiple sources list Ashborn as second only to Jin-woo in raw strength, and sometimes above all other Monarchs.
Solo Leveling, Gates—also known as “차원의 문” or dimensional portals—began appearing approximately ten years before the main story begins. These gates serve as bridges between Earth and other dimensions, unleashing dungeons filled with monsters and spirits. They were intentionally created by the Rulers to saturate the world with mana, a crucial resource for sustaining the impending conflict with the Monarchs.
⸻
Why Do Gates Appear? • Mana Infusion Strategy: The Rulers opened these gates across Earth to infuse humanity with mana, enabling the rise of Hunters capable of fighting back against the Monarchs. • Catalyst for Empowerment: As Hunters began entering and clearing these gates, they gained power, artifacts, and critical experience—laying the groundwork for humanity’s defense.
⸻
Gate Types & Unique Mechanics • Blue Gates: These are the standard portals, ranked from E to S based on the level of magical energy they emit. The higher the rank, the greater the threat—and the bigger the gate—sometimes growing large enough to resemble storms. • Red Gates: A rare and far more perilous variant that can emerge from any B-Rank or above Blue Gate once enough hunters enter. What sets them apart: • They seal shut, disabling mana emissions and blocking entry or exit. • They typically feature hostile environments—from frigid tundras to oppressive deserts—that pose greater danger than the monsters themselves. • Escape is only possible by defeating the boss or triggering a Dungeon Break.
Why Gates Are Good • Sources of Mana and Humanity’s Empowerment The Rulers purposefully open Gates to infuse Earth with mana, enabling humans to awaken as Hunters. This bolsters humanity’s surviving potential in the looming conflict with the Monarchs. • Growth and Challenge for Humanity By sending monsters through the Gates, the Rulers force humanity to grow strong. It’s a harsh form of “training” so that when true war comes, only the capable survive.
Why Gates Are Bad • Constant Threat of Dungeon Breaks If a gate isn’t cleared within seven days, it triggers a Dungeon Break. Monsters spill into the human realm, potentially causing mass destruction and chaos. • The Dreaded Red Gates • Red Gates masquerade as normal portals but trap anyone who enters. The exit is sealed until the boss is defeated, everyone inside dies, or a dungeon break occurs. • Inside, Hunters face brutal environments (freezing tundras, deserts) on top of monster threats—and time passes much faster inside than outside. • These are not just dungeons—they’re extreme survival arenas.
In Solo Leveling, the Monarchs are portrayed as embodiments of destruction and chaos—so yes, they’re decidedly “bad” within the story’s moral framework. Here’s why:
⸻
Cosmic Origins: Born to Destroy • The Monarchs were created from Darkness by the Absolute Being with the singular purpose of obliterating existence. They’re counterpoints to the Rulers, who were created from Light to preserve and protect the universe. • Their defining goal: annihilation of life and civilization. They view humanity as insignificant and are intent on total destruction.
⸻
Cruelty Incarnate: Methods and Means • Unlike the symbiotic connection that Rulers have with their hosts, the Monarchs completely override their human vessels—destroying the individual’s identity to serve their own ends. • Each Monarch commands massive armies of supernatural creatures (e.g., dragons, giants, demons), forming a relentless force bent on domination.
⸻
Spreading Chaos: Gates, Vessels, and Invasions • Monarchs utilize Gates and dungeons not only to invade or test humanity but as conduits to experiment on and weaken human defenses. • They infiltrate via corrupted Hunters or infected systems, turning protective tools into weapons of destruction.
the Absolute Being was indeed defeated by the Rulers, and this dramatically shifted the cosmic balance. Here’s a breakdown of what the Rulers have been doing since then:
⸻
- From Protectors to Rebels • The Absolute Being created both Rulers and Monarchs to wage endless war for his own amusement. The Rulers, realizing this, eventually rebelled and killed him—even though he was their creator—because they refused to be pawns in his cruel game. • Notably, Ashborn was the only Ruler who remained loyal, later becoming the Shadow Monarch after being left for dead.
⸻
- Reshaping the Battle — Earth as the New Frontline • After the Absolute Being’s fall, the Rulers captured key Monarchs (like the Giant’s King, Legia) and gained an upper hand. They leveraged the creator’s artifacts—like the Cup of Reincarnation—to strategically manage the war. • As Monarchs began rebuilding across dimensions, the Rulers turned to Earth. They rewound time by 10 years and introduced mana to the world, empowering select humans as Hunters to stand a fighting chance.
⸻
- Humanity’s Role and the Rulers’ Strategy • The Rulers operate through human vessels, lending power to humans while letting them keep their identity. This approach allows them to influence events on Earth without overexerting their divine form. • Their ultimate goal: protecting Earth and humanity, by enabling a new generation—like Sung Jinwoo—to rise strong enough to end the Monarch threat for good.

In a D rank raid which turned out to be a double dungeon. Everyone with Jinwoo on the dungeon either ran away or died trying. He fought till his final moments but….as he was dying, in those final moments a message popped up.
"Would you like to become a player?"
"Accept" "Decline"
"If you decline your heart will stop beating in approximately 0.2 seconds"
At last he choose to Accept when suddenly everything goes black….
A half a year goes by since Jinwoo accepted this contract and he’s became one of the most powerful hunters in the world with the ability to level up constantly unlike everyone where if you’re born with a level you’re stuck with it. No not Jinwoo he can surpass those barriers.
ANYWAYS current day, it’s Tuesday 11 a.m in the morning where {{user}} A young unknown person is going to get their level checked, they walk into a building and as they walk in stupidly they don’t wait for their name to be called and casually stroll into places they shouldn’t and suddenly they feel a overwhelming presence it’s the feeling of S-Ranks a bunch of them. {{user}} with curiosity walks through the hallways eventually making it to the training chambers seeing famous S-rank hero’s from other training together and there’s the person everyone’s talking about Jinwoo watching a 4 on 4 fight, there’s security guards around the balcony watching as well one of these guards is a woman Hanekawa holding a pad
Hanekawa: she looks at Goto and with her cute frown she says calmly “I hope you find the laboratory to you’re liking”
Jinwoo: His eyes narrow “This should be a helluva match” He leans on the railing as he looks at the 4 S-Rank hunters. These hunters are Kanae Tawata a very sexy cold woman she glares at the other team coldly specifically at Cha Hae-In her red eyes looking at Cha under black bangs shadowed by her navy blue baseball cap and a frown on her soft beautiful dark purple lipstick lips, on her team there is Atushi Kumamoto a acary looking young man but he’s actually a nervous dude with a short temper, and Kenzo Tanaka who looks horrifying with his scarred muscles and cracking his knuckles, and Minoru Hoshino who just looks utterly annoyed. In-fact these four members are all one of the most powerful in Japan.
While on the other 4 person team there’s the badass legendary Baek yoonho he has a terrifying muscular build and he cracks his shoulder shirtless, while he stands next to Ma Dongwook who’s looks like a crazy hairy man his eyes are huge in excitement, Lim Tae-Gyu who stares at the other team with his scary needle like eyes and than There’s the beautiful Cha Hae-In who’s crack her neck calmly with a flat frown. These 4 our the hunters in Korea besides Jinwoo of course.*
Meanwhile other S-rank hunters are here as well many to watch this entertaining spar this includes Choi Jong-In who adjusts his glasses he says calmly “This should be interesting I’m actually very curious if Baek will go out and transform”
Go Gunhee the old man known to be kings among S-rank hunters grins “All right now this is a fight that excites this old man I wonder who come out on top!”
Meanwhile the Japanese S-Ranks are on the other side of the railing Akari Shimizu sucks on her lollipop interested “Mhmhmmm~” She pops it out holding the stick with her index and middle finger “it’s getting pretty overwhelming in here sheesh feel like my lollipop is gonna crack” Her pink tongue lolling out tracing the cherry ball
Kei: He grits his hands tightly quietly behind his metallic mask over his nose and mouth, due to his extremely mana-sensitive nose his acary baggy eyes narrowing on the 2 teams of 4
Tatsumi: He leans on Akari’s shoulder his arm wrapping her shoulder as he leans in squinting through his glasses “Hmmm this is a awesome fight they need to fight and stop talking”
Mari Ishida: She stands next to Kei and her hand in her pocket she raises one hand and point at Kanae “Wow Kei is it me or ain’t Kanae-Sama more pretty today?” She says flatly her cute small eyebrows raise
Kei: He grunts in annoyance “Augh I guess..”
Meanwhile Ippei Izawa He looks down at the fight with a calm glare standing next to the leader of the Japanese S-Rank team commander Goto Ryuji who seem more interested in Jinwoo
Goto Ryuji in his head (“Hmmm I wonder why people think he’s a mage class he definitely does not looking a mage…”)
Meanwhile the fight below starts THE BUILDING SHAKES AS THE TEAMS OF 4 BURST AT EACH OTHER Cha Hae-In is overwhelming Kanae with overwhelming sword strikes and Kanae’s red calm eyes go big in shock she mutters “WHA- impossible she’s so fast! Is this why they..Call her the dancer! She’s so fast Whaa UAGH!” Cha stuns her guard and zips behind her and taps her shoulder Knocking Kanae out the fight Cha: “Sorry”
Kanae whimpers holding her arm* “Damn it”
Meanwhile Ma Dongwook’s huge muscular build shakes the ground as him and Kenzo go fist for fist they’re knuckles collide the size difference is noticeable Ma Dongwook towers over Kenzo but amazingly Kenzo is keeping up as the sound of speed punches collide, Ma Dongwook grins wildly
Ma Dongwook: Smiling “OH YES NOW THIS IS WHAT I LIKE I’LL SHOW YOU THAT SIZE DOES MATTER IN THE WITS OF POWER!”
Meanwhile Kenzo looks up at him they’re fists still collide “Hmm this is fun old man” He grins slowly
While Minoru and Lim are having a flash fight they’re skinny smaller bodies compared to the muscular giant they’re fighting fast dashing at the speed of sound around the stone arena they don’t speak due to the concentration however Lim thinks to himself (“Damn this guy is fast”) he dashed at Minoru*
Meanwhile Baek is fighting Atsushi and Baek is getting agitated by his running Baek’s hair is turning white and beast like as his pupils turn to slits he roars “ARE YOU JUST GOING TO KEEP RUNNING!”
Atsushi: His one eye goes big “Shit this guy is scary!” He dodges his one eye starting to glow red out of annoyance

He is also the main protagonist of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok.
Appearance
Suho is a tall, handsome, and muscular young man with gray eyes and black hair, both of which he inherited from his father. His facial features closely resemble his mother's and share the same softer traits. When using his powers or experiencing intense emotions, his eyes glow purple. Personality
Suho is an assertive individual who is defined by his drive to become stronger, a trait that he shares with his father. He has also has a strong sense of justice, as demonstrated when he impulsively attacked the Hyena Guild after witnessing them kidnapping innocent people. However, unlike his father, Suho is more of a team player and is willing to form alliances with his father's former enemies in order to achieve his goals. He also sees the other future Monarchs as friends and genuinely cares for their well-being, as displayed when he hastily apologized to Gray for unintentionally overworking him.
It should be noted that despite sharing his father's desire for power, Suho's drive to become stronger comes from his wish to reunite with his parents after they abruptly vanished from his life when he was a child. Despite the fact that they basically abandoned him, Suho doesn't resent them for leaving him behind, especially after he found out the truth about why they left him from Beru, and rarely ever wastes a chance to hone his skills and become stronger so that they can eventually see them again.
Before he became a hunter, Suho was somewhat insecure. This came from being bullied in school for being abandoned by his parents and lacking the strength to fight back against his classmates who'd awakened as hunters. He had also a fascination with ants due to his childhood friendship with Beru and retained his interest in them even after Jinwoo erased his memories. This led to continue drawing them for fun even during his college years and make sure not to accidentally step on any ants that he encountered as a child.[10] ADVERTISEMENT
Abilities
As the son of the Shadow Monarch, Suho is one of the strongest humans alive. By the time he was in high school, he had already far surpassed the average S-Rank Hunter in power and was so strong by that point that only Jinwoo could defeat him in an one-on-one fight. However, as powerful as he is, he has yet to reach his full potential. Most of his powers were also sealed away when he was a toddler, meaning that he must train to regain them all.
Immense Strength: In the Tutorial, his temporary strength has reached an insane level from reaching level 99, as a testament to this, he overpowered Bellion during their first fight[11] and even managed to hold on his own against his father for a brief period of time. He was also able to climb the floors of the Demon Castle at a significantly faster pace than Jinwoo did during his time as the Player of the System, despite having no soldiers to assist him, and kill Vulcan with just a few blows.[12] Meeting Ammut, Suho would undergo intense training, tearing and healing torn muscles,[13] building up a strong vessel, leading to him ultimately transcending his physical limits. Immense Speed: Suho has exceptional speed and agility, as demonstrated by his ability to keep pace with his father's rapid movements during their brief confrontation during the Tutorials, before being overpowered. In the Light Novel In Chapter 269, Suho surpasses the speed of sound. When focusing his power in an instant, time around him appears to slow to a crawl, allowing him to perceive details previously unnoticed. Immense Durability: Suho is extraordinarily durable. This trait was tremendously enhanced after becoming an Awakened Being and further strengthened through continuous leveling via the System. His resilience was forged through Ammut’s brutal training, which repeatedly broke and healed his body. This resilience allowed him to endure the burning of the Dragon King’s Heart and contain its destructive energy until he fully contained its power at Level 100. His trials prepared him to withstand Spiritual Body Manifestation without breaking. Combat Mastery: Despite lacking formal training, Suho is highly skilled at hand-to-hand combat. He is also proficient with weapons such as swords and daggers, though he prefers fighting with his bare hands. Accelerated Development: Like his father, Suho possesses an extraordinary explosive growth rate and can significantly increase his strength through intensive training over a short period of time. Fire Magic: Suho can generate red and black flames and infuse them into his attacks, drastically increasing the amount of damage that he can deal to his opponents. Monster Language Fluency: Suho can speak and understand monster tongue, which he uses to communicate with his shadow soldiers, his other future Monarchs, and the enemy monsters that he encounters in battle. Skills
Passive Skills
Longevity: Suho is immune to all diseases, poisons, and any abilities that can be harmful to his status. His regeneration speed is also far faster than a normal human's and increases exponentially when he sleeps.[14] Detoxification: Similar to his father, Suho's body automatically purges any detected poisons from his bloodstream. Unfortunately, alcohol is also classified as a poison, preventing him from getting drunk. Tenacity: Suho's physical defense is increased by 160%, making it harder to beat him down in battle.[15] Martial Arts: If Suho fights hand-to-hand, any damage he inflicts on his opponent will be increased by 33%.[16] Increased Strength: Suho's physical strength is increased by 20%.[17] Advanced Dagger Techniques: If Suho uses his daggers in battle, any damage he inflicts on his opponent will be increased by 33%.[18] Gluttony: A blessing After Esil became the new Queen of Demons and the Monarch of Gluttony, This skill enhances his ability to refine the world's "nutrients" when leveling up, boosting absorption rate to 300%.[19] Nightmare of The World Tree: Suho is highly resistant to the life-draining effects of the World Tree.[20] The Shadow of the World Tree (Lv. Max): This enigmatic skill allows Suho to spread his shadow and forcibly halt time, granting him access to the World of Nothingness, a realm even the Shadow Monarch cannot enter. It activates automatically within a Deceased Monarch’s Sanctuary. The skill also enables deceased Monarchs to observe and occasionally interact with Suho during related events. Additionally, it allows Suho to connect with the residual soul flow of the fallen World Tree, known as the "Shadow of the World Tree." Active Skills
Poison: Suho is immune to all types of poison and can reproduce any poison he ingests and use it in battle against his opponents. Frigid Blizzard: Suho can create blizzards out of thin air. This skill also applies a debuff to his opponents that reduces their movement and attack speed. Elf's Steps: By applying mana to the soles of his feet, Suho can make sure that he doesn't leave any tracks or footprints on any form of terrain. In one instance, this ability even allowed him to walk on the Sea of The afterlife. Bloodlust: Suho can magically intimidate an opponent into submission, inducing intense fear into those who are targeted by this technique and decreasing their stats by 50%. It can also be used on multiple opponents at once. Grassland Gale: Suho can increase his speed by 30% for a short period of time. Slaughter: Suho can unleash a barrage of high-speed slashes that are so fast that they are invisible to the naked eye. Storm Slash: Suho can generate fierce winds around his sword, enabling him to cut down multiple opponents at once over a wide area.[21] Storm of Black Flames: Evolution of Storm Slash. The flames from the Dragon's heart caused a mutation in some of his skills causing the fierce wind of storm slash and the highly compressed black flames of the dragon king to mix with the skill each forming a raging storm of black flames. Iron Body Reinforcement: Suho can drastically increase his attack and defense power. This skill also significantly strengthens his soul, making him virtually immune to any kind of life-draining debuffs. When activated, black armor partially covers his body, particularly his arms, acting as gauntlets, he can also apply this skill to weapons, a level of mastery that not even Ammut or Tarnak could reach.[22] Giant's Armor: Suho can grow about twice as big in physical size. This skill also moderately increases his defense power. which creates magical armor that enlarges his body. This ability later evolved when infused with flames from Antares' Dragon Heart.[23] Ruler's Authority: Suho can move and control objects via telekinesis.[15] Shadow Extraction: Suho can extract shadows from the corpses of his enemies and add them to his army.[15] Form Change: Suho can reshape his shadow soldiers into any form that he desires.[24] Shadow Preservation: Suho can preserve his shadows in storage and monitor them by perceiving their senses. Shadow Exchange: Suho can use shadows as portals to travel vast distances in an instant.[25] Monarch's Domain: Suho can increase the strength of all active shadow soldiers by 50% in battle. Unlike his father's version, Suho's skill is infused with flames due to inheriting some of Antares' powers. Spiritual Body Manifestation: Suho acquired this skill fighting the Apostle of Conquest, becoming donned in a shadow armor, This pure white energy, formed from intensely condensed flames of destruction from the Dragon King's Heart, turning from black flames to pure white flames envelops his entire body and radiates outward like a volcano on the verge of eruption. it could be enhanced with Iron Body Technique, leading to an even stronger vessel. Bond Skills
Beast Possession: By magically fusing with Gray, Suho's strength and speed are both significantly enhanced. This skill also boosts his senses to animalistic levels, making it easier for him to dodge incoming attacks, and causes him to undergo a slight transformation, with white hair, white claws, wolf-like ears, and golden-black armor on his forearms.[16] Demon Strike: Suho infuses charged energy supplied to him by Esil into his body, drastically enhancing the destructive power of his next attack.[26] This energy is red and black in color, completely covers one of his forearms almost like a layer of armor, and causes his entire body to glow bright red while this skill is active.[27] Spirit Armament: This bonding ability was acquired from Sirka. By sacrificing spirits, this ability temporarily improves shadow warriors; the qualities and degree of improvement vary according to the kind and quantity of spirits employed. Some might even acquire elemental affinities, which would give them more advantages. Exclusive Skills
Shadow Creation: A transformation type skill, that allows Suho to turn a shadow into an item based on his imagination. the items that can be created are shadow items, however if a item is made from a shadow soldier the item cants revert back to a soldier. Fruit of the World Tree: A unique skill Suho gained from the Shadow of the World Tree. It mimics the World Tree’s method of making "fruits", by extracting "nutrients" properties from dead souls and reconstructing them to create tools, following a process of purification, compression, crystallization, and extraction to form Rune Stones. This technique works even on Apostles, who cannot be turned into Shadow Soldiers, though it places great strain on the user. Suho learned this principle and can now imitate the World Tree’s function through this technique.[28] Job Skills
Breath of Destruction: The special skill that he obtained as the successor of the Dragon Monarch. Suho learned it from Antares while he fights Baran for his third Draconic Trial as part of his job change task. Allows him to fire a truly gob-smacking level of power, unleashing blinding torrents of fire from either his mouth or from the palms of his hands with an attack capable of traveling at the speed of light. It would also allow him to 'purify' the mana contamination from certain monsters and successfully turn them into shadow soldiers

