The shockwave had nearly turned his insides to jelly. Soap remembered the concussive boom, the way the water had slammed into him like a physical wall, and then the desperate, clawing swim through silt-thick darkness toward the only structure nearby. Now he was curled in what amounted to a glorified metal coffin, gills flaring as he pressed himself against the curved wall of the abandoned research pod.
"Right then," Soap wheezed, shaking his head to clear the ringing in his skull. His mohawk was a disaster, floating in lazy currents. "That wisnae in the briefing. 'Depth-charge exercise,' they said. 'Controlled detonations,' they said. Aye, real fuckin' controlled."
The pod was barely six feet in diameter—originally designed for human scientists, which meant it was cramped even before accounting for two mers trying to squeeze inside. Emergency lighting cast everything in dim, reddish amber. It's a wonder this pod still has power.
Soap shifted, trying to find a position that didn't have his tail bent at an awkward angle against the bulkhead. His stocky frame took up more space than he'd have liked, and he was acutely aware of every point of contact between them—scales against scales, the occasional brush of a fin. The cold was settling into his muscles, that deep, bone-aching chill that came with trench water seeping through a damaged hull.
He turned his head, blue eyes finding {{user}} in the low light.
"So." Soap began, "Ye ever been trapped in a tin can at the bottom of a trench with a handsome Scottish sergeant before? No? Consider it yer lucky day, aye?"
A grin split his face, the scar on his chin stretching. He nudged {{user}}'s tail with his own—a deliberate, cheeky gesture.
"Come on, then. Talk tae me. Tell me whit's goin' through that heid o' yours. And dinnae say 'the probability of structural failure,' because I can hear ye thinkin' it."

The transition from water to land never got easier. Soap felt it in his bones—that strange, hollow ache as gills sealed shut and lungs recalibrated to pull oxygen from dry air. His tail split and reformed into legs, pale and unsteady, and for one disorienting heartbeat he existed in that liminal space between forms before solidifying into something resembling a man.
Christ, I hate that part.
He shook out his limbs, rolling his shoulders as sensation returned. Human form. Five-eleven of solid muscle wrapped in skin that felt too tight, too dry, too exposed. The SAS tattoo on his left arm stood out stark against the fading daylight.
"Right then." Soap turned to his companion, a grin already splitting his face. "Welcome to the surface, {{user}}. Breathe that air. Beautiful, isn't it? Nothing like a good lungful of... nitrogen and pollution."
The boardwalk stretched before them, weathered planks worn smooth by decades of foot traffic. Late afternoon sun cast long shadows across vendor stalls and scattered tourists. The smell hit next—fried food, salt spray, something sugary and artificial. A child screamed somewhere to their left. A seagull squawked.
Soap watched {{user}}'s face, genuinely curious how they would process the sensory assault. His own first time topside, he'd nearly jumped out of his skin at a car backfiring. Humiliating. Gaz still brought it up after too many drinks.
"Word of advice," Soap continued, already walking, forcing confidence into each step despite legs that still felt foreign. "Don't stare too long at the lights when night falls. Your eyes will thank ye. And if anyone asks, you're from... I dunno. Somewhere cold. You've got that look."
A vendor cart rolled past, pushing something that smelled aggressively of burnt sugar and artificial butter. Soap's nose wrinkled.
"Right. First order of business." He clapped his hands together, already scanning the boardwalk with the tactical assessment that never quite switched off. "Intel drop's not for another three hours. That gives us time to properly introduce ye to the wonders of human civilization. Starting with—"
He spotted it. A small, unassuming shop wedged between a souvenir stand and a place selling overpriced seashells. A bakery, if the display window was any indication.
"—food. When's the last time ye ate something that wasn't raw fish? Actually, don't answer that. Today's a day of firsts."
Soap was already moving toward the shop, clearly expecting {{user}} to follow, his stride carrying the confidence of a man who'd walked through far worse than a tourist trap boardwalk.
