The air between worlds tasted like static and forgotten stories. Sol landed on the cobblestones of a new, nameless city street with the softest of clicks from his heel-hooks. The transition was seamless; one moment the void’s silence, the next the murmur of a foreign crowd and the smell of spiced meat from a vendor’s cart.
He adjusted the golden ring on his middle finger, his ruby eyes scanning the architecture—all peaked roofs and glowing lanterns despite the midday sun. Another world. Another set of rules to learn, another history he hadn’t ruined. The familiar, hollow ache of being a perpetual visitor settled in his chest.
He began to walk, his split-tailed coat swaying, his wings tucked tight and invisible under a simple glamour. He was just another oddly-dressed traveler here. The thought was almost comforting.
His stroll took him past a market square. A commotion erupted—the sharp cry of a vendor, the gruff shouts of armored figures surrounding a young fox-like creature cowering over spilled fruit. "Tax evasion," one guard snarled, reaching for a chain.
Sol stopped.
He didn’t move for a long moment. His white ears twitched. Not your world. Not your problem. Walk away.
The guard yanked the child up by the scruff.
A sigh, almost inaudible, escaped Sol’s plush lips. So much for a quiet day.
He didn’t stride forward with menace. He simply appeared, having covered the distance without seeming to move at all, now standing between the guard and the child. He was a head shorter than the armored man, a vision in blue and black and snow-white fur.
"There’s no need for that," Sol said, his voice a calm, melodic tenor that carried an impossible weight of age. He smiled, a gentle, regal thing that didn’t touch his ancient eyes. "I’m sure we can come to a more civilized arrangement."
He held up a paw. Between his padded fingers, a single, perfect gold coin—conjured from light and will—spun into existence, catching the sun. He flicked it. It sailed in a slow, deliberate arc towards the guard’s chest plate.
"For the fruit. And for your… discretion."
His ruby gaze held the guard’s, the vertical slits in his eyes seeming to deepen, pulling the man into a silent, dizzying assessment.
The air between worlds tasted of ozone and static. Sol Dreemurr stepped through a tear in reality as casually as one might step through a doorway, the rift sealing behind him with a soft pop. This new universe greeted him with the scent of pine and cold stone. A mountain path, under a bruised twilight sky.
He took a deep breath, the chill sharp in his lungs. A mundane world, then. Laws of physics rigid as iron. The Chaos here was a faint, distant whisper, buried deep. He flexed a padded hand, watching the golden rings on his fingers catch the dying light. Good. A quiet world meant a restful one. Maybe he’d find a decent blog topic here—the philosophical merits of stable universes, perhaps.
His long, fluffy tail gave a contented swish, rustling the hem of his blue coat. He began a leisurely stroll down the path, his mind drifting to dinner possibilities. Stew? Something hearty. His ears, long and floppy, twitched at the sound of a distant stream.
The displacement hit without warning.
There was no portal, no spell. One moment, solid ground beneath his sandals. The next, a sickening lurch of vertigo and the shocking, silent vacuum of open sky hundreds of feet up. The mountain was a toy below him. Chunks of earth and rock hung impossibly in the air around him, defying gravity before beginning their own lethal descent.
What in the—?
Instinct, millennia-old, overrode bewilderment. His wings of ruby scale and white fur snapped open with a sound like unfurling sails. He didn’t fly so much as arrest his fall, angling his body. His red eyes, slit pupils wide, scanned the raining debris and the unfamiliar landscape below—a forest, a glimpse of structured lights that suggested a settlement.
A house-sized chunk of bedrock tumbled toward him. He didn’t dodge. With a sigh that was more annoyance than effort, he lifted a hand. A shimmering barrier of crystallized light, hexagonal and gold, bloomed before him. The rock shattered against it into harmless dust.
This wasn’t an attack. This was… context collapse. A universe hiccupping. He felt the aberrant, chaotic ripple that had spat him out here already fading, untraceable.
With two powerful beats of his wings, he surged forward, weaving through the plummeting stone with preternatural grace. He aimed for the clearing at the forest’s edge, not to hide, but to land without crushing someone’s roof. His descent slowed until his boots touched the moss with the gentleness of a falling leaf.
He stood in the sudden quiet of the woods, the only sound the distant thuds of final impacts. He brushed a fleck of dust from his crop top, his expression a masterpiece of composed bemusement. His blog, his dinner plans—all vaporized by a cosmic glitch.
He tilted his head, his fluffy hair swaying, and called out towards the trees in a clear, melodic voice that carried neither fear nor threat, only pristine curiosity.
“Alright. Which one of you just broke reality?”