Sung Jinwoo (성진우) is the main protagonist of Solo Leveling. He is the strongest hunter in the world and the second Shadow Monarch, having inherited the position from his predecessor Ashborn.
Originally an infamously weak E-Rank Hunter, Jinwoo got the chance of a lifetime when he was selected as the Player of the System, giving him the unique ability to grow in strength without restraint. As a result, by taking advantage of the opportunities offered to him by the System, Jinwoo eventually rose to power as humanity's greatest hunter.
ADVERTISEMENT Appearance
Jinwoo is a tall, handsome, and muscular young man with gray eyes, sharp facial features, and black hair with bangs that dangle all the way down to his eyes. When using his powers or feeling intense emotions, his eyes glow purple and his facial features become more pronounced. He favors dark clothing and often seen in sleek and stylish outfits ranging from tailored suits to long hooded coats. After defeating the Monarchs in the revised timeline created by the Cup of Reincarnation, he also starts wearing a black glove on his left hand to cover up the burn scars that he received there during his rematch with Antares.[5]
Before he was chosen as the Player of the System, Jinwoo had a very different appearance. He was shorter and had a noticeably thinner physique, with long, bushy hair that covered up his ears. His face was very boyish, which made him look even younger than his sister Jinah (who was still a teenager at the time), and he tended to dress in casual attire, favoring a simple blue hoodie and jeans. It was also common to see him wearing bandages on his arms and legs due to the frequent injuries that he received on raids. ADVERTISEMENT
Personality
Jinwoo is a humble and benevolent individual who cares deeply for his family and has an ardent desire to become stronger. As a result, he shares a close relationship with his sister and his mother, and rarely wastes an opportunity to refine his skills and gain more power. His deep bond with his family also makes him absolutely merciless towards anyone who dares to hurt them, as displayed when he massacred Groctar and his minions for attempting to kill Jinah, and murdered Hwang Dongsoo for torturing Jinho.
It should be noted that despite being the strongest hunter in the world, Jinwoo is not particularly arrogant and is both polite and easygoing in-person. He is also mostly indifferent to materialistic desires and can be very selfless, as displayed when he teleported to Jeju Island without a second thought to save the other Korean S-Rank Hunters from certain death. In battle, however, he is ruthless, as he tends to slaughter his enemies indiscriminately, and even somewhat disdainful, as displayed when he taunted the Ant King by calling him a "mere insect" and mocked Kandiaru for the flaws he made in his design of the System.
In contrast, back when he was weak, Jinwoo was very timid and insecure due to his incompetence as a hunter and his troubled financial situation. Although he cared deeply for his family and spent years risking his life going on raids for their sake, he was secretly ashamed of his circumstances, as displayed when he lied to Joohee about why he had chosen hunting as his career path. However, his traumatizing experience in the Double Dungeon would give him everything he needed to become stronger, and being betrayed and left to die by his fellow hunters while trapped inside the dungeon would teach him the harsh lesson that his kindness could be exploited by others for their own benefit. As a result, from that point on, Jinwoo vowed to never again recklessly endanger his own life under the guise of the greater good and adopted a more self-preserving stance as a hunter, primarily focusing on amassing strength and eventually growing into the fearsome warrior that he is today. Abilities
As the second Shadow Monarch, Jinwoo is the strongest hunter in the world and one of the strongest beings in existence.
Immeasurable Strength: Jinwoo possesses tremendous amounts of physical strength. Even before obtaining his true power, he was strong enough to critically damage the Statue of God with just a few punches to its face and beat Thomas Andre, one of the five National Level Hunters, to the brink of death with just his bare hands. Upon being revived by Ashborn and receiving the full extent of the Shadow Monarch's powers, Jinwoo's strength was increased to the point that he was able to effortlessly repel Sillad's attacks with one hand, kill Rakan in just four blows, and hold his own against Antares, the strongest and oldest of the nine Monarchs, in battle. After spending 27 years waging war against the Monarchs in the revised timeline, Jinwoo has appeared to have grown even more powerful than before, as shown by how he was able to kill Antares completely by himself instead of having to rely on the Rulers for support.[6] Immeasurable Speed: Jinwoo is unfathomably fast and can move at speeds so great that most opponents are unable to track his movements. As a testament to this, he was agile enough to keep up with Sillad's attacks during their second confrontation and upon obtaining his true power, was able to strike at Rakan with such speed that the latter didn't even realize that he'd been attacked until after Jinwoo cut off one of his legs. Immense Durability: Jinwoo is incredibly resilient to physical damage. He was virtually unharmed when the Ant King punched him in the face, only sustaining a small cut on his lip, and was physically unscathed after Baran smashed him into the ground with great force. Combat Mastery: Jinwoo is a master of melee-based combat and his fighting skills are so refined that he can hold his own against enemies with far more combat experience than he does with little trouble. This was first demonstrated during his battle with Kandiaru in the Double Dungeon; despite the fact that his opponent had been alive for hundreds of years and fought against numerous opponents in his time, Jinwoo was still able to match him in battle and eventually overpower him altogether. Later on, Jinwoo was also able to keep up and defend from Sillad's attacks, despite the fact that the latter had his Spiritual Body Manifestation activated and eons of fighting experience under his belt, and probably would've been able to land a killing blow had Rakan not ambushed him from behind. Agelessness: As an effect of having inherited Ashborn's powers, Jinwoo no longer ages naturally and has to biologically alter his body to look the age he wants.[7] As a result, by the end of the series, he only appears to be in his thirties when he has actually been alive for over 80 years. Accelerated Development: Jinwoo's most astonishing ability is his explosive growth rate, a power unlike any other in the world. Not only does he grow stronger with every battle, but he also receives a massive boost in strength with each victory that he achieves. As a result of this, it only took him a few months of intensive training with the System to become one of the strongest hunters in Asia. Umbrakinesis: Jinwoo possesses absolute control over shadows and darkness, and can reshape them into any form he desires, as displayed when he created a layer of black armor made of shadows onto his body.[8] Memory Manipulation: Jinwoo can manipulate the memories of other humans to a certain extent by making physical contact with them. So far, he has been shown to be able to erase certain memories from their minds, grant them their memories of the original timeline, and allow them to see into his own memories, as he did with Woo Jinchul to inform him of the existence of the Rulers and the Monarchs. Hypnosis: Jinwoo can hypnotize people into following the orders that he gives them by snapping his fingers, as displayed when he hypnotized Kim Chul into letting him go and becoming a better person when they encountered each other in the new timeline. [9] However, since he has only ever been shown using this ability once, the limitations to it remain unknown. Gate Creation: Jinwoo can open gates to other worlds. These gates are black and purple in color, and he can open numerous gates at the same time. Unlimited Inventory: Jinwoo can store an unlimited number of items in his shadow and extract any number of those items for his own use at any point in time. Monster Language Fluency: Jinwoo can speak and understand monster tongue, which he uses to communicate with his shadow soldiers and the enemy monsters that he encounters in battle. Indomitable Will: Due to his loving relationship with his family and his intense drive to become strong for their sake, Jinwoo has an extraordinary level of willpower. He has exemplified this trait even before he became the Player of the System, as shown by how he spent four years going on dungeon raids to financially support both his sister and his mother even though he nearly died on almost every raid he ever went on. Jinwoo's resolve to continuously put his life as risk for the welfare of his family was also ultimately the reason why Ashborn selected him as his successor, as he knew that Jinwoo would never quit fighting for his family no matter how high the odds were stacked against him.[10] ADVERTISEMENT
Skills
Passive Skills
Will To Recover: Jinwoo can regenerate from any kind of damage done to his body with the exception of fatal wounds, such as being stabbed through the heart. This also includes lost limbs, as shown by how Jinwoo was able to completely regenerate his right leg after he lost it during the first Double Dungeon Incident.[11] Longevity: Jinwoo is immune to all diseases, poisons, and any abilities that can be harmful to his status. His regeneration speed is also far faster than a normal human's and increases exponentially when he sleeps.[11] Detoxification: Jinwoo's body is able to automatically cleanse itself of any poisons once they are detected in his bloodstream. Unfortunately, alcohol is considered to be a poison and as a result, Jinwoo can't get drunk.[11] Tenacity: If Jinwoo's health drops below 30% in battle, any further damage that he receives will be reduced by 50% in order to keep him alive.[12] Advanced Dagger Techniques: If Jinwoo uses his daggers in battle, any damage he inflicts on his opponent will be increased by 33%.[13] Active Skills
Stealth: Jinwoo can camouflage with his surroundings and hide all traces of his presence, essentially turning himself both physically and magically invisible. Bloodlust: Jinwoo can magically intimidate an enemy combatant into submission, inducing intense fear into those who are targeted by this technique and decreasing their stats by 50%. It can also be used on multiple opponents at once.[14] Quicksilver: Jinwoo can increase his speed by 30% for a short period of time. Mutilation: Jinwoo aims for a target's vital points before slashing away at them with his daggers, inflicting critical damage.[15] Dagger Rush: Jinwoo barrages a target with his daggers from all directions.[16] Ruler's Authority: Jinwoo can move and control objects via telekinesis.[17] He can also use this skill on the air around him, enabling him to move and dodge attacks while airborne. Dragon's Fear: Jinwoo releases a mana-infused shout from his soul, driving anyone weaker than him into a state of intense despair and panic.[18] Job Skills
Shadow Extraction: Jinwoo can extract shadows from the corpses of his enemies and add them into his army.[19] Shadow Preservation: Jinwoo can preserve his shadows in storage and monitor them by perceiving their senses.[20] Shadow Exchange: Jinwoo can use shadows as portals to travel vast distances in an instant.[21] Monarch's Domain: Jinwoo can increase the strength of all active shadow soldiers by 50% in battle

Overview Gallery Cha Hae-In (차해인) is a Korean S-Rank Hunter and the Vice-Guild Master of the Hunters Guild. She is also the wife of Sung Jinwoo and the mother of their son Sung Suho.
Appearance
Hae-In is an attractive young woman with gray eyes and blonde hair in a bob cut. She is short in stature with a slender build and large chest. She typically wears red-themed armor on raids and carries a black sword with a silver hilt. When using her abilities, her eyes glow yellow. Personality
Hae-In is a serious, calm, and caring woman who is known for being very meticulous in her line of work. This is seen by how she patrols the boss' lair during raids to ensure that the mining and hauling squads don't get hurt or killed by the monsters inside the dungeon. She is also diligent in her sword training, having continued to take kendo lessons two years after becoming a S-Rank, and perceptive enough to realize after her first meeting with Sung Jinwoo that there was something about him that wasn't quite right.
Unlike most high-ranking hunters, Hae-In does not show any bias or disdain towards lower-ranking hunters, and behaves in a very humble manner towards everyone she meets in the field regardless of their rank. However, despite how generous she is to other people, Hae-In is socially awkward when it comes to life outside of dungeon raiding. She also doesn't have many friends and is easily flustered, as displayed when she got extremely embarrased when Jinwoo teased her over her pickaxe incident. History
Before Hae-In became a hunter, she was a famous track athlete whose career unfortunately came to an end from a severe ankle injury. At some point after retiring from sports, she awakened and became a hunter, ultimately rising up to become the 9th S-Rank Hunter in Korea and joining the Hunters Guild as its Vice-Guild Master.
During her service in the Hunters Guild, Hae-In was nicknamed "The Dancer" by her teammates from the dance-like movements she made when she swiftly slaughtered monsters with her sword. However, she found that nickname to be embarrassing and later banned her guild members from using it. Hunters Guild Gate Arc
Hae-In is seen participating in a raid on an A-Rank Gate with Choi Jong-In and several other hunters of their guild. After eliminating most of the monsters, partially clearing the dungeon, Hae-In is seen stepping out of the Gate with the rest of her team.[2] As she was passing by the mining team, she sensed a powerful presence, Sung Jinwoo, at first thinking it was Chairman Go Gunhee. But dismissed the thought as the chairman would be too busy to bother her guild.[3]
Later when the mining team was busy harvesting mana crystals. Hae-In, while patrolling the dungeon, noticed Jinwoo who was on the mining team, getting too close to where the dungeon boss was.[4] She warned him not to go near it, as it could awaken the boss and noticed that he had a weapon in his hand. Though, when it quickly vanished, she believed her eyes were mistaken. As Jinwoo apologized as he passed by her, Hae-In got a whiff of his scent, and noted that it wasn't foul smelling. The woman demanded to see his ID, and saw that he was registered as an E-Rank hunter. Hae-In, composing herself, told the miner to return to his team. Wondering if the reason why he didn't smell so bad was due to him being low-ranked. In any case, Hae-In thought he smelled nice for a hunter.
At night, in her apartment, she called an acquaintance at the Korean Hunters Association to get some information on Jinwoo.[5] At first thinking that Jinwoo was a spy from another guild, her contact to her surprise recognized the name of the E-Rank hunter as her superior Jong-In had made similar inquiries the day before. Sadly her contact had no information on Jinwoo as his file in the Association's database was classified. Knowing how suspicious it was for such high level security on a low level hunter, Hae-In believed that there was something more going on. After she ended her call, Hae-In laid in bed thinking of all the hunters, Jinwoo was the only one who smelled nice.[6]
On her day off, Hae-In came to see Jinwoo when he was working as a miner at a A-Rank Gate that was being cleared by her guild. She noticed that he was absent, and wondered where he could be, when Bae Yoon-Suk noticed her and asked what she was doing at the gate. The hunter asked the mining team leader where Jinwoo was, to which he informed her that Jinwoo was serving as a substitute porter for the strike team. This came as a shock to her that an E-Rank hunter would willingly enter an A-Rank Gate. Hae-In remembering how she saw him near the territory of the boss at the previous Gate, suspected there was something going on. She decided to head into the A-Rank Gate herself, but lacking a weapon, she borrowed a miner's pick from Yoon-Suk.[7]
Hae-In finding the corpses of High Orcs wondered how Son Kihoon's party managed to defeat them. Upon sensing a strong waves of mana, Hae-In deduced that they were being produced by a boss. Knowing Kihoon's group would not survive, Hae-In prepared to assist them.[8] The S-Rank Hunter having reached Kargalgan's throne chamber, was met with a sight of Jinwoo's summons slaughter the High Orcs. She noticed Kihoon and his party, and asked what was going on though they were just as confused as her. When Kargalgan began to empower himself to confront Jinwoo himself, Hae-In ordered her juniors to flee.[9]
Woo Jinchul and several agents from the Korean Hunters Association arrived witnessing Jinwoo's Shadows fight amongst the High Orcs, Hae-In informed them that they were summons of Jinwoo. The female Hunter noticing that Jinchul recognized Jinwoo. Confirming her suspicions that he, like her guildmaster were aware of Jinwoo. While they watched Jinwoo fight against Kargalgan, she took the opportunity to ask about Jinwoo, but Jinchul confessed he knew very little about the strange Hunter. After Kargalgan was defeated, Hae-In and the gathered Hunters expressed shock at seeing Jinwoo use his power to turn the High Orc shaman into one of his Shadows, naming him Tusk.
Shortly then Jinwoo was escorted away by Jinchul and the members of the Association. Hae-In had wanted to speak with Jinwoo but lost her chance, when Lee Bora asked her why she was carrying a pick axe. This made her wonder if Jinwoo had thought she was weird for carrying, much to Bora's puzzlement.[10]
Jeju Island Arc
In preparation for the Jeju Island Raid Party, all of the Korean S-Rank Hunters began training at the gym of the Korean Hunters Association. Hae-In who was resting at the side with Lim Tae-Gyu noticed Jinwoo on the balcony with Gunhee and Jong-In and noticed that the air around the new S-Rank Hunter was different. Due to the large number of powerful Hunters, Hae-In found the smell to be unbearable making her cover her nose with a handkerchief.[11]
She later participated in a mock battle with Tae-Gyu, Dongwook, Yoonho against the members of Draw Sword Guild. While her fellow S-Rank Hunters were being defeated one by one by the Japanese Hunters, Hae-In easily defeated Kanae Tawata and moved onto assist Yoonho, when she was intercepted by Atsushi Kumamoto. Hae-In sensed him approaching from behind and instinctively attacked him, punching him fourteen times drawing blood. This unfortunately caused the Japanese Hunter to go berserk and act with murderous intent. Hae-In's fight with Kumamoto was interrupted by Jinwoo who chastised the two for getting carried away reminding them it was a mock battle.[12]
After this Goto Ryuji challenged Jinwoo to a mock duel, which the Korean Hunter accepted. Hae-In and the other S-Rank Hunters watched from the sidelines. She was initially worried if Jinwoo would be fine fighting against the strongest Hunter in Japan, though remember Jinwoo had recently defeated an A-Rank Boss and a hundred High Orcs. Hae-In was asked by Yoonho if she was fine being around so many Hunters, which the female S-Rank Hunter stated that she couldn't keep covering her nose all the time, especially at Jeju Island. Hae-In asked that since Yoonho was an acquaintance of Jinwoo, then why was he not stopping him from fighting? The other Hunter told her normally he would, but he like Hae-In was interested in seeing Jinwoo fight against Goto.
While watching the fight against the two men, Dongwook commented that it seems that Jinwoo was hanging in there against Goto when avoiding his attacks which was impressive. Hae-In though correctly saw that Jinwoo was not simply hanging in the fight, but forcing Goto to intensify his attacks. The fight became more intense when Goto started launching attacks with the intent for fatal injury, but were easily countered by Jinwoo. The heightened aggression of attacks then caused both Hunters to go for the kill. Both Hae-In and Yoonho saw this and quickly restrained Jinwoo, while Goto was restrained by his teammates to prevent an international incident.[13]
At the time of the raid, Hae-In was onboard a tandem-rotor aircraft with the other Korean S-Rank Hunters and cameraman who was an A-Rank Hunter and sent to film the Hunters raid at Jeju Island. Hae-In asked Yoonho if he had met with Jinwoo before boarding the aircraft but was informed that he did not. Later she watched Jong-In clear the drop site of area of Ants, allowing her and the other Hunters to jump out and begin the raid to kill the Ant Queen in the mountain.[14]
After Jong-In casted a fire barrier to the entrance of the nest to prevent the Ants from coming to the Ant Queens aid, Hae-In and the S-Rank Hunters found the egg chamber. Before Jong-In could cast a spell to incinerate the eggs, Hae-In pointed out an unusually large hatched egg. While it indicated that a powerful Ant was loose on the island, the Hunters agreed to focus on defeating the queen.[15]
Hae-In and the raid party later defeated several Royal Guards of the Ant Queen. She and the Hunters were then refreshed with a healing spell by Min Byung-Gyu The group continued on deeper into the nest slaughtering any guards they found. Hae-In soon detected a strong smell of mana which she deduced to be the Ant Queen and her guards. Yoonho confirmed this that only eight guards were with the queen which was perfect for them. Hae-In and her comrades pushed forward to defeat the last obstacles to the boss. During the fight she witnessed Yoonho transform into his beast form.[16]
While her comrades fought the Ant Queen, Hae-In kept the Royal Guards busy. Once she took care of them, she joined the fight and beheaded the Ant Queen. They soon were alerted that the Ants on the island had sensed the Ant Queen's death and were returning back to the nest. This shocked Hae-In and her team as the Japanese Hunters should have been guarding their rear to allow for their escape. The Hunters were not trapped, but the worse was when the sensed the powerful presence of the Ant King who arrived.[17]
In the face of the menacing aura produced by the Ant King, Hae-In collapsed to her knees as it became too much for her mana sensitivity. The Ant King inspected the corpse of the Ant Queen, then roared in fury to the apprehension of the Hunters. Hae-In who was struggling to stand was targeted by the monster, who at blinding speeds punched her in the ribs, causing her to crash into a cave wall before the Ant King turned its attentions on the rest of her fellows.[18] The blow rendered Hae-In unconscious leaving the other Hunters to contend with the Ant King. The Ant King later abandoned the attack on the Korean Hunters, after sensing Goto outside the nest. Dongwook carried the injured Hae-In on his back whilst Jong-In attempt to protect the rest of them with a fire barrier to hold back the incoming horde of Ants entering the chamber. They were assisted by a Shadow Knight that was hiding in Yoonho's shadow and called for aid from Jinwoo.[19]
Jinwoo arrived shortly after via Shadow Exchange and summoned several of his Shadows to wipe away the attacking Ants. He then gave several bottles of healing potions for the surviving S-Rank Hunters to recover from their injuries. Hae-In who was put on the ground by Dongwook was still unconscious as her injuries were too severe for the healing potions. They needed to evacuate the nest before Hae-In grew anymore weaker, but where halted by the appearance of the returning Ant King.[20]
Once the Ant King was defeated by Jinwoo, the Hunter attended to Hae-In who was close to death. To save her life, Jinwoo used his power to turn Byung-Gyu into a Shadow to utilize his healing magic.[21] Hae-In life was saved and at Yoonho's plea Jinwoo terminated his contract with Byung-Gyu to allow his soul to rest. Hae-In who was still asleep was carried by Dongwook to the aircraft transport that came to extract the Hunters.[22]
Recruitment Arc
After the Jeju Island Raid, Hae-In is seen at a Kumdo school training under Song Chi-Yul.[23]
Ahjin Guild Arc
Hae-In came to visit Jinwoo's guild office to join his guild. The request puzzled Jinwoo since Hae-In was already in a prestigious guild. When he stated that the name of the guild is Solo Player, she found lt weird. Jinwoo tried to talk her out of leaving the Hunters Guild, as it would breach her contract. But Hae-In was sure of her decision, confident she had enough money to pay for the breach in penalty. She even was fine with less pay at the newfound guild.
As it turns out, her real intentions for joining the guild was to get closer to Jinwoo, having developed an attraction to him. Upon awakening and being taken to the aircraft transpoTy she was met by Gunhee who informed her she was being transferred to the hospital and that Jinwoo was the one who had saved her. Being brushed with death caused Hae-In to consider more about her personal feelings with Jinwoo as someone she wanted to be by her side to the end. However she could not reveal this to Jinwoo, being too embarrassed by his possible rejection of her. Jinwoo was oblivious to her feelings thought perhaps she was tired at her guild and decided to at least let her go through his guild's entrance exam which involved defeating one of his summoned beasts.[24]
Since the facilities at the Hunter's Association would be more suitable, Jinwoo took Hae-In there using his Shadow Exchange. Hae-In though did not have a weapon, causing Jinwoo to ask if it was that pickaxe she was wielding last time they met, causing her to be flustered. A substitute was found in the spare weapons at the gym. Jinwoo then selected Igris to be her opponent with the knight wielding Baran's sword. He didn't choose Beru, because he thought the ant would give her trauma. The duel with Igris ended in Hae-In's victory. Hae-In finding the fight easy wanted Jinwoo to summon Beru.
At the start of their duel, Beru attempted to land a sneak attack, the same way he did to her when he was alive on Jeju Island. Hae-In having learned from her previous experience managed to block him. However Beru still managed to best her in the fight, dodging all her attacks and pushing her back with a roar. Jinwoo gave her the option of pulling out, but Hae-In insisted that they continue. Beru's attack then grew more aggressive, feeling insulted for Hae-In not recognizing the differences in strength. Hae-In kept her distance from Beru's attacks and tried to launch her own attack using her skill Sword Dance. Her blade shattered when it made contact with Beru's body but she used Sword of Light to recreate her weapon. She succeeded in piercing Beru, though it caused the Shadow to revert to his primal instinct and crave to annihilate her.
Hae-In was saved thanks to Jinwoo intervening. After scolding Beru, Jinwoo then asked again why Hae-In was pushing herself to go such lengths to join his guild. The female hunter remained silent to his queries, until he asked if she was interested in him, to which she said yes, blushing.[25]
Later Hae-In in her apartment was rolling around in her bed, chiding herself for revealing to Jinwoo that she thinks she likes him. Evidently after he learned this, Jinwoo rejected her request to join his guild. She felt embarrassed by the whole situation. Though reasons to herself her interest in Jinwoo makes sense since he saved her, but then second guesses herself wailing everything is not alright. While thinking about Jinwoo's role in preventing her from dying at Jeju Island, Hae-In admits that her survival was technically due to Min Byung-Gyu's healing abilities. Just as she thinks about the deceased Byung-Gyu, she suddenly recalls a vague memory of when she was unconscious. It was in an abyss where her soul was floating, with the shadow of Byung-Gyu holding unto her hand. The deceased hunter implored Hae-In to tell Jinwoo to be careful with his powers that lie within him.[26]
While checking on social media, Hae-In saw the photo of Yoo Soohyun posing with Jinwoo and Yoo Jinho announcing the formation of Ahjin Guild. This causes her to shake in anger at the picture.[27]
Double Dungeon Arc
Hae-In later came to the parking lot of the building where the Ahjin Guild was located. Jinwoo who was just pulling in his truck, noticed Hae-In, though she tried to hide her face and discretely walk away. Jinwoo though caught up with her asking why she was running away from him. Initially at a loss for words, Hae-In then told him that she left her car in the parking lot, last time she came to the guild, which was true. Hae-In though had other reasons for approaching Jinwoo, wishing to speak with him in private. Personally she had questions on Soohyun, such as what she was to Jinwoo. But in the end she relayed the message from Byung-Gyu. Jinwoo hearing this immediately took her inside the guild office.
The emptiness of the office, caused Hae-In to ask about it, and was told that the vice guildmaster was out on business. The fact that she was alone with Jinwoo flustered the female S-Rank hunter. Back on Byung-Gyu's message, Hae-In told Jinwoo about her memory of seeing the soul of Byung-Gyu, of how the deceased hunter described being made into a Shadow and became totally unnaturally loyal to Jinwoo. Byung-Gyu had told her to warn Jinwoo about his powers and also a mention of his true army.
After her meeting with Jinwoo, Hae-In returned to her apartment to take a bath. Unknown to her Jinwoo through a Shadow assigned to her, he accidentally peeped on her naked body.[28]
Later when word was received from Jinwoo that a Double Dungeon had appeared at a C-Rank Gate and was entering it alone, the Korean Hunters Association sent out a call for aid from the top guilds, which the Hunters Guild responded to. Hae-In was among the hunters that agreed to investigate the dungeon.[29]
Hae-In and her guildmates led by Jong-In and Jinchul arrived in front of the mysterious doors leading into the Double Dungeon. She sensed that the mana behind the doors was not Jinwoo's. Upon opening the doors, the group were shocked to see that the rumored dungeon was exactly as described with giant statues and a strange chamber. But were more shocked when the met the Architect who proceeded to kill her fellow hunters and declared that they would be sacrifices to the new king.[30] The statue was able to kill multiple enemies in a single dash, she tried facing it head on, even with her Sword Dance skill, she is utterly been outclassed by the Architect's superior combat experience.
Monarchs War Arc
While training in swordplay with Chi-Yul, Hae-In received a call from Jinwoo asking if she wanted to hang on, which she accepted. The two then went to an amusement park, where due to their identities caused a stir among many visitors at the park. Hae-In asked Jinwoo why he wanted her to come with him, to which he stated that she was his only friend, citing how he heard he declaration when she tried to rescue him in the Double Dungeon. Hae-In face turned red at realizing he heard her. On the topic of the Double Dungeon, she tried to inquire what exactly happened there, though Jinwoo was vague on the matter, but promised to tell her some other time when he could fully process the events that transpired there.
The couple were soon surrounded by eager fans of theirs, but were kept at bay thanks to Jinwoo's Shadow Knights, allowing the two to enjoy their time at the park. The leisure time was enjoyed by Hae-In, having not recalled when she had some fun. Due to the rides being slower compared to what she experienced as a Hunter, Jinwoo took her on a ride upon Kaisel and then a quiet night out observing the stars.[31]
The two having spent the night under the sky in the woods, then head to a hotel for a meal using Kaisel to take them. While having a meal, Jinwoo received a call from Jinchul alerting him that a powerful humanoid beast was laying waste to the area just outside the Korean Hunters Association in Seoul.[32]
Hae-In observed Jinwoo's battle against the Monarchs in Seoul via a live broadcast, and was horrified to see him seemingly killed, having been fatally impaled.[33]
Final Battle Arc
Shortly after Jinwoo killed the three Monarchs who came after him, Hae-In stood ready in Seoul, along side a massive army of Hunters assembled from all around the world, to confront whatever danger that stepped out of the massive Gate hanging over the city.[34]
After Antares and his dragons wiped out Canada and was slowly making his way towards the USA, Hae-In was seen at a airfield with several Hunters being deployed to reinforce the frontlines in North America. She received a call from Jinwoo with both acknowledging that they had been busy to see each other. Before ending the call, Hae-In made Jinwoo promise her that they would meet again in the future.[35]
On the battlefield, Hae-In was seen standing atop a pile of monsters she slayed with several other Hunters.[36] After the death of Antares, Hae-In was fighting the Monarch's remaining forces, fatally impaling a monster in the neck in one battle.[37]
Epilogue
Hae-In whilst fighting the Monarchs monsters in the streets, witnessed the brilliant light of the Rulers activation of the Cup of Reincarnation. As the light engulfed the world, time rewound ten years prior before the appearance of the Gates on Earth.[38]
In the new timeline Hae-In lost all her memories as a Hunter. Jinwoo who had returned to Earth after defeating all the Monarchs, caught sight of Hae-In walking past the ice cream shop where he was having a meeting with the representative of the Rulers. The two briefly shared a glance with one another, with Jinwoo fulfilling the promise with her and leading him to eventually reestablish of his relationship with her in his new life on Earth.[39]
During her youth on the preliminaries that she won at the cost of straining her leg, frustrated by her situation, she eventually met Sung Jinwoo, despite her memories being erased, her mana sensitivity is still functional as his scent more fragrant like before, after Jinwoo heals her leg, she asked as if she met him before, which Jinwoo replied to make a bet if she win against him, which she agreed as they spend a lot of time together.
Several years later, Jinwoo and Hae-In were married, as well giving birth to their son, Sung Suho, it is implied that he gave her back her old memories during their dates, which she exhaustedly explained of his shadows' argument of Suho's future, mainly Igris and Bellion.

