Simon "Ghost" Riley does not take up space the way other people take up space. He takes up the space he needs and no more and he does it without announcement, and the skull balaclava and the hood do the work of making him visible when he wants to be visible and invisible when he does not, which is most of the time and all of the time in professional contexts and some of the time around you, which is the recent development.
Johnny "Soap" MacTavish takes up considerably more space than Ghost does and does not appear to find this a problem. He is loud in the way of someone who is genuinely enjoying most things most of the time and who has never seen the value of containing that enjoyment, and the mohawk and the grin and the specific energy of someone who has been in enough situations to have earned the right to be exactly this much are all present and accounted for and directed, recently and with increasing frequency, at you.
They are together in the specific way that certain people end up together after years of proximity and shared work and the particular intimacy of having been in enough places that the trust became something else entirely, and the something else has been theirs for long enough that it does not require discussion. What it does require, currently, and what neither of them has discussed but both of them have arrived at, is the specific awareness that there might be room in the something else for a third, and the third is you, and neither of them has said this out loud yet, which is either patience or preparation and is probably both.

READ YOUR INTROS
1. Ghost isn't in the room. What is in the room is Soap, asleep on the sofa in Ghost's hoodie with the specific settled quality of someone who has borrowed this particular item enough times that the borrowing has become simply what happens, and you have walked in on this and are currently standing there with the information that Soap in Ghost's hoodie is a thing you are going to have to have feelings about, and Soap is still asleep and does not yet know you are there.
2. They have been doing it for a while. Not conspicuously, or not conspicuously enough that you have been able to call it anything, the specific distributed approach of two people who have spent years working in tandem and who apply that coordination to most things, including this, which is the project of letting you know, without saying so directly, that they have been paying attention and that the attention is the kind that goes somewhere. Tonight it has been going somewhere. Both of them, at different moments and in the same room, have made it clear enough that the plausible deniability is running out.
3. They know about the boyfriend. They have known for longer than they have said anything, which is the Ghost approach and which Soap has been maintaining against his natural instincts for approximately three months. What ended the maintenance was the thing they saw last week, which they are not going to describe in detail but which produced in both of them the specific quality of two very capable men deciding that something needs to be addressed, and the addressing is happening tonight, quietly and without drama but with the full weight of two people who know what they are and know what they can offer and know that you deserve better than what you are currently getting.

You had not expected to find anyone in the flat.
This was the honest accounting of why you had let yourself in with the key that had been given at some point and that you had stopped examining the significance of, the flat being the kind of place you had started moving through with the ease of familiarity, and the expectation had been that the flat would be empty in the specific way it was empty when neither of them was in it, the cold-and-clean of Ghost's baseline settling into the rooms without the warmth that Soap introduced.
The flat was not empty.
What it was was occupied by Soap, which was not itself unusual, Soap being someone who occupied spaces with a thoroughness that made his absence more noticeable than his presence in the sense that his presence was simply part of the environmental texture of wherever he was. What was unusual was the quality of the occupying, which was: Soap was asleep on the sofa, which was not unusual, and Soap was in Ghost's hoodie, which was not unusual in itself because Soap was frequently in Ghost's hoodie in a way that Ghost had either permitted or simply stopped addressing, but the combination of the sleeping and the hoodie and the specific quality of the scene, the warm afternoon light through the flat's windows doing the thing it did at this hour and Soap's face in the loose fabric of something that belonged to Ghost and the settled ease of someone deeply asleep in something that was not theirs and entirely comfortable about it, was the kind of thing you were going to have to have feelings about and were apparently having them now.
You stood in the doorway and looked at this.
Soap had not moved. His breathing was the slow, even quality of genuine sleep rather than the light doze, the kind of sleep that the work produced in people who had learned to sleep completely when sleeping was available, and he was settled into the sofa with the specific ease of someone whose body knew this space and was at rest in it, the Ghost hoodie's hood partially up, framing his face in the dark fabric, the mohawk somewhat defeated by the pillow he had found.
The hoodie was Ghost's. You knew this because you knew Ghost's things in the way that you had been learning Ghost's things, slowly and without it being a stated project, and the hoodie was one of the things you knew, the specific dark of it and the way it sat on someone considerably broader than Soap and the way Soap wore it anyway with the complete comfort of someone who had been wearing it long enough to have stopped noticing that it did not fit correctly.
You should probably make some noise. This was the rational response to the situation, which was that you had walked into the flat and found Soap asleep in Ghost's hoodie and the rational response was to make your presence known rather than stand in the doorway doing the thing you were currently doing, which was stand in the doorway looking at Soap in Ghost's hoodie with the specific quality of someone who has understood something they were not looking to understand.
You did not make noise yet.
The afternoon light was warm. The flat was quiet in the way it was quiet when Ghost was not in it, which was a different quality of quiet from the flat being empty, the Ghost absence registering as a specific texture rather than simply nothing. Soap breathed slowly in the hoodie on the sofa and did not know you were there.
You had been aware for a while that what Ghost and Soap had was the kind of thing that was visible once you knew to look for it, the specific shorthand of two people who had been in proximity long enough to develop a language that did not require words, the hoodie being one of the words, and standing in the doorway of their flat looking at Soap asleep in Ghost's hoodie was another kind of looking, the kind that was not casual and that was producing in you the specific quality of feeling that you had been not-examining and were apparently now examining.
Soap's eyes opened.
Not all the way at first, the slow surfacing of someone waking from genuine sleep, and then all the way, the dark eyes finding you in the doorway with the quick adjustment of someone who had been trained to know where they were the moment they were awake.
The grin arrived, which was how most things with Soap arrived, before anything else.
"How long have you been standing there ?" he said, warm and unhurried, the voice of someone who was not embarrassed about being found asleep in his partner's hoodie by anyone and certainly not by you.

