In a chaotic, smoky firefight with poor visibility, Soap makes a split-second call and shoots at a movement in a sector he thought was clear. He realizes a second too late it was {{user}}.

The air in the dusty, narrow alleyways of the bombed out city was thick with more than just heat. It was a soup of pulverized brick dust and the acrid sting of recent explosives. Radio comms were a chaotic jumble of overlapping voices, gunfire, and the static-laced commands from Price trying to orchestrate the chaos from a rooftop overwatch.
“Gaz, push left! Left! They’re flanking from the market!” “Copy, on it!” “Soap, you’ve got hostiles consolidating in that two-story, white façade with the blue door. Your sector. Clear it.” “Aye, Cap. Movin’.”
John MacTavish moved with a fluid, practiced urgency, his boots crunching on debris. His focus was a laser dot on the described building. Ghost was somewhere to his right, a silent shadow working parallel. {{user}} had been tasked with providing overwatch from a half-collapsed building two blocks back. The plan was sound, but plans in places like this had the lifespan of a soap bubble in a sandstorm.
The crack of a high-powered rifle echoed, distinct from the chatter of AKs. A hostile sniper.
Soap’s mind processed the sound instantly, attempting to triangulate the location of the sniper East corner. Opposite Ghost. That put the sniper’s potential field of fire right across his own path of advance. He ducked into a shallow doorway, his heart hammering a steady, controlled rhythm against his ribs. He needed to move, to flush the sniper or eliminate the threat so Ghost could advance.
He caught a flicker of movement in his peripheral vision—a shift in a shadowed window on the second floor of the building he was supposed to clear. Not the sniper’s potential position, but a new, immediate threat. In the dust-hazed, murky light, the shape was indistinct, a human silhouette shouldering what looked like the long barrel of a weapon.
He had a fraction of a second. A hostile in his sector, weapon raised. Letting them get a shot off was not an option. His training, his instincts, the relentless pressure-cooker of the firefight, it all synthesized into one crystalline, irrevocable decision.
He pivoted, brought his rifle up in one smooth motion, and squeezed the trigger.
The shot was loud in the confined space of the doorway. The window glass shattered. The silhouette jerked violently and disappeared from view.
A cold, immediate satisfaction washed over him. Target neutralized. One less threat to his team. He began to move forward, already scanning for his next point of cover.
Then his brain, a half-second behind his reflexes, began connecting wires.
The building was the one he was supposed to clear, the one {{user}} might have moved up to support from, if the sniper threat had shifted.
The radio had been silent from {{user}}’s position for an alarming amount of time...
“{{user}}, report your position,” Price’s voice crackled, tense.
A silence followed that was infinitely worse than gunfire.
Soap’s blood turned to ice water in his veins. The cold satisfaction evaporated, replaced by a vacuum of pure, undiluted dread. “Naw,” he breathed, the word barely a whisper lost in the ongoing din of battle. “Naw, naw, naw.”
He abandoned all tactical caution, bursting from the doorway and sprinting across the open alley toward the white building, his boots skidding on loose stone. He hit the blown-out ground-floor entrance, weapon up, but his sweep was frantic, not professional. “{{user}}?!” he yelled, his voice cracking.
He took the crumbling stairs two at a time, his knee screaming in protest. The door to the second-floor room was splintered from his round. He kicked it open.
There, on the floor amidst the glittering broken glass and plaster dust, was {{user}}, laying on their side, curled slightly. Blood had begun to pool around them. A nasty hole through their right arm just below the shoulder was pouring at a concerningly steady rate.
But it wasn't the scorched gunshot in their arm that stopped Soap’s heart.
It was {{user}}’s face. They were conscious, eyes wide, unblinking, staring at nothing. There was no scream, no curse, no sound at all. Just a silent, absolute shock. The rifle they'd been holding lay beside them, its scope cracked from the fall. They hadn’t been aiming. They’d been moving to the window to get visual, to support.
Soap’s own rifle clattered to the floor, forgotten. He dropped to his knees, the rough stone biting through his trousers. “{{user}},” he said, his voice a hoarse, broken thing. He reached out, hands hovering, trembling.
“Oh, God,” Soap choked out, the words mangled. “{{user}}, I didnae… I didnae see ye.”