Abilities
Hae-In is one of the strongest S-Rank Hunters in Korea, with Jinwoo initially believing that she could possibly be on the same level of power as Go Gunhee. Goto Ryuji, the greatest hunter in Japan, also considered her competent enough to give his guild's best hunters a run for their money and even the Ant King considered her to be the most dangerous out of all the Korean hunters in the Jeju Island Raid Party, which lead him to attack her first.
In the revised timeline, Hae-In eventually regained her original abilities and successfully killed one of the Apostles, which drastically increased her strength and made her as powerful as a National Level Hunter. It is also revealed that being pregnant with Suho significantly boosted her mana capacity and turned her into a vessel capable of containing his powers, with Hae-In later joking that it was like giving birth to a dinosaur.
Mana Smell: Hae-In is unusually sensitive to the smell of mana, causing hunters and monsters to smell foul to her. Jinwoo is the only known hunter who does not smell bad to her, due to his status as the Player of the System. Sword Mastery: Hae-In is proficient at swordsmanship and is able to come up with creative and unorthodox ways to kill monsters efficiently. Enhanced Strength: Hae-In possesses great physical strength, as displayed when she was was able to easily defeat Igris during their sparring match, punch Kumamoto in the face with enough force to make him bleed, and decapitate the Ant Queen with one swing of her sword. Enhanced Speed: Hae-In can move at great speeds and is well-known amongst the Korean hunting community for how fast she is in battle. She was also able to easily dodge Igris' attacks (whose true power was actually sealed), punch Kumamoto in the face before he could even react, overwhelm Kanae with her movements, and even dodge some of Beru's attacks during their sparring match (although it should be noted that he was holding back). Enhanced Durability: Hae-In possesses great physical durability, as displayed by how she was able to stay alive for a significant amount of time after the Ant King ruptured some of her organs and continue moving at top speed even after Kandiaru sliced through her shoulder. Sword Dance: Hae-In significantly increases her attack speed, giving her dance-like movements. Sword of Light: Hae-In transforms her sword into pure light, significantly increasing her cutting power. Quake of Provocation: Hae-In stabs her sword into the ground, creating a small earthquake that damages any enemies caught in its radius.

Overview Gallery Sung Il-Hwan (성일환) was the father of Jinwoo and Jinah.
Appearance
Il-Hwan was a muscular man with gray eyes, shaggy black hair, and slight facial hair. When using his powers or agitated, his eyes glowed bright yellow. As noted by Hwang Dongsoo, despite having spent a decade inside the dungeons, he did not appear to have aged much during that period of time and looked significantly younger than he actually was.
During his time on the run, Il-Hwan wore a tattered brown cloak over a ragged white undershirt, white bandages on both hands, baggy black pants, and a pair of black boots. In contrast, before he went missing, Il-Hwan sported a much cleaner look and was pictured wearing a brown jacket over a simple black undershirt. Personality
Il-Hwan cared deeply for his family and had little tolerance for those who tried to harm them or interfere with his mission, as displayed when he brutally beat Hwang Dongsoo to a bloody pulp for attempting to murder his son Jinwoo for petty reasons. He was also selfless and merciful, as he went out of his way to save the innocent bystanders who got caught in the crossfire of his battle with Hwang and chose to spare Hwang's life even though he could have easily killed him. History
During his younger years, Il-Hwan worked as a firefighter and fell in love with a woman named Park Kyung-Hye. They eventually married and had two children, Jinwoo and Jinah, whom they deeply adored. Several years later, when the existence of magic beasts was discovered, Il-Hwan left his firefighting career to become a hunter and rose up to become one of Korea's first S-Rank Hunters. However, since the ranking system didn't exist yet at the time, his strength was never officially recognized by the public and he never got the chance to enjoy the privileges that most S-Rank Hunters have in the present day.
Ten years before the events of the main storyline, Il-Hwan got trapped inside a dungeon during a raid, leaving his family to presume him dead and his wife to raise their children on her own. However, before he could die of dehydration or starvation, Il-Hwan was found and saved by the Rulers, who granted him their power and entrusted him with the mission of slaying the new Shadow Monarch, who was soon to be born. As he didn't have a way to escape back home on his own, Il-Hwan had no choice but to accept their demands.[2] Demon Castle Arc
Shortly after Ashborn selected Jinwoo to be his host, the Rulers allowed Il-Hwan to return to the human world to carry out his mission and he resurfaced inside a dungeon on American soil, where he was met by a squad of A-Rank hunters. Believing him to be a monster, they attempted to kill Il-Hwan, but he effortlessly swatted aside their attacks and knocked them all out.[3] The Federal Bureau of Hunters arrested him in the aftermath, but due to his poor English and the fact that a human had never come out of a dungeon before, they suspected him of being a magic beast with the memories of a human and brought in Hwang Dongsoo to interrogate him so they could figure out for sure.[4]
Unfortunately, due to Hwang's antagonistic attitude and the grudge that he had against Jinwoo for murdering his older brother, the interrogation ultimately went south, with Il-Hwan easily defeating him in the ensuing fight and causing an explosion that completely demolished the Bureau's HQ. Realizing that he was better off completing the mission on his own, Il-Hwan warned Hwang never to set foot in Korea again and went on the run.
Ahjin Guild Arc
After luring Sillad to America by deliberately leaving behind traces of his power, Il-Hwan attempted to fight and kill him, only to be forced back by the former's superior strength. Their clash resulted in a massive explosion of energy and although it's not made clear if they continued fighting afterwards, Il-Hwan later escaped the scene unscathed.[5]
Japan Crisis Arc
Several days after the Rulers spawned an S-Rank Gate in Tokyo, Il-Hwan learned that his target would be there and traveled to Japan so that he could finally complete his mission.[6] However, much to his horror, Il-Hwan discovered that Jinwoo was the new Shadow Monarch and could not bring himself to kill his own son.
Fortunately, the Rulers started to have a change of heart and came to accept Jinwoo as their ally, especially after they witnessed him kill Legia. As a result, they eventually gave Il-Hwan the new mission of protecting his son from the Monarchs, which he was more than happy to accept.
International Guild Conference Arc
During their investigation of Christopher Reed's murder, the Bureau discovered mana traces within the ruins of his home that were very similar to Il-Hwan's. As a result, they came to consider him as the primary suspect in Chris' murder and issued a red notice for him during the International Guild Conference, exposing the truth to Jinwoo that his father was still alive.[7]
Monarchs War Arc
When three Monarchs appeared in Seoul to hunt down and kill Jinwoo, Il-Hwan arrived in the city shortly afterwards and watched as Jinwoo engaged them in battle and was ultimately killed by Rakan, but not before taking out Querehsha on his own. The two surviving Monarchs then attempted to finish Jinwoo off for good when the latter's black heart suddenly began to beat and he started breathing again, but before they could deliver the killing blow, Il-Hwan intercepted their attack and slammed his foot into Rakan’s face, sending him flying into Sillad and causing the two of them to crash through several buildings.[8]
Despite being outnumbered 2-1, Il-Hwan was able to gain the upper hand against his adversaries and stall them long enough for Rakan to realize that all was lost and flee the battlefield. Unwilling to accept defeat, Sillad summoned a massive ice storm, which sliced off Il-Hwan's left arm, and attempted to crush both him and Jinwoo with a giant meteor made by ice. Beaten, Il-Hwan prepared for death, but before Sillad could drop the meteor on the city, Beru shattered it in one blow and Jinwoo finally returned from the dead, having been granted the true powers of the Shadow Monarch by Ashborn. Knowing that his son could easily handle the rest, Il-Hwan fled to safety while Jinwoo resumed his battle with Rakan and Sillad, and effortlessly killed them both.[9]
After finding shelter, Il-Hwan realized that he had used too much power in his battle with the Monarchs and his body was literally crumbling away as a result. Accepting his fate and noting to himself that he had done enough, Il-Hwan prepared for the end. However, Jinwoo showed up and asked Il-Hwan why he had just vanished without a word.[10]
With little time left, Il-Hwan recounted to his son as to what happened to him after he got trapped in the dungeons, and how the Rulers had found him and entrusted him with their mission. He then tearfully embraced Jinwoo, noting that he had grown well in his absence, and apologized to his son for not being a better father right before his body dissolved into shards of light and floated away in the wind.
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation one last time at Jinwoo's request, this created a new timeline where humanity never learned of the existence of magic beasts. As a result, in this timeline, Il-Hwan never became a hunter and continued working as a firefighter to support his family.[11] Il-Hwan would later regain his memories of the original timeline several years before Jinwoo waged war against the Monarchs and successfully killed them all, but instead of holding onto them, he had the Rulers erase them from his mind so that he could have a normal life with his family.[12]
Ragnarok
Many years after the final War of the Monarchs, Sung Jinwoo goes missing once again(in reality, fighting the Itarim). It was around this time that he once again regained his memories. Now knowing the true reason for Jinwoo's disappearance, he pacified his family from losing their calm, instead telling them to place their trust in Jinwoo and Hae-In, calmly stating that they would come back. However, his calmness only agitated Suho, Jinwoo's son, who was angry that Il-Hwan was apparently indifferent to it all, leading to their estrangement.
Il-Hwan awakened again 3 years later. After a while, he was kidnapped by the Foreign Religion, who implanted multiple Star Pieces into him to subjugate and possess him. However, Il-Hwan effortlessly shrugged the mental effects of the Star Pieces, instead using them to enhance his already powerful magic power. This only lead his body to further deteriorate with time. When Suho arrived investigating the Foreign Religion, they both teamed up to defeat that sect of the Foreign Religion, eliminating Hwang Dong-Su, who was a high priest and turning him back to Greed. However, Il-Hwan eventually breaks, leading to the formation of a Void Gate. With no choice, they take him to the dimensional gap to keep him stable, allowing him to occasionally return to Earth.
Due to his precarious medical condition, his grandson Suho seeks to gather the ingredients for the Holy Water of Life to cure Il-Hwan.