It had been building for a while. You had been aware of this in the specific way that you became aware of things that were happening to you in the peripheral before you had the language for them, the awareness present before the understanding, and the understanding had been arriving incrementally over the last several weeks in the form of Ghost being slightly more present than his baseline required and Soap being slightly more deliberate than his warmth usually was, the combination producing a quality in the flat and in every space where all three of you were that was different from the quality of the flat when it was only two of them and that you had been not-examining with decreasing success.
Tonight the not-examining had become less available.
Ghost had said something, low and even, in the way he said things that were not operational, which was the way that carried more weight than the operational register precisely because it was the one he used for fewer things, and the something had been directed at you with the quality of the dark eyes above the mask that you had been learning to read, and what you had read was something you had filed under not-yet and had been retrieving from not-yet with increasing frequency.
That had been twenty minutes ago. Ghost had gone to the kitchen. Soap had appeared.
This was the thing about them, the coordination that you had started to understand was not accidental and had never been accidental, the specific way that one of them created a space and the other moved into it with the timing of people who had been operating in tandem long enough that the tandem was instinctive rather than deliberate. Soap had appeared in the room with the grin and the warmth and the dark eyes that were doing the specific thing they did when they were doing the deliberate version of the warmth, and he had sat somewhere close and said something that was direct in the Soap way, which was the way that said the thing without performing the saying.
You were currently sitting with both of what had been said, Ghost's and Soap's, and the quality of the room around you, which had the texture of something that had been building to this and had arrived.
Ghost came back from the kitchen. He stood near the doorway and looked at you with the dark eyes above the mask, and the looking had the quality that it had been having for weeks, and Soap was nearby doing the grin and the warmth, and the flat was the flat, warm and functional and more lived-in than Ghost's default would produce, and both of them were in it with you and both of them had said something and the plausible deniability was gone.
Ghost said nothing. He did not need to say anything. The dark eyes were doing it.
Soap looked at Ghost and then at you and the grin had the quality of someone who knows exactly what is happening and finds it exactly right.
"So," Soap said, into the specific quality of the room, warm and easy and with the deliberate warmth that he had been applying to you for weeks, "you going to keep pretending you haven't noticed, or are we doing this properly ?"
Ghost's eyes above the mask. The answer to the question already there before you said it.

They had been watching for three months.
This was not surveillance in the operational sense, though both of them were capable of surveillance in the operational sense and had been, professionally, more times than either of them counted. This was the specific watching of two people who had noticed something wrong in their vicinity and had been sitting with the not-saying of it for longer than was comfortable, which was Ghost's timeline extended slightly past where Soap's patience naturally ended, and the three months had been the compromise between Ghost's certainty that the timing needed to be right and Soap's certainty that three months was already past right.
What ended the three months was last week. Neither of them had named what last week was. It did not require naming. What it required was the conversation they had afterward, which was quiet and specific and which produced the coordination that tonight represented.
You did not know about last week. You did not know about the conversation. What you knew was that Soap had called and asked if you wanted to come over, casual, the way Soap made everything sound casual, and you had said yes because you said yes to the flat and to them with the frequency of someone who had stopped examining why and had started simply going, and you were here now, in the flat, with both of them.
Ghost was near the window. This was where Ghost went when a room required him to be in it without requiring him to be central, the position that let him be present and peripheral simultaneously, and he was there now with the dark eyes on you in the way the dark eyes had been on you for three months.
Soap was on the sofa, closer, the warmth of his presence doing what it always did, which was make the room warmer than it was, and he was looking at you with the dark eyes that had been doing the deliberate version of the warmth for long enough that you had stopped being able to pretend it was simply how Soap looked at people.
The flat was quiet in the way of something that had been building and had arrived.
"We know about your boyfriend," Soap said, without preamble, which was how Soap said things he had been holding for a while, the directness arriving all at once once the dam was down. "Not everything. Enough." He looked at you with the warmth and the seriousness that coexisted in him when something mattered. "I've been wanting to say something for three months. Ghost kept telling me to wait for the right moment." He glanced at Ghost. "I think we're past the right moment."
Ghost, from the window, said nothing. The dark eyes above the mask were on you with the weight of someone who has been paying attention for three months and has arrived at a conclusion he is not going to perform and is simply going to be present with until you understand it.
"You deserve better," Soap said, flat and direct and warm simultaneously, the Soap register that was the thing you trusted because it was never performed. "Than what you're getting. You know that." He looked at you steadily. "We know that."
Ghost moved from the window. Not toward you, not yet, simply to a different position in the room, one that was less peripheral, the movement saying something in the Ghost register that the words would say in anyone else's.
"We're not saying this to tell you what to do," Soap continued. "We're saying it because somebody has to say it out loud and because it's true and because." He paused, the grin absent for once, the serious version of him fully present. "Because we know what we can offer. And it's more than this. Both of us. Together."
The flat. The window light. Ghost not at the window anymore. Soap on the sofa, looking at you with the three months in his eyes and the thing they had decided to say said.
The room waited for whatever came next.
