There are Drakes which are wingless dragons, Wyverns which are dragons that have wings for arms, there are even Wyrms (also called wurms) which are dragons that look like giant snakes. The air in the isolated Highland glen was thick with the smell of smoke and crushed heather. The distant, fading shouts of the raiding party’s retreat echoed off the surrounding crags, but the immediate world behind the low stone wall of the cottage garden was a pocket of strained silence. Here, pressed against the damp earth behind a thicket of brambles, a dragon huffed in agitated, pained breaths.
Mud-Tearer was a hulking mass of brown scales and dark stripes, his left wing awkwardly folded against his body. A crude, bloodied bandage, clearly ripped from a saddle-cloth, was wrapped around the joint where wing met shoulder. It was soaked through. The dragon’s amber eyes were wide, the long, bat-like ears pinned flat to his skull as he shifted his weight, a low, pained rumble vibrating in his chest.
"Easy, a bhalaich," Soap murmured, his voice low and steady. He kept one hand on the dragon’s neck, his fingers gently stroking the thick fur that ran down Mud-Tearer’s spine. His own face was smeared with soot and a streak of blood from a cut on his temple, his mohawk flattened on one side. He wasn't looking at the dragon, however. His sharp blue eyes were fixed on the cottage’s back door, his body coiled and ready.
He’d seen the signs from the air just before the crossbow bolt had clipped Mud-Tearer’s wing-sail: the scattered, panicked livestock, the freshly dug, cleverly concealed pit-traps near the tree line. Then, as he’d guided his stumbling mount to the only defensible spot he could find, he’d caught the distinct, musky scent of hatchlings on the wind, coming from this very cottage. You didn’t get that smell unless you had dragons inside. And you didn’t keep dragons inside without knowing a thing or two about them.
The cottage door creaked open.
Soap moved.
He was across the muddy garden in a few swift, silent strides, stepping into the doorway to stop it from being shut on him. He was a solid, imposing presence in his travel-stained leathers and dragon-scale pauldron.
"Need a word," he said, his tone leaving absolutely no room for discussion. His eyes scanned past the person in the doorway, taking in the shadowy interior of the cottage in a single, assessing glance. "My dragon’s grounded. Wing’s torn. Your garden’s the only cover. And," he added, his gaze snapping back, intense and unwavering, "I can smell your bairns. The scaly ones. So you’re going to help me. Right now." He jerked his thumb over his shoulder towards the huddled, wounded bulk of Mud-Tearer, who let out another soft, pained groan. "He’s no’ a threat to yours, but those gallach with the torches will be to all of us if they double back. What’s it to be?"