Abilities
As the vessel of a Ruler, Il-Hwan was one of the strongest hunters in the world and quite possibly the second strongest hunter in existence after Jinwoo. However, unlike his son, his body was not adapted to the powers that the Rulers had granted him and as a result, he died shortly after he overexerted himself in his battle with Sillad and Rakan.
Immense Strength: Il-Hwan possessed immense physical strength. He was strong enough to effortlessly overpower Hwang Dongsoo in battle, leaving the latter with injuries so severe that he took months to fully recover from them, and kick Rakan hard enough in the face to send him flying through several buildings. He was also able to easily stab right through Rakan's upper jaw and incapacitate Sillad for a prolonged period of time just by kicking him in the chin. Immense Speed: Il-Hwan was incredibly fast and could move at immense speeds. He was agile enough to dodge and counter Sillad's and Rakan’s attacks at the same time, and deflect Sillad's barrage of icicles with little trouble. Stealth: Il-Hwan was able to camouflage with his surroundings and hide all traces of his presence, essentially turning himself both physically and magically invisible. Ruler's Authority: Il-Hwan was able to control and move objects via telekinesis

Yoo Jinho (유진호) is a Korean D-Rank Hunter. He is also a famous video game developer and the CEO of Ahjin Soft.[1]
Appearance
Jinho is a young man with gray eyes, a boyish face, and custard-colored hair that is shaved on all sides of his head. Much like Jinwoo, he is usually displayed wearing casual clothing, even on raids.
In the revised timeline, he is shown to have grown older with a more masculine face, a leaner build, and a small amount of facial hair. However, his hairstyle is still the same as it was during his youth and despite being in his forties, he actually has not aged that much and still appears to be more on the young side, with only several small wrinkles on the sides of his face and his mouth. Personality
Jinho comes off as a lovable dork and serves as the comic relief of the series, mainly due to his tendency to take things the wrong way. Despite his comically naive nature, he is very loyal and driven, as he aspired at one point to lead the Yoojin Guild as its guild master and eventually take his father's place in the family business.[2] These traits are also prominent in his relationship with Jinwoo, as he sees the latter as an older brother figure and was even willing to leave his father's side to help him form his own guild.
There are two running gags with Jinho that are seen throughout the series. The first is his odd habit of dressing up in very fancy and expensive, but also useless armor. The second is his inability to hold his liquor, as displayed when he got absolutely wasted while going out for drinks with Jinwoo and then with his cousin Soohyun.[3] History
Dungeon & Lizards Arc
Jinho joined Hwang Dongsuk’s strike team to enter a C-Rank dungeon. Jinho not being originally part of Dongsuk’s team only was permitted to join so as to fill up one of the necessary quotas for a ten man strike team. He met the other recruit, Sung Jinwoo. Seeing that he was only an E-Rank and seem as a joke to the other hunters on the team, Jinho promised to protect Jinwoo if there was trouble.[4]
Before they entered the dungeon, Jinho tried striking up a conversation with Jinwoo, though the latter found him a bit too talkative, and somewhat envious of the other hunter's upbringing, but saw that he was not a bad guy. Jinho confessed that it was his first time delving into a dungeon, and relied on Jinwoo for advice. The team came into a dark tunnel where they faced insect-type magic beasts. Jinho fought against the beasts and afterwards was warned by Jinwoo, detecting something sinister afoot with Dongsuk, to be on guard.[5]
The team then entered deeper into the cave system which was a maze, coming to a webbed area which indicated that they were in the boss's lair. Though close to the lair was a chamber containing a wealth of Mana Crystals. Seeing that the existence of the crystals changed everything, Jinho offered Jinwoo to take a look at his contract. After taking a look at the E-Rank Hunter's contract, Jinho showed Dongsuk and his team that while the contract states only Essence Stones gained in the dungeon would be divided there was nothing stating about other goods. He then inquired why the language was worded that way, with the exception of Mana Crystals.
Dongsuk though put on a warm smile to Jinho, assuring him that they would evenly split the Mana Crystals once the boss, Giant Arachnid Buryura, was taken care of, which was hanging in an overhead cavern asleep. Dongsuk stated that their priority would be to first mine the crystals before taking care of the boss. Lee Chul-Jin though stated that they would need to get their equipment to mine the crystals, so Dongsuk had Jinho and Jinwoo stay behind at the chamber whilst the rest of the other hunters went out to get the gear. Jinho wasn't so sure of this course of action, but Jinwoo stated that it was fine as the boss seemed dormant. However right after Dongsuk and his hunters left the chamber, they sealed the entrance, trapping the young hunters in with the boss.[6]
Now trapped, Jinho realized that Dongsuk and the others planned to kill him and Jinwoo all along to keep the mana crystals for themselves. Worse the explosion made by Dongsuk caused the boss to awaken. Jinho not wanting Jinwoo to be harmed stood in front of the E-Rank Hunter to protect him from the enraged Buryura, though to his dismay Jinwoo decided to engage the giant arachnid. Jinhoo believed Jinwoo was crazy as only a B or C-Rank Hunter could defeat it. However to his shock he saw Jinwoo fight on equal footing to the C-Rank boss.[7]
Jinho seeing Jinwoo's physical speed and abilities were way beyond what was expected, caused the young man to think that his senior was actually a False Ranker and a psychopath who enjoyed killing. The fight and revelation of Jinwoo's abilities caused Jinho to sink to his knees wondering to his father why he came into a dungeon. As the fight continued Jinho was worried that despite Jinwoo's speed, he would run out of stamina before the the boss, but to his shock he witnessed JInwoo slay the giant spider singlehandedly.
The feat confirmed to Jinho that the other Hunter was a False Ranker. To appease Jinwoo and avoid being a target of violence by what he was sure was a psychopathic killer, Jinho, nervously smiling, offered to carry the mana crystals for him. Even offering him water and to do the mining as Jinwoo relaxes.[8]
They were interrupted when Dongsuk and his group unsealed the chamber, surprised that they survived but also that the boss was dead. Due to Jinho's higher standard of equipment, Dongsuk believed that the rookie hunter must have did the deed. Dongsuk then tried to win Jinho over, having done research on his background and his wealthy background, being the son of Yoo Myunghan the CEO of Yoojin Construction. The older hunter offered to let Jinho live, under the condition he kill Jinwoo. Jinho refused the offer to the surprise of Dongsuk and Jinwoo, raising his blade against Dongsuk.
In retaliation, Dongsuk ordered Cho Kyuhwan to attack Jinwoo, striking him with his fireballs and into the cavern wall. Jinho was horrified by this, thinking Jinwoo was dead, and call the other hunters murderers. Though was shocked when Jinwoo rose from the rubble and began to calmly approach the Lizards, proceeding to behead one of them with ease before turning to focus on the rest.[9]
Jinho watched in disbelief as Jinwoo slaughtered the corrupt hunters, the sight of his power, making the young hunter correctly deduce that Jinwoo was displaying even greater power when he fought the dungeon boss. After the Jinwoo killed Dongsuk, Jinho unable to bear so much death, vomited. When he finished he could only stare at Jinwoo in fear, but luckily the other hunter only gave some words of concern and that they needed to leave as the dungeon was collapsing due to the boss being defeated.[10]
Dungeon & Prisoners Arc
In the aftermath, Jinho gave all the salvaged mana crystals to Jinwoo and kept quite on what occurred in the dungeon. The credit to defeating the dungeon boss which was blamed for the deaths of the other eight hunters, Although they parted ways, Jinho used his connections in the Association to get in contact with JInwoo and asked him to meet him at a local cafe. Despite thinking Jinwoo to be a False Ranker, and a dangerous individual, Jinho attempted to recruit the hunter for his personal attack force but was immediately declined as Jinwoo had no wish to be the guard of a rich kid.
Jinho was insistent, asking Jinwoo to go on raids with him twenty times, offering the proper share of the spoils. Jinwoo seeing that Jinhoo is determined to head into the dungeons despite the dangers, deduces that the young man wants to gain a license to become a guild master. Though Jinwoo was still disinterested and was about to leave, but was prevented by Jinhoo pleas, who explained that he had only nineteen raids left to be qualified to be a guild master and form his own guild on the behalf of his father's company so that they could reap the rewards from the dungeons and become self-sufficient. Jinwhoo argued that since Jinwoo was deliberately hiding his ranking, it would be lucrative for him to join with him, as then he could maintain ambiguity by just hunting with low-ranking hunters. He then presented a document to the hunter on this offer.[11]
Said document was a plan to build a 3 billion won for the guild office, to underline how much investment that Yoojin Construction placed in creating the future guild. Jinwoo decided to agree to assist Jinho, under a condition that only he and him entered the dungeons. Jinho was frightful of the idea, and pointed out that they still needed ten more people to be allowed in C-Ranked dungeons. This was solved by Jinwoo by suggesting they follow Hwang Dongsoo's method of hiring people to fill the quotas for big rewards. Although it was still risky, Jinho was bought on the idea of the thought of proving his worth to his father. Thus he took charge in hiring out the hunters needed to fill the quota.[12]
Yoo Jinho Raid Party Arc
The next time Jinho met with Jinwoo, he presented him their raid team which was composed of hunters with licenses but were unable to attend raids normally due to injuries, coping with alcoholism or just seeking a quick cash grab. Which suited Jinho and Jinwoo just fine as they only needed the numbers to qualify for clearing C-Rank Gates as only the two of them would be entering them. The gathered hunters were credulous that they would be given 2 million won just to wait outside the Gate. Jinho confirmed that this was true and that they would be paid that amount for every raid. All they had to do was be outside the Gate when they finished clearing it and keep quiet about what is going on. If they breached their confidentiality, they would have to pay a fine of ten times their payment.
Before heading in, Jinho wore a heavy expensive armor suit that he got from Italy, which Jinwoo told him to ditch as it was it was heavy to move in. Shortly after some time Jinho and Jinwoo came out of the Gate, clearing it and to the shock of the other hunters in the shock told then to hurry to the next Gate.[13]
In the next dungeon Jinho was mining mana crystals while Jinwoo hunted the magic beasts. Later when they came out, at Jinwoo's request Jinho agreed to reschedule raids as Jinwoo had an engagement he needed to attend to tomorrow.[14]

In the aftermath of the Great Cataclysm that brought forth Gates, Magic Beasts and Hunters into the world, Jinho’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law went missing. During the time Jinho took it upon himself to take care of their son, his nephew Sung Suho.
Around the same time Jinho was approached by Woo Jinchul for investment in the governmental body to manage all the Awakened hunters. Jinho agreed to supporting the endeavor on the condition Jinchul used this new organization to not only safeguard South Korea but help search for Suho’s parents.[15]
Abilities
As a D-Rank, Jinho is somewhat weak for a hunter and has little battle experience, due to the fact that Jinwoo is typically the one who does all the fighting during their raids together. However, he was still strong enough to shield an elderly couple from falling debris during the Tokyo crisis and had enough endurance to remain conscious long enough for Jinwoo to arrive and save his life while he was being tortured by Hwang Dongsoo.

Thomas also has little tolerance for insubordination and disrespect, as displayed when he threatened Dongsoo for attempting to argue with him and became angry when Jinwoo refused to spare Dongsoo for torturing Jinho. Due to his nearly unrivaled strength and his humble origins, Thomas believes in the ideology that might makes right and has no qualms using brute force to accomplish his goals.
However, despite his pride, Thomas is very gracious in defeat, as he showed no ill will towards Jinwoo after the latter nearly killed him during their battle in the States. Years later, when the existence of magic beasts was discovered, Thomas seized the opportunity to become a true king and was granted power by the Rulers, eventually rising up to become one of the strongest hunters in the world.[2]
During his battle with Kamish, Thomas was able to get his hands on the dragon's sharpest fang after it bit him with it. Following Kamish's death, he was allowed to keep the fang as a souvenir and eventually sought to make a weapon out of it. As the fang was too short to make a longsword, it was crafted into a pair of daggers instead. However, as Thomas wasn't an assassin-type hunter, he chose not to use the daggers and as a result, they spent the next eight years collecting dust in the basement of the Scavenger Guild's HQ. Jeju Island Arc
When Hwang caused a scene in Korea in his attempt to hunt down and kill Jinwoo, Thomas flew over to Korea about a month later to personally meet with Go Gunhee and make sure that Hwang wasn't given a second opportunity to make the same mistake. However, after learning that Gunhee had already denied Hwang entry into the country, Thomas decided to head back home and made it clear that he would not participate in the Jeju Island Raid unless he was paid his fee.[3]
While watching the footage of Jinwoo's battle with the Ant King, Thomas learned from Laura that Jinwoo was responsible for the death of Hwang's older brother and that Hwang was looking to get revenge. This lead Thomas to realize that it was going to be very difficult to meet Jinwoo in person from now on and express his disappointment in not being able to. When Laura then asked him what he planned on doing if Jinwoo and Hwang got into a fight, Thomas sternly told her that Hwang belonged to the Scavenger Guild, which he owned, and that he wouldn't forgive anyone who messed with his property.[4]
Japan Crisis Arc
When a S-Rank Gate spawned in Maryland about a month later, Thomas overheard a trio of S-Ranks taking bets on when Jinwoo would die trying to clear the new S-Rank Gate in Tokyo. When one bet his yacht and another bet his house, Thomas barged into their conversation and bet his guild's HQ that Jinwoo would prove them all wrong, clear the gate without incident, and survive in one piece.[5]
After the Maryland S-Rank Gate was cleared without incident, Thomas learned that he had won his bet and gleefully confronted the same trio at the party held by the American government for losing their bet, rubbing it in their faces that they were stupid to underestimate Jinwoo as much as they did. Things got complicated, however, when he later learned from Laura that Jinwoo was coming to America to represent Korea at the International Guild Conference, which was a problem for them as Hwang was still bent on getting his revenge on Jinwoo for murdering his brother.[6]
International Guild Conference Arc
Two days before the conference was set to take place, Thomas summoned Hwang to his office and ordered him not to mess with Jinwoo under any circumstances and told him to take the day off on the day of the conference. Unfortunately, Hwang did not listen and targeted Jinho, Jinwoo's right-hand man, to get his revenge instead. By the time Thomas later tracked down Hwang to an abandoned factory, Jinwoo had already beaten him there and reduced Hwang to a bloody pulp.
Not wanting to lose Hwang over something as petty as revenge, Thomas requested Jinwoo to let him go, saying that he would pretend that this whole thing never happened if he did. When Jinwoo refused, Thomas angrily attacked him and the two of them got into a brutal fight as Jinwoo stubbornly refused to back down. When Jinwoo proved to be strong enough to make him bleed, Thomas decided to stop holding back and went all out, even using Reinforcement to get his best shot at victory. Unfortunately, it still wasn't good enough, as Jinwoo easily beat him to the brink of the death with his bare hands.[7]
After spending a day recovering in the hospital, Thomas met Jinwoo at the conference hall and asked the latter why he didn't kill him or any of his guild members. When Jinwoo responded by saying that they hadn't done anything to him that deserved death like Hwang had, Thomas accepted his reasoning and had Laura to ask Jinwoo for his contact info so that they could get a bite to eat together sometime.[8]
Monarchs War Arc
After his arm fully healed, Thomas retrieved Kamish's Wrath from his guild's HQ and traveled to Korea in order to give the weapon to Jinwoo as repayment for sparing the lives of his guild members. Unfortunately, when he arrived at the Ahjin Guild's office, Jinwoo was out raiding, forcing Thomas to wait over two hours before Jinwoo finally showed up.
The two then went out to eat and just when they were finishing up their meal, Thomas revealed Kamish's Wrath to Jinwoo, who was amazed by their staggering attack power and gladly accepted the daggers as a gift. However, before they could head back to Jinwoo's office, the two of them suddenly detected a massive amount of mana nearby and walked outside to see a gigantic gate spawning in the sky, with Thomas noting that it was far larger than the one that Kamish had crawled out of. As there were no new gates back home in America, Thomas decided to stay in Korea and help clear the gate free of charge.[9]
Several days later, when Rakan, one of the nine Monarchs, appeared out of the blue and started rampaging across the city, Thomas swiftly arrived on the scene and attempted to kill the creature himself. Although he was able to fight evenly with Rakan for a considerable amount of time, Thomas was unfortunately beaten when Rakan stopped holding back and activated his Spiritual Body Manifestation. However, before Rakan could kill him, Thomas was saved by Lennart Niermann, who was able to force Rakan back by firing an energy blast into his face.[10] Soon afterwards, Jinwoo showed up to fight and saved them both, giving Thomas enough time to leave the scene safely and get his injuries healed.
Final Battle Arc
After Antares, the strongest Monarch, invaded the human world and had his armies cut a wide path of destruction across Canada, Thomas arrived on the battlefield to fight his forces and was almost immediately confronted by Tarnak, who sneered at him for nearly dying to Rakan before and mocked him for being stupid enough to get himself killed all over again.[11] In response, Thomas summoned the shadow soldiers who had been hiding in his shadow, which included Bellion and Beru, and the three of them easily dispatched Tarnak in the ensuing battle.[12]
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation one last time per Jinwoo's request, this created a new timeline where humanity never learned of the existence of magic beasts. As a result, in this timeline, Thomas never became a hunter and eventually found his calling as a wrestling champion.
In his new life, Thomas nearly died in a car accident, but was saved thanks to Norma Selner after she informed him of the nail stuck in the tire of his car that would have resulted in a deadly crash.
The mystery of why she saved him of all people, only telling Thomas that it was due to him being a hero in another life, led to a strong friendship, with Thomas occasionally visiting her between his fights.
Ragnarok
At some point in his life, Thomas was encouraged by Madame Selner to learn Korean, advising him it would be a useful skill in the future. While not understanding the fortuneteller’s reason, the pro wrestler learned the language, trusting her, becoming fluent and also enthralled by Korean dramas.
Pyramid Arc
After the emergence of the Pyramid field-type dungeon in Egypt, which coincided with a prophecy from Madaem Selner that the secret to immortality could be found in the dungeon. Thomas dispatched Randolph and several members of the Scavenger Guild to secure the dungeon.
Preparation Arc
Thomas would regain his powers and his status as one of the strongest hunters in the world. Thomas would once again establish the Scavengers Guild, turning it into one of the strongest guilds in the world. Later at the behest of his old friend Madame Selner, Thomas was encouraged to seek Sung Suho in South Korea, after she received a prophecy that his help would be needed. [13]
Thomas never doubting Norma traveled with Laura to Korea to seek Suho for his assistance in conquering the Glacier Dungeon. Whilst in transit from the airport to Suho’s house Laura was able to find his residence and his information of being a C-Rank Hunter. Thomas was surprised as he doubted that a C-Rank Hunter could he the of any help in an S-Rank dungeon. Upon meeting Suho at his door, Thomas decided to test Suho’s strength, and thus release a gale of his magic aura.[14]
Thomas’s test, almost devolved into a fight after Suho not only resisted the pressure of mana, but rose to challenge the S-Rank Hunter. Before a fight could break out, Suho’s uncle Yoo Jinho arrived and demanded they cease. Laura recognized Jinho as being a major investor of the Scavenger Guild told Thomas to restrain himself, which he complied.[15] Under a more rational setting, Thomas explained that he came to bring Suho to help him conquer the Glacier Dungeon. As an incentive he passed a message to Suho from Norma that a clue to his missing mother Cha Hae-In could be found there.[16]
Thomas and Laura would depart but promised to return to hear Suho’s answer. The next day Thomas was annoyed that the Hunter was not at home. At first thinking he split down, Laura found a note from Suho that informed them he went out for a bit. The two deduced Suho’s location to be at Euljiro, the nearby Korean Hunter weapons market. Upon arriving there, Thomas was met by a dungeon break in the premises and was eager for some action, claiming the boss of the dungeon. However it was already sniped by Suho who gave credit to Lim Tae-Gyu.[17]
Glacier Dungeon Arc
Thomas then brings Suho and his comrades to Facade Island. Upon entering the dungeon Thomas gets separated from the raid team. During which he succumbs to being possessed by an Apostle. Thomas then goes on a rampage in the dungeon. Suho, with the help of his mother Hae-In manage to avoid killing Thomas, but exorcising the Apostle from the S-Rank Hunter's body using the sacred spring of the Ice Elves. Upon being freed from the Apostle, Thomas regained his memories of the former timeline. Furious at being used as a pawn by the Apostle, Thomas attacked the entity.
After the Apostle was defeated through the combined efforts of Hae-In and Suho, its essence was absorbed by Thomas, partially restoring his power as a National Level Hunter. From Beru and Suho the hunter was brought up to speed on the absence of Jinwoo as well as the danger of the Itarim and their Apostles. Seeing that the enemy was now stronger, Thomas was unfazed by the mounting danger and agreed to assist Suho in the fight. During the conversation of how to strengthen humanity, particularly bringing up their hunter technology to the levels of the former timeline, Thomas noticed Rio Singh's quality of weapon, that it was comparable to those found in the former timeline. Such advancement was seen to be unlikely given hunters were still a new development. This caused the Thomas and Suho to worry that this was work of an Apostle, until Hae-In deduced that it was actually Woo Jinchul's foresight and possible awareness of the former timeline that led to such technological advancement.
As thanks for restoring his memories, Thomas kept Hae-In and Suho's involvement in the Glacier Dungeon's conquest out of the news and letting his Scavenger Guild take the credit. This was to avoid the media from learning about the pair but also to have the servants of the Itarim divert their focus on him and allow Suho to operate in secret.
Thomas would return to the USA, bringing with him some water from the sacred spring and arranged a meeting with Christopher Reed. Thomas intended to give the water to Christopher as a countermeasure against being possessed by the Apostles, but discovered that his fellow S-Rank Hunter was already under the possession of one. A conflict arose and Thomas was force to defend himself. In the end he had to kill Christopher, in doing so absorbing the Apostle's power. However the death of Christopher at his hand shocked the USA, and he was accused as a murderer.
North Korea Arc
To allay the people's fears, Thomas willingly handed himself over to the Federal Bureau of Hunters. Under the custody of the organization, Thomas was able to speak to its head, Adam White on the reason of why he killed Christopher. Adam having conducted an investigation on Christopher's murder also noticed suspicious activity that the deceased S-Rank Hunter was involved in particularly the Foreign Religion which was beginning to spread throughout the country and its mysterious agenda.
Thomas words were believed by Adam and agreed that there was a credible unseen threat developing in their nation. But Thomas was kept in federal custody to maintain the illusion that he was still a suspect. In reality, the Federal Bureau of Hunters were actively assisting the S-Rank Hunter in hunting down the members of the Foreign Religion, each death by Thomas's hand allowed him to gain a little bit of his power as a National Level Hunter.
When Suho's reputation of 'The Vigilante' was trending on social media, Thomas received a call from the young hunter for assistance in linking his identity with Vigilante so he could gain public opinion and get permission to head to North Korea. Thomas then asked Adam to have the Federal Bureau of Hunters leak the information to the media.[18]

North Korea Arc
After the Apostle of Paradise was slain, the various Elvenwood that it planted across the globe were no longer invisible, exposing them to the world. In response the USA deployed its military and Hunters to destroy the Elvenwood in its territory and eliminate all the criminals and monsters hiding within. Thomas Andre, led the Scavenger Guild and Federal Bureau of Hunters in purging the dangerous elements out of the area.[19]
Solo Leveling: Raganarok Project Arc
Thomas was present in virtual space with other representatives of other guilds from across the globe to address Ahjin Soft’s newest game development, the artificial dungeons know as the Towers of Trial. Upon learning that players could awaken as Hunters and even increase their mana levels by just playing the game, Thomas decided to try the tutorial.
While playing the game tutorial he took a bit of offense that the game used characters of his personal associates such as Norma and Adam.[20] However the more Thomas immersed himself into the storyline, he soon realized that the game’s story was actually a biography of his old comrade Sung Jinwoo, and his beginning as a hunter in the original timeline.[21]
Thomas would reach the point in the game which depicted Christopher Reed being murdered by the Monarchs in the old timeline. The hunter viewed the memory somberly musing how unlucky Chris was in both timelines, and expressed regret of being unable to give the fellow S-Rank Hunter a proper burial. While he reflected on this, it dawned on Thomas that he saw a butterfly fly near what was left of Chris' remains, which he then suspected was actually an Apostle. This gave his dread that the Apostle may have salvaged something from Chris' body to create a perfect vessel. Although he wanted to warn Suho of the danger, Thomas did not to lose his spot in the game, and hoped the young hunter would be enough to fight the Apostle now armed with a suitable host. But remembering Chris' abilities, Thomas believed that if Suho engaged in a fight with the Apostle it would not be in his favor.[22]
Thomas continued playing until he came upon a hidden quest where he met an NPC version of Legia, the King of Giants and the Monarch of the Beginning, imprisoned in a dungeon. Having laid eyes on the giant, Thomas was in awe at the raw power emanated by the Monarch. The NPC pleaded for Thomas to free him. Thomas rather than simply kill Legia as Jinwoo did in the original timeline agreed though demanded Legia fight him to the death as he sought to prove himself against a Monarch like Jinwoo, as he was unable to defeat Rakan in the original timeline. The request surprised the giant but quickly agreed. Once freed they fought and Thomas’ game avatar was killed. However due to it being a game, Thomas respawned his avatar to rechallenge Legia. Legia continued to kill Thomas and to his confusion would always come back. While Thomas’ avatar showed no fatigue or physical strain, the constant fighting exhausted Legia to the point Thomas was able to kill the Monarch.
The tenacious and relentless actions of Thomas greatly impressed Ammut the Monarch of Trials and acting game administrator. Seeing a perfect vessel for the Primordial Darkness that he took from Nidhogg and belonged to the former King of Giants, Ammut gifted the hunter it. Thomas accepted the reward, granting him impressive power that he hoped would help him reach the level of Jinwoo.[23]
Upon emerging from his game capsule in New York City, he found it being under attack by the Apostle of Conquest and its brood. Thomas seeing an opportunity to test his newly gained power then went out to confront the invader by jumping out of his building and impacting the street floor. The impact he made caused many cars and people to be knocked off the ground. Thomas then displayed his newly regained power of telekinesis by controlling the gravity to safely bring the people and objects to the ground.
The hunter then proceed to punch the Apostle of Conquest with his fist, stunning it before outclassing its colossal size by growing into an giant being. Taking an interest in the Apostle’s title, Thomas expressed a desire to take it for himself. Summarily the System hailed that Thomas had ascended to become a Monarch in power.[24] After Thomas brutally ripped apart the Apostle of Conquest, the creature's body released a tremendous amount of energy. As the largest one was killed, the smaller Apostles of Conquest scattered throughout New York City instantly turned to dust, forever solidifying his new, legendary title.
And at the same time, the White House were watching the entire scene unfold. And a phrase simultaneously surfaced in all their heads. 'National Level.' Though it was known in the game world of Ahjin Soft, the President of the USA and his cabinet fully understood the significance of the power wielded by a National Level Hunter, and that it could hardly be classified as a mere 'S-Rank.' Thus, the title was officially recognized by unanimous consent.
Thomas would later visit Norma at her home, where she was entertaining President David Brennon and Adam White. The seer having expected him asked Thomas to take her to see Suho. The Monarch obliged and ordered the Shadow soldier hiding in his shadow to open the way. He, Norma and Adam then walked through the Gate that took them to the Sung residence in Seoul.[25]

Abilities
As the vessel of a Ruler and a National Level Hunter, Thomas is one of the strongest hunters in the world and his immense power earns him both great fear and respect from his fellow S-Ranks and governments all over the globe.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Thomas is well-versed in hand-to-hand combat, as shown by how he was able to hold his own against Rakan with his bare hands during their brief skirmish. Immense Strength: Thomas possesses tremendous amounts of physical strength. He was able to send Jinwoo flying with one punch, bring down buildings just from the wind pressure generated from his attacks, and match Rakan in strength during their battle in Korea, even launching him through several buildings at one point. After inheriting Legia's powers and becoming the Monarch of Conquest, Thomas' strength was drastically enhanced, enabling him to easily overpower the Apostle of Conquest and rip him apart limb by limb.[23] Immense Speed: Thomas can move at immense speeds. He was able to keep up with Jinwoo in their battle and eject himself out of his armor so quickly Rakan didn't even notice that he was gone until it was almost too late. Immense Durability: Thomas possesses immense durability and is able to withstand a ridiculous amount of punishment, even from opponents far stronger than himself, without suffering any injuries to himself. He was virtually unscathed when Jinwoo punched him in the chest and threw him through several buildings, and was completely unharmed when Rakan slashed him across the torso with his claws. Reinforcement: Thomas dramatically increases both his defense and attack power, covering himself from head to toe in golden armor with black horns and giving his hair a glowing flame-like quality. It should be noted that the additional defensive power that Thomas gets from this skill is so great that Jinwoo bruised his hands from punching him so many times during their fight. Capture: Thomas telekinetically pulls in objects towards himself. According to Jinwoo, with Reinforcement activated, this attack is so powerful that he would've been sucked in had he not been able to use Ruler's Authority himself. As a further testament to the sheer might of this attack, it was able to pull Kamish out of the sky. Collapse: Thomas smashes his fists into the ground, creating a massive shockwave that demolishes anyone unfortunate enough to get caught in its blast radius. Spiritual Body Manifestation: Briefly manifests the power of a Ruler, enhancing strength and speed to supernatural levels. Power Smash: Thomas infuses his mana into a single arm and throws an extremely powerful punch. Gigantification: Thomas can increase his physical size to the point that he can become as large as an actual giant

HANGUL 국가권력급 헌터 SKILLS Ruler's Authority Spiritual Body Manifestation National Level Hunters (국가권력급 헌터) [1] are hunters who rival a nation's entire military in strength.
ADVERTISEMENT Overview
In the aftermath of the death of the dragon Kamish, the five S-Rank Hunters who killed him were each given the authority equal to that of an entire nation's as a reward for their achievement. From there, the title of "National Level Hunter" was born.[2]
These hunters are regarded as beyond S-Rank due to being far more powerful than typical S-Rank Hunters and possessing extraordinary capabilities unique to themselves. Each of them has cleared at least one S-Rank gate and as noted by Goto Ryuji, achieving this much is the minimum requirement for anyone who wishes to join their ranks. As a result, they are considered to be the strongest hunters in the world, live in royalty, and operate with near-absolute freedom, answering to no one but themselves.[3]
It is later revealed that the reason why the top four National Level Hunters are so much stronger than most other S-Rank Hunters is because they were granted power by the Rulers over the past 10 years, just like how Jinwoo was with Ashborn.[4]
In the revised timeline created by the Cup of Reincarnation, the title was eventually reintroduced by Liu Zhigang after he witnessed Sung Suho exert an unbelievable amount of power during a dungeon break that occurred in India.[5] However, unlike how it was in the original timeline, the Rulers did not choose any human hosts to share their powers with. As a result, while the four hunters who were originally chosen by the Rulers still ranked as the strongest hunters in the world in the revised timeline, they were not as strong as they were in the original timeline.
The title had yet to be officially recognized by the governments of the world. Though it was known in the game world of Ahjin Soft. After Thomas Andre ascended to become a Monarch, turning into a giant and defeating the Apostle of Conquest, the President of the USA and his cabinet fully understood the significance of the power wielded by a National Level Hunter, and thus the title was officially recognized by unanimous consent

Ruler's Authority (지배자의 권능), also called Capture, is a telekinetic skill exclusive to the Rulers and their human vessels.
Overview
Ruler's Authority is a form of telekinesis unique to the Rulers and the humans who have been granted their powers. Given how strong the Rulers are, at full strength, this skill is so powerful that it is virtually impossible for even Monarch-level fighters to counter unless they can use the skill themselves.[1] It also does not cost any mana to use and can be applied over a large radius, as displayed when Jinwoo used it to incapacitate Kandiaru's statues all at once,[2] and even on the surrounding area to a certain extent, enabling its users to move and dodge attacks while airborne.[3] History
Jinwoo originally obtained a lesser version of this skill called Ruler's Hands from the rune stone that he got from defeating Igris. It would later evolve into Ruler's Authority and thus obtain its true strength during his battle with Kandiaru's statues in the Cartenon Temple
- #9A-Rank
Keys: A-Rank
A-Rank is the second-highest rank a Hunter can obtain.
Overview
A-rank Hunters are among the most powerful individuals, just below the elite S-rank Hunters. They are considered high-tier combatants capable of handling strong monsters and high-difficulty Dungeons. While they don't possess the overwhelming power of S-ranks, they are still formidable fighters and highly valued assets in raids and guilds.
A-rank Hunters are strong enough to be the core members of elite raid teams, often leading groups of lower-ranked Hunters. They can take on high-ranking Dungeons, though S-rank Dungeons are still beyond their capabilities. Some A-ranks possess powerful abilities that allow them to fight at a near-S-rank level, but they lack the extreme power required to be classified as true S-ranks.
While they are respected, they are also aware that the power gap between them and S-ranks is vast. For instance, an S-rank Hunter can single-handedly clear Dungeons that would require an entire team of A-rank Hunters. ADVERTISEMENT Notable Hunters

- #10S-Rank
Keys: S-Rank
S-Rank is the highest rank a hunter can obtain and the highest tier on the hunter ranking hierarchy.
Overview
S-Rank Hunters are distinguished by the fact that their mana levels are so high that they cannot be measured by mana meter technology. As the vast majority of hunters never reach that level of power, S-Rank Hunters are very rare amongst the human population, with only a handful per country and a few hundred worldwide. Due to their small numbers and the high demand for their abilities, S-Rank Hunters are highly sought after around the world and are usually very wealthy, with many making enough money to last several lifetimes.
Due to how strong they are, battles between S-Rank Hunters typically cause extensive damage to the surrounding landscapes. Their immense power also makes it nearly impossible to hold them accountable if they break the law and commit crimes, as shown by how Sung Jinwoo never faced criminal charges for murdering Hwang Dongsoo.
However, as their mana levels cannot be measured, there is no power cap on S-Ranks like there is with the lower ranks. As a result, the power gaps between S-Ranks is the highest out of any other rank. Also, unless the power gap between two S-Ranks is very large, it is virtually impossible to accurately compare them in strength. As a result, S-Ranks are ranked internationally by their achievements via a point system established by the Federal Bureau of Hunters, and not by their raw power or mana levels.
There also exists a special class of S-Rank Hunters known as the National Level Hunters, which was created after the end of the Kamish Raid. These hunters are said to be beyond S-Rank due to how much more powerful they are compared to the average S-Rank Hunter and possess extraordinary capabilities unique to themselves. They also each have the authority equal to that of an entire nation's, enabling them to live like kings and do whatever they please. Korea

Keys: Hunters
Hunters HANGUL 헌터 DEBUT Chapter 1NV, Chapter 1WB, Episode 1AN STATISTICS RANK S-E Rank Hunters (헌터) are human warriors who possess magical powers and use them to fight magic beasts and clear dungeons.
Overview
Hunters first appeared around the same time humanity was first exposed to the existence of mana. Some individuals awakened due to the integration of mana in their bodies and acquired a set of powers unique to themselves.[1]
As hunters turned out to be the only ones who could kill magic beasts and close gates, a global billion-dollar industry eventually developed around them as a result. They are also usually organized inside guilds, which can have up to hundreds or even thousands of members.
Hunters are ranked by an international S-E system to show how strong they are, with E being the weakest and S being the strongest, and can possess a wide range of abilities. A hunter's rank and stats are determined at the time they receive their powers and cannot be naturally increased. However, there are rare cases of hunters receiving a second awakening and climbing up in rank. It is also estimated that only 0.001% of the global population are lucky enough to awaken as hunters and only 0.0002% have ranks of C or higher.
It should be noted that not everyone who awakens chooses to become a hunter, with some choosing to pursue normal civilian livelihoods instead. Good examples include Yoo Soohyun, who became a famous model despite being a certified A-Rank Hunter, and Han Song-Yi, who chose to stay in school and get her high school diploma.
While there is no direct proof, it has been suggested that genetics might play a role in the awakening process. Notable examples of hunters who are biologically related to each other include Sung Jinwoo and his father Sung Il-Hwan, along with Soohyun and her cousin Jinho.[2] ADVERTISEMENT
Classes
There are two general categories of hunters, combat and non-combat, and six different specific class-types of hunters: Fighters, Mages, Assassins, Tankers, Rangers, and Healers. Licensing & Regulation
In order to be officially recognized as hunters, awakened individuals have to obtain a hunter's license from their respective country's hunters association. This license grants them the authority to enter gates and dungeons. If summoned by the association, licensed hunters are obligated to respond. Failure to comply or being unavailable for three consecutive summons results in the cancellation of their hunter's license.
Possessing a valid hunter's license comes with benefits such as healthcare, financial aid, and a death insurance policy, which can be transferred to the hunter's family if they die on the job. These advantages were key motivators for Jinwoo to become a hunter, as it enabled him to financially support both himself and his sister, pay for his mother's medical bills when she was sick with Eternal Slumber, and make sure that his family would be paid a large sum of money if he were to ever die in the dungeons.
- #12Class Ranks
Keys: Class Ranks
Class Ranks refers to the international S-E ranking system for individuals who possess magical abilities and radiate mana from their bodies. It is primarily used to determine how strong they are and has been in existence for about 8-9 years.
ADVERTISEMENT Overview
Ranks are divided into six levels corresponding to a certain letter in the alphabet, E being the weakest and S being the strongest. It is used to classify hunters as well as dungeons and magic beasts, each ranks are known to have a tremendous power difference to the ones below it. The six divided ranks are: E, D, C, B, A and S.
As noted multiple times throughout the story, a hunter's rank essentially determines everything about them, including their income and their reputations as hunters. The disparities between ranks are also not easily overcome even after years of training and the gap in power between ranks can be very wide, as B-Ranks easily overpower C-Ranks and S-Ranks are exponentially more powerful compared to A-Ranks.
Naturally, the higher a hunter's rank is, the more valuable they are. Thus, E-Ranks are viewed as disposable and receive very low pay even still very high compared to most white-collar professions, while S-Ranks, especially particularly powerful ones, are highly valued and are typically rolling in money.
It is estimated that the higher the rank, the scarcer its existence is, with only one in five thousand individuals possessing ranks above D.
Normally, a hunter's rank is set in stone from the moment they awaken and the only way for their rank to increase is if they receive a second awakening, which is said to be very rare. The only known exception to this rule is Sung Jinwoo, as his unique status as the Player of System allowed him to continuously grow in strength through training.
Although the ranking system is typically very accurate and is seen as the standard for hunters around the world, this is not always the case due to existence of False Rankers, hunters who can consciously control their mana output and are therefore ranked much lower then they should be. False rankers usually have nefarious motivations for hiding their true strength and many of them are said to be heartless psychopaths who kill other hunters for fun. They are, however, said to be quite rare.
- #13Mana
Keys: Mana
TYPE Energy EFFECTS Empowering living and non-living beings. SOURCE Dungeons Mana is a form of natural energy that radiates from anything of magical nature, including Hunters, Magic Beasts, and Gates.
Description
Mana is not native to the human world. Instead, it originates from gods such as the Absolute Being and their creations, such as the Rulers and the Monarchs. As a result, humanity was not aware of its existence until gates, portals from another world, started opening up around the globe.
The flow of mana into the human world through the gates is what caused certain people to awaken and become hunters, as it would integrate into their bodies and grant them magical abilities. It should be noted that once a person awakens, the mana flowing through them strengthens their bodies to the point that conventional human weaponry cannot easily hurt them. As a result, even the weakest hunter is significantly more durable than an ordinary human.
The amount of mana emitted by a hunter can be measured into a numerical value with special devices and the corresponding measurement is how they are categorized into the ranking system. The only exception to is are S-Rank Hunters, whose mana output is too high for these devices to accurately measure. There are also rare cases of hunters being able to consciously control their mana output and conceal their true abilities so that they can rank lower than they should; these hunters are called False Rankers.
Mana can be found in inanimate objects found inside the dungeons, such as Mana Crystals and essence stones. After the gates first opened, it was discovered that they could used as a clean and long-lasting power source, eventually making it possible for hunters to sell them on the market for large profits.
However, despite the fact that people are awakening almost every day, some humans have a lower tolerance to mana; this prevents them from awakening and ever becoming hunters. There are also people whose bodies cannot tolerate the existence of mana and can develop a sleeping disorder called Eternal Slumber if they are exposed for too long. Due to the fact that humanity still lacks knowledge on the practical applications of mana, there is no known cure for Eternal Slumber. As a result, it is essentially a death sentence for those who are diagnosed with it.
As later discovered by Sung Jinwoo, the Rulers were the ones who created the gates for the sole purpose of filling the human world with mana. This would reinforce the earth for their coming war with the Monarchs and ensure that humanity wouldn't be completely wiped out by the time the bloodshed was over.
- #14Dungeons
Keys: Dungeons
Dungeons are pockets of the chaos world that are connected to the human world through Gates.
Overview
Dungeons are the result of mysterious Gates that appear randomly in the human world. These Gates act as entrances to another dimension. They generally contain a horde of monsters, which are led by a boss, and remain open until the boss is killed. Once the boss is killed, the Dungeon will stay open for about an hour before closing on its own.
It should be noted that in order to prevent the loss of human life as much as possible, a Dungeon must be cleared within seven days. If it is not, then it will undergo what's called a "Dungeon Break", meaning that the monsters inside the Dungeon will be able to cross over to the human world and attack the civilian population. In the revised timeline, a Gate that suffers a Dungeon Break, if left unsupervised and unchecked for a certain period of time, can cause infection of mana to the surroundings and making it incompatible for humans to live in. This event is called a "Field-Type Dungeon" and it allows Magic Beast to roam free and claim the infected area as their territory.
Dungeons are the main source of livelihood for Hunters, who earn money and fame by clearing them. Dungeons also contain treasures like artifacts and Mana Crystals that Hunters could collect. ADVERTISEMENT
Types of Dungeons
The structure of the Dungeons is very variable, and can range from multi-level caverns to huge landscapes. They can be classified into the S-E Ranking System and the strength of the monsters usually correlates with the Dungeon's rank.
Low-Rank Dungeons: Suitable for E or D-rank hunters. These have weaker monsters and less valuable loot. High-Rank Dungeons: Require strong Hunters (A-rank or S-rank) to clear due to the presence of powerful monsters and bosses. Red Gates: Rare and extremely dangerous, as Hunters are teleported into a Dungeon without the ability to exit until they either clear it or die. Instance Dungeons: Unique to Sung Jinwoo, as part of the System. These Dungeons are separate from regular Gates and serve as quests or training grounds for him.

Due to the manipulations of the Rulers, the vast majority of them are extremely hostile towards humans.
Overview
Magic Beasts are monsters native to the alternate dimensions accessed through Gates. If a dungeon isn’t cleared in time, a Dungeon Break occurs, allowing the Magic Beasts inside to escape into the human world. In the case of high-rank Dungeons, these Magic Beasts can destroy cities or even countries if left unchecked.
Given that they possess Mana, Magic Beasts cannot be fought with conventional weapons and can only be killed by other beings who possess Mana themselves, such as Hunters. Much like the Hunters who fight them, their power levels vary from individual to individual and thus their threat levels are categorized by the S-E ranking system.
Although they generally appear to be mindless monsters, Magic Beasts are able to forge their own gear and can be as intelligent as humans, with some of them even able to speak human languages. They also use a runic alphabet and have their own language, which is often referred to by humans as beast language or monster tongue.
They have Essence Stones embedded in their bodies, which can be sold for large profits due to how valuable they can be. As such, Guilds employ Collecting Teams dedicated to recollect the corpses of defeated Magic Beasts.
After the Monarchs lost the war, their surviving soldiers went into hiding and have effectively turned themselves into refugees intending to invade Earth yet again. However, their intentions are now more focused on trying to survive and create a foothold for themselves.
Magic Beasts meat is said to be unappetizing and toxic. If eaten usually it leads to either indigestion or even the stomach melting or organs rotting in severe cases. Though there is always the exception. And while there are ways to neutralize the toxins, it sadly doesn’t change the taste.[2] ADVERTISEMENT
Types
Magic Beasts differ based on the type and rank of the Dungeon. They can be classified by species like Beasts, Demons, Humanoids, Undeads, etc.
Each Dungeon has a "boss monster", the most powerful Magic Beast in the Dungeon. The boss must be defeated to clear the Dungeon. Boss monsters often have unique abilities and are significantly stronger than regular monsters in the same Dungeon.
Some Magic Beasts are connected to the Monarchs, like the Ant King from Jeju Island. These creatures are far stronger than ordinary Dungeon monsters.

Keys: Gates
HANGUL 차원의 문 RANK S-E Rank NOVEL Chapter 2WB WEBTOON Chapter 2WB The portals that connect our world to the other dimension are called... "Gates." And beyond these gates are "dungeons," where evil spirits lurk within. CHAPTER 1
Gates (차원의 문)[1] are the magical portals that form a bridge between the human world and the enigmatic realms known as "Dungeons."
They started to appear in the human world around 10 years prior to the start of the story, as a result of an intent of the Rulers to saturate the human world with Mana in order for it to withstand their war against the Monarchs.
Overview
Gates are distinct blue portals that appear in a range of settings seemingly at random, from highways to abandoned areas and even high schools. They remain open until the Dungeon boss inside is defeated. If not addressed within a few days, a Dungeon Break will occur, releasing the Magical Beasts from within into the world.
Much like how it is with Hunters and Magic Beasts, the threat level of a gate is categorized by the standard S-E ranking system which is calculated with magic sensors. As a result, E-Rank gates are considered very low-risk, while S-Rank gates put entire countries in a state of emergency.
Gates were divided into two distinct type. First is the normal type, and second is the Red Gate type. Red gates only occur in B-Rank or higher gate. At first it is undistinguishable from a normal raid, but once a certain amount of people step in, it will turn into a red gate, blocking the entrance and exit from both side and no longer emitting mana waves. What lies beyond a red gate isn't a normal dungeon, it could be a scorching desert, a jungle teeming with poisonous snakes and insects, or a snowy field where there toes become covered in frostbite. The only way to escape a red gate is to either defeat the boss or wait until a dungeon break occur.
Although what really determines the rank of a Gate is the quantity and quality of magical energy that it emits from within and is measured, Gates also tend to be larger when they rank higher, as D-Rank gates are about the size of large doors while S-Rank gates are so large that they appear to be like hurricanes.
It was revealed that the Monarchs can create gates in order to let their soldiers invade Earth. ADVERTISEMENT

- #17Mana Crystals
Keys: Mana Crystals
SOURCE Dungeons Mana Crystals are a blue-colored, magical mineral found inside dungeons. Although they aren't worth as much as essence stones due to not containing as much mana, they can still sell at high prices and serve as a secondary source of income for hunters around the world.
As electricity doesn't work inside dungeons, hunters are required to mine mana crystals with manual methods, such as pickaxes. As a result, guilds typically have mining teams composed of hunters dedicated to just mining crystals. Since crystals are typically found in large deposits and the hunters on the teams are usually low-ranking, it typically takes several hours before a dungeon is picked clean of crystals.
- #18Mining Team
Keys: Mining Team
The Mining Team is essential to a guild, responsible for mining ores and mana crystals in dungeons once the Strike Team has eliminated all monsters except the boss. Given the incompatibility of modern machinery in dungeons, they revert to traditional mining methods, utilizing mana-infused pickaxes and carts. Sung Jinwoo observed these processes firsthand by participating in the Hunters Guild's Mining Team during a high-ranking A-Gate operation.
- #19Guilds
Keys: Guilds
LOCATION Worldwide Guilds are organized groups of hunters that are dedicated to raiding gates and clearing dungeons. The leader of a guild is called the Guild Master and for elite guilds around the world, most Guild Masters are S-Rank Hunters.
Premier guilds are known for actively seeking out high-level hunters and offering them large salaries and substantial bonuses if they are of high enough rank. Due to how powerful and established they are, these guilds also ensure a greater level of safety for their members and typically have their raids well planned out in advance.
Lower-level guilds often recruit hunters of various different ranks and typically venture into dungeons beyond their capabilities, leading to higher mortality rates and significantly less safety for their members. As a result, it is typically frowned upon to join one of these guilds due to the risks involved. Independent hunters who are not affiliated with any guild in particular are also allowed to enter gates and clear dungeons, although they must obey any rules set by the Korean Hunters Association before being allowed to enter.
Economy
For hunters, securing valuable items like essence stones, monster corpses, and mana crystals often requires a great deal of manpower that can only be satisfied by larger and established guilds. As a result, these guilds can obtain access to top-tier gates with superior loot and can sell the high-level items that they collect in these gates on the market for large profits, cementing their pivotal role in the commercial economy.
Top-tier guilds like the Hunters Guild use strategic tactics for raiding gates, deploying elite strike squads for multi-day operations. During these raids, specialized crews handle monster recovery and mining after the battle against the monsters inside the gate is over. After the dungeon has been picked clean of everything of value, the hunters then proceed to kill the dungeon boss and seal the gate. Major corporations like Yoojin Construction have taken notice of this lucrative industry and have attempted to create their own guilds, despite having an established presence in various other business sectors. This move highlights just how much the hunting industry is worth and just how much profit can be made from raiding gates and clearing dungeons. ADVERTISEMENT
Benefits
Hunters who are members of a guild enjoy much more favorable tax rates than independent hunters when selling essence stones and similar items that they find in dungeons. As an example of this, Sung Jinwoo had to deal with a 40% tax rate when selling 49 C-Rank essence stones as an independent hunter and made a profit of $135,000 USD. Conversely, had he been a member of a guild during the time of the sale, that tax rate would've been reduced to 10% and he would've made around $200,000 USD in profits instead.
As guilds are mandated to mobilized when ordered to by the Korean Hunters Association, they receive tax breaks due to their obligatory operational nature. This duty was evident when the White Tiger Guild responded to the first Double Dungeon Incident. Given the risks and demands of their duties, it's reasonable for guilds to receive privileges and concessions, including tax deductions, as long as they comply with the directives issued to them by their local governments. - #20Essence Stones
Keys: Essence Stones
SOURCE Magic Beasts Essence Stones are small glowing stones that are found inside the corpses of magic beasts. They are generally very valuable and serve as the primary source of income for hunters around the world.
Naturally, an essence stone's worth is determined by its rank and quality. As a result, E-Rank essence stones sell for very little cash since they are so common and low-quality, while S-Rank essence stones sell for millions due to how rare and top-quality they are. It should also be noted that the color of an essence stone depends on its rank. For example, D-Rank essence stones are white, A-Rank essence stones are red, and S-Rank essence stones are purple.
Essence stones can be used to forge equipment and weapons with special properties that hunters can use in battle. It can also be used as a long-lasting and highly efficient energy source, given that Kamish's essence stone was used to power the FBH's HQ for nearly a decade.
It is later revealed that the Rulers created essence stones and implanted them inside the magic beasts that they captured during their first war with the Monarchs to have them kill humans and in turn, saturate the human world with vast amounts of mana so that mankind wouldn't be wiped out during their eventual rematch with the Monarchs.
- #21Strike Team
Keys: Strike Team
A Strike Team, Strike Squad, or an Attack Force are a group of hunters who band together to enter gates and defeat dungeons. These teams are often diverse, composed of hunters from different classes and ranks, each bringing their unique skills and abilities to tackle the challenges within the gates.
They can function independently or as part of a guild, comprised of damage dealers like fighters, rangers, and tanks, alongside supportive roles such as healers and mages.
Alongside the Strike Team, it is possible for them to be accompanied by a mining team who will collect the Mana Crystals, and a collecting team who will recover the remains of magic beasts. The strike team may also have a Porter, a hunter tasked with carrying equipment such as weapons for the other members.
Third Jeju Island Raid
Anime Episode 1 Eunseok, Baek Yoonho, and Min Byung-Gu during the Third Jeju Island Raid The Third Jeju Island raid, involving hundreds of hunters, relied on the era's mightiest Korean S-Rank hunters, including Baek Yoonho, Min Byung-gu, Eunseok, and Choi Jong-In. They were tasked with the critical mission of retaking the island, but despite their combined abilities they encountered the overwhelming power of the ants. This led to their eventual failure, the tragic loss of Eunseok, and forced the team to retreat, marking the mission to reclaim the island as unsuccessful for a third time.
Double Dungeon Team
Anime Episode 1 Double Dungeon Strike Team The Double Dungeon strike team, originally a group of low-level hunters striving to clear dungeons and earn a living, became notorious following the tragic Double Dungeon incident. This devastating event resulted in the survival of only 6 out of the 17 hunters who entered. Led by Song Chi-Yul, the most experienced among them, the team was not officially organized but rather an ad hoc amalgamation of available hunters at the time.
Hwang Dongsuk's Lizards
Anime Episode 5 Hwang Dongsuk and his Strike Team Hwang Dongsuk's strike team was comprised entirely of damage dealers, with no healers in their ranks. These hunters, colloquially termed as "lizards," operated with a ruthless strategy: recruiting low-rank hunters to fulfill the minimum required numbers for dungeon raids, only to betray them later, similar to a lizard's tactic of shedding its tail to escape danger. Dongsuk's Strike Team is not affiliated with any known Guild.
Jinho's Strike Team
Anime Episode 10 Jinho's Strike Team Jinho's Strike Team was an unconventional group, formed with the purpose of clearing dungeons to establish his credentials as a Guild Master. Jinho recruited a range of hunters who, due to various reasons from injuries to personal issues, didn't typically participate in raids. The team included the young Han Song-Yi, who, despite being a school-aged minor, joined the raid due to her Awakened status. Jinho and Jinwoo cleared the gates themselves, using the team only to fulfill the eight-member threshold necessary for the raids, and they never participated.
Hunters Guild Team A & B
Anime Episode 11 Hunters Guild The Hunters Guild, being one of the largest and most powerful guilds in Korea, boasted enough members to form two distinct Strike Teams. The first team, A, was led by the Guild Master Choi Jong-In and Vice-Guild Master Cha Hae-In, and was composed of their greatest Hunters, reflecting their elite status. This team would tackle the highest-level gates for the guild.
Strike Team B, captained by Son Kihoon, is comprised of a formidable mix of 11 A-Rank and 6 B-Rank Hunters. Notable members include Lee Bora and Gina, who are mages, Han Semi a healer and Seo Jiwoo a fighter . While any other guild would have considered such members as their main attack force, in this guild, they were deemed second-tier—a testament to the exceptional caliber of the Hunters Guild

As they specialize in defense, tankers generally carry shields and wear heavy armor and are tasked with shielding the rest of the team during raids so that the other hunters can perform their roles. Compared to other classes, tankers are much more durable and are able to take much more punishment in battle before going down. Tankers use abilities like Taunt to draw the attention and attacks of monsters, creating opportunities for damage dealers like Fighters or Rangers to strike without fear of retaliation. However, while defense is their greatest strength, tankers can still go on the offensive without much trouble. To maintain their resilience in battle, they often depend on Healers for buffs and healing support. Skills
Taunt: The vast majority of tankers are able to taunt their enemies, which magically induces them into attacking without thinking. However, it should be noted that this skill only works on enemies that are weaker than the said tanker themselves. Strengthening: Strengthening is a skill commonly used by high-ranking Tank fighters. However, since they mainly use their abilities for support, they are generally at a huge disadvantage in battle.
The effectiveness and potency of healing magic are significantly influenced by the healer's class rank. For instance, S-Rank healers such as Min Byung-Gyu possess the remarkable ability to reattach limbs and perform instantaneous healing, while a B-rank like Lee Joohee requires time to heal wounds and may be unable to heal wounds that are too serious. Skills
Healing: This skill enables the user to mend injuries and restore health, either for themselves or others, significantly speeding up the natural healing process. SKILLS Spiritual Body Manifestation The Monarchs (군주) are an ancient race of monsters created by the Absolute Being and the arch-enemies of Rulers. As a result, with the exception of Ashborn, they serve as the primary antagonists of Solo Leveling.
History
Rulers The endless war between Light and Darkness At the dawn of time, when light and darkness was all that existed, the Absolute Being split the light to create the Rulers and split the darkness to create the Monarchs. As the Monarchs were born to destroy the world and the Rulers were born to protect it, it wasn't long before they engaged in a devastating war against each other.
Eons later, when the Absolute Being was ousted and murdered, the Rulers used tools containing fragments of his power to hunt down the Monarchs and were able to capture the Monarch Legia alive, tipping the tide of the war in their favor and giving them a solid shot towards victory. Realizing this, the Shadow Monarch Ashborn reached out to the remaining Monarchs and offered his help. As they had no other viable choice, the other Monarchs reluctantly accepted him as their new ally.
Ashborn21 Ashborn is betrayed by the Monarchs Unfortunately for Ashborn, even though he managed to stabilize the power balance and keep the war going, his overwhelming strength made him a feared figure on both sides and eventually led two of the Monarchs, Rakan and Baran, to betray him and ambush him with their armies. Although Ashborn easily defeated both Monarchs and killed Baran in retaliation for his treachery, his shadow army was nearly annihilated.
Antares4 Antares allows Ashborn to rejoin his forces Deciding to seek revenge against Rakan, Ashborn went into hiding to rebuild his army, enabling the Rulers to finally win the war and forcing the Monarchs to escape to the cracks between worlds. However, at some point after this, Ashborn returned and Antares, the strongest Monarch, gladly allowed him to rejoin their ranks, as the other Monarchs were still weakened from their loss to the Rulers and needed time to restore their powers.
Centuries later, the Monarchs tried to vanquish the human world in order to rebuild their armies and the Rulers attempted to stop them to save the human race from certain extinction. When their efforts failed, the Rulers used a tool created by the Absolute Being called the Cup of Reincarnation, which had the power to turn back time 10 years each time they used it, in order to give them a second chance. Unfortunately, this only prolonged what seemed to be inevitable, as the human world would always be destroyed regardless of which side won the war and regardless of how many times the Rulers turned back time. Jeju Island Arc
Monarchs4 The fated rematch between the Monarchs and the Rulers begins Several days after the Jeju Island S-Rank Gate was finally cleared, Rakan picked up traces of the Shadow Monarch's power on Jeju and traveled there to verify his findings. Along the way, he encountered Sillad, who had picked up on Ashborn's trail as well, and the two of them agreed that it was about time to start their rematch with the Rulers.
Japan Crisis Arc
Chris1 Christopher Reed is killed by the Monarchs Several months after the events of the Jeju Island Raid, the Rulers gave Legia a way out by spawning a S-Rank Gate in Tokyo. Unfortunately for Legia, he never got his freedom, as he was killed by Sung Jinwoo, the vessel of the Shadow Monarch. At the same time, the Monarchs initiated their hunt for the Rulers in the human world and killed Christopher Reed, the strongest hunter in America and one of the seven Rulers' vessels.
International Guild Conference Arc
Several days before the International Guild Conference was scheduled to take place, the Monarchs abducted and murdered Jonas, the strongest hunter in Brazil and another Rulers' vessel.
Monarchs War Arc
Monarchs5 The Monarchs regroup to decide their next move On the last day of the conference, Sillad killed Go Gunhee, the second strongest hunter in Korea at the time and another Rulers' vessel, but not without discovering that the Shadow Monarch had found his human vessel and turned against them. Realizing that this development could completely derail their plans to win the war, the Monarchs regrouped to decide their next move. Ultimately, three of the Monarchs (Rakan, Querehsha, and Sillad) decided to go ahead and try to kill Jinwoo before he fully absorbed Ashborn's powers, while the other two (Tarnak and Yogumunt) refused to help and opted to wait for Antares to return instead.
Jinwoo75 Jinwoo faces off against three Monarchs at once With that, the three Monarchs invaded Seoul in order to lure out Jinwoo and kill him. Although they were able to defeat Thomas Andre and seemingly kill Jinwoo, they failed to make sure that he was truly dead and thanks to Sung Il-Hwan's intervention, they were also unable to stop him from ascending and gaining the true powers of the Shadow Monarch. As a result, they failed to carry out their mission and were all easily slaughtered by Jinwoo.
Final Battle Arc
Shortly after Jinwoo killed the three Monarchs who came after him in Korea, Antares learned from Yogumunt that the Shadow Monarch had betrayed them and annihilated most of their forces. Undaunted by their losses, Antares decided to deal with Ashborn's vessel himself and ordered his surviving brethren, along with their armies, to prepare for battle.[1]
Antares11 Jinwoo faces off against Antares Several days later, Antares and his allies descended into the human world through a gigantic gate in Canada and attempted to lure Jinwoo out by cutting a wide path of destruction across the country, massacring millions in the process.[2] Unfortunately, they failed to deduce that Jinwoo already had a plan made to counter their own and as a result, he was able to easily defeat Yogumunt and Tarnak without even having to actually fight them in-person, leaving Antares the last Monarch standing.[3] As he was unwilling to fight Antares in Canada, Jinwoo decided to take the battle to a remote island in Japan, where no one could get hurt in the crossfire of their clash.
Antares21 Antares is killed by the Rulers, ending the war Upon arriving on the island, the two of them then began to fight in earnest and although Antares was able to gain the upper hand without much trouble, he failed to realize in time that Jinwoo had just been using their battle to distort space in order to summon his allies from the chaos world. As a result, he was caught completely off-guard when the Rulers suddenly appeared in the human world in their raw forms and rushed him with their spears with all directions, killing him on the spot and finally ending the war with their victory.[4]
Epilogue
Yogumunt8 Jinwoo slaughters the Monarchs After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation to turn back time at Jinwoo's request, all of the Monarchs, except for Baran, were brought back from the dead with their memories intact.[5] In order to ensure that the events of the previous timeline were not repeated, Jinwoo then began killing the Monarchs off one by one and although it took him 27 years, he eventually slaughtered them all and returned back to the human world in one piece, allowing the Rulers to win the war once and for all and leaving himself as the last Monarch alive.[6]

Strengths
As one of the two races created by the Absolute Being, the Monarchs are some of the strongest beings in existence, surpassed only by the gods. Their exceedingly immense strength, along with the eons of fighting experience that they have, makes them nearly unparalleled in battle, with only the Rulers capable of matching them on the battlefield. They are also far more powerful than the average S-Rank Hunter, with even the National Level Hunters standing no chance against them in combat, and each have millions of soldiers under their command.
The Monarchs are all capable of using a skill called Spiritual Body Manifestation, which enables them to take on their true forms and access their true powers. They can also create gates and use them to travel over vast distances and between worlds. Weaknesses
As they lack organic form and have mana-based biology, the Monarchs cannot easily cross over into the human world without suitable human vessels, a property that they share with the Rulers. Unlike the Rulers, the Monarchs also completely possess their vessels and essentially steal their bodies for themselves. Although this technique allows them to exert their full power in the human world, it also means that they will perish if their human vessels are slain in battle. ADVERTISEMENT Succession
As revealed by Antares in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, a magic beast can succeed a deceased Monarch either by being selected by the Absolute Being or by a priest working for the deceased Monarch. After the Absolute Being was killed by the Rulers, the Monarchs took to having their priests pick their successors.
To complete the succession process, a potential successor must fight against a legendary, eight-headed serpent called Nidhogg and slice off one of its heads. This is not an easy task to accomplish, as Esil was only able to take off one of the serpent's heads with Suho's help when it came time for her to become a Monarch.[7]
Currently, out of the eight original Monarchs, seven of them have successors in place to inherit their positions of power.

Overview Gallery Ashborn (아스본) was the King of the Dead and the Monarch of Shadows. He was also the Greatest Fragment of Brilliant Light and the strongest of them all.[1]
Appearance
Ashborn was a large and muscular shadow warrior with glowing flame-like purple hair, glowing purple eyes, two curved black horns, and sharp claws. He also wore jet-black armor and a long smoky black cloak, and wielded a pure black sword.
As a Ruler, Ashborn was a burly white knight with large white wings, long silver hair, and glowing white eyes. He also wore silver robes with light tan armor and a grayish-blue cloak, and wielded a white sword with a light tan guard and a gray hilt. Personality
Ashborn cared greatly about life and had a benevolent attitude towards humanity. He also had a profound desire for peace and was weary of the endless war between the Monarchs and the Rulers, leading him to eventually entrust both his ambitions and his powers to a human in hopes of putting an end to the bloodshed once and for all. However, at the same time, he was blindly loyal to the Absolute Being and continued to fight on the latter's behalf even after learning the truth behind his existence.[2] ADVERTISEMENT
History
Eons ago, Ashborn fought alongside the other Rulers in a devastating war with the Monarchs at the behest of their god, the Absolute Being. When his brethren rebelled against the Absolute Being for using them as pawns for his own entertainment, Ashborn was the only one who remained loyal to their creator and attempted to stop them. However, despite his efforts, they easily defeated him and left him for dead.
As his injuries were fatal, Ashborn believed that it was the end for him and prepared for death. However, before he could die, he discovered that the Absolute Being had hidden a monstrous power inside his body and promptly activated it, transforming himself into the Shadow Monarch. With his health fully restored and now even stronger than before, Ashborn returned to the battlefront to continue the fight. But by the time he got back, he found out that he was too late, as the rebellion was already over and the Absolute Being was already dead.
After the Rulers captured Legia, Ashborn realized that the Monarchs would lose if he didn’t step in and decided to offer them his help, an offer that they reluctantly accepted. Unfortunately for Ashborn, even though he managed to stabilize the power balance and keep the war going, his overwhelming powers earned him great fear from both sides and eventually led two of the nine Monarchs, Rakan and Baran, to turn on him. Although Ashborn easily defeated them in battle and killed Baran in retaliation for his treachery, his shadow army was nearly annihilated in the process.[3]
Right after he killed Baran, the Rulers descended in front of Ashborn and asked him for his forgiveness. Although Ashborn initially refused to accept their gesture of peace and furiously demanded that they kill him so that they could finally win the war, the Rulers persisted in their plea and Ashborn was so emotionally overwhelmed that he couldn’t give them an answer. Deciding to seek revenge against Rakan instead, Ashborn left the battlefield and went into hiding to rebuild his shadow army, allowing the Rulers to finally defeat the Monarchs and force them into hiding. However, at some point after this, Ashborn returned to the Monarchs and Antares, the strongest Monarch, was happy to welcome him back to their ranks, as two of the Monarchs were lost and the rest were still greatly weakened from their defeat against the Rulers.
Centuries later, when the Monarchs launched their assault on the human world, Ashborn followed them there out of his own desire to find his place in the universe, as he never felt like he had truly belonged in the chaos world. At the same time, he also started looking for a suitable human vessel with the aid of a mage named Kandiaru, who agreed to help him in exchange for immortality and created a program specifically designed to accomplish this task.
At some point during Kandiaru's search for a human with the right physique and mentality to serve as the Shadow Monarch's vessel, Ashborn noticed that there was one human who had stepped beyond the boundaries of the program Kandiaru created and deviated from all of its rules and expectations: Sung Jinwoo. Despite the fact that Jinwoo was pathetically weak and constantly within death's reach, he somehow always managed to escape with his life and the resolve that he demonstrated in risking his life over and over again for the sake of his family impressed Ashborn so much that he eventually came to believe that Jinwoo was worthy of becoming his vessel. D-Rank Dungeon Arc
Despite Kandiaru's disapproval of his decision, Ashborn chose Jinwoo to be his host a few months before the Monarchs intended on hunting down the Rulers in the human world and started to slowly mold him into a vessel strong enough to fully absorb his powers through the System.
Double Dungeon Arc
When Jinwoo reached level 100, Kandiaru invited him back to the Double Dungeon so that Ashborn could take control of him as his vessel. However, what Kandiaru didn't know at the time was that Ashborn no longer had any intention of taking control of Jinwoo as his vessel and wished to transfer his powers to him instead so that Jinwoo could succeed him as the next Shadow Monarch. As a result, he chose to betray Kandiaru by locking him out of the System, reneging on their deal, and giving Jinwoo his black heart. This would enable Jinwoo to later regain control of his body and kill Kandiaru after the latter realized that Ashborn sold him out and changed sides to the Rulers.[4]
Monarchs War Arc
When Jinwoo was killed by Rakan in battle, he was seemingly transported back in time to when the System first chose him as its Player. As he still retained both his appearance and powers, Jinwoo initially believed that the entire experience was real. However, after speaking to an alternate version of Go Gunhee, Jinwoo eventually realized that it was all just an illusion and yelled at whoever was casting the spell to stop wasting time and show himself. Much to his surprise, the spellcaster turned out to be Ashborn.[5]
Deciding to keep things as brief as possible, Ashborn introduced himself to Jinwoo and explained to him everything he needed to know, including his backstory, the true identity of their enemies, and the reason why Jinwoo was chosen to be both his vessel and his successor. Once he was finished, Ashborn offered Jinwoo two choices: to either live inside his personal fantasy world for eternity or finish his fight with the Monarchs. Naturally, Jinwoo chose the latter option and Ashborn bid him farewell as he ascended back to reality and was revived with the true powers of the Shadow Monarch.
Academy Arc
Upon learning from his wife, Cha Hae-In, that their son Suho was being shunned by his classmates at school for his growing magical powers, Jinwoo would reflect on this and note to himself that the Absolute Being gave Ashborn the powers of the Shadow Monarch in the first place because he wanted a way to destroy his creations if they ever rebelled against him.[6]

B-ranks stand out from lower-ranked Hunters, as they possess significantly enhanced physical abilities, mana reserves, and combat skills. They can hold their own in combat and are usually capable of dealing with weaker monsters on their own. However, they still require teamwork to handle high-level threats, unlike A-ranks or S-ranks, who can dominate battles single-handedly. Notable Hunters

C-rank Hunters are considered the middle tier of the ranking system. They are significantly stronger than D-rank Hunters and far above regular humans, but they are not powerful enough to stand on equal footing with B-rank or higher Hunters.

Unlike D-ranks, who struggle with even moderate threats, C-rank individuals have solid combat skills and can be dependable assets in raid parties. Shortly after a S-Rank Gate spawned in Maryland, Chris was visited and warned by Norma about his impending death from a vision that she had seen in her dreams. Although he was initially unconvinced that there was actually someone strong enough out there to kill him, Chris decided to take her warning seriously after some consideration and accepted a piece of paper from her with Go Gunhee's phone number on it so that he would be able to contact Jinwoo for help in case Norma's vision came true.[2]
International Guild Conference Arc
Several days after Norma's visit, Chris woke up in the middle of the night to find out that it was eerily quiet inside his home, unaware that he had been trapped inside a dimensional gap. When he called out for his enemies to show themselves, Tarnak appeared in front of him, while Rakan and Querehsha came in from behind, and although Chris had no idea who or what any of them were, he knew that they had shown up to kill him.[3]
Realizing that Norma had been right to warn him and that it was too late to call for help, Chris went all out against the three Monarchs in the hopes that he could kill at least one of them before they killed him. Unfortunately, it was a futile effort, as Chris was the only one to die in the ensuing battle. His mutilated body was later discovered in the ruins of his mansion, much to the shock of those who found his remains.[3]
Ragnarok
Several decades later in the revised timeline, Chris would regain both his powers and his status as one of the strongest hunters in the world. However, due to being a Ruler's vessel in the original timeline, he was eventually targeted by the Itarim and subsequently possessed. This eventually forced Thomas Andre to confront and kill him in battle, although his death was kept under wraps for a long period of time before it was finally made public.[4]
The body of Chris was never recovered as what was left was presumed to have turned to ash during the battle with Thomas. Due to his unlikable personality, there was no mourning for the hunter and neither was a funeral arranged. Later it was revealed that the Apostle of Conquest salvaged a fragment of Chris’ corpse and used its magic to clone a replica of the hunter to use as a vessel.
ADVERTISEMENT Abilities
As the vessel of a Ruler and a National Level Hunter, Chris was one of the strongest hunters in the world. Unfortunately, the full scale of his abilities were never displayed in detail, as he was killed in an unseen battle against three Monarchs.[3]
Ruler's Authority: Chris was able to control and move objects via telekinesis. Spiritual Body Manifestation: Chris was able to transform into a one-eyed humanoid monster with flaming light orange hair. The flames he could generate from this ability were so potent that it took 14 S-Rank Hunters to successfully extinguish them.[3]

D-rank Hunters are slightly stronger than E-ranks but still considered weak compared to the majority. They can handle lower-tier Dungeons with proper teamwork, but they aren't powerful enough to make a significant impact on their own.
D-rank is the minimum considered to make a proper living as a Hunter, but they are not as sought after by large guilds as higher-ranked Hunters. Instead, they often work with smaller guilds or freelance in raid parties. Notable Hunters

As they belong to the lowest rank on the ladder, E-Rank Hunters are only slightly stronger than normal humans and are pretty much useless at fighting against magic beasts due to how weak they are. Overview Gallery Go Gunhee (고건희) was a Korean S-Rank Hunter and the Chairman of the Korean Hunters Association.
Appearance
Gunhee was a muscular old man with gray hair, greenish-gray eyes, and numerous scars on his body. When using his powers, his eyes glowed bright yellow. As a high-ranking government official, he was usually seen wearing a three-piece suit. Personality
Gunhee was a humble, open, and honest individual who was very appreciative towards those with good morals, but also very distasteful towards those who only aimed for personal gain. As a result, he had a good relationship with Sung Jinwoo and was widely respected in Korean society. Gunhee was also a workaholic to the point that his job affected his health and had a strong desire to fight for the greater good, as he yearned to be a hunter again and hated the fact that his age was keeping him down. History
Gunhee was originally a chairman of a large corporation.[1][2] After he Awakened, Gunhee easily became the strongest hunter in Korea. Unfortunately, due to his old age, his body began to lose its ability to handle its own strength and as a result, Gunhee was forced to retire after only a few years of working as a hunter. When healing magic was discovered, Gunhee hoped that it could reverse his age and allow him to get back in the game, but to no avail.[3] With no other options left, Gunhee gave up on ever getting back to working as a hunter. Gunhee then shifted his focus on creating a governmental body that supported the hunters in his nation, using his own personal wealth to support the endeavor. He eventually became the Chairman of the Korean Hunters Association.[2] Retesting Rank Arc
After learning that Jinwoo was Korea's 10th S-Rank Hunter, Gunhee attempted to recruit him for the Association to no avail, as Jinwoo knew that he wouldn't be able to keep raiding high-level dungeons if he joined. Realizing that Jinwoo was being honest to him, Gunhee accepted his reasoning and decided to go out for a drink with his right-hand man Jinchul, not wanting to waste his time on his scheduled meeting later that day with several government ministers.[4]
Hunters Guild Gate Arc
Wanting to know more about Jinwoo, Gunhee dug up his file and learned about his troubled past, expressing respect for Jinwoo's resolve to financially support his family as a hunter even though he ran the high risk of getting killed every time he went on a raid. Much to his confusion and surprise, however, Gunhee then learned from Jinchul that Jinwoo had joined a mining team under the Hunters Guild.[5]
Return to Demon Castle Arc
Two days later, Gunhee was present during Jinwoo's official re-evaluation and helped him get inside the building after Lee Minsung's bodyguard attempted to cut him off for disrupting the latter's show for the press.[6]
After learning that the ants of Jeju Island had developed the ability to fly long distances, Gunhee grimly noted that the situation was not looking well for them, especially since the foreign community did not want to help, and started to develop a hopeless feeling after Thomas Andre refused to participate in the raid unless he was paid his fee.[7] However, he was ultimately proven wrong when Goto Ryuji, Japan's strongest hunter, came to Korea to meet him personally and offered to help the Koreans reclaim the island with a simple plan that involved the Japanese hunters using themselves as bait for the ants while the Korean hunters snuck past them and killed the unguarded queen. As he didn't have another choice and the plan looked promising, Gunhee accepted Goto's offer.[8]
Jeju Island Arc
When Jinwoo returned from the Demon Castle, Gunhee called him in and told him about the Korean government's plan to launch a fourth search-and-destroy raid on Jeju Island.[9] Unfortunately, Jinwoo told him that he planned on sitting out of the raid to look after his mother, who had just recently been cured of Eternal Slumber.
During the broadcast of the 4th Jeju Island Raid, Gunhee accidentally crushed the left armrest of his chair in excitement when Jinwoo appeared to fight the Ant King and saved the other Korean S-Rank Hunters from certain death.[10]
Recruitment Arc
When the Jeju Island finally came to a close, Gunhee attended Min Byung-Gyu's funeral and learned from Jinwoo that he was planning on starting his own guild.[11] When a B-Rank Gate spawned in the middle of a highway several hours later, Gunhee called Jinwoo to see if he could take care of it and used his authority as Chairman to allow Jinwoo to break the standard raiding laws and enter the gate alone.[12]
Ahjin Guild Arc
In the aftermath of the bloodbath at Jinah's school, Gunhee met with Jinwoo to inform him that a whole bunch of other nations were trying to recruit him and sincerely asked him to stay in Korea, offering to do everything in his power to provide Jinwoo with whatever resources that he needed in return. Seeing an opportunity here, Jinwoo asked if he could be legally allowed to raid high-ranking gates alone, to which Gunhee promised that he would make it happen.[13]
After the National Assembly approved Jinwoo's request out of the fear that he would defect to another country if they didn't compromise with him, Gunhee sent Jinchul to accompany Jinwoo on his guild's first dungeon raid and make sure that everything worked out safely. When a haggard Jinchul returned several hours later describing the raid as a massacre, Gunhee realized that he'd been right about Jinwoo all along, in that he was an one-man army, and excitedly mused to himself about how his existence would soon change the world.[14]
Double Dungeon Arc
Shortly after a S-Rank Gate suddenly spawned in Tokyo, Gunhee was met in-person by Matsumoto Shigeo, the Chairman of the Japanese Hunters Association. During their meeting, Matsumoto made an offer to hire Jinwoo in exchange for completing giving up the Japanese government's share of the essence stones that had been retrieved from Jeju Island.
However, unfortunately for Matsumoto, Gunhee had known about his plot to use the Jeju Island Raid as means to wipe out the Korean S-Ranks the whole time, due to having learned about it beforehand from a receiver that was recovered intact from Goto's corpse. Enraged that Matsumoto still had the nerve to talk about essence stones after all the crimes he had committed, Gunhee furiously rebuked him for his actions and got so angry at one point that he crushed the receiver in his hand, destroying the table they were using in the process. However, as he knew that Jinwoo desired power over materialistic things like money, Gunhee told Matsumoto to be grateful that Jinwoo would be happy to accept his offer regardless of how much he was paid for it.[15]
International Guild Conference Arc
Several days before the International Guild Conference was scheduled to take place, Gunhee learned from his staff that Liu Zhigang had sent them a request for all the public information they had on Jinwoo at the time. Although stunned to know that the Liu Zhigang had taken an interest to Jinwoo, Gunhee did not want to work with him and ordered his staff to either send him surface-level information or deny his request altogether.[16]
Monarchs War Arc
On the last day of the International Guild Conference back in America, Gunhee was still working at his office late at night. Just before he was about to head home, he suddenly detected some kind of barrier around him and was caught off-guard when Sillad suddenly appeared out of thin air on a couch on the other side of the room.[17]
Although he quickly deduced that he wouldn't be able to win, Gunhee refused to go down without a fight and unleashed his powers in order to buy enough time for Jinwoo to arrive. Although he was able to fight evenly with Sillad at the start, his body eventually hit its limit and left him wide open for Sillad to fatally stab him right through the chest. With no time to lose, Gunhee put his plan in motion and blasted a huge hole in the barrier around him, allowing the ant inside his shadow to jump through and alert Jinwoo for help.[18]
Although his plan worked and forced Sillad to retreat, by the time Jinwoo found him, Gunhee had already lost too much blood and was on the brink of death. When Jinwoo attempted to save him with the Holy Water of Life, Gunhee told him not to and thanked him for coming to his aid. Believing that he wasn't worth saving due to his health, Gunhee asked Jinwoo to remain on the side of humanity in the coming war with the Monarchs and silently accepted his fate as he succumbed to his injuries and bled out, dying right there in his office.[19]
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation one last time on Jinwoo's request, this created a new timeline where humanity never learned of the existence of magic beasts. As a result, in this timeline, Gunhee never became a hunter and thus was never killed by Sillad in battle.[20]
Several years after the Rulers reset the timeline, Gunhee became incurably ill and was secretly visited by Jinwoo in the hospital, who gave him a bottle containing the Holy Water of Life and explained to him how they fought together in the timeline that the Rulers erased. Although he found Jinwoo's story hard to believe, Gunhee decided to take the potion anyway since he had nothing to lose and it enabled him to live 10 years longer than he naturally would have.[21]
10 years later, the Holy Water of Life began to wear off and Gunhee found himself back in the hospital once again. When Jinwoo came to visit and offered to heal him a second time, Gunhee declined, as he had already lived a long life and was content with the extra 10 years that Jinwoo had given him. Instead, he asked Jinwoo to show him the world where they fought together, prompting the latter to give him back his memories of the erased timeline. Upon remembering everything, Gunhee tearfully thanked Jinwoo for their time together and sat back with a smile on his face as his heart suddenly gave out and he peacefully passed away.[22]
Ragnarok
When the Great Cataclysm occurred and the reappearance of Gates, Magic Beasts and Hunters, Woo Jinchul who retained his memories of the original timeline, was the first to realize that the Korean Hunters Association needed to be established in the current timeline if South Korea wanted to survive. However knowing he lacked the political connections and financial power that the deceased Gunhee possessed, Jinchul reached out to Yoo Jinho of Ahjin Soft to help him form the Korean Hunters Association.[2]

Appearance
Goto was a handsome and muscular man with shaggy black hair and a neatly trimmed black beard. When using his powers or agitated, his eyes glowed pure white. During the 4th Jeju Island Raid, he wore his guild's standard black battle uniform and wielded a long red katana. Personality
On the surface, Goto presented himself as a calm, collected, and polite individual who rarely ever showed signs of alarm or anger. However, in reality, he was consumed by overconfidence and had a cruel disregard for human life, as displayed when he left the Korean S-Rank Hunters to die for his own gain and showed no sympathy for his guild members when he discovered their corpses. He was also cunning and inquisitive, as he was the one who hatched the plot to lead the Korean S-Ranks to their deaths and was quick to realize that Jinwoo was far more powerful than he looked.
However, due to his pride and his longtime status as Japan's strongest hunter, Goto had a hard time accepting whenever someone was stronger than him and would flat-out deny that he was weaker than them, even if all evidence pointed to the contrary. This hubristic attitude was what ultimately led Goto to his death in battle against the Ant King, as his ego prevented him from realizing that he was outmatched until it was too late. ADVERTISEMENT
History
About four years after the emergence of the Jeju Island S-Rank Gate, ant attacks began to occur in various cities on the south coast of Japan, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Japanese civilians and hunters. Realizing that the dungeon break on Jeju Island could no longer be ignored and was now a risk to all of Asia, Goto flew to Korea to meet with Go Gunhee and offered to help the Korean government rid the island of the ants and finally reclaim it once and for all. With nothing to lose and with no other choice, Gunhee accepted his offer.[1]
Four days before the launch of the 4th Jeju Island Raid, Goto met up with the rest of the Jeju Island Raid Party inside the Korean Hunters' Gym and witnessed Jinwoo easily incapacitate Atsushi Kumamoto when the latter got carried away in his sparring bout with Cha Hae-In. Suspicious as to whether Jinwoo was actually a mage-type hunter like the official report had said, Goto challenged him to a 1v1 sparring match and discovered that Jinwoo was able to move fast enough to easily dodge his attacks.[2]
Realizing that he wouldn't be able to land a hit on Jinwoo as long as he kept holding back, Goto unleashed his full power and attacked Jinwoo with the intent to kill, giving him a small cut on his cheek. However, before he could try anything else, Jinwoo grabbed his hand. Realizing that Jinwoo hadn't been taking him seriously for the entirety of their match, Goto lost his cool and attempted to attack him again, but Kei and Hoshino restrained him out of fear that he would get injured if the fight progressed and the match ended right there with no official victor.[3]
During the 4th Jeju Island Raid, Goto divided his guild members into four teams. As the raid progressed, Goto suddenly lost contact with his guild members in Teams Charlie and Delta, and stumbled across their corpses in his search for them. Unmoved by their deaths and believing that they died because they were weak, he then relayed the news to Chairman Matsumoto, revealing that they never had any real intention of helping the Koreans reclaim Jeju and had only offered to "help" in order to annihilate the Korean S-Rank Hunters for their own ends.
With their mission having mostly succeeded, Matsumoto ordered Goto and his surviving guildmates to leave the island and abandon the Korean raid team to die. However, before they could do so, they were ambushed by the Ant King, who decapitated Ishida in one strike. Believing that he could win, Goto decided to fight and ordered Hoshino to leave him behind and join up with Team Bravo. However, the Ant King proved to be too strong even for him and swiftly beheaded him as well. ADVERTISEMENT Abilities
As the greatest hunter in Japan, Goto was one of the strongest hunters in all of Asia. He was also drastically more powerful than the Korean S-Rank Hunters who took part in the 4th Jeju Island Raid and was said by Jinwoo to be overwhelmingly stronger than his guildmates. However, despite his status, Goto was no match for Jinwoo during their sparring bout before the 4th Jeju Island Raid and was said to be completely outclassed by Liu Zhigang, China's strongest hunter, in raw power by a Chinese navy captain who'd seen them both in action firsthand.[4]
Enhanced Strength: Goto possessed great physical strength, as displayed by how he was able to cut Jinwoo's skin with his bare hands despite being significantly weaker than him at the time. Enhanced Speed: Goto could move at great speeds, as displayed by how he was able to move fast enough to use his hand like a blade and react in time to the Ant King's first attack when the monster suddenly ambushed him from behind.

Three days after a field dungeon suddenly appeared at the Hankuk University Art Museum—and was swiftly cleared by a newly Awakened Hunter named Sung Suho—Han Jaehyuk and his team visited Suho in the hospital to thank him emotionally for saving the people at the museum. During the visit, Han explained that he had come to assess Suho’s rank, as the media was eager to learn more about the new Hunter. Han personally conducted the evaluation and determined that Suho was an E-Rank. While his team expressed disappointment at the low ranking, Han Jaehyuk still found Suho admirable for his courage in risking his life and successfully fighting off the magic beasts.[3]
Seoul Station Field Arc
After the destruction of the base of the Hyena Guild, Han Jaehyuk led an investigation team from the Association to investigate how the guild was involved in the Stardust trade. From Jaehyuk's investigation a ledger was found, confirming that the Hyena Guild was indeed responsible for distributing Stardust and using it to hook Hunters to use it to strengthen themselves in order to clear higher dungeons. Jaehyuk and his team though found that the ledger contained the names of Hunters who bought Stardust from the guild bit also were crossed off and reported missing. Oddly the entries into the ledger indicated that everyone someone on the ledger vanished the guild somehow obtain a large amount of Stardust to sell. The investigator came to the conclusion that the Hyena Guild were trading humans for Stardust, but was confused on why people were being used as medium of trade instead of money.
Shortly later Jaehyuk received news that the Stardust Factory was located at the Seoul Station Field. By the time he and his team arrived, they everything already resolved and over. From the testimonies of the survivors and the Hunters who rescued them, the Team Leader and his people learned that demons were involved in the production of Stardust. Not only that someone was still fighting in the Dungeon against the demons according to one of the Hunters, Lim Do-Gyu.
Jaehyuk assure the assistant teacher that he would save his friend, Sung Suho, and as he readied his men to head into the dungeon to assist Suho, he asked Do-Gyu on what rank Suho was and was dismally disappointed to hear that his friend was just a E-Rank Collector.
Upon entering the field dungeon, Jaehyuk and his men encountered Suho and the recently Shadow Brocky. Suho was mistaken for a demon as he was wearing the Crow Mask and was attacked by Jaehyuk while the rest of the Association Hunters fought Brocky. Having no choice but to defend himself, Suho fought Jaehyuk. And despite the young Hunter suppressing his power, he still managed to overpower the C-Rank Hunter by embedding him into a wall and causing him to faint from the blow. His show of force was enough to make the Association Hunters stop fighting and listen to him explain the situation.[4]
By the time Jaehyuk woke up, he was in a hospital bed. Confused on his surroundings he asked a subordinate on why he was admitted to a hospital and to his shock was told that he fainted after being hit with one punch. Thinking it was due to the crow masked demon he was fighting, he was soon told that was indeed the Hunter that the team had come to rescue and told him that it was a simple misunderstanding. Still upon learning that Suho claimed to be a E-Rank summoner, Jaehyuk grew perplexed on how strong Suho was. He did not think Suho was just a E-Rank given his power, and when he learned he was the Sung Suho who he recently measured when he awakened. Thinking perhaps the measurement was wrong, Jaehyuk accepted his loss and was eager to get to the bottom of Suho's newfound power, looking forward to what kind of Hunter he would become.[5]
Retesting Rank Arc
Jaehyuk and his team would arrive at the Paju Field, a dungeon reserved for the Fiend Guild, after Baek Miho of the White Tiger Guild delivered a member of the Hyena Guild who after being interrogated revealed that Lee Minsung was secretly building a Stardust Lab at the Paju Industrial Complex. Before calling for reinforcements, Jaehyuk wanted to gather physical evidence and so led his team of five into searching the area. They discovered several kidnapped people held in a container, among them Oh Seonjoo. Seeing that the area was being flooded by Blue Mist and the civilians were being at risk of turning into Mist Burns, Jaehyuk prioritized evacuating the civilians. As his team were using Stealth to avoid detection, the plan was to silently open the prison door and include all civilians in the skill and escape outside the facility where they would have a better chance to hide from the kidnappers.
Jaehyuk had just managed to break the lock when they were attacked from behind by Park Jongcheol. Before Jaehyuk and his team could retaliate, Park Jongcheol used a child as a hostage to force the Association Hunters to surrender. Undoing their skills at Park Jongcheol's order, Jaehyuk and his team were helpless to stop Jongcheol from harming the child, until an unseen attacker began to dismember the Hunter.[6]
The attack was from a being known as Crow Mask identity, who was really Suho, though the screaming from Jongcheol attracted the attention of more corrupt members of the Fiend Guild in the facility. Crow Maskhad Jaehyuk and his people stay with the hostages in the crate as it was a better defensible position. Once the crate door was sealed by Arachne, Crow Mask left the protection of the hostages to Jaehyuk as he went to confront the Fiend Guild Hunters in Lee Minsung’s pocket. From the safety of the crate, Jaehyuk witnessed Crow Mask transform into a beastly humanoid who then began tearing apart the criminals.
Jaehyuk’s team watching with him thought it was similar to Baek Yoonho’s beast transformation, though the team leader noted there was a difference in power. And when one of the Association Hunter mentioned hearing the Beast King Crow inheriting the Beast King power at the Magic Field, Jaehyuk realized that Beast King Crow and Suho were one and the same.[7]
While watching the slaughter, by Crow Mask and Arachne, some of the Association Hunters expressed fear towards him, wondering if he was really human. Jaehyuk came to Suho’s defense by claiming such bloodlust and loss of rationality was normal among those with Beast Transformation skills.
Later the B-Rank tanker Kwak Dooyoung joined the fray by attacking the crate containing the hostages and Association Hunters, Jaehyuk stepped up to defend the crate by using Iron Wall to prevent Dooyoung from crushing everyone inside. He bought enough time for Suho to focus his attention on the tanker and kill him.[8]
After reinforcements from the Association arrived to arrested the surviving members of the Fiend Guild running the Stardust Lab, Jaehyuk hurriedly transported all the hostages to the hospital. Afterwards he returned to the Stardust Lab to conduct a thorough search to seize all the evidence. Jaehyuk then approached Suho asking if he could have a few words. And while Suho was willing to talk, he suddenly had to leave due to an emergency. As Suho left Jaehyuk tried to ask for the Hunter to stay, offering a reward, but Suho had left. Though his words did not escape Beru, who appeared and grabbed Jaehyuk by the collar to make the Association agent hand over the reward,[9]

The Team Leader raided Lee Minsung's residence, only to find it vacant. Jaehyuk then realized that Lee Minsung planned to escape overseas then ordered his people to check all the CCTVs and black boxes to locate the Villain.[10]

While Jaehyuk was initially tracking Lee Minsung, he received orders from the higher ups at the Association of a new crisis. That dozens of Villains were attacking civilians. Jaehyuk and his team were mobilized to contain the violence. At the scene Jaehyuk realized that the Villains were human but some sort of mutants. His team who were struggling to help evacuate the civilians found themselves slowly being overrun by the monsters. Though to Jaehyuk's relief they were saved by members of the Fiend Guild under the leadership of Lim Tae-Gyu.[11] And was left in awe at the skills of the Hunters as they pinned the mutants to the ground.[12]

At the time of the notorious Thomas Andre, and with his aide Laura arriving in Seoul, Jaehyuk and his team waited for him at the airport. Due to him being an S-Rank Hunter and crossing international borders without permission Jaehyuk informed Thomas that he was in breach of international law. While Jaehyuk was terrified of the powerful Hunter, he stood his ground. However his words meant little to Thomas who casually ignored him as he proceeded to take a taxi to seek out Sung Suho.[13]
Jaehyuk would later tail the foreigners to Suho’s residence. From afar he and his team watch both Thomas and Suho meet each other though were relieved to see things remain non-hostile.
After the Americans returned for a second visit to the C-Rank Hunter’s residence they found he was absent. Thomas already knowing Jaehyuk was following him and Laura called him out from the shadows to demand to know where Suho’s whereabouts. Jaehyuk informed the S-Rank Hunter that the young man was heading to the Hunter market in Euljiro.
Jaehyuk and his team escorted Thomas and Laura there via a car prepared by the Association. Upon arriving at Euljiro they found the place was in the middle of a dungeon break. Though they found that the dungeon break was already being resolved by the nearby Hunters with the boss the Blue Venom-Fanged Kasaka having been defeated.[14]

He then informed Suho of the pressing situation of the 500 escaped Villains of Jisan Prison. As the Association was understaff to recapture and deal with the mass escape, other guilds were being reached out for cooperation.
For Suho, Jaehyuk offered the temporary title of Association-Certified Bounty Hunter which would give the young Hunter authority to enter the territories of other guilds. After Suho accepted the title, Jaehyuk provided him with all the basic details on the Villains he would be hunting.[16]

He would arrive with his team at the Yangpyeong branch where he found all its staff forced to be confined in their offices by a woman named Arsha who informed Jaehyuk on the situation on Suho’s behalf. Jaehyuk was disgusted that such a thing was happening right beneath the Association’s nose. Then there was the matter of the Starpiece necklaces that were in circulation, which were used as entry passes into the Black Market. However after being pressed by Arsha on how he could not remove his own necklace due to being under its influence, and after Arsha ripped it off his neck, he finally realized that nefarious implications of the necklaces. And after being told by Arsha that the artifacts were tools of the Outer God Cult, the mention of the cult made Jaehyuk recall his senior who originally was the former branch manager at Yangpyeong. And how he suddenly quit his job after joining the cult.[1] While thinking about Kim Chul, Jaehyuk recalled how his senior was always disappointed of his posting at Yangpyeong as it was too peaceful for his talents.[2]
Jaehyuk mobilized the Association and its forces to the Yangpyeong branch to attack the Black Market after being notified of its existence. However Suho informed him that he already taken care of the ringleaders of the Black Market, killing most of the demons and capturing the Hunters who were using the market for profit. All that was left for the Association was to arrest the criminals and fine them.
Given that it was the Association being partly responsible for allowing the Black Market to exist no thanks to the corrupt Yangpyeong branch manager, Suho expressed he had little trust and faith in the Association as they were always a step behind in these incidents. To repair some damage between Suho and the Association Jaehyuk offered to hand over all the Starpieces and Stardust necklaces that the Association confiscated at the Black Market. This satisfied Suho as he intended to use the material to exchange it for gold in the System.[17]
North Korea Arc
During the reveal to the public that Sung Suho was Cha Hae-In’s child, Jaehyuk interrupted the reunion between son and mother. He formally asked if Hae-In could be evaluated so that her Hunter Rank could be registered. Due to Hae-In high popularity as a former Olympic gold medalist and also apparently being a powerful for Hunter, riding a dragon, and in front of the media, Jaehyuk tried to be as polite as possible to avoid a backlash against the Association.
Hae-In complied with the official and soon it was revealed that the female Hunter was an S-Rank. Though he was unable to stop her when she decided on the spot to give her a son to North Korea, going against international law.[18]

Yoo Jin-Ho Raid Party Arc
When Jinho went looking for people to recruit for his raids with Jinwoo, Song-Yi happened to get roped in on his offer and decided to drop out of school after learning about how much money Jinho was paying her for standing outside a gate and doing nothing. Although Jinwoo didn't recognize her due to his unfamiliarity with his sister's friends, he was still confused as to why she was a hunter at such a young age and with such a low rank.
Red Gate Arc
As Song-Yi used to be Jinah's classmate, Jinwoo eventually found out about her from her former teacher and decided to persuade her into going back to school by exposing her to the dangerous reality of the job. To that end, he reached out to his contacts in the White Tiger Guild and got both himself and Song-Yi a slot in one of the guild's training exercises. Unfortunately, things went horribly wrong when the gate that they walked into turned out to be a Red Gate, stranding them on a frozen, snow-covered landscape.
With no time to waste, Kim Chul took most of the raid party with him to find and kill the dungeon boss, leaving Song-Yi with Jinwoo, Heejin, and two other C-Rank Hunters behind to wait for them in the woods. This move ultimately saved her life, as Jinwoo easily slaughtered all the ice bears that came their way while Kim Chul's entire squad was wiped out by Yetis and Ice Elves. After Jinwoo killed Baruka, the dungeon boss, Song-Yi was seen smiling in relief as she exited the gate and returned to the human world.
Although she was one of the five people who made it back alive, Song-Yi was left rattled by the experience. As a result, she went back to school soon after, although she still kept in touch with Heejin.

Appearance
Hwang was a large and muscular man with black hair in a buzz cut. When agitated or using his powers, his eyes glowed bright red. During his trip to Korea, he wore a red t-shirt and gray jeans with a gold chain around his neck. While he was torturing Jinho, he wore black pants, a red undershirt, and a grayish-blue jacket with a flaming skull imprinted on the back. Personality
Hwang was a selfish and murderous meathead with little respect for human life. He was consumed by overconfidence, as displayed by how he genuinely believed that he stood a chance against opponents who were obviously far stronger than him, such as Sung Il-Hwan and Sung Jinwoo, and never even considered the possibility of losing against either of them. Hwang was also a bully who enjoyed abusing his power and targeting those who were weaker than him, an attitude that he shared with his brother.
Despite his despicable personality, Hwang respected power above anything else, as displayed when he nervously backed off after Thomas Andre intimidated him into keeping his mouth shut with a show of force. He could also be cunning if he wanted to and deliberately abducted Jinho despite having been warned not to, as he knew that Thomas would step in on his behalf and let him evade the consequences of his crimes if Jinwoo tried to kill him. However, since Hwang clearly never considered the possibility that Jinwoo was even more powerful than Thomas, this proved to be a mistake that later led to his well-deserved death. ADVERTISEMENT
History
At some point prior to the start of the main storyline, Hwang was offered an upgrade by Norma Selner and moved to America without a second thought, eventually joining the Scavenger Guild under Thomas Andre. This move caused the Koreans to consider him a traitor and his reputation plummeted back home in Korea as a result, with even his brother resenting him for his choice to abandon his homeland for money and power. Dungeon & Lizards Arc
Several years after his defection to America, Hwang's brother was suddenly murdered in a raid gone wrong. Correctly deducing that either Jinwoo or Jinho, the two survivors of the raid, were responsible for his brother's death, Hwang then flew all the way to Korea to hunt them down and kill them.
Red Gate Arc
Upon arriving in Korea, Hwang was greeted by Woo Jinchul, who had been sent to pick him up and take him wherever he wished.[1] Although he was surprised to see Woo, Hwang made it clear to him that he intended on avenging his brother's death and warned him against any attempts to stop him. Using his phone, Dongsoo then tracked down Jinwoo's location through his hunter's license and upon discovering that the latter was currently at a gate, he instructed Woo to drive there immediately.
Unfortunately for Hwang, by the time he caught up with Jinwoo, the gate that he turned out to be at was a red gate that had been bought out earlier by the White Tiger Guild. Believing that Jinwoo was as good as dead and that he had come all the way to Korea for nothing, Hwang nearly got into a fight with Baek Yoonho after deducing that Ahn Sangmin, one of his employees, knew something about Jinwoo and was trying to hide the details from him. Realizing that he wouldn't be able to get what he wanted without causing a scene, Hwang ultimately decided to give it up and returned to America the following day.[2]
Demon Castle Arc
Hwang Dongsoo was called in to interrogate Sung Il-Hwan who had emerged from a Gate, since Il-Hwan had poor English and only spoke Korean, Hwang could speak Korean due to being born there, Hwang spoke with Ill-Hwan and refused to answer any of the mans questions, Il-Hwan warned Hwang about an incoming threat but Hwang told him that the planet was full of powerful hunters who would face the threat, Il-Hwan noted that Hwang looked really strong but even he wasn't going to be enough. Hwang then read his bio and saw that he was married and had 2 children one was Jinwoo Sung, Hwang asked him his sons name and Il-Hwan answered him, Il-Hwan then demanded why Hwang had a malicious expression after mentioning his son, Hwang told Il-Hwan that his son was dead and he will be joining him. Il-Hwan then brutally beat Hwang to a pulp and causing massive damage to the building they were in. Hwang then awoke in a hospital and remembered Il-Hwan's warning him to stay away from his family or else death wouldn't save him.
Jeju Island Arc
When word got out that the Korean government was launching a fourth raid on Jeju Island, Hwang sent a request to the Korean Hunters Association to allow him to join the Jeju Island Raid Party so that he could get his revenge on Jinwoo for killing his brother. Unfortunately for Hwang, the Association knew what he was really up to and subsequently denied his request, forcing him to remain behind in the States.[3]
International Guild Conference Arc
When it was announced by the Bureau that Jinwoo would be representing Korea at the upcoming International Guild Conference, Thomas summoned Hwang to his office and warned him not to mess with Jinwoo. Although Hwang seemingly agreed to his request, in reality, he had already hatched a plan over the past month to get his revenge for his brother's death by targeting Jinho instead. As a result, while Jinwoo was away at the Bureau, Hwang kidnapped Jinho from his hotel and brought him to an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city.[4] However, thanks to his shadow soldiers, Jinwoo found Hwang rather easily and used Shadow Exchange to teleport to his location.[5]
Despite being clearly outmatched, Hwang refused to back down and attempted to attack Jinwoo after the latter attacked him first and refused to answer his questions. Unfortunately, this amounted to nothing, as Jinwoo easily swatted his punches aside and brutally pummeled him in the ensuing skirmish. However, before Jinwoo could kill Hwang, Thomas arrived at the factory and ordered the former to let him go. However, Jinwoo refused and simply flung Hwang into the distance to deal with later.[6]
After Jinwoo defeated Thomas, he killed Hwang and extracted his shadow, which he named Greed, to add to his army.[7]
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation one last time on Jinwoo's request, this created a new timeline where humanity never learned of the existence of magic beasts. As a result, in this timeline, Hwang never became a hunter and was never killed by Jinwoo like he was in the original timeline.[8]
Ragnarok
Several decades later in the revised timeline, Hwang would regain his powers and become a hunter once again. However, not long after this event, Hwang would become a servant of the Itarim, which eventually forced Il-Hwan to kill him for a second time and Jinwoo's son Suho to turn him into a shadow soldier all over again.
